Re: John Cheeseman, wife's name was Miller

Wow, finally, someone in the same boat.

Here's what I have: Apparently John Cheeseman had a sister, or cousin, named Sally. Anyway on 23 August 1837 John Cheeseman married Sally Miller in Gallia Co, Ohio.

But on the very next day, August 24 and it's the very next entry in the marriage record book, Phelty J. Miller married Sally Cheeseman.

Since the entries in the book are one after the other, I was wondering if perhaps the acting justice of the peace on the first day entered the names incorrectly, i.e. John Cheeseman and Sally Miller and then next day corrected them to John Miller and Sally Cheeseman? Or was it a brother/sister pair who married a brother/sister pair and there really were 2 marriages?.

Many people reference this Phelty J. Miller as Phelty John Miller, however my research shows he 4 times purchased federal land and therein he is shown as Phelty Jacob Miller.

Phelty J. Miller and Sally Cheeseman were my great great grandparents and I've been trying to clear this up for years. I have copies of the referenced marriages which are no more than hand written entries in a registry book and also the federal land purchases.

The children of Phelty J. Miller and Sally Cheeseman were
Emily b. 1838, Wilson b. 1839, Charles b. 1841, Martha b. 1843, Amazone b. 1844, Elizabeth b. 1846 and William b. 1850. William was my great grandfather.

There were more Miller/Cheeseman marriages as supposedly the parents of Sally Cheeseman were Joseph Cheeseman and Nancy Miller.

This couple's son Daniel Hunt, b. 1839 in Bapchild, would emigrate to the Pennsylvania coal fields in 1890. He would have been Daniel Cheeseman's grandson.

It was spelt Chiesman and not Cheeseman, and was located on the corner of High Street and Pudding Lane. There was one main store on the corner and then another next door which sold mens wear. Around 1968 I'm sure there was an in store Dixons electrical shop - I still have the old cine 8 camera I purchased. I also remember them selling model railways around that time. I applied to them for a summer sales job but they would only offer me a full time job which i had to turn down.
We lived a few miles away and occasionally received wrongly directed phone calls - people were reluctant to accept that they had phoned a private house.
Chiesman's had branches in some other towns. The building has just been converted into flats.

Hi, Terry,

Thanks for the message. In fact, I've traced my Cheeseman line (after many false starts), back to the early 1700's via Canterbury, Petham, Waltham and Stelling Minnis (one Jacob Cheeseman, died 1722.Don't think I can get back any further in that direct line,

Regards,

MICK

Hi Lisa,
The family tree I located showed John Cheeseman married Ann Gaulton, had 10 children, one of which was Charles Cheeseman my gggrandfather. Charles had children from two marriages. My ggrandfather, Philip Cheeseman came from the first marriage of Charles Cheeseman and Rosanna Walsh. Philip Cheeseman and Elizabeth White had 8 children, one of which was my grandpa, Joseph Cheeseman. Joseph had my father Vincent Cheeseman, who had five children. I guess all the Cheesemans had big families.
I wonder if we are related in any way, I couldnt find a Michael in the family tree, but maybe he went by his middle name like my grandpa did?
-Jen Cheeseman

Lynae,
Ive been looking for relatives on Charles Cheeseman's line, who married a Rosanna Walsh. They had a son Philip Joseph who is my great grandfather. Philip and Eliza White had 8 children, one of which was my grandfather Samuel Joseph Cheeseman (who went by Joseph). So Charles Cheeseman is my great great grandfather and his brother, Joseph would be my great great uncle I guess.
I would like to visit where my grandpa grew up. I live in Bronxville NY USA, but not sure my relatives there would be that enthusiastic about it. -Jen Cheeseman

Robert,

I am a great, great grand daughter of John Cheeseman.

These two brothers settled in the Burin peninsula of Newfoundland. John had many children, including my great grand father, Micheal Cheeseman. My grandfather, Alphonsus Cheeseman is Michael Cheeseman's son.

