I appreciate your goal of only posting sound information taken from reliable and verifiable sources. I have been led down many confused and confusing paths while tracing my Sutton and Cox families which married into (though predating) my Chilcote line back in the 1600's in early America. A lot of mistakes are posted in an irresponsible manner.

Concerning the Chilcotes/cotts/coats/cots have you studied the "Visitations" of Devon, Somerset or Cornwall of the mid 1500's to the 1623? These 'official' records list John b. 1608 as the son of George Chilcott and Frances Arscott/Arscot. Further Frances is listed as the daughter of John Arscott/Arscot of Dunsland and Marie (or Mary) Monk/Monck/Monke. Marie is listed as the daughter of Thomas Monk/Monck/Moncke of Powderidge Devon and Frances Plantagenet. Frances P. is listed as the daughter of Viscount and Viscountess of Lisle, Arthur Plantagenet and Elizabeth Grey. Both these two are descendants of royalty with both sharing William the Conqueror as an ancestor, as well as Charlemagne, Charles Martel and others. Arthur is the last male member of the Plantagenet line and the Uncle of Henry VIII...He being the bastard son of King Edward IV.

Well, from what I have read of your ancestery, you are definately from a different Chilcoat branch.

The Richard in my line only had 2 children, a son (my father) and a daughter (my aunt) who had no children.

My great-grandfather was also Richard, so it could have been a branch back that way. Did you know the names of Richards children or siblings?

I do not know if this is of any help, but my maternal grandfather's name is Richard Chilcoat. I do not know much about the maternal side of my family however I am in the/a Chilcoat bloodline. I would be happy to investigate further however.

From the info I read in your post, I think I am your cousin.
My father was Kenneth Chilcoat who was Larry's cousin. My grandfather was Marvin's brother, Richard Chilcoat, son of Richard and Ella Chilcoat.

I have searched and searched for my great grandmother's family. Her name was Sarah E. Chilcoat. I found her in Morgan Co. Mo in 1850 census living with a family last name Self. I don't know if Elizabeth Self was her mother or what. My family have always believed she was part Indian, but this I don't know forsure. There were several Chilcoats living in that area and close by the Self family. I am trying to find who her parents were. Was Elizabeth her mother and married to a Chilcoat - but who? Sarah ended up marrying 2 brothers, William Williams and later, Jasper Williams. They came to Oregon after 1880. Do you know anything about her?

I agree with everything you said. Ancestry.com, to me, is to put your info. out there. That way, if other researchers want to help you, or give you information that you need then they can. I use Ancestry.com to put my information out there, and if some of it is incorrect then these people who read your post should try to help you. They have no right to make you feel bad. Keep researching and use Ancestry.com the way you want to. I have put some of my info. out there without proof, and other nice researchers have come in to help me. Klott52

I would like to know more about this lineage. My great grandfather was Luther Gray Chilcoat and was born around 1890. He lived in Arkansas and Oklahoma and died in Ada Oklahoma around 1970. His son my grandfather was Charles Chilcoat and Charles's son was David Wayne Chilcoat my father. Thanks.

Have heard the rumor for many years, and have even gotten requests for that information. However, I believe it is a rumor. With all of the families that I have in my data base, there isn't anybody that not accounted for.

Just because you may have information that is or isn't more accurate than someone else's doesn't give you the right to be rude and disrespectful. If someone posts something incorrect you should have the decency to email them directly or ask them to email you or to some other way let them know kindly. I, and I am sure they, would be more receptive to your comments if you tried to be polite.

I have every right to post what I want and if someone feels it is incorrect then I appreciate being informed of this in a polite manner so that I may review and possibly find the correct info. And just because YOU don't have a record of something doesn't mean one doesn't exist. So, you should be careful in making that statement.

I wish no further discussion with you. If you wanted to communicate with me, you should have emailed me privately. I certainly hope you will extend that courtesy to the next person you find with potentially incorrect info.

I can't believe that you actually responded. Whether you are a genealogist or not, you just don't put information on your records that are incorrect. Usually people don't respond because they don't have a source to stand on. However I'm glad that you did and are willing to remove the incorrect information.

You can start with whatever you received off the internet or information that was provided to you from the internet. This isn't a good source for your records. Of cource there are somethings that can't be explained or that information just isn't available.

Such as the maiden name of Margaret, John's wife. There is no record that I know of that states her maiden name. There also isn't any record of Robinson's wife Ann maiden name. As far as John being born in Somerset, England is really something since he was born here in the U.S. and his birth is recorded here. John Chilcoat wife Susannah is correct, but we don't know if she was the mother of your ancestor. John was married or had at least two wives that we know of.

