While it has been some time since you posted....I'm currently trying to follow my Chickering family roots. My great grandparents came from St. Johnsbury,VT - family stories indicate that the Chickering family originally came from Boston. Do you have any information on a Silas Chickering?

female Chickering married DeCamp

I'm looking for information about a female Chickering, born in Vermont, who married a DeCamp, possibly from Ohio or Illinois, and moved to CA. The marriage was probably in the 1880's, since they had a son, Ray, who was born 1/6/1889 in CA, and married May Dolores Lefevre (born in TX on 7/4/1889).

I'm assuming that there was a marriage, but the lack of information about Ray's parents could be explained by an out-of-wedlock birth.

Any information will be appreciated.

Looking for Steve Chickering who is related to Nathan Chickering

Nathan Chickering
Author: Steve Chickering Date: 4 Oct 2001 1:34 AM GMT
Classification: Query
Post Reply | Mark Unread Report Abuse Print Message
I have not yet spent the time to learn to navigate around this message board, but for now I hope to help answer a question I saw concerning Nathan.
Nathan is actually Oliver's son. Nathan's birth name is Nathaniel (which is also Nathan's son's name just to confuse things a little more). Nathan was born in Rutland in 1775, he died Jan 22, 1853 in Barre and is buried with his father (Oliver) in Rutland. Oliver is my 6th great grandfather.
Nathan had a son named Nathaniel Kimball, who had a son named Otis Nathaniel who had a son named Anelious Oren
and so on until I fall into the picture.
I have copies of certificates and spouse info on everyone back to Oliver. I was also amazed at how many brothers and sisters there were in some of these families.
Most of my info comes from hours at the Rutland, Mass town hall, the Mormon record archeives in Worcester, MA and various trips to Rutland and Dover (you really ought to see Dover, I sat with an Emily Chickering Birchie, who actually had letters in her possesion that were received from the FIRST Nathaniel Chickering, from his mother after he came Dedham from Wrentham, England). ANYWAY feel free to contact me and I will try to figure out how to use this board in the meantime (sdcsub1@aol.com)
Respectfully,
Steve Chickering
I tryed the email address and it is not a know member so i am hoping that I will find him on here.
Jodie Chapdelaine
Re: Panio History

Dear Levi,
I live in Winterset, Iowa and my grandfather was Herbert Chickering (wife was Maude Goultry Chickering).
While in Omaha back in the 80's I came across a piano store with a sign listed as selling Chickering piano's. I picked up a booklet at the store, and have it today in my Chickering Geneology book, describing the history of the Chickering piano. If you email me your address I will take a copy of it and mail it to you.
In short, as best as I can remember, the Chickering piano was "invented" by Jonas Chickering in 1737 in Boston. He came up with a design to use a metal bracket in the piano which held the tension on each of the tensioned wires which gave each key its tone. By using metal rather than a wood bracket, which all pianos were made with during the time, the piano held its tune since the wood brackets wood warp with time and thus have to be frequently re-tuned. He owned a fleet of ships and would ship goods from Boston down to Brazil where he picked up a special wood in Brazil (teak?) which he brought back to incorporate into the piano. At one time, his piano building in Boston was the second largest building in the United States. Only the U.S. Capitol Building was larger.
Anyway, I will be happy to mail you further info if you give me your address. My wife and I are currently in the New England area viewing the foliage and will return via Boston to Winterset, Iowa late this week. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Gary R. Chickering

I believe I am descended from Simon, but haven't been able to find a direct link. My Great Grandfather was Arthur Chickering of Walpole/Keene New Hampshire. His wife was Bessie Crain. Arthur and Bessie had about 10 kids, one of which was my Grandfather George Henry Chickering I see that there are some Arthur's traced to Simon, but none seem to be my Arthur. Any help would be appreciated.

If you can ever get to the Dover Historical Society there are numerous pictures of the Chickering ancestors on the walls along with a number of other articles. And lots of great information. The nearby cemetry is also filled with many Chickering headstones. I'm glad to see you have made so much progress! Hope you also have a great autumn and please let me know if I can be of any further help. Suzanne

Dear Jeff,

In reply to your inquiry.........due to your last name being Chickering I would start with your father. I would try to find out his place of birth then send for a birth certificate as this should tell you his parents names. Or if he is deceased you could start by writing to the town or city where he died and getting his death certificate which should tell you his parents names and place of birth. Your parents marriage certificate should also give you names and places. The US Federal Census for the different years are also a great source of information giving husband, wife and any children living at the time plus much more information. If I can be of any further help please let me know. Good luck in your search. Arline

Delilah's husband Peter Fessenden was a cousin on my Yankee mom's side. Their son James Otis Fessenden joined the Union army and was killed at the battle of New Bern in NC. In the same battle, on the same day, a cousin on my Rebel dad's side lost an arm. I will always wonder if........ well, you know.
Delilah and Peter also had a son William, who married Louisa Curtis and had a son Roy. I have Roy's picture. Email me if you'd like a copy.
I also have a Silas Chickering in my tree, married to my aunt Ann Champney in 1834. Silas is said to have been born in NY, and Silas & Ann's children appear to have been born in NY. Is Silas from the same Chickering family?