Michael Cheeseman fathered about 14 children from two wives. My grand father was the seventh son born into his family and his mother died in child birth giving birth to him. Her name was Johanna Hann from Petite Forte, a beautiful picturesque community in Nl. She is buried there.

His father Michael, was John's seventh son. This is supposed to mean in our folklore that these sons had special abilities and my grandfather for example was sought after from all over the surrounding communities as he could stop blood loss. My grandfather married Christina Whiffen and they had 15 chidlren and 12 survived childhood.

My father is Alphonsus Cheeseman's namesake. My father Phonse was born in 1947 and he and my mother had 6 children.

I am Phonse's daughter, Lisa the 2nd eldest of his 6 children.
I have one daughter,Jessica.

The Cheesemans have been known for their musical talents and their ability to make up stories that entertained many family members before there was TV.
The children are all very smart and like their parties. We are a large , loving family whom I like to think have a good name and a good work ethic...

I hope that gives you some info on the Cheeseman family.

I think he had 5 or 6 kids with Marge and after getting out of the service moved to NJ.Only saw him once after at my Dad's funeral service in 1968.My brother and I were shocked as he walked into our livingroom, He looked exactly like our Dad,which would be your Grandfather!
Hope this helps, you can reach me at Kcheese165@aol.com

Hi Laura,

Thank you for getting back to me, this definitely fills in a number of blanks. What I need to find next is source citations and to find these sources so I can add the information to my family tree database. I'd also like to see what I can find on John MacPherson to see if I can find his ancestry.

What I know, beginning with Miriam MacPherson, is that she married Rev. Lewis Cheeseman and they had five children. The following is a register report with sources:

(1) Rev. Lewis Cheeseman[1],[2],[3]
& Miriam McPherson[4],[5]
(2) Dr. Andrew Cheesman[4] (ca1826 - )
bd. ca 1826[6]
(2) Jane Helen Cheeseman[7],[8],[9] ( - 1865)
dd. 27 Jun 1865[8],[10]
& Dr. James Roseburgh Leaming[11],[12],[13],[8],[9] (1820 - 1892)
bd. 25 Feb 1820, Groveland, Livingston county, NY[11],[8]
dd. 5 Dec 1892, New York, NY
(3) Dr. Edward Leaming , M.D.[11],[14],[15],[9] (1861 - 1916)
bd. 1 Sep 1861, New York, NY[16],[17]
dd. 11 May 1916, New York, NY[16],[17]
& Lula Smith[11],[17] (1872 - 1926)
bd. 1872, (Lowell, MA)[17]
dd. 1926[17]
(2) Sarah P. Not shown – title reveals information on living individuals.

Notice that “Neddie,” only child of Jane Helen Cheeseman and Dr. James Rosebrugh Leaming is apparently a nickname for Dr. Edward Leaming (my great-grandfather). In turn, one of my sources showed “Kate,” younger daughter of Lewis and Miriam to be a nickname for the Catherine you have. Also, you see from the above report Jane Helen had, in addition to her brother Andrew, three sisters—Sarah, Kate (Catherine), and Miriam. I don’t have much more than their names, but it may be enough to research them further. I have additional biographical information on Rev. Lewis Cheeseman (a Presbyterian minister in Philadelphia), his son-in-law Dr. James Rosebrugh Leaming (a surgeon in NYC) and grandson Dr. Edward Leaming (a physician in NYC), if it interests you. All are in my own direct line. Again, anything you can provide as to source citations would be extremely helpful. Thank you.

Jay
Hi Jay,
Here's what I have, hope it helps! I'd love to know what you can add to it.

My GGGGrandmother was Ann Macpherson, born In Alvie Parish, Inverness-shire, Scotland, in 1784 or 86, and emigrated to New York State aboard the brig Brandy Wine Miller which departed Glasgow for New York on Aug 9, 1803. On board were a number of other Scots, including Duncan Grant who became her husband Sept 9, 1809 (they soon moved to Livingston County). Ann was joining her father John in Albany. Since we have a couple of family letters from Scotland that refer to brothers, my best guess is that Ann was an illegitimate child, born to parents John Macpherson and Mary Macpherson, who later married other people and had families. Mary stayed in Alvie, Scotland.

