I hadn't checked the messages for a long time. I am so thrilled to get all this information about Harrison. I am descendeed from Harrison's youngest child Mach Andrew Childress. Mach moved his wife Sarah Ann Pogue and children Viola, Myrtle, and Lester to Creek Co. Oklahoma in 1901. I believe there were infants Willie and ?? buried in Moniteau.
Does anyone have any idea what Harrison's wife's maiden name was?
Jean Childress Tilbury

Hi,

Your great grandmother, Blanche Travis Rodgers Lansinger, was my Grandmother's sister. My Mother was Anna Blanche, and her Mother was Lucille Valdis. My sister remembers as a very young child going to vist Great Grandma Grubbs, in El Paso, TX in 1951. I would imagine they visited your Grandmother and GreatGrandmother as well.

Would love to have more information about my Grandmother's side of the family. Thanks to this post we are also in contact with my Mother's Father's side of the family. My Mother never knew her Father, as Lucille divorced James Childress when my Mother was around 8 or so. My Mother passed away in 1998. He half sister, Mary Jane, passed away in 2005.

Hi,

I feel sad too that she never got to know her Dad or you. He was always a mystery to her and to us. The one sad memory she talked about was walking to the bus station with him the day he left. He told her none of this was her fault. She really hung on to that last memory of him. When we asked my Grandmother about him she was kind of vague. She did say she thought he a a Brother or two and they were all named after authors. Is that true?

We would love to know more about all of you and the Childress side of the family. I always imagined my Mother looked like her Father because she didn't look anything like her Mother, Lucille. My Mother was VERY intelligent, close to a genius IQ. She was a real estate broker and had her own real estate office in the late 50's and early 60's in Northern California. She was good at it and worked very hard.

My sister and I are so excited to know more about the Childress side of the family. It will be like finally solving a mystery in our lives. I hope you will send us your name and a way to get in contact with you.

The only reason my mother gave was that he said, "There's too much water under the bridge." He was a different sort of person, much a loner. We grew up with Anna Blanche in our lives; our mother talked about her to us, what little she knew, & we always wished we could know her. I woke up this morning feeling so sad about her never knowing her dad or us, & my brother never knowing that we found you. We have another sister, 7 years older than me, but she's like our dad. I will get some things together & send them, okay? Thanks for replying, I just wish we'd found your mom in time to know her. In the one picture my dad had of her (4years old) she looked like our dad & sister.

Hello! This is all very exciting! My Mother always hoped she would find her Father or hear from him. She would have loved knowing she had siblings. She did have several step borthers and sisters and one half sister that she was very close to.

The ad you say he kept in his wallet was the one she sent out looking for him? Wonder why he didn't respond, especially if he knew she wanted to find him? My sister and I would love pictures and info about our Grandfather, and about you and your brother.
Hi, I'm so excited to hear from you. I actually found a lot about your mother after your Aunt Blanche's granddaughter contacted me. I even found you & your sister's info, but I've been reluctant to contact you lest you had no interest in hearing from me. I have been so sad since finding that I missed Anna Blanche by a few years. My Dad actually cut her ad from a paper & carried it in his wallet until he died in 1953. I didn't know about it until long after he was gone, & my mother didn't keep the clipping, or remember details by then. My brother (who passed away last April) & I have wanted so much to find her & let her know, but all my mother knew was "around LA & went by step-father's name". I've been looking for years, but not enough clues. If you would like pictures or info about her Dad (your grandfather), let me know.

My Mother was Anna Blanche Childress (Audet). Her Mother was Lucille Valdis Rodgers/Sears (Childress, Stewart, Penrose). My mother never saw her Father after the age of 8, so we never knew any of the Childress side of the family or anything about him. My Mother was named after her Mother's sister, Blanche. My Mother was born in El Paso, TX, August 7, 1917. My mother passed away in 1998 at the age of 79, in Yuba City, CA.

Anna went by the name of her step-father, which was Stewart. Lucille had one daughter with Mr. Stewart, Mary Jane, who was Anna's half-sister. After Mr. Stewart died, Lucille Married Edward Penrose.

After Anna married, she tried looking for her Father, James Childress. She always wondered what happened to him and if she had any step brothers and sisters out there somewhere. She had no luck at that time (mid-1940's) in finding him.

