If your William is the son of William Cheyne and Mary Annand/Armand, and twin of Robert, there is more to his story.

William had a son out of wedlock with Elizabeth (Betsy) Keith in 1848. He left his son, James, with his parents.

James married Christian Crichton and had 12 children. Their oldest, James, married and emigrated to Canada with his family.

Death of James Cheyne, Waterloo Veteran & Chelsea Pensioner, New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

The following is taken from The Buchan Observer, dated Friday, May 29, 1868 and I have replicated it here in case it is of help or interest to anyone else. I have no known connection to the family.

“DEATH OF A WATERLOO VETERAN – Another of the few surviving veterans of Waterloo, died on the 20th inst., at Sandy Stripe, New Pitsligo. James Cheyne joined the 92nd Highlanders while quite a young man, and was a member of that regiment till he obtained his discharge after the close of the war. He was engaged in the battles of Vittoria, Salamanca, Valentia, Corruna, Badajos, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo; and was wont to tell that he came out of these engagements without even a scar. The only mishap which occurred to him during his military career, was an injury to a leg by frost. This was the source of considerable annoyance to him for years afterwards. A brother, who also joined the army, was more unfortunate, he having been slain at Waterloo. James was possessed of good talents, and his narratives of the stirring scenes which he had passed through, and had witnessed, will long be remembered by those who had the pleasure of hearing them. He was of a lively temperament, had a fine, hardy, robust, constitution, rendered more robust by the severe discipline of the army; and had reached the advanced age of 85 years.”

(Notes:
The entry in the 1868 Death Register for the Parish of Aberlour in the County of Aberdeen shows:
No. 22; James Cheyne, Chelsea Pensioner (widower of Margaret Scroggie), died 1868, May Twentieth at 9h 45m am at Sandy Stripe, Glaslaw, male, age 83 years. Parents: John Cheyne, Farmer (deceased) & Ann Cheyne ms Ruddiman (deceased). Cause: Old Age. No Medical Attendant. Informant: John McRitchie (Neighbour). Registered 1868, May 23, at Aberdeen by J.L. Ironside, Registrar.

According to the IGI:
James Cheyne married Margaret Scroggie 12 June 1824, Gamrie
John Cheyne married Anne Ruddiman 1 June 1783, Alvah, Banffshire.)
Re: Confused

The earliest I have found reference to the name Cheyne is in a book about the Cheyne's & Wyatts where the name comes to the UK from France with the invasion by William the Conqueror in 1066.

From there on they dispersed all over the UK and and in Chelsea, London there is even a street called "Cheyne Walk"

If you have access to old TV programmes there is a UK Channel 4 production series called "Time Team" where in one episode they investigate an old house by archaeological investigation on some of the more colourful / disreputable ancestors in the family around the 1400.1500 I think.

I have so far traced my own tree back to the 1650's that are predominantly based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and so far appear reputable.

I hope this helps and if you need to do any tracing of ancestors in the UK one web site that is very good is Scotland People - there is a small cost element but it is very good.

Regards

Graham Cheyne

I have also spoken with a Great Aunt from Edmonton that is now passed on, as well as some relatives from Ontario and Scotland. My parents were over last year and met some of the family back there. How does your family tie in with the Cheynes? Maybe you could E Mail me some of the information you have gathered.

Thanks. Bonnie.

I have discussed the evidence with living members of the family and we are agreed that my wife is probably the great grand daughter of Thomas Donald and Hellen Cheyne. It all hinges on the interpretation of the birth certificate of an illegitimate child. We may never know for sure.
When the 1911 census appears in 1912 we may discover more, but at the moment I am reluctant to include any more details.
Regards
John
Dear James,

I got very excited when I read the surnames but I am afraid my connections to these names are further back.

In Auchterles, Parish of Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland,

William Cheyne and Margaret Massie married on the 26th October, 1839.

They had two sons George born 21st December 1839 and James, christened 6th June, 1841.

After this Margaret disappears and George and James are brought up at their grandfather's farm in Fyvie. His name was James Cheyne and his wife was Isabel Horne.

I lose George and James after the 1851 census. Do they connect to you?

Regards

Abigail