In Ann's father's case, I believe he married Catherine (last name unknown), and had a son Andrew (b. 1805), and daughters Miriam, Catherine, Jane Ann, and Grace (b. 1808). They started out in Albany but by the 1840 census had moved to Schenectady. It seems John died before 1840. Catherine's will was probated 12 Jan 1850, and she left house & money to her sister Jane Shankland (1782 - 1867). There is also mention of an Aunt Nancy--no idea if this was a sister to Catherine or John.

No information on Andrew except that he's listed as residing at 130 Union St, Schenectady in 1841 and Galway, Saratoga NY in 1850.

Miriam married Lewis Cheeseman and moved to Philadelphia.
Children, as of Dec. 1867
a. Dau Catharine E. Cheeseman known as Kate; Living with Andrew in NJ
b. Dau Jane Helen, died 1865
Jane Helen you know perhaps is dead--she died two years last June, of Bright’s disease of the kidneys--leaving one son Neddie now in his sixth year a bright boy--
c. Son Andrew. Andrew has given up the MD & gone into the Pottery business--making this white stone ware we use on tables at Trenton, NJ, a wealthy partner with him.
d. Sallie P., mar. Augustine Fish (d. betw 1870 and July 1873)
married wealthy & has a beautiful home, her husband (Dr. Fish) is a lovely man. She has no children. He died, she moved to CA.

Jane Ann, will probated Apr 1874, never married.
Nursed Mother, nursed Aunt Jane until her death, nursed Grace until her death, stayed in Schenectady (but was evicted from the house by her sister after Aunt Jane’s death?). Her letters supply all these details.

Grace (b. 1808). Grace was buried on Christmas day 1862, d. of breast cancer

Catherine, (d bef 1874), married Samuel Taggart Wells, Princeton graduate who went to Iowa and in 1860 to Ventura County, Ca. He remarried after Catherine's death.
Children, as of Dec. 1867
a. Rosanna Wells (known as Rosa), married to Dr. James Graham Cooper & has a boy most a year old = born early 1867
b. Lizzie Wells Farish, Lizzie is teaching
c. Moses is a young man--gets in the express business at $100 per month,
d. Samuel (known as Jamie?) Wells did not like California, so came on to be educated here--4 years ago he entered Princeton College

Dr. James Graham Cooper was one of the country's first naturalists; he later became first president of the California Academy of Sciences, still a big deal in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The Cooper hawk is named after him.
Their son Samuel Calvin Wells, born in Pittsburg, Pa. graduated Princeton in 1873; was Editor of the Philadelphia Press.

Laura
You mentioned “Miriam (Mary) McPherson of Schenectady, NY, my grandmother's half-sister.” I’d be very interested to know more of her family connections. Miriam MacPherson and Rev. Lewis Cheesman are my 3rd great-grandparents. I have his ancestry back to George Chesman but not her’s. Anything you can tell me would be a great help.
Hi, I know it's been a while since your last posting, but I just came across it.Been doing a little poking around about Lewis Cheeseman, you may allready know this stuff but I'll put it here anyway. He was a bit of a writer, publishing several books on the state of religion, a google search on his name will give you the names of these books and even where to purchase them if you're inclined. He was one of 10 children, parents were Calvin Cheeseman and Amy Day.There were several doctors in the family, including Amy's father and Lewis's younger brother John. He served as the minister at the forth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia at no.4 Union Place between 1848 and 1860 when his health started to decline. I'll try and find out something else for you when I can.
Hope this helps.
Tom