First of all, I will begin by saying that I don't appreciate your tone one bit. I am NOT a geneaologist and I have never claimed to be one. I only recently started researching my own family line and this is information that I was provided by someone else.

I didn't just start World War III here and I don't believe I deserve such treatment.

If you have an issue with something that is posted, there are far more polite ways to say so. All of this research done by many people is a work in progress. Sometimes information may be incorrect. But that is precisely WHY we communicate, isn't it!?! These boards and others are about sharing information so that we can all get to the true info and discover our roots together.

I will go back through the info I was provided and will post what I have. If you have other information on my family, I would be very happy to have it. We are all after the same goal here.

I have been in the Chilcote/Chilcoat familiy research for over 35 years and you have information that I haven't been able to find in that time period. Please supply this web site with your findings.

To start with, you have Robinson wife as Amy Ann Heathcote, where did you find the name of Heathcote in a record?

How do you know that John Chilcoat wife Susannah was your ancestor?

Robinson father was John and his mother's name was Margaret, where did you find her maiden name of Robinson?

All of the other information about this John and Margaret and early information that you have supplied is all incorrect and I hope that you haven't passed out this information. As a genealogist you NEVER put information in your records that you have no way of proving. This is the information that you have put in this posting.

Just because you have a blank space in your records in no sign of not doing your job in family research. What is bad, is that putting information on a person and not being able to back that information. I hope that you reconsider your letter with the correct information.

I need some answers that I feel may lie with some of my distant cousins. Floyd Chilcoat and Sarah Dinwiddie Chilcoat were my gg grandparents. Their daughter Frances (Frankie) Banks Chilcoat married Frank Fobair and my grandmother came from that marriage; her name was Susan Elizabeth Fobair. She married John Harold Round and had 8 children, one of whom was my father, Leslie Round. I have searched so long for the answers and keep hitting a brick wall. Sorry I have not seen that spelling. Have found Chilcote and Chilcott but not with a G or J. My brick wall is the name Schmidt who married into the Chilcoat family. All these Chilcoats seen to be in Maryland.

When I researched records in Maryland, I found that once the recording clerk had written Chilcoat as Gilcoat. I had ancestors who were Gilcoats. Any experience with finding that name as a split of?
John Gilcoat paid taxes on considerable property in Wilkes Co. Georgia from 1785 to 1805. His children were later in Jasper and Lafayette Counties in Georgia.
Some were later in Northern Louisiana From there at least one went to Arkansas, Mine went to Texas. We pronounce the name as with a J---Jillcoat. Those in Arkansas (I believe of s definite relationship.) use a soft G or is that a hard G? in pronunciation. They spell it Gillcoatt.

W.A.Chilcoat had a son William 'Oscar' Chilcoat bn 8/4/1890 in Antlers, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. It is my understanding through word of mouth that there was only a few and they were all related.

Richard Chilcote was married to Harriet Parks and they had a daughter I am aware of named Frances Washington Chilcote (2/22/1846 to 10/15/1919). Frances married Basil Shriver Smith and they had a number of children, one of whom was Joseph Smith who married Anna Lillian Emmons. Their daughter, Frances Katherine Smith, was born in Hyattsville, Maryland and she was my grandmother. Most of the family is in the Riverdale/Hyattsville area. Would like to hear from you!

When people can't spell their name and it is up to the person writing the instrument, it is their version of how the name should be spelled. However it doesn't always happen that way. I have brothers who have spelled their name different. This has happen in the last 50 years. I have a document from Mississippi that has the last name spelled many different ways. I guess he or she was just covering you now what.

I don't know the area of Wales or how it is related to England.

You are correct in the names of your grandfather and great grandfather. As far as Wales is concerned, I believe that this is the first time I have heard that. I have the information on this family. just tell me what you want and I will sent it to you.

His Father was Absalom Benton Chilcoat

Does any one have any more information .

We all came from Wales and our fathers ancestors
settled in what is now Baltimore with land grants.

My fathers name is Arvol Boyd Chilcoat. His father is Arthur Boyd Chilcoat and Mother is Teenie Mae York Chilcoat. Arthur's Father is John Milton Chilcoat and his Mother is Ada Annie Chilcoat (thanks for the Brewer name). John Milton's Father is John Pinkney Chilcoat and his Mother is Sarah Ann Spillers. I have your father name spelled Orville Boyd Chilcoat? He was born 25 Sep 1925 Wewoka, Ok. His grandparent were Arthur Boyd and Tennie Mae York Chilcoat. His great grandparents were John Milton and Ada R. Brewer Chilcoat. The great-great grand parents were John Pinkney and Sarah Spillers Chilcoat. I have more.
