Re: James Dewey Chessher

The Florida Death Index (at Ancestry.com) provides these dates:

James Dewey Chesser, b. Feb. 8, 1910, d Feb 16, 1974 in Okaloosa Co. Florida.

An uncited source states that James's birthdate was Feb 25, 1910 in Covington County, Alabama, and that he was the son of James Wright Chesser (b. 1881 Covington Co. Alabama) and Lena Davis. His death date is the same in this online source.

Hopefully, this information will be helpful for CHESSHER researchers (and surname variations such as CHESER, CHESSER, CHESHER) as they try to sort through all the possibilities and gives a starting point. Be sure to verify all sources and good luck!

Yes, I know, there was also another James who was the father to James that married Martha Hickman. He also had a brother named Daniel, who was a in the 1936 census for Jasper county texas. I know the dans you are talking about are the son and grandson of James and Martha Hickman Chessher. The record I found would have made the dan you are thinking of too young to be on a tax roll. I am working one generation before James and Martha.

I think the best thing I can do is send you the information I already have on the Chesshers. James and Martha Hickman came into Trinity County before it was Trinity County, it was still known as HOuston County. They had children with them, Dan, Celia, William, and one more that I found on the 1850 census for Houston County. Mary, Cassie's grandmother wasn't born until 1853. Trinity County was made a county in 1860, taking part of Houston and part of Polk County. I will email you that info in the morning. Later cuz!!

Lillie
Am researching the children of William b. 1827 TN and Sarah J. Marsh married in Polk Co., Texas 9/8/1849. My g-grandmother was their daughter, Elizabeth Pink Tipton b. 1861, her sister Maggie b. 1859 are the only children I know of for them. What information can we share? Is this your line? Thanks, D.
Re: Two Jean Johnsons researching CHESSHER!

Hello, I am the other Jean Johnson. Maiden name Tiner. My mother in law is the great grand daughter of James S. Chessher and Martha Patsy Hickman of Trinity County Texas. James was the son of Captain James Chessher who settled in Texas before the Texas Revolution and that is where the rank came from. I dont know who that James's parents were yet, but we might be kin after all with the variations of spelling. If you would like to share information, you may contact me at lrjtj@tyler.net.

Brandi,
I am the granddaughter of Ben Chessher, son of George Chessher who is buried in Nixon. My aunt is still living and I have heard her speak of Lillard Chessher. She probably knows you information or knows who does. I attended my George's funeral in Nixon in 1959 and met some of the Chesshers. I am approximately the same age as your father. If you are interested I will contact my aunt and find the connection between Lillard and George. I have an obit for George which lists his brothers and sisters but not parents. There are still Chesshers around Seguin who would know your info.
Sharon