Thanks Valerie,
The Skinner connection into the Cheesemans is that George Cheeseman (b c1840) marr Sarah Ann Ditch (b 1852) on 19/1/1874.
They had a dau Maud (b1880) who marr Charles David Skinner (b 1882)They migrated to Australia in 1911 along with 3 children.
If you can make any connection - that would be fantastic - it sounds promising.
If there is, I can fill you in about the Aussies here.
Please keep in contact.
Private email may be a more efficient way to communicate.
The Cheeseman line has been dormant for me for many years - I hope we can shed some light onto it!
Thanks
Trevor
(Melbourne)

Hi, Trevor,

No connections anywhere, I'm afraid, but of course the Kent Cheesemans were prolific in their endeavours to help populate the planet! Good luck with your research,

Regards,

Mick

Hi Valerie,
This sounds promising to me.
My George was marr twice. Secondly to Sarah Ann Harriet Ditch (1874) But I don't know who his first wife was. On his second marr cert he is listed as widowed.
Could your Albert George be the child of 'my' George and his first wife??
Who was 'your' Albert George's mother & father?
My George has been a brick wall for me for years!
Hear from you soon.
Thanks for your quick response.
Trevor
(Melbourne, Aust)

Hi Trevor,

My 'George' was in fact ALBERT GEORGE born in Kent UK in 1873. He married Eliza and the whole family congregated around Eccles, Burham & Maidstone in Kent UK. There were several cousins (I think children of George Cheeseman, son of Albert George) who emigrated to various colonies and the name Skinner is familiar to me.

Hi, I don't think they do but I am still very much in the research stage of this family. Most of the Cheesemans congregated in Kent UK. I do know the immediate family and my grandparents (George & Eliza b 1873)but have not got further than that at this time.

As said previously, I do know that my father had cousins who emigrated to the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand and I think some of them had the name of Skinner.

It is entirely possible that there is a family connection, I do remember a great-aunt Sarah so I will keep you posted.

Hi Mick,
Thanks for your quick reply.
My George Cheeseman is a brick wall at the moment.

I have him listed in the 1851 census as living with Auntie Mary Cheeseman b c1773 Kent, her dau Harriet b c 1813 Linton Kent, son Robert b c 1824 Attington Kent. My George is listed as 'cousin' b c 1841 Maidstone Kent.

My George's was widowed when he marr my Sarah Ann Harriet Ditch. On his wedding certificate, his father is not named.
As he was living with his auntie when he was 10, I presume his father died when he was very young and possibly did not know (?)

Does the family I mentioned above fit anywhere with you?

If you have any info regarding these Cheesemans, please let me know, as George is a 'brick wall' and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please keep me posted.
Thanks

Trevor
Hi, Trevor,

Unfortunately, 'your' George Cheeseman is not 'my' George Cheeseman, although no doubt they were related somewhere along the line. All my 'Cheesemans' stayed in Kent, in the direct line at least,

Regards,

Mick Mirams

I also have Cheesemans from Kent who emigrated to the U.S. in 1852. Mine go back to Samuel Cheeseman who married Lucy Harris. They had the following children: Mary, Elizabeth, Lucy, Charlotte, Sarah, Anne, John, and Amos. All were born in Stalisfield, Kent. Samuel and family moved to Leysdown, Sheppey, Kent.

Do any of these fit in with your?

Hi, Valerie,

Many thanks for your message, much appreciated.

Unfortunately, it's the wrong GEORGE CHEESEMAN. My 'George', who was my great-great grandfather, came from the Canterbury area of Kent, as did his immediate ancestors. Since posting my original message, I have tied up quite a few loose ends, but none involving Eccles or Down Under. But thank you again for your consideration,

Mick Mirams

Hi, I have just found your message. My research to date does not go back as far as yours but I am a Cheeseman from Kent.My research has shown this name coming up in Kent but very few other counties in Kent UK.

My grandfather was George Cheeseman, married to Eliza Prentice and they raised (6) children in Eccles Kent. I know there were cousins who emigrated to the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
If you think this may be what you are looking for please contact me and good luck in your search....
