Mary Ann Jones:

The new Chenault Family Red Book shows that Mary Chenault born about 1871 married on 19 !pr 1889 to Louis H. Wyland who was born around 1865 in PA. The father of Mary is shown to be Mordecai Chenault born about 1839 who married Bettie M._______ born about 1848.

It should be noted that the Red Book carries this Chenault Family back another 6 generations to Estienne Chenau, the French Imigrant.

Hope this is of some help.

Bernie in Virginia
Husband of a Chenault Descendant

Hi Susan Eastman:

For your information there is a new Chenault Family Red Book which has just been published by the Chenault Family National Association. In this book there is information on a Beverly Randolph Chenault born 1814 who married Parmelia Earnes about 1840 in Appamattox Co., VA. Is this the one for whom you are searching? This line has been traced all the way back to Estienne Chenau the French immigrant.

Bernie in Virginia

acnbuckeye:

You did not give the names of your Chenault ancestor so it is difficult to answer your question. Many of the Chenaults lived in Caroline Co., VA as well as other areas of Virginia.

This I can tell you Estienne Chenau shows up for the first time as Stephen Chenault in Essex County Virginia around 1714. He was a Huguenot who came from the area of Normandy in France thru England to America. Many researchers believe that Stephen Chenault (Estienne Chenau) did not go to Manakin Village in Virginia with the majority of the Huguenot imigrants. Researchers however, now agree that Estienne did go to Manakin Village and live there for about 7 years and that he married twice. Also it now believed that with his two wives he had three children.

Bernie in Virginia

Peters on 9 Nov 1834 in Kentucky I suggest that you check out the new Chenault Family Red Book because they are shown on page 743. This book carries the ancestry back another 5 generations to an Estienne Chenau.

Bernie in Virginia
Husband of a Chenault descendant

Some from the census and some from death certificates. John L. Peters death cert 11 Jun 1854, parents Thomas and Elizabeth. Martin Peters death cert also states parents Thomas and Elizabeth. At the Breck Co court house there is a cemetery record that has Martin buried at the Peters Cemetery in Breck Co.I may not have all the children, as I had a hard time finding much on the Peters.

Re: Chenault in Recollections of Virginia Norton Seal (VA)

Virginia's notes say Turner Chenault married Hannah Southworth. This is an error. According to VA State Library acc #24447, pg 170 a marriage Bond was to James Chenault and Hannah Southworth 8 April 1816 in Caroline CO.,VA. But if you look at Virginia's notes you will notice she has John Mann Seal married to a Frances Chenault. I didn't find this marriage anywhere. But maybe Frances Chenault was a daughter of James and Hannah and that is how the mixup occured. William Pruitt's wife was Mary Chenault. I don't have proof but with both sides of the family connected to Chenault it is easy to see a mistake happening. Virginia was born in 1879. Hannah was possibly dead by that date. The 1850 Caroline census shows Turner with his wife Betsy and daugher Amanda. Also Hannah is living with William Chenault and wife Sarah on same census. James owned land that was sold in 1832 to Ismael Massey. It was next to Bennet Seal's land. James died about this time as he goes off the tax rolls then. Hope this helps.

Linda,

Here's something on the Wests:

Alexander1 West was born 1776 in Virginia, and died April 12, 1852 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He married Mary Burton November 24, 1795.

Children of Alexander West and Mary Burton are:
2. i. BRYANT2 WEST, d. Bef. 1852, Kentucky.
3. ii. ELIZABETH M. WEST, b. Abt. 1795; d. August 17, 1852, Frymire, Breckinridge County, Kentucky.
4. iii. WILLIAM JAMES WEST, b. April 01, 1801, Wayne County, Kentucky; d. April 06, 1852, Breckinridge County, Kentucky.
5. iv. BRONSON MONROE WEST, b. February 18, 1803, Kentucky; d. December 17, 1874, Stephensport, Breckinridge County, Kentucky.
6. v. MARY ANN WEST, b. 1810.
7. vi. NANCY WEST, b. 1811; d. September 14, 1838, Breckinridge County, Kentucky.
8. vii. EMILY WEST, b. December 18, 1814; d. August 14, 1874.
9. viii. PHERREBY WEST, b. 1817.

