Hello Ronald, do you have any dates for your William and James?? I have a few but they don't go with any "Spruell CHEEK" but he,my William, was born in VA. abt 1723,in Spottsylvania or Essex Co., VA., and then he died in Warren Co., North Carolina bet. 1797 & 1800. He married a Sarah ALSTON/BLAKE (haven't been able to straighten those names out yet), but then my family left N.C. and went to Bollinger County Missouri and also to Madison County Missouri. I know that this isn't any help to you but maybe it will open some doors for you to look in other states too.
Remember to put as much info as possible.
Good Luck in your diggin,
Genelistmom-Sandee

Could this Cheek lineage be part of the Cheek line I am looking for also? My GGrandmother is Dora Cheek...I believe that her mother died giving birth to a brother...Byron Cheek. Rumor has it she had a twin...Cora Cheek. I believe my GGM was raised possibly by an Aunt after her mother died? I think Dora's father was named Joseph Silas Cheek?

Does any of this ring a bell?

Looking for William E./William A. Cheek

Hello, I am looking for a William Eleck Cheek or a William Aleck Cheek. He was married to a Lucinda Daily and they had one son named William James Cheek. The only documentation that I can find is none. I do know through family meetings that William James/James William was his son though. It is said that William Eleck/William Aleck's father was Spruell Cheek and that he was from North Carolina or South Carolina and that William E./William A. was also born there and they later moved to Illinois where William married Lucinda. I have found where Lucinda was living in 1880 with a sister and the census shows William James as being 3 years old at the time. If any one out there can make a connecetion to William E./William A. Cheek with a father of Spruell Cheek this information would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me at Rglineman@aol.com.

Thank you,

Ronald

Hello Scott,

As researchers, we can only take these pieces of evidence at face value. Anything else is pure speculation.

I agree. George's affidavit states he was acquainted with Isaac during the Revolutionary War. He does not disclose his place of residence at the time of his enlistment.

Pension applications are usually riddled with mistakes. They contain the sixty or seventy year old recollections of a senior citizen.

Also, These documents were created with quill and ink. Extraneous ink spots are quite common.

Regards,

Terry Cheek
A possibility that occurred to me was that Isaac Way had fought in the Revolution and been wounded, and other soldiers felt that he deserved his pension, so they embellished the story to back him up and to keep the government from turning him down. Soldiers sticking up for one of their own.

There were a number of cases where Revolutionary War soldiers were turned down for their pensions by the government because they didn't have any papers or witnesses. Isaac Way's papers discharge papers were lost in a fire. So this court hearing may have been his only chance to get his pension.

Scott

P.S. As regards the apparent "Frontroyal", why is there two dots above the word? Throughout the rest of the image any dots are appropriately associated with the letter i and there is no indication of any random artifacts anywhere else in the image.

Also the fact that he states that Charlotte is in South Carolina. Possible a head injury may have made it difficult for him to remember accurately.

Curiously, George Cheek never stated that he had met Isaac Way in Front Royal, VA. Only that he was acquainted with him during the Revolutionary War. Which could have been in any of several states as they moved around quite a bit.

George Cheek never mentions anything about Frontroyal. Only Isaac Way and Ralph Weathers did.
Hello Scott,

I have attached a portion of Isaac Way's original declaration for your review. It looks like "Frontroyal" to me. Frontroyal may have been a name used only by the local inhabitants of northernmost Fauquier County, during that time. We later find the town of Front Royal, just across the Fauquire-Fredrick County line. This part of Fredrick County would later became Warren County.

Regards,

Terry Cheek

Problem with source material for some Dearborn County, Indiana Cheeks

Hi all,

Some problems with the Pension Application of Isaac Way which is sometimes used to help prove that a George Cheek, Jr. was at least in Front Royal, VA, if not born and raised there.

