Hello
My name is Paul Labrum. Presently living in CT. I was born and raised in Troy (Melrose). My greatgrandfather (my father's mother's father) was Jean Baptiste M. Chicoine:
born 12 Sep 1859 in Trois-Rivieres (Three Rivers) Quebec.
naturalized 1888.
lived and died in Troy, NY 15-Jan-1929.
His grandchildren were all born around the same time as your father and his siblings.
His father was also Jean Baptiste; born in 1836 in Trois-Rivieres (Three Rivers) Quebec
Unfortunately I don't have any info about his siblings. Perhaps a brother of his may be the Piere (Peter) you are looking for.

If you have any further info, I'd appreciate it.
Regards

They were Children of Gedeon Chicoine m. Clara Gendreau.
I notice that the Lena you have mentioned has different parents...& that you have a "Martin" in your tree as well? Hmm interesting... Gedeon's parents were Pierre Chicoine m. Sophie Martin
July, my grandfather was Joseph Alfred Chicoine. I believe one of his sisters was Angelina (Lena).
They came from Sorel which is just south of Montreal on the St Lawrence. Father was Joseph Chicoine & mother Eliza Martin. I have cousins whose father was Walter Kniskern.
I would be happy to share what I have found so far.

Alfred J Chicoine Jr

I don't believe we are talking about the same Lena Chicoine. My great grandmother Lena married Arthur Kniskern somewhere ar ound 1900 or so. I have extensive info on the Kniskern family, but very little on Lena Chicoine. She came down from Montreal from one of the indian reservations. Her parents were Alfred Chicoine and Eliza Martin - I have no records past that.

Obituary - Anita Marie Bjarko, February 9, 1919 - June 14, 2007

The Oregonian, p. C4, Tuesday, June 19, 2007, Portland, Oregon

Anita Bjarko was born in Scobey, Montana, on February 9, 1919. She was the younger of two daughters born to Scobey pioneers Emma and Charles Chicoine, who owned farmland outside of Scobey. She loved living on the farm where she developed a lifelong love of animals.

Anita attended grade school in a one-room country schoolhouse and graduated from Scobey High School. She married Erling, in March 1940, and the two of them left Scobey for the open road while Erling sold The Farm Journal in North Dakota, Idaho and Oregon. They settled in Portland, Oregon in 1942, where they stayed until Erling entered the Army in 1944. Anita then moved to Los Angeles where she lived with her sister, Rita, and worked until her husband was discharged from the service. In 1946 they returned to Portland where they remained together until Erling died in July 2001.

Anita loved being a mom to her two daughters and always enjoyed having her girls and their friends around. She was a stay-at-home mom who had many activities to keep her busy. She volunteered at All Saints where her children went to school; she was a Red Cross volunteer for many years; and she belonged to both a pinochle club and a bowling league for several decades.

She also loved animals, and even when she didn't have one of her own to care for, she always had food and kindness on hand for any stray that came along.

Her most recent joy was being around her two-year-old great-granddaughter, Allison. She adored her.

Anita was preceded in death by her husband, Erling, her parents, Emma and Charles Chicoine, and her sister, Rita Chicoine. She is survived by her daugher and son-in-law, Lonna and Robert Liddell; her daughter, Laurel Bjarko; her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Alesha and Edward Buturla; her great-granddaugher, Allison Anita; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at All SaInts Catholic Church, 3847 NE Glisan St. in Portland.

Remembrances may be made to the Oregon Humane Society.

Note: I have no connection, I am just transcribing from the newspaper. A picture accompanied the article but I have no means to copy it, contact the newspaper if you wish to get it.

Re: Looking for Jack Chicoine

Hello Therese,
You responded to a post made by my sister in regards to my search for my birth father, Jack Chicoine. The information that you posted here gave me goosebumps as I have written hundreds of letters over the past 13 years to Chicoine's both in Canada and the US. I have met many lovely people but have crashed into one dead end after another. I even contacted both the Cdn. and US Armed Forces and came up dry. Let me give you the information that I have. According to my adoption papers Jack Chicoine was about 25 in 1955. I was born in the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta on Nov. 30, 1955. My birth mother was Annie Guckert who was 27 at the time of my birth. Jack is described as 5'9 and 185 pounds with dark hair and dark eyes. He liked football and boxing. He did office work for the US Air Force. He completed grade 12, was Roman Catholic and was of French American origin. He was born in Montana but I checked with Vital Statistics and found no record. It is also stated that his father was a garage owner in Great Falls but my sister and I scoured the records there and found nothing. Also it says that in 1955 Jack had 1 married sister.
My name at birth was Debra Frances Guckert. You responded to a post by my sister who 2 years after I was given up for adoption, was given the same name. My name now is Heidi Kirschner and I live in Kelowna, BC. You can email me at:
heidi_kirschner@hotmail.com or call me at 250-765-7638. We are currently trying to find your phone number as well although we are not sure if you live in Canada or the US. I am guessing from your post that you are in the US.
I hope that I will hear from you soon.

