Chick forenames Spencer,Russell or Jefferson

Hi everyone,
We are researching the Chick family from Dorset and our line has several uses of the forenames Spencer,Jefferson and Russell(often used as Richard Russell). They have been in use from the 1700s and are even in an Australian line. We know that some of "our" Chicks emigrated to U.S.A. in around 1800 and would love to know if those names have turned up in the States. Our line came from around Wyke Regis in Dorset and can be traced back to around 1680 so far. Please get in touch if any of this applies to your Chicks,
Regards,
Alison
Hi Tammy, I posted an answer to your previous query about William Chick some time ago but you've obviously not received it .William Chick was transported to Australia in around the 1820s and his wife Elizabeth Watts followed later. He was a saddler and harness maker. If you get this, please contact me as he is in my direct line and I have loads of information about the family ,going back to about 1690. Regards, Alison

My CHICK family are from Kent in the main and then from Middlesex before emmigration to Michigan US and South Africa resp. I wish I could find a connection with Chick's in Somerset as there are there was our isolated family in Goudhurst in Kent to 1853 and a Brother and his family who moved from Tunbridge to Hampton Wick and Brixton in the late1840's before emmigrating to the US in 1850.
Apart from these two brothers and their families only a few very elderly Chick's remained in Kent .
I am sorry I could not help.
Cyril Chick

Hi Debbie
Thanks for your email. This is all very exciting.

My father was Dorothy Smith's first child and although he went to primary school as Albert Chick , Dorothy left him with her mother, Elizabeth Smith (nee Bowden), and he changed his name to Smith. He showed me the location of the Long Acre restaurant once when we were in London.

Dad married my mother Daphne (they met in Bristol when King's College London was evacuated there) and I have a brother Peter. Dad said he didn't know what happened to his mother, Dorothy, but there was something about her later marrying a man who owned a biscuit business. Dad didn't keep in touch with his half-sister Dorothy (although she stayed with my mother when Dad was away in the RAF) and his half-brother Philip was drowned at sea during WWII. Nor did his mother keep in touch with him (so far as I know - I never met her). I have some pictures of Dad with his mother, Dorothy, when he was v. young.
On Dad's birth certificate, Dorothy is recorded as living at 4 Grayshott Road in Lavender Hill, Battersea, and being a cinema usher. Dad died 10 years ago this week.

Who is Peggy? And where do you fit in?

Warm regards

Paul Smith
44 (0)1380 817 094
psmith01@globalnet.co.uk

Peggy ( who now lives with us) used to look after her children, she had a few problems.

I think one of her children went to Australia or America whom we have been in touch with , but a while ago I will have to look it all up.

I have the details here and lots more.
My father's mother was Dorothy Smith and she had several brothers and sisters. She married a Chick in 1925, I think. They ran a fish restaurant in Long Acre, Covent Garden, London. Dorothy married again and had a daughter (also Dorothy) and a son (killed in WWII). My father (Edgar Albert) was the older Dorothy's first son.

Pam,
I have just started researching the McClearn family, so I don't have a death date for William. I have Mildred as being born in 1915 or 1916 though (based on the 1920 census). I also have an unknown McClearn born before 1910 (probably based on number of children born vs number still living in 1910 census). I would be thrilled to receive some pictures. My email is PIPEL1961@yahoo.com.
My "direct" line is actually to William's nephew, and I have only one picture of him (James W. McClearn) from 1937.
Thanks again for the information!
Michelle

Hi Rachel,

All I know about Chick is that a relation of mine, Mahala Cornhill, married George Alred Chick in St. Helier, Jersey on the 14 February 1847. He was born in Weymouth, father Robert, and she was born in Brixham, Devon. Not sure why they went to Jersey.

The went to the US, not sure when or why and had 6 children. Mahala died in childbirth on the 19th August 1857 and George re-married and went to Utah.

I believe they were Mormoms, as the names of the children would reflect this.

Hope this links in to your family in some way, please let me know, or if I can be of any further help.

kind regards,
Brenda

Yes I have all of this information. I'm still uncertain as to what they were doing in Jersey, but it was there that they joined the Mormon church and later came to Utah - where Mahala died - and George moved to Kansas.
-------
Oh!!
As I was searching through some records to find what information I might want to see if you have, I came across some information that my mother-in-law sent along to me . . . are you possibly "Brenda" who was conversing with a woman named Kathy Chick (from Idaho) a few years back??? :) (If you are, that is TOO funny!)

I would love to have you email me! - To know if you've found any additional information. rachelchick(at)gmail(dot)com

Yes I see what you are talking about. But when you look at the 1880 census for Peru, Indiana he is listed as being 50 years old, unless he lied about his age in this census or the census taker wrote it down wrong. There is a 15 years difference between the ages. I dont know how to account for this.

Leroy F Chick

I have hit a dead wall. Leroy F Chick was born about 1830 in Maine according to the census records. He died sometime in 1883 in Peru, Indiana shortly before his fifth child was born. Cannot find anyone with this name in census records from 1850,1860. He was married in 1868 to Minerva Ellen Hawkins in Peru, Indiana. They had five children together. There is a Leroy F Chick born in 1845 in Maine but according to a court record my Leroy was sued because they thought since was so much older than Minerva he was after her money and it was not for love. If the one born in 1845 is my Leroy he would only be 4 years older and not the one mentioned in the court papers. Any help would be much appreciated.

Leroy F Chick is in the 1870 census for Peru Indiana with wife Ellen and daughter Ida. They were indexed as CLUCK. Their ages are mixed up as well. It appears the census taker wrote an M in the age, then wrote 25 on top of it. This would be the Leroy F Chick b 1845 Limington, ME, son of Orin and Frances Ann (Boynton) Chick. Email me for more detail.

My first Robert Bryant Chick was born around 1801. He died just before the 1841 census so I don't know where he was born. In London he was a 'Coal Hauler'.

Depending on when your Elizabeth Bryan married her Chick husband he might well have been an older brother to your Joseph B-C from Taunton. I have a theory that Robert had an older brother John but John might have been a step or half-brother - maybe even a cousin.

Helen

After checking the 1900 census for Wm. McClearn, I see where they are related. Caroline Rose Gordon was born in August, 1880, in Stoneboro, Mercer County, Pa. the daughter of Alexander and Isabella Forrester Gordon of Scotland who arrived in America in 1867. In 1903 Caroline married William McClearn. Caroline and Wm. had five children. Caroline Rose Gordon McClearn died on May 21, 1937. Do you have a death date and cause for William mcClearn or any additional information on their children? Do you have pictures of Wm and Caroline and the kids. I do and will e-mail them to you if you send me your e-mail address.

Ellsworth Emmet McClearn 1909-1983
Elliot McClearn 1913
Kenneth McClearn 1915	possible 24 June 1917 d.