Copy is located here: http://www.southerncampaign.org/pen/s16568.pdf

In the application, it states, "That he (Isaac Way) enlisted in the Army of the United States in the year 1780" and "That he resided at the time of his enlistment in the town of
[illegible name of town, looks like “Frontroyal”] in the County of Fauquier and State of Virginia"

The problems with this is that, even though Front Royal was in several different counties due to changing county boundaries, it was never in the county of Fauquier. Another problem is that the town of Front Royal did not exist in 1780. It was founded in 1788, several years after the Revolutionary War ended.

So it is a bit of a problem for George Cheek, Jr. to have witnessed Isaac Way in a town that did not exist in a place where it never was.

Alternative explanations welcome.

Addendum

this link contains more information regarding Austin Cheek and his family.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wa6dsb/Mar...

including that the first name of his wife is not Demanda, but Janus (Janice) and Demanda is her middle name. This is towards the bottom of the page. Elsewhere she is referred to as Amanda and then later as Demanda.

This also mentions that Austin Cheek, his wife Amanda, and Thomas Cheek (most likely their son), selling land "...which formerly belonged to George Cheek, dec'd..." to a Mark Reid. This was in 1850. And again in 1856. And again in 1847, they sold land "...which formerly belonged to George Cheek, deceased." This would imply that that this George Cheek died in 1847 or earlier.

There is not enough known of the descendants of George Cheek of Front Royal and his wife Leanna to rule out this George Cheek being a descendant. His first son, James, may have stayed in the Front Royal area, and only two sons of his are known.

According to some, there was possible brother to George Cheek of Front Royal, named Francis Cheek and who died in Culpeper County, VA about 1824.

There was more than one Cheek family in Front Royal, VA at the same time, one the George Cheek family, and a Francis Cheek family, and I think an Elijah Cheek family. There is also recorded a Nancy Cheek (not the daughter of George Cheek as far as I can tell) and a Judith Cheek in land transactions in that area prior to 1800, although as these are women it is difficult to know if "Cheek" is their maiden name or the married name.

It is unknown if any of these families were related or not.

Also send me your email address and I will allow you to enter things into my wife's tree if you would like that. I enjoy sharing family information with relatives.
Trent,

I am not actually to the Cheeks of Tulsa/Sapulpa however, I did marry into the family. My wife is Omeka Charley, daughter of Bobbie Cheek, daughter of Joseph Wade Cheek, son of William James Cheek and Susie Fannon. I have been researching the family going on a year and am very stuck on some of the names. You mentioned that your grandmother was Ailcy, that would be the younger sister of Joseph Wade Cheek right????. You also mentioned that you had an aunt Susie, would that be your father's sister or his aunt????. My wife also has an aunt Susie that is Bobbie's sister. I do not have much information on the Cherokee blood line that you are questioning about. There are pictures of some of your ancestors on the internet that look very much Native American. Their names are Elizabeth Hobbs and her daughter Mary Ardena Rasnic. Elizabeth Hobbs mother actually was born right here in Georgia, and her mother was Ann James. The only record I have found on her is that she was born in Oglethorpe, Georgia in the mid/late 1700's and she does not have a last name associated with her. If you pull up my wife's tree Charley/Cheek, you can what I have done so far and that might help with your search. If you do run across any more information other than what I have please email me directly at Rglineman@aol.com. Also, you have another cousin that is currently working on the same people that we are. His name is Timothy Troutman. He is from Mannford, Oklahoma. He got alot of his information from my tree and has ran across a little bit more and I included it into my wife's tree. One more thing, where exactly are you from. The only other family of my wife's that I have met besides her aunts and uncle is some of Bobbie's cousins. Is your father still living, If so ask him if knows of Bobbie Jean Cheek. Her last name now is Stanly.

Thank you,

Ronald Gordy

I believe I have solved our Ritter Cheek search. I think that the below Rachel is our Ritter. Anyone got an opinion on this. Especially since we know that Jackson Cheek is the uncle to John Manson and William Henry Cheek.

