Looking for info on William Chesley, born abt 1836 New Hampshire, died 1895 in Jersey. Lived in Boston from the 1860's to the 1880's. He was a builder and had a firm called Morton & Chesley. He was married to Ruth Jones. Thanks for any info!

Hello, I'm still looking for information on my great grandfather, John A Chesley b. 11-12-1890 in Coles County, Illinois. He married around 1910 and had a son Everett with his first wife, before marrying my great grandmother. I am stuck with no information on John's background. He moved around frequently--was known to be in Illinois, Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania.

GEORGE W. CHESLEY.--In the chronicle of events attending the growth of Sacramento, from an outpost of civilization to her present proud position, the gentleman whose name heads this sketch must always remain a central figure. As an old-time merchant, yet in the front rank of commercial circles, as well as a citizen who has always taken a pride in the advancement of the city of his adoption. Mr. Chesley commands the respect, esteem and confidence of his fellow-citizens, in a degree, and to an extent, seldom observed. He is a native of Dover, New Hampshire, born February 3, 1822, his parents being Richard and Mary (Twombley) Chesley, both of whom came of old New England families. His father, who was a contractor, died when the subject of this sketch was a mere boy in years, and he, after going to school at Lynn something over a year, went to Boston to live with a sister who had married and located in that city. There he commenced his first occupation in life, —that of clerking in a dry-goods store. At the age of seventeen years he went to Providence, Rhode Island, and resided there until the 2d of February, 1849, when he went to New York, having determined to try his fortunes on the golden shores of California. On the 5th of February the “Crescent City” steamed out of New York harbor with Mr. Chesley as a passenger, and she was the second steamer to make the trip to Chagres, the “Falcon” being the first. On the 25th of May following, after having been engaged on the Isthmus in the auction and ticket brokerage business, Mr. Chesley resumed his journey to San Francisco on the steamer “Oregon”, Captain Pierson. On the 13th of June, 1849, the “Oregon,” steamed through the Golden Gate, and Mr. Chesley landed on California soil. He at once embarked in the auction and Commission business in connection with John A. Clark, son of ex-Mayor Aaron Clark, of New York, and John Johnson, under the firm name of Johnson, Chesley & Clark. That firm continued until March, 1850, when it was dissolved, and Mr. Chesley came to Sacramento and engaged in the auction business, on the corner of Sixth and K streets, which was the center of the cattle and horse market, great droves of these animals being almost constantly about. He was burned out here in the great fire of 1852, and this decided him to return to San Francisco. There he was interested in real estate, having purchased some fifty and 100 vara lots, and subdivided them. These yielded him, $3,100. Chesley street was laid out, and took its name in his honor. In 1854 Mr. Chesley came back to Sacramento, and in the following year, forming a partnership with Mr. Bradley (now a retired capitalist of San Francisco), and ex-Mayor Bryant, started the wholesale house of Chesley & Bryant, in the block below the present store on Front street. In 1860, Mr. Bradley, who had previously sold out came back into the firm, which then became Chesley & Bradley. In 1863 the latter’s interest was purchased by Mr. Chesley, and the firm became G. W. Chesley & Co., which is the present style. In 1862 the business was removed to the present location (twenty-eight years ago), and now the house is well known and does an extensive business throughout California and adjoining States and Territories. No house on the Pacific Coast enjoys a better reputation among its patrons than that of G. W. Chesley & Co. Mr. Chesley was married at Providence, Rhode Island, in 1844, to Miss Alice Marie Whipple, a descendant of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Mrs. Chesley is a lady of rare gifts and accomplishments, and her letters, written from Paris during the Franco-Prussian war, afforded material of almost dramatic interest to her friends in California. She was in the French capital when it was besieged by the German hosts, and endured with great fortitude all the horrors of the dark days of the celebrated siege. Mr. Chesley is a member of the San Francisco and Sacramento Societies of California Pioneers, and has been for three years president of the latter body, despite the unwritten law which confines any member to but a single term in the executive office. He is a member of the Improvement Association, and of the Water Commission. In the days of the volunteer fire department he was an active member of Engine Company No. 3, and is prominently identified with the exempt firemen. Mr. Chesley has always been in the front rank in everything having a tendency to advance the interests of Sacramento, and to add to her reputation for hospitality. He was chairman, and an active manager of the committee, having in charge the entertainment of the visiting members of the National Encampment, G. A. R., and the marvelous success of that entertainment will always mark a brilliant page in the history of Sacramento. Mr. Chesley is a kind-hearted, hospitable gentleman of the old school, who has been an eye-witness and participant in the wonderful progress of California from the pioneer days; nevertheless he yet ranks among the most active and enterprising men of the capital city. His fund of information concerning the early days of California has a peculiar interest, and his anecdotes of those times, bringing together, as they do, scenes and incidents, both humorous and pathetic, have a charm which makes them always appreciated by his friends.