8. Emily2 West (Alexander1) was born December 18, 1814, and died August 14, 1874. She married James B. Bennett.

The best way to read this is by going to the Hall-Coker Family Web site. I haven't found anything to dispute in the work there.

I'll see if I can get more information. I'm a little unorganized right now, but I know I have a list of the family who died at the same time Alexander did.

Question: Where did you find the names for Thomas and Elizabeth Peters' children? I have conflicting information and am curious. The death list shows Martin Peters' parents as Thomas and Elizabeth, as you no. I have information from a researcher I hiredy years ago that shows (when Martin and Emily applied to be married) that he listed his father as William and her father as John.

I know a lot of time the death certificate/lists do have errors as they're only as good as the person's knowledge who fills them out, so I've been leaning toward William - after all Martin himself gave that information.

Just wondering how you got the children's names as that could solve my mystery.

Thanks.

Andrea

I know they're James Bennett and Emily West. The Bennetts are a complete mystery to me. I haven't found anything on James. I believe he was born in Kentucky.

Emily West is the daughter of Alexander West (he was born in Virginia) and Mary "Polly" Burton. I know Alexander and several other members of his family died of small pox. He was living with a son in Kentucky at the time. I'll gather my information for you. Mary Burton - no idea on her yet.

I know Martin Peters' father is William Peters and he was born in Virginia. Nothing has come up on William for me yet. He's been hiding from me for a long time.

Also, Emily Chenault's father is named John. Another mystery.

I'll be in touch in a day or two with what I have about the Wests.

My mother was born to James Hugh Chennault, 28 Dec 1903.Her father's name was found with about 5 different spellings on records and legal docoments. His father,William Chennault born 1816 had about the same different spellings. His father, John Chennault had the same problem. Back in those early times they might have 3 different spellings on the same page of a legal document. They could care less how the spelling was, some times it started with Shanalt. As I kept digging deeper and found that they could care less how things were spelled as long as heir point was made and you got the gist of it. Census taker's are something else. It goes by sound because there was so many names that looked like alphabet soup.People weren't home so he got what information he could from the next neighbor. He couldn't speak english. You must be flexible in genealogy and read between the lines.
Joe Dial

E T Chenault, Clay Co, TX

I am trying to figure out who E T Chenault (a lady) is. She is buried in a plot in Hopewell Cem. in Henrietta, Clay Co, TX. She was born 28 Aug 1724 and died 13 Apr 1896. on stone it says "Ne Frost" and at bottom "Mother Darling"

the only other stone in the large lot is that of Rachel Emily Gillespie born 23 Jan 1825 and died 11 Dec 1887. Rachel is the widow of George Washington Gillespie and mother of Silas Benton Gillespie who married Nancy Soloman in 1891. Rachel and E T Chenaultl's stones match.

Any help on this family will be appreciated.

Betty

I know that your message is more than 7 years old, but I have a William Chenault that is in my tree due to his son's marriage into my family. What caught my attention is the mention of the dairy farm. My William W. Chenault (b abt 1865 TX/MS-I have found two different sources of states) had several children with a Bettie M. His son, James S. Chenault married my grandpa's sister, Goldie McCay. I was trying to find living relatives in MS that my have family pictures to share. Coincidently, Goldie and James had a dairy farm in MS that their two sons, Ralph and Stanford help run. Any confirmation would be appreciated. I do have this line forward.

Shelia Cain Vidrine
sdcv@connect2family.org

You mention Etienne Chenault. I am familiar with the website and wondered if all Chenault's are decendants of him? I am not sure where my family came from except for VA and OH. I have never been able to get in touch with anyone from the Chenault website to learn more. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. I'm aware that the Chenaults have many different spellings. I'm just looking for anyone who may recognize these names, spelled this way or any other way.