1870 Shoal Creek, Fords Store, Hart County, GA Census
Enumerated July 11, 1870 by Marion Cheek
Family number 757-543
John Check 45, Male, White, works on farm, GA
Vilot (Violet in 1860 census) 51 White, keeping house, GA
Jackson Check 12, Male, White at home, GA
Rachael Check 12, Female, White at home, GA

John's listed in 1860 census as John M. D. the M stood for Manson, probably who our John Manson was named after (his grandfather) and William Henry would had been named after the Dr. William J. Henry Page (their father)

I would love to get the get the info from both of you. William Henry Cheek is my husband's Greatgrandfather. Maybe we can get this figured out.

I have medical records of William Henry Cheek. The info says that William Henry was 36 in 1913, making him born 1876-77. 1900 Census list William Henry as being born 1878. I am sure it is the same man. It also says that Ritter was 20 when he was born, and 35 when she died. Father listed is Dr Henry Page. It says that she had bastard children.

I have found on roots web a Dr. William J Henry Page living in Hart County, GA. He died 1899. I have a feeling this is the same person, but have not liked them. The info says that he never married. William Henry's medical records says that he died in a hospital in Georgia of Whiskey, etc.

The records that I have found of Preston's shows her to be born about 1860. So she would had been only 16 or 17. The medical records also says that he had a full brother, full sister and a half sister. I wonder if Ritter had possibly married Jackson Cheek.
1880 Census Henderson, Granville, NC
Jackson Cheek M 27 NC Carpenter
Rete Cheek M 25 NC Keeps house
Phil S 9 NC
Pattie S 7 NC
John S 4 NC
William S 3 NC
Robert S 1 NC

1900 Census copy does not show location, believe it is Franklin County, AL. All listed as being born in GA
Jackson Cheek 42 M 17 years
? 33 M 17 years mother of 4 (3 living)
Andy 13 M
? 10 F
? 2 F
John M. D. 18 nephew
William 21 nephew

1910 Kimbro District, Marion County, AL
Jackson D Cheek 52 M1 time, 26 years
Teri? 43 M1, 26years 3 of 4 children living
William A (Andy above) 22
Arletha C 20
Anna M 12
Mary Sanders 75 Mother-in-law

Do you think that the 1880 census could be the same William Henry and John Manson?
Peggy
I would love to have the census info that you have, to see if it is the Ritter I am looking for. According to some medical records that I have. One of the Ritter Cheek's is my husband's great-grandfather's mother. According to his medical records she was born about 1857, appears to be in GA, possibly Hart County. The medical records states that she died at 35 years old. So approximately 1892.

Re: Cheek - Powers

Hi and Welcome to the CHEEK family board..Here is some (hopefuly) helpful tips for when we post... we need to put as much information as possible in order to help you out.. such as, where was your grandmother born? do you know any dates, such as, her birth date or of the child, date married (on any of them), when your grandfather was born or died what state/s did they live in and where they were when they died?, did he ever remarry, maybe sibling/s of the child/grandparents, ect.. There are alot of very knowledgeable CHEEKS here on the board and out there across the Nation and they are very ready to help any Cousin, whether by blood or name, so any info that you can give to jogg a memory - put it down, everything/anything may help.. We recomend that living persons info should not be posted for alot of reasons, unless you have their permission, but still think about it before doing it..not everybody is into genealogy.. Also check out this CHEEK board and maybe you will find some info here that is helpfull. My CHEEKS are from Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Missouri, where they stayed, some of the other surnames connected are, UNDERWOOD m. CHEEK abt 1880, WHITENER m CHEEK abt, 1880, HAHN m. CHEEK abt. 1834, NOEL m. CHEEK abt. 1812, ALSTON/BLAKE m. CHEEK abt. 1745 <(Im confussed on these two surnames ALSTON/BLAKE),also RANDOLPH m. CHEEK abt. 1720, DYER m. CHEEK abt.1690's.. And remember dates, states and any other info will help.
Good Digg'n and looking forward to your posts,
genelistmom, Admin.
genelistmom@yahoo.com
