Dear Paul;
You must be my cousin/ as George Greenberry Cherryhomes was my 5th Great Granddaddy. I am a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and have done extensive research on our family lineage. You mentioned about Uncle Henry raising his nephew. The young man died early from Typhoid. I have tracked all of the family graves in both Midland Cemetery and Pioneer Cemetery in Young county and Jack county, but cannot find my Great Great Granddaddy George William Cherryhomes grave. I found my Grandma, but cannot locate him. His death record states he died in Fort Worth Tx, but I was unable to locate his grave anywhere in Fort Worth. Is he buried in the cemetery you mention on the Cherryhomes ranch?? I was not aware of this cemetery. Can you tell me how to get there? Is it in Grahm Tx? Please help if you can. I have all the family records and the Confederate Military service records of his and Uncle Henry , Uncle Franklin and Uncle Abraham, but cannot find my Granddaddy's grave. Can you help me? My Mamma was Bettie Cherryhomes Widener, daughter of Geoffry & Ruth Cherryhomes.
Thank you,
Bettie Marlene Russo ( Cherryhomes line)

Abraham Cherryholmes

My husband and I started a cemetery restoration project June 2005 in Gnadenhutten, Ohio. We have collected burial info from every imaginable source as well as uncovering 100 plus covered grave markers. To make a very long story short, we found Abraham's original marker-carved riverbed rock-only initials ACH and date 1814-additional research lead me to believe that one of the two Unknown Soldier War of 1812 markers there was for him. I filed with the National Archives and recieved his military records-served in Capt George Richardson Co, misspelled in muster roll as Cherryhohney- on March 30th the cemetery association faxed Veterans Administation the necessary paperwork to recieve his government veterans headstone. Should arrive in 60 days from date filed. Happy Memorial Day!

I have a good deal of information on the descendents of Elizabeth Cherryholmes and Emanuel Roadcap. They had ten children. I am descended from both their daughter Hannah Roadcap who married Abraham Hoover, and their son Isaac Roadcap, who married Margaret Van Pelt. Hannah and Abraham's son, John Calvin Hoover, married Isaac and Margaret's daughter, Margaret Delilah Roadcap. They were my great-grandparents. Contact me for more information on these families.

Another Paul Cherryhomes, this time from Minneapolis, MN.

So far as I can tell, William of Rockingham was not the first Cherryholmes in North America. There was a Mary Cherryhomes that married a Jacob Stephens (probably around 1680 going by his birthdate). There was a Marmaduke that is mentioned in a Wakefield will who may or may not have returned to England to claim an annuity. And there was the John Cherryholme of Bertie County, NC, one-time witness to a power of attorney transfer (1718) and first juror named in a road petition hearing (1724).

Were there others?

PDC

Marriage date

Dear Paul, a transcript from the Dewitt Whiting and Sarah E. Cherryholmes Family Bible indicate a marriag date of March 11, 1849. However, couthouse records indicate a marriage date of November 11, 1847 which is a few months after Dewitt returnd from the Mexican American War and had received his land bounty. I agree the records look like it could be 1849, but comparisons to other dates on the microfilms indicate 1847. This is supported by Nancy Scharr local Tuscarawas County Genealogist. My grand father William Martin Whiting Senior was born December 26, 1849 in Port Washington, Ohio, given the up rightness of the two families the 1847 date is more likely. I assume I'm corresponding with a cousin and that is very nice. My branch of the Whiting Family were from Lincolnshire County and came to the Boston, Mass. area in 1636. My information on Sarah is very limited, but I will be glad to share it.--Regards Bill Whiting

In June of this year 2002, I visitd the Beersheba Cemetery, or at least it is the Cemetery on Beersheba Road. I find there are still headstones for the Waltons and Simmers, but I find no markers for Cherryholmes, I know my great grandmothers mother Rebecca is buried there. What of Abraham, his mother and wife?. A few headstones date back to 1812 and are still readable.

Thanks, Bill

In mid August I visited the old cemetery in Port Washington, Ohio where my great grandmother Sarah Elisabeth Cherryholmes Whiting is buried with sons James Ace, and Lorenzo( named after a brother), and a still born female. Her parents were John and Rebecca Simmers Cherryholmes. In the 1850 Port Washington census a Melinda Cherryholmes is also listed as dwelling with Sarah and Dewitt Clinton Whiting, and with son William. A local genealogist Nancy Scharr is an expert on the Moravian community and very reasonable. If wanted I will get you her address. Sincerely Bill Whiting