G. W. Chesley

This gentleman is located on Front Street at No. 51. He is importer and wholesale dealer in general groceries, fine wines and liquors. This house ranks among the old and prominent mercantile business enterprises of Sacramento, having been established in 1856 by Mr. Chesley and Mayor Bryant, of San Francisco. Mr. Chesley is now sole proprietor. The building is 50x 150 feet, two floors. The amount of stock on hand in this house is great, and to which additions are made almost daily from the East. Anything in the grocery line may be obtained from this establishment; also the choicest and most celebrated brands of wines and liquors. They are agents for the renowned Gilt Edge Old Bourbon, and all the favorite brands of Kentucky whiskey; also for the Budweiser Beer. The trade of the house is as a wide-spread as it is large, embracing Nevada, a large portion of California, Southern Oregon, and the Territories.
Mr. Chesley is a pioneer of the Pacific Coast. He sailed from New York Feb. 5, 1849, on the steamer Crescent City for Aspinwall, and arrived in San Francisco by the steamer Oregon June 13th of the same year-- that being his second trip to the Coast. He engaged in the auction and commission business, in the firm name of Johnson, Chesley & Clark, and did a leading business in the city. In May, 1850, Mr. C. removed to Sacramento, when he continued the auction business until 1856, when he formed a copartnership with A. J. Bryant, the present Mayor of San Francisco City, in the wholesale grocery line. Mr. Chesley is still a young-looking man. He is an active businessman. He is considered one of those stand-bys of the city, and stands always ready to assist in all matters that tend to its interest. He is a native of Providence, RI.

According to California Death records, George W. Chesley died 11/23/1891 in Sacramento County. Alice Chesley died 12/27/1891. They are buried in Sacramento City Cemetery.

Chesley lived with his daughter Wealtha Chesley Kramer and family near Hull WI. Also Ida Chesley's family is in WI. Ida was sister to my great grandfather Charles Edward Chesley.

He married Sarah Carter ca 1885 and after she died before 1900 he married Hannah Buckingham. Harry is the son of Isaac and Margaret Allen Chesley. I would like to put to bed that Edith Chesley was a daughter of James Dewitt Chesley and the Orphan he adopted Rose Prouty. James Dewitt Chesley did adopt Edith Chesley, but I feel he was not the father.

It states in 1910 census that James D. Chesley had been married 26 years to Abigail French, at the time of the census being taken May 19, 1910. There is a female in her and James Chesley's household in 1910 called Edith Chesley and it states she is a adopted daughter of James D. Chesley. Edith is 9 years old and she was born in Iowa and mother born in Indiana and father born in Minnesota or it could be written as unknown, but not sure hard to read where the father was born.
Also there is another female in the household in 1910, Rosa Prouty, called a Servant. Rosa Prouty is the natural mother of Edith Chesley. Rosa Bella Prouty and George Dumcrager probably were not legally married but had an illegitimate daughter Edith who was adopted my James Dewitt Chesley and Abigail Chesley. In the 1910 census it shows that Rosa Prouty was born about 1880 in Missouri. This is wrong she was born May 129 1879 in Noble Co., Indiana.

The Clay County Recorder's Office in Spencer, Clay County, Iowa has birth records on the birth of Edith Chesley (birth records show her name as Edith Chesley, born June 15, 1901 In Clay Township, Mother Rosie Prouty, Father George Dumcrager. Her burial stone shows Eda A. Rausch 1901-1941. Fred Rausch was her second husband.

After much research into the Sepratists of the early 1600's and the Mayflower etc., I am sure our line will go back to Philip in England. I truly believe they went to Holland and rather than go to America, stayed and became "Holandized" even to changing the name to a Dutch spelling. At this time I really have no idea just how to go about getting any info on all the Sepratists that left England for Holland. Just how Pieter got to France I'm not sure yet but.....

I would suggest you try to get a birth and/or death certificate for your Hiram. You may be able to find out where he was born thru the census, the state at least. Also query boards are really great.

Our Hiram never married to the best of our knowledge. He was a private during the civil war for Illinois.

Who is Paul Chesley, father of Mary Abby Chesley Studley?

I know that Paul was the father of Mary Abbie Chesley Studley and that her birth was abt 10 Jul 1828 in Madbury, New Hampshire and that she died 10 Sep 1856 of childbed fever in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. All this information is on her death certificate. I have not been able to connect this information to any of the Chesley families in Madbury. I hope someone can help. This is one of my brick walls.

