Tignish Chiassons

Hi there. I'm looking for information on my Chiasson lineage. My great grandfather was Angus (Agneau) Chiasson born on Dec. 29, 1870 in Tignish. He married Catherine Gallant about 1890 and moved his family to the US in 1904.
His father was Sylvain, born Mar. 31, 1839 in Tignish, married to Thersile (Therese) Richard. Sylvain was the son of Cyprien Chiasson and Marie Arsenau. Cyprien was born in 1815.
What I'm not sure of is who Cyprien's father was. I believe it to be Meleme Chiasson, born in 1790, married to Marie Poirier. I also believe Meleme was the son of Jean who was the son of Jacques, born in 1758.
If anyone can verify this line or has other helpful information I would appreciate it greatly.
Hi there Kato9tails,
I would love to help you- and as far as Chiasson/Chaisson being from Cape Breton- well, some of them were and are still in the Cheticamp area of Cape Breton.

The Chiasson line begins with a single man named Guyon Giasson dit Lavalee. He is the first Giason/Giasson/Chiasson/Chaisson to come from France and settle in the new area of Acadia. He was a trapper and a farmer and probably had his hand at many things. He moved about the area of Port Royal to an area called Beaubasin. Port Royal is now called Annapolis Royal and Beaubasin is Amherst- both of which are part of mainland Nova Scotia.

Where are you from? Are you in the US or Canada?
Amedee is such a great name and I have seen it used many times in Acadian family trees.

I would like to correspond with you through my main email at home- please contact me through
l.mackinnon@pei.sympatico.ca

Please have your father go back in his head as far as he can to name his own father and grandfather and possibly even his great grandfather and mothers too...
All of these will help me to piece together the tracing of now to Guyon.

All the best,
can't wait to hear from you!
Louise

yes they were native and they were my great grandfather and granmother. She was pure native and raised by a priest and my grandfather was a train conductor in Lawerence, Mass.
Going back 2-3 generations to the beginning of Prince Edward Island, their grandfather was one of 3 who founded Prince Edward Island while the British searched the island for them. General Rollo, as in Rollo Bay rescued them and they purchased two lot of land and these are known as the ancestral location of the Chaisson Family. They are buried on Prince Edward Island. My granfather Aubin remarried and is buried in Culver City, Calif. Also we are closely related to the musical Chaisson of Arcadian music.
please e-mail me at mec@maui.net. Would love to hear from you. My Father's name is Aubin Joseph Chaisson Jr. and his brother is named Clarence "Larry" Chaisson. Their grandmother was native and then reeived an Angelican Name from the priest who raised her. NO one knows who Michel Hache-Galant's father truly is... it is ONLY speculation on the part of researchers...

Michel Hache-Galant was born of an unknown French father and an Eskimo woman, as per his baptism in Trois-Rivieres... he appeared to have been raised by Michel LeNeuf...

Everybody has been wondering the samething... I don't say it is totaly impossible that the priest made a mistake and forgot the word "petite" in front of Eskimaude... but, it is also very likely that there was no error...

People tend to look at natives the same way they look at Europeen and focus too much on the geography, ignoring the fact that natives were use to travel very long distances on a more or less regular bases... and being unaware of inter-relations between various Native groups...

So, unless someone can proove otherwise r new finding are made... I believe we have to accept the record "as is"...

St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) July 6, 2003

Elias J. Chiasson, an English professor at St. Louis University for more than 30 years, died Thursday (July 3, 2003) of cancer. He was 85 and lived in Dupo.

Professor Chiasson was born May 29, 1918, in the coal mining region of Nova Scotia. His father, once a coal miner, opened a general store so his children might be able to choose a different path in life. Professor Chiasson worked in the mines but later became the only one of 15 children in his family to complete college. A boxer as an undergraduate, he
received degrees from both French and English universities in Canada. He earned a doctorate in 18th-century English literature from the University of Toronto.

Professor Chiasson joined the Canadian Navy in World War II and served aboard a destroyer escort as a lieutenant.

On Aug. 7, 1944, he married Mary O'Brien in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They had seven children. She died in 1989.

He taught at Rockhurst College in Kansas City until 1953, when he moved to St. Louis to teach at St. Louis University. He remained there until 1987, when he retired as a full professor.

On May 6, 1994, he married Jean Jackson LaForge in Cahokia.

Full text, including names of surviving family, may be found at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/NOVA-SCOTIA/2005-09/112... .
I spoke to a funeral home that made the arrangements for my grandmother's uncle in 1995. They told me My gt Granduncle? Benjamin L (leo) Ellis died at 92 years old and the informant of his information was by a "sister Mary Green, his Niece" and gave me an address in ny ny. (the address is no longer listed to her)
When contacting the Archidiocese regarding information on the plot all they would tell me was that his wife resides next to him and that her name was Helen Chiasson (their spelling of name) They would not give me further information unless I paid them a genealogical research fee!( which is too high for my min wage income!) Anyway If anyone may have information on this connection please contact me. thank you
Danielle

Hi Grace, I am looking for my paternal grandmother who was 100% Noth American Indian. I have just found this out since my mother is getting older (74) and is at times mentioning facts of the family. She is full Japanese and
remembers somethings. I just found this out about 2 months ago. She married a Chaisson and bore Aubin Chaisson my grandfather I never met and his first marriage to estelle newcomb ended in divorce and both brothers were separated. Clarence and Aubin Joseph Chaisson jr. My father the youngest went with my grandmother and Clarence stayed with his father and remarried and had according to Clarence a couple of brothers. My father went into the army and we traveled all my life until I went to Boston University in 1976. My father did not speak much about his family and was told that Clarence had died in the war while my father was in vietnam in 1966 or 1967. Now my father is deceased in April 30, 1997 and divorced my Japanese Mother Yoshiko after 38 years of marriage and then passed away in 2 years. My Mother doesn't have a real command of the English language although she mentioned to me about my great gradmother married to my great grand as being full blooded Indian. Other than that she cannot remember much details.

after this revelation I am fascinated and determined to find out more of her, her tribe, culture, pictures etc...and want to vist these places next summer, as I drive up the east coast....to PEI, because of my full blooded continous heritage and now finding out about my greatgrandmother, I have several times in class who live and work with Indians in say they see alot more Native American features in me, and he is married to a full blooded Japanese girl from Japan.

Can you help me please?

I can look for one but chances are that if they lived in Cheticamp (in which Grand-Etang is located), it won't be there. I have it on good authority from Edmond Burns at the Centre de généalogie Père Charles Aucoin, located at Les Trois Pignons in that town that there is a huge gap in the registers from the late 1840s to the 1860s. Several years of records are missing from these registers, unfortunately. Like I said, I will look and see if I can locate one, and if not, will tell you in a later post. Dennis

I suppose I should be happy that at least on his sources page, he gave me credit, but I am not. Thanks to this web site, and others like it, who have taken large chunks of my personally researched and duly copyrighted and published conclusions on the Chiasson family and others, it's no wonder that the sales of my CD (being sold to help a non-profit society in Canada pay for further research materials) have gone down the toilet. His having at least asked my permission might also have been a nice gesture since I was the one who originally published much of the material on his site, other than Stephen White, but then again, I guess that's asking too much of "researchers" (tongue in cheek) these days.