Hi,
There are some things similar and others I'm not sure. My dad's name is John "Jack" Chicoine. In 1955 he was about 23 years old and he served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed for a time in Alaska. I don't know if he was ever in Canada. I know his family did come from there.

I’m looking for any information on my gr-gr-grandparents Adelaide Remey dit Bellefleur and Jean Henri Chicoine and there children. They were married February 06, 1826 in St. Hilaire, Rouville, Quebec. They had at least three children to my knowledge, Clarice Chicoine my great grandmother a brother Louis and a sister Adélaïde. Parts of this family immigrated to Massachusetts early 1900’s Birth death and places would be a great help!

Emile Belisle
Emile3@cox.net
Karnes,

I asked Paul about that info..particularly Alfred's parents. He had them listed as Andre and Emelie Gareau...I asked where the Chicoine name came from, and he replied that he had confused my Alfred with another..I know the marriage data is correct, Paul sent me a copy of the record, but i am still unclear as to who his parents are..I've picked away a bit at the Mormon website and haven't come up with anything yet...
Edmond Chicoine sent me an email about some info he had, looking to fit in Lena (Alfred and Elise's daughter).....I've pasted it here in quotes so you can see it.....I do have a record that has Alfred's first name as Joseph, but I've been told that is a common thing for Canadien boys to have Joseph as a first name, but go by their middle name...''''Now as for "Lena"...you already mentioned in your reply to me that "your" Lena has different parents than Lena B. Chicoine daughter of Gedeon Chicoine & Clara (Gendreau).
They may very well be related and I was very interested in the "MARTIN" surname of your Lena's mother...
If you search under Pierre Victorien Chicoine his second wife was Sophie MARTIN and together were Gedeons parents....I urge you to look at my information that I have posted on Ancestry.com as a start...so we get on the same page per se!
The "MARTIN" girls in question may very well have been sisters!! and that surname has been a problem to trace. I can tell you that Gedeon and his brother Pierre married sisters Clara & Josephine Gendreau...
And also note that Pierre Victorien Chicoine's first marriage was to I believe "Victoire L'Hemereaux" and perhaps your Alfred is their son??? """"

Does any of this info fit in with yours?
julie

Hi Kames.
Interesting indeed. In the case of the children, ie 11 children in one case, were you able to find the children's names on line?

In an earlier post Julie asked about the origin of the Chicoine Family. The original spelling was Chicoisne. It appears Pierre lost the "s" on his way over to New France.
Pierre was born in Channy-sur-Lathan France which is near Anjou. The family is also found in Laurent-de-Lin.
There are a few spellings of the name in France, Chicoisne and Chicouane for example.
In the New World even more spellings: Chicoyne, Chicoine, Shequine.
First ,mention for Pierre in New France is 1663 as a corporal in a local militia. He is recorded as the 879th resident of Montreal.
There is another issue concerning "dit" names which help to cloud the research. In New France is was not uncommon for an individual to take a dit name. It was a way to differentiate (sp) oneself from the rest since so many had such similar names. One of Pierre's sons (Paul) took the dit name Dozois. In his case his children would have Dozois as the last name. According to my stated source (v.4) there are 3930 individuals listed, 3520 Chicoine and 410 Dozois.
Pierre's other son, Francois, took the dit name "Lafresniere"
This is a different Francois from the one you and Julie have listed.
It can get confusing.

Thanks Paul..I went briefly on their website....what great stuff!!! Actually, if it isn't too much trouble, I'd love some of your stuff. I'm especially interested in the marriage of Alfred Chicoine and Elize Martin in Contrecoeur...Do you have any documents? I checked out the place online..It turns out to be a pretty small town on the St.Lawrence near Montreal..I'm interested because I've hit a stonewall with Elize...Family rumor is she was Iroquois indian (name doesn't sound too Indian to me) That particular town has a bit of Iroquois history to it....I found a listing of two Cathloic churches there, so I'm guessing it had to have been one of them....Since I live not too far away I'm contemplating a trip up there...Don't know how far I'll get since I don't speak a word of French, but I don't know where else to look...I can't seem to find out where they went afterward..but they stayed in Canada, since my greatgrandmother lists Quebec as a birthplace, but I've heard she had 12 or so bros and sis....Can't find any!!! Anyway, what I'm looking for is anything to start with or any tips on where to look if I go up there (town hall....Church records??) Would they even want to have anything to do with me???

