I have no info on the Cheeks family but I do have info on Abbie Farr who married Columbus Cheeks in 1918 in Kingston, TN. Her parents were Marion and Eliza Strickland Farr. Marion and most of the sons were miners in the area. Eliza died in 1928 but I am not sure when Marion died. Marion's parents were Jasper and Rhoda Elmore Farr.

I have been researching the Farr family for about 15 years. Hope this helps. We also have a private MyFamily website where we share info on this Farr family from NC.

Hi I'm looking for any information on Lumm and Abbie Fan Cheeks.
Lumm was born about 1894 and I have found a record saying he died in 1976, but I'm not sure of that. I thought he died earlier than that. His parents are unknown.
I'm not sure if Fan is Abbie's middle name or surname. Records say she was born about 1898 and died 1976. I can't be positive if the dates are correct or not. It said that they both were born in TN and died in Clinton, Anderson,TN.
They had 2 sons that I know of. Jack Cheeks 1919-1995 (may also be listed as Lum) and Charlie Cheeks. I don't have any other info on Charlie, but Jack married Geneva June Davidson.
If anyone can help me, please let me know.
Thanks

I

Re: African American Cheeks

I have been doing research on my Holt line for many years and have come across an interesting bit of information that I was hoping one of the Cheeks family researchers might help me.
My 2nd great-grandfather Thomas S. Holt was a cotton farmer that migrated from south Alabama to East Texas (Smith County) on or around 1855. He took about 25 slaves with him on his journey. They settled in Jamestown, Smith Co., TX where he and his wife Charilty Robbins Slaughter died in 1864 & 1865 respectfully. They had twelve children one of which was my great-granduncle James D. Holt. James D. Holt was living with his parents in 1860, but then appeared in the 1870 Caddo Parish, LA census as a single head of household with black Holt family headed by a Susan Holt of Alabama two houses down from James. Then I noticed in the 1880 Caddo Parish, LA census James appeared with Susan in the same household and all the children were listed as mulatto. This verified my suspicion that they were indeed a biracial couple that probably was married or a couple before they moved to Louisiana and my bet is before 1860. The reason I believe this is that their daughter Cora appears in the 1860 Smith Co., TX slave schedule as a 1 year old female and Susan as a 20 year old female (no names appear). Cora is listed in the 1870 Caddo Parish, LA census of that age.
I found on the death certificates of some of their children that their father was James D. Holt and mother was Susan Cheeks both born in Alabama.
I have contacted some of their descendents already and have verified that they had heard that one of their ancestors was white but had no idea who it may have been.
I would love to talk to anyone that might have a connection to this Susan Cheeks and hopefully learn more about this Cheeks family for those cousins that I have contacted.
Craig Kisabeth

cheeks family

The cheeks family that I am looking for were listed in Census records as being "Mulatto". I found them in the 1880 census in Speedwel-Wythe-Va. Then in the 1900 census in Abingdon-Washington-va. The parents were James Cheeks married to Laura Minor. children that they had were Clarence E. cheeks, elmer, eugene Francis, Ewell marion, Robert Ray, and Walter Fowler. A few of them later were found in Cleveland OH, and later on clarence moved to Erie Pa and married there. He married Juanita thompson. It is the Thompson line that I am actually researching but since I have found one distant cousin for my friend who's line this belongs to, I thought that if I could learn more about the cheeks family I could sent this info out to him. So if anyone has any connections with this particular group and could send it to me it would be greatly appreciated!

I am a descendant of an African-American Cheeks. My grandfather was named Henderson Cheeks. Henderson lived in Pine Bluff, Arkansas his adult life. His father was Douglas Cheek. Douglas is from Pastoria, Arkansas. It has been said that Douglas' father was a red-headed Irishman and Douglas' mother was a Cherokee Indian. It also has been said that our set of Cheeks has ties in Kentucky. Douglas fathered two families of Cheeks and Henderson also fathered two families of Cheeks. If anyone knows anything about Douglas or Henderson, please e-mail me at ocolyn@juno.com

My paternal grandfather was John Cheeks who is believed to have been born in Alabama in the 1800's. He had a sister named Lucy who lived in the Birmingham area. He married a Gracie Lunn in the Birmingham area, and served in the U.S. Army. He died in Tuskegee Alabama in approximately 1935-37. He and Gracie had a daughter (my mother), Lillie Mae Harris, born in 1925.

Does any of this sound "related" to your search?

I had an opportunity to show your positng aroung at the Cheeks Family reunion this weekend. Many of the elders seem to think that your family may be the missing link. Many stated that there was birth certificate that indicated that William Randall Cheeks was from North Carolina. We are all very interested in learning anything at all about the North Carolina "African American Cheeks." I have been given some more family tree info. Maybe if we continue to communicate we can find our missing links.

Hope to hear from you soon.