Nathaniel Chesley married Hannah Murray 10 May 1781 in Rockingham Co., NH. He served in the Rev. War. Their son Thomas married Hannah Sanborn in Danville, VT in 1804 then removed to Stafford, Genesee Co., NY by 1822. The family removed to Lorain Co., OH in 1847. Thomas' son, Lorenzo Dow Chesley, married Lucinda _____ in Genesee Co ca. 1841 and they went to Ohio with father Thomas. By 1852 Lorenzo and Lucinda were in Burr Oak, St Joseph Co., MI where she died in 1860. He died there in 1871. They are both buried in the Sanborn Cemetery there. Can you help me verify Lucinda's maiden name? Will gladly exchange info on this family.

a copy of the coat of arms I saw growing up was a field of white or silver with two horizontal crimson stripes. my great-grandfather moved to the washington D.C. area from wisconson.

Is your gggrandfather William S.Chesley with 12 children,6 of each? William lived with his son EDWARD for two years in DC, He died 1 June 1878 in DC age 88.
Have more info on this line back to Philip in NH in 1600's.

Still finding out about more of the family and now I believe there may be three different branches here in the US. Linda's in NY, Our Philip in NH, and a Philip in Md. Don't know if they will ever join into one line.Do hope that we all find out the answer to that.

John Chesley (1805-1867) of Rochester, NH

Does anyone know the parents of a John Chesley (1805-1867) who was married to Lavinia/Lovina Chamberlain (1808-1882)? Census records show him living in Rochester, NH between 1830 and 1860. He, his wife, and several descendants are buried in Gonic Village Cemetery.

Shadrach Chesley and family are also buried in the same cemetery. Shadrach was the right age to be John's father but I haven't found any evidence of how John and Shadrach are related.

I've got one set of cousins who are descended from John and another set who are cousins of Shadrach's wife, Jemima Ham, so it would be neat if Shadrach & Jemima were John's parents.

CHESLEY, GEO. W., a native of Dover, New Hampshire; now lives in Sacramento; in early life he was a clerk in a dry goods store in Boston; from there went to Providence, Rhode Island, and engaged in same business; in 1849 left for California on the second trip of the steamer Crescent City, and arrived in San Francisco, on the steamer Oregon's second trip, June 13th, 1849. Here he engaged in the auction and commission business for a year, then removed to Sacramento and continued the same business. After the fire of 1852 Mr. Chesley returned to San Francisco, and was, by Governor Bigler, appointed a Notary Public in 1853. Returning to Sacramento he formed a partnership with A. J. Bryant, ex-Mayor of San Francisco, and engaged in business as importers and wholesale dealers in choice groceries, wines, liquors, etc. Having bought his partner's interest, he yet continues the business at No. 51 Front street. Mr. Chesley married Alice M. Whipple, of Massachusetts; they have had two boys and one girl, none of whom are living. Post Office, Sacramento.

Please note the title of my original post was slightly incorrect. I am interested in the Chesley family group that moved from MD to VA to Missouri. John Chesley and his son Robert moved from MD to VA then Roberts children moved to Missouri with their uncles in 1839 (see reference below).

I am most interested in any information on the children of: Robert Chesley b: 1782 Calvert Co. MD. d: Feb 10 1826 King George Co. VA. (son of John Chesley and Mary Ashcom Parran) and Elizabeth Bunbury b: abt. 1786 King George Co. VA. d: abt. 1824 (daughter of William Bunbury and Elizabeth Short).

From "Genealogies of Virginia Families, Volume IV, Extant Wills from Counties Whose Records Have Been Destroyed, Notes on the Short Family", page 806: "Elizabeth ("Betsy") Bunbury was born in King George County in 1786. She was mentioned in the will of her grandmother, Theodosia (Mathews) Short and was one of the heirs of her cousin, Miss Mary Mathews of "Grantsfield." She married on 8 October, 1811, Captain Robert Chesley (circa 1782-1826) eldest son of Lieutenant John Chesley of Point Patience, Calvert County, Maryland, and Prince William County, Virginia, whose fragmentary will remains of record. The mother of Captain Robert Chesley was Mary Ashcom Parran and she was married to John Chesley in Calvert County, Maryland, on January 5, 1779. They were both members of old and prominent families of the Providence of Maryland." "Elizabeth (Bunbury) Chesley died about 1824..."

From "Genealogies of Virginia Families, Volume IV, Extant Wills from Counties Whose Records Have Been Destroyed, Notes on the Short Family", page 807: "William Bunbury, Jr. and his brother, John Short Bunbury, moved to Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1839 carrying with them the six youngest children of Captain Robert and Elizabeth (Bunbury) Chesley and three of the five children of William and Katherine (Chesley) Bunbury.

Who were "the six youngest children of Captain Robert and Elizabeth (Bunbury) Chesley" ???????