Hi
LDS is Latter Day Saints or Mormons. Family history is a central concern to their beliefs. As a result the LDS maintain first rate research facilities. The software they provide, PAF or Personal Ancestry File, for next to no cost or most times at no cost is first rate.
I suggest you also contact your local library.

If the above doesn't work out I have about 30 minutes work to scan the charts you need. No sweat, its up to you
Thanks again Paul..I'm writing from Worcester, Massachusetts...I don't know where I could get a copy of that source...I'm sorry, but what is an LDS family center? I would very much appreciate copies of anything you had, but I'm sure that is alot of work to scan them in and such. Please don't feel that you have to. i don't mind locating them myself, I'm just not sure where to look!

Your welcome.
There is alot more available. When I mentioned, for example, 9 children, that is to say those names are available. Often with date of birth, death, spouce.

If you can locate a copy of the listed source it would take you a couple days to copy out the information. There is a copy available at the Laval library. I am unsure where you are writing from. The LDS's family centers are a good resource.

If you wish I can scan my documents and email them to you.

About Alfred? As it turns out my grandfather had a brother named Alfred. Not the same Alfred as yours but the name did catch my attention.

Regards
Paul C.

Hello,

All I have is Lena Chicoine born around 1887 in Canada.
Possible Quebec. Died in Worcester, Mass. She was buried on February 17th 1966 in Notre Dame Cemetary. Her mother I am told is Elisa M. Martin who was a orphan on an Indian Reservation. That is all I know I am afraid. Does any of this sound familiar?
Kathleen
Thanks for your reply.

I am a very distant cousin also, here's how I fit in:

Karnes Neill
son of

Marsha Stagg(Sundby-adopted by Karnes Sundby) (b:1942, Montana) and John Neill (m: 1963)
daughter of

Margaret Chicoine (b:1916, Montana, USA) and Orville Stagg
daughter of

Arthur Albert Chicoine (b: 1888 Adamsville, Brome, Quebec; d: 1970, Scobey, Daniels Co., Montana, USA) and Pearl Ida Gilchrist - they had 5 daughters
son of

Norbert Chicoine (b: 1853, St. Pie, Quebec) and Eugenie Euphemie Auger (m: 1875, St. Pie, Quebe) - they had (I believe) 8 children at least 2 died in infancy.
son of

Jean Louis Chicoine (b: 1825 St. Hyacinthe, Quebec) and Appolline Racicot (m: 1850, St. Pie, Quebec) - they had 11 children.
Jean Louis Chicoine remarried Esther DeSautels in 1896
son of

Francois Chicoine (b: 1788, St. Hyacinthe, Quebec) and Isabelle Daignault - they had 11 children.
son of

Joseph Chicoine (b: 1747, Vercheres, Quebec) and Marguerite Lussier - they had 8 children
son of

Francois Chicoine (b: 1713, Vercheres, Quebec) and (Marie) Francoise Dansereau - thus the linkage. Joseph was their 5th child and 4th son and was brother of the Pierre (b: 1739) who you mentioned in your message .

I found much of my information on the LDS (familysearch.org) website. Searchin the IGI and Pedigree databases.

Interesting the many descendents of Pierre Chicoine (1st generation in New France). Very extensive family.

Karnes

Paul,

I have discovered a technique of searching the Family Search website to uncover children of a couple. Particularily in the IGI and Pedigree online databases. If you go to the www.familysearch.org website, and click on "Search for Ancestors" link, you will see a search entry form. on the left side of the page are links to individual databases (the standard is to search "All" databases). Go to the IGI database. A similar looking entry form is presented. I fill in the "Father" and "Mother" sections (not the ancestor name). You will then have to choose a "Region", and you can then choose a "Province", etc. I usually put in a date range that encompasses the time frame I am looking for, but you don't necessarily have to. By searching this way, only those children with the parents you enter will be displayed. I will say that sometimes, several entries of one child's name will appear, and it can get pretty confusing. I'm not sure why there are multiple entries for individuals in the IGI, but I have been able to sort through most of it and come up with a list and number of children for these parents. The IGI database is not finished and new entries are constantly being added to the website. The Pedigree database can be searched similarily. This database contains information submitted by individuals researching particular family names, and does not always have all children or may not be entirely correct. I have foudn that in combination with the IGI, I can get good leads on names of my ancestory.

Hope that helps a little.

I have a couple of historical papers on the Chicoine's (Pierre the 1st of Quebec), and they discuss the Dozois and Chicoine connections. But any other information is appreciated.

Good luck,

Karnes
