You probably should choose a specific piece of information that you want to find, such as "Where was my grandfather born?" or "When and where were his parents married?" or "What were my grandfather's siblings' names?" Start with the present and work backwards. Once you have a specific goal, then you can research (or ask for advice on) which specific records are likely to give you the answers.

Just trying to find folks in the US Census isn't a very good goal because they might not be there! Millions of folks refused to answer, or they were traveling at the time, or the names were misspelled drastically, etc. etc.

I'd say a good first step would be to get your grandfather's birth certificate. It may have different parents' names on it -- simply because the "informant" at the death might have gotten the names wrong on the death certificate. A death certificate is much more unreliable that a birth certificate, given the passage of time and the situation.

Also, don't ever forget -- not all records are online! -- not even one-tenth of the records are online! You need to go to the sources themselves, when necessary.

Need suggestions from a more experienced researcher

I put some time into this a few years ago and have just come back to work on it some more. I'm having the same problem, in that I can't seem to get anywhere with my two grandfathers.\

The 1920 Census shows my maternal grandfather living with his brother (head of house), his sister, and mother. The mother lists as "married" but the husband doesn't live in the house. From my grandfather's death record I have a name for both of his parents (Elijah Jones, Eliza Nixon)and their birth state, KY. I've done the search here over and over and can't find any matches that make sense. My grandfather doesn't even show up as a child in the 1900 or 1910 Census even though he would have been a child at home then. The only time I saw the parents two names together, the couple was black and none of the children's names were right. Now for a moment, I did think "hey, my uncles were always tanned well!" but the family is listed as white on the 1920 Census.

With my paternal grandfather I have his name (Paul E Chezem), birth date, and birth state and nothing turns up that matches.

So what would a more experienced person do in either of these cases? I would really appreciate some advice. Thank you.
My grandmother Lenora Alice Chezem Reynolds was born in Cumberland County in just outside Jewett, IL. Her mother and grandmother both had farms in that area. To this day that area is called Chezem Hill. I do remember seeing the name of Delbert in our family history. I will try and take a look at it tonight and get back with you. There is an old family cemetary located in the area. I found it last year in a wooded area out in a farmer's field. I hope to get back over there and clean the area up--many downed tree limbs, etc. I'll let you know what I find out.

I never got to meet him. He and Ruby divorced when my dad and his twin sister were young. I knew he had Cherokee in him but was never sure how much. I"d love to find out. I have school loans I sure could use some help out with them if we have have enough to qualify for! Even my daughters?? I have pictures of my grandpa and he does look very much like he has some native american in him as well as my dad and my aunt. If you send me your email, I can send you a pic of my granpa. I'd love to see a pic of his brother. Was that the only two in that family? Are you the one that said that Squire was adopted or were they both adopted?? Who was their birth parents and who adopted them? I never heard that story before?? You can email me back at horselovinmama57@yahoo.com. I'd love to chat with you.

Sandy Gesswein (Chezem)

I am many greats granddaughter of John Chezum and would love to know how to get the Chezum, Chisolm, Cheeseman book and would like to get into DAR through him. A distant cousin belongs to SAR through him so it won't be a problem for me. My descendants are Chezum, Ridgeways, Lee, Stetler and to me. Thanks for any help. My bigger email box is: memaw@ktc.com
