Harrison Cheyney is my great grandfather as well...:-)

From: http://iagenweb.org/boards/mills/obituaries/index.cgi?review...

GLENWOOD OPINION-TRIBUNE
DATED MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1932:

FUNERAL SERVICES
FOR H. H. CHEYNEY
HELD HERE SUNDAY

Hundreds Assemble to Pay Tribute
to Memory of One Who Had Long
Been Active in Affairs of County
----- I. O. O. F. Services at Grave

Persons coming from practically all parts of Mills county assembled here in the First Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon to pay tribute to the memory of H. H. Cheyney, farmer, stockman, merchant, banker and for many years one of Mills county’s leading citizens.

The genuine sorrow evidenced by young and old and by persons from all walks of life bespoke the wide sphere of influence of his life’s activities and the respect and esteem in which he was held by all who knew him.

The service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. LeRoy Lippitt, of the Congregational church. Music for the service was furnished by a quartet consisting of Harry Hamilton, G. K. Johnson, Wm. Rodabaugh and S. M. Criswell, with Mrs. Clyde Genung at the pipe organ.

The floral offerings were profuse and the following ladies had charge of the flowers: Mrs. Lewis Robinson, Mrs. Frank Choate, Mrs. R. J. Allen, Mrs. J. E. Wilkins, Miss Hormel and Mary Rathke. The honorary pallbearers were J. T. Murphy, Carl Spetman, C. R. Buffington, H. L. Kruse, J. L. Ross, C. O. Dick, Grover Mickelwait and Milo Reaser. The active pallbearers were W. C. Rathke, Art Byers, H. A. French, F. J. Wallace, J. R. Graves and Carl Buch.

The members of the Odd Fellows lodge attended the services in a body and acted as an escort of honor as the body was borne on it’s ways to the Glenwood cemetery where the ritualistic services of the order were given by W. C. Rathke and J. L. Ross at the open grave.

Harrison Hinkson Cheyney was born Sept. 14, 1870, in Elam, Pa. He was the son of Robert S. Cheyney and Mary Earey. He spent his boyhood days in Pennsylvania and moved to Glenwood, Iowa with his parents in 1883. He attended the Glenwood public school and after finishing school was associated with his father and brothers in the Cheyney meat market in Glenwood.

On Nov. 10, 1897, he was united in marriage with Marjorie Hamilton. To this union were born Paul H. Cheyney and Marjorie Cheyney Bailey.

In January, 1909 he was elected a director in the Mills County National bank and was elected vice president in January, 1912. Three years later he became president of that organization and served in that capacity for 13 years, until January, 1928.

He served as a member of the city council for four years until he was installed as a member of the Mills County Board of Supervisors. He held that position until December 1921.

He was a member of the Congregational church and acted as a trustee of that church.

He was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for 40 years, and held offices continuously during that period both in the subordinate lodge and the Western Star Encampment. He was also affiliated with the Rebekah lodge.

He was a Master Mason and a member of the Eastern Star.

He also belonged to the Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters.

He was a Rotarian from 1922 until 1929.

He suffered a stroke of paralysis July 16, 1926, from which he never entirely recovered. Following this he was unable to continue an active part in business. From August, 1931, constantly failing health confined him to his home until his death, Feb. 18, 1932, at the age of 61 years, 5 months.

He leaves his wife, Marjorie Cheyney; his son, Paul H. Cheyney, Glenwood; his daughter, Marjorie Bailey, of Omaha, Ne., and two grandchildren, Jane Cheyney and Harrison Bailey. He also leaves four sisters, Margaret Tolles of Norfolk, Va.; Anna Donaldson, of Beverly, N. J.; Martha Eaton, of Centralia, Wash.; and Edith Gaines, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and three brothers, John E., of Glenwood; Paris G., of Glenwood, and Charles H., of Omaha, Neb.

Relatives from out of town in attendance at the funeral services were his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Bailey; his brother, Chas. Cheyney and son Robert, all of Omaha, and his sister, Mrs. Edith Gaines of Excelsior Springs, Mo.

A great reference (I may not have the title exactly right) is "The History of the Sharpless/Sharples Family" published, I believe in 1969 or perhaps 1966. I have this at home (am at work now)and it covers the Cheyney family from the early 1800s to late 1960s. If you have difficulty finding this book, email me at tuckee@wolfenet.com, and I will look it up for you.

Looking for Cheyney's

Hello All,
I am the Great Grand-Daughter of Harvey Guyer Cheyney, he was born in Ohio in 1865, he married Ida May Baker of Nebraska. Harvey's Father (no name) served in the Civil War, his Grandfather, Charlie Cheyney served in Washington's Army. According to my Grandmother's notes, we arrived in America before The American Revolution. It is stated but not documented that we were of English Nobility.
On a further note, yet not documented; we were of Norman-French Ancestry. Ralph de Cheyney under William the Conquerer, Robert de Cheyney, Bishop of Lincoln in 1147 and William de Cheyney of Norfolk in 1156. Also a Sir John de Cheyney of Norfolk in 1399 who fought with Henry of Richmond. Again these are just notes but if anyone could help me find Documentation of these people, I would really appreciate it.
Please email me at: JGervaisbr@aol.com
Thank you
Julie Gervais-Brinegar

Cheyney/Dailey/Evans connection?

Hello- I have been wondering for some time if I have a connection to the Cheyney family. Perhaps someone can help me. I am descended from Cheyney Dailey Evans born in 1849 in Chester Co. PA. His parents were John Evans(1810-1868) and Sarah Ann Dailey(1818-1897). Nothing earlier is known about the Evans line. John & Sarah Evans lived mostly in the Upper Oxford area, but were in Dilworthtown for a time.
Sarah Dailey had 2 brothers..Eber F. Dailey and Cheyney W. Dailey. I can not find any info on the father, but the mother of Sarah, Cheyney & Eber was Elizabeth(Eliza) W. ______. (1797-1862) My ancestor Cheyney Dailey Evans obviously carries his mothers maiden name as middle name. He and his uncle are both named Cheyney. I have often wondered if this might be Elizabeth's maiden name? I'm from SE PA so I'm aware of Cheyney Univ. and the fact that this was a prominent family. It seems to have been thoroughly researched. I wonder if I'm on the right track here??? Any suggestions appreciated.