Denise,
I have a lot of info about Harrison. There is another cousin who lives about 30 min. from here, and we are getting together in a couple of weeks. She published a book on Harrison's siblings. She is a descendant of one of Harrison's siblings. I am going to do an updated family record sheet for Harrison, and I will send you one.

I hope that your foot is doing better. Mom told me that you had surgery. Since you couldn't get around too well, I sure you had a little more time to devote to doing this research. My interest was renewed when I was trying to organize some old files. I thought I would join Ancestry to see if it would help me.

Keep in touch.

I am curious about you since your mother's maiden name is Childress from Moniteau Co., MO. We must be related because most of my dad's relatives live in Moniteau Co. I am thinking you are one of the cousins. So do you go to the Childress-Martin family reunion in August? Are you Denise?

Yes, that tombstone you are talking about is that of Harrison Childress. Many of his family are buried near that tombstone. The sad part about the tombstone is that it was severely damaged during one of those bad storms we had last spring/summer. A tree limb fell on it and broke it in two pieces. When I went to visit the gravesite in August, there was nothing left of the tombstone but the small base. Now no one would know who was buried there. We have never found a tombstone for his wife, Nancy, but she must be buried there. Also, there eldest son is buried there too, but have never found any tombstone. Some of those tombstones at Mt. Zion Cemetery are very old, and it is very difficult to read what is written on them.

Please get back to me.

Sharon

My mother's maiden name is Childress and we live in Moniteau County, MO. There is a grave stone, believed to be the oldest in the Mt. Zion Cemetery outside of Jamestown MO, that says "Childress" Born in Stokes Co., N.C., March 17, 1798, died Sept. 17, 1876" No one here seems to know anything about this man's first name, but I believe now he must be Harrison Childress. The part of the tombstone which would have given his first name is broken off. I would be interested in knowing where his wife is buried and will need to do some checking. Don't know about his parents or wife's name, but would love to find out.

I find it interesting that the following individuals are all listed on the same page in Dekalb Aalabama in 1840.

Sarah Bruce
Margt Cilders
Memply Bruce (I think this is Murphy)

I believe that Sarah Bruce is the mother of Murphy Bruce and that Margt Cilder is really Margaret Childress, wife of ayers Childress. My 3G grand mother states in the Giuon miller app that her father Ayers Childress went with the indians to oklahoma and was gone for some time and then came back so I think that he was gone during the time the census was taken and that is why Margaret is listed as head of house. My 3G grandmother was borm in dekalb alabama in 1832.
I am also trying to find a connection to this line of Childress. Do you have any information on Joels parents or siblings? Most people seem to think he was descended from John Childress and martha calhoun. But there is a letter from Sarah childress Polk saying that her sister Susan was named after Joels mother. My family stories say my 4 G grandfather was a cousin of sarah childress polk, but I can find no real information to support it.

I have not been able to prove a conection between my Ayers Childress and Sarah Childress Polk but I am still trying. I believe Ayers Childress was probably a nephew of Sarahs father Joel childress, but can find no reliable sources on siblings of joel childress. Murphy Bruce's sister Margaret was the wife of Ayers childress.

Re: Anna Blanche Childress

Anna Blanche is niece to my great grandmother Blanche Travis Rodgers Lansinger. With the help of what my grandmother can remember, I have been researching her (my grandmother's) family for a couple of years now. We know Anna Blanche's mother as Lucille (search for Lucille Childress--1920 and 1910 Census) or Valice (search for Valice Badger--1900 Census) or Valdis L (search for Valdis L Stewart--1930 Census), not Louise. Lucille then married a Penrose. Search death index Yuba California 3 Apr 1982 Lucile Stewart Penrose.

According to my grandmother, Valdis and Blanche's parents were a Mary E Roberts born abt 1872 and a Robert Rodgers (she has it spelled with a d). Robert Rodgers died of consumption? (family legend) must have been sometime between Blanche's birth (1892) and Mary E's marriage to Horace W Sears in 1895 (I found marriage certificate in search on ancestry; Rodgers is spelled Roggers). Mary E then went on to marry a Thomas Grubbs.

Am still searching for info on Mary E and Robert Rodgers....
