Robin,
Yes, George Kruck Cherrie and Stella Bruere were my great-great-grandparents. My great-grandfather was his son Hubert Cherrie and I had the honor of knowing him for many years when I was younger. I grew up hearing stories about George. I just went to Venezuela for holiday, but did not make it to Angel Falls (George had a donkey named Angel Falls)

I guess this makes us family of some sort.

Where are you located?

Lex, was your great-great-grandfather George K. Cherrie born in Marion Co., Iowa? Married Stella Bruere? Was he a naturalist & curator? My husband's great-grandfather was this George Kruck Cherrie. Maybe you are cousins!

Robin Bills
precambrian51@yahoo.com

My brother and great grandfather are George Cherrie. My great grandfather was a world famous explorer, ornithologist, and author from Scottish parentage. Our family is a sept of the Clan Boyd from Kilmarnock and wears the Paisley District tartan. I also have a book listing the approximately 600 Cherrie households around the globe, the majority of which are still in Scotland, primarily in Midlothian. I've enjoyed visiting Scotland, Ireland, and England while doing occasional light genealogical research and intend to do a lot more in the future. Our particular branch of the family has been here in America since the 1830's. Feel free to contact me if this has been of any help and you'd like to know more.

There is an excellent genealogy service in Park Circus in Glasgow. If possible it would be best if you could visit personally. You have to book in advance (cost £13.00 sterling)
You should first access your father's death certificate which will give you details of where he died, his usual residence at time of death, his age at death and the name of the person who registered his death. You can then calculate which year he was born and trace his birth certificate. This will give you his place of birth, his parents names date and place of marriage. Then go through about 20 years from their date of marriage accessing all birth certificates with the same surname, cross reference them to parents names and you will find any siblings. Once you have found a district common to your family try looking up voter's rolls (Mitchell Library in Glasgow) for current possible addresses.
If you think that your father was born in Scotland but outside of Strathclyde you would be best to access this service in Edinburgh.
Staff at the genealogy centre are very helpful.
Telephone No. is 0141 287 7577
Good Luck
Margaret

Cherries in Glasgow

I don't know if this will be much help. There was a Cherrie family lived near us in Croftfoot, Glasgow. I think it was Croftend Avenue which was near the station. I know they were there in the 1940s and '50s but not much else about them.

I am trying to find out some methods of tracing the family of my father. My father was George Cherrie, he died in 1967 in Glasgow Scotland. I only know so very little about his family, that they seemed to emigrate to the USA around the 1930's and had previously lived in LANARKSHIRE, Scotland and that it was a very large family. I have never had any contact whatsoever with any member of his family, and would very much like some leads or help.
My e-mail address is ; golden.rainbow@quicknet.nl
My Thanks.
