The following information is from Elizabeth Pearson White's [EPW] book "John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 3: The First Five Generations Documented Descendants Through his third child Hope Howland, Wife of John Chipman" published by Picton Press, 2008.

p. 150-155: Stephen Chipman's (b abt 1733 Smithtown, Long Island) parents were James Chipman, the son of John and Mary (Skiffe), and Mary Minor, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Saxon). His siblings were James (b 10 Aug 1719 Groton, Conn.), Mary (b 11 Jun 1722 Groton), Deborah (b 17 Jul 1724 Stoningham), Perez (b abt 1727 New London), John (b abt 1729 New London), and Benjamin (b abt 1731 Smithtown, Long Island, N.Y.)

Note that this information differs from John Hale Chipman III's [JHC] compilation "A Chipman Genealogy circa 1583-1969" published by Chipman historics, 1970. In that reference on p. 19 only the following children are listed: James (b 10 Aug 1719), Mary (b 11 Jun 1722), and Deborah (b 17 Jul 1724). Additionally, JHC's book links Stephen, the husband of Agnes, to Perez Chipman.

I am working on this Chipman's line for my wife. Familysearch and ancestry.com has all the info. Can anyone email me the gedcom. This cut-and-pasting ancestor by ancestor is tedious. I need the whole family line. So does anyone have JANET (NIELSON) HANSEN b. 6 December 1921, Spanish Fork, Utah, Utah, United States gedcom upline? Or at least STEPHEN CHIPMAN on up? It will save me a bunch of cut and pasting!

email: ednoonan7@gmail.com

Janice, thank you very much. Especially for monitoring this old thread and being willing to respond with your research.

I am hoping to link Amos Chipman (1751-1831) to possibly his father Amos ( b. 1727) and then to Thomas Chipman (1687-1752) for obvious reasons.

If you, or anyone, can verify this information, I will be forever grateful for the insight as I continue to do my own research.

Yes. Amos Chipman (1751-1831) and Abigail Boardman (1755-1821) had 11 children. Child number 10 is Hiram Chipman: born 06 May 1797 Sunderland, Bennington, VT; died 08 Sep 1837 Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI; married in about 1820 to Sarah Doyle. In my records next to his name I have written: Probate Record 15 Nov 1838 - I didn't copy this record as HC is not in my direct line. Hope this helps - good luck - Janice

Re: Jerusha Chipman

Ken,

Your post is an excellent synopsis of the state of my research with respect to Jerusha Chipman. It is apparent she was not the daughter of Stephen Chipman and Mary Griffin, which is commonly asserted. In addition to the points you make, Mary Pearson White (in the book you referenced) indicates that bequests (or the lack thereof) in his father John's will "prove" that Stephen did not have any children.

The fact that Jerusha named a son James Chipman Griffin has led some (myself included) to speculate that her first husband may have been named James Chipman. But the only likely "James Chipman" candidate we know of was married to another woman and alive at the time of Jerusha's marriage to Thomas Griffin.

So your conclusion is correct - we are still trying to determine just who Jerusha Chipman was. Thanks very much for your post.

Mason Blake

Re: Jerusha Chipman

Greetings,

Don't know if this shines any light on the Jerusha issue but it is what I have in various books concerning Stephen Chipman (b. 9 Jun 1708 Sandwich, Mass., d. bef. 7 Oct 1749 West Indies), son of John Chipman and Mary Skiffe.

Looking at the article "A Chipman Family History" by Handley Chipman (1717-1799) of Newport, R. I., and Cornwallis, Nova Scotia as contributed by Mrs. Arthur James Tretheway, Litt.D., of Boston, Mass. the following was recorded by Handley:

"Just about a year after my dear Mothers Death, my dear father married the Said widow Case at Newport on Said Rhode Island. She had had two husbands, one a Griffin, the other said Capt. Case. by said Griffin She had a daughter who lived to grow up and Married my Said dear fathers Son Stephen, who died in Said West Indies Leaving no Child. My Mother in Law's maiden name was Mary Hoockey, and after my dear father had Lived with her 19 years She died also with the Consumption Leaving no Child by my dear father."

Two things to note:
1. The father referenced above is John Chipman (b. 3 Mar 1669/70 Barnstable, Mass., d. bef. 4 Jan 1756 Newport, R.I.)
2. Per the article, '... no attempts have been made in this article to correct any erroneous statements of the author of the "History."'

Now, according to the book "John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 3, The First Five Generations. Documented Descendants Through his third child Hope Howland, Wife of John Chipman" by Elizabeth Pearson White Stephen [EPW] married Mary Griffin, the daughter of Thomas Griffin.

With Stephen Chipman and Mary Griffin documented not having any children, those with Jerusha as their daughter are most likely incorrect or misinformed.

Several trees mention the possibility that Jerusha married James Chipman, son of above James Chipman (son of John Chipman and Mary Skiffe) and Mary Minor. However in EPW's book [p. 511] James is documented as having married Elizabeth Razor in Jun 1744. James, based on the date of probate of his will, died before 8 May 1757. This will was written on 17 Dec 1573. This indicates that he was alive at the time of the Jerusha Chipman marriage to Thomas Griffin in 1753. So I think that connection can be ruled out.

Does all this help answer who Jerusha was? Not really but I think it can rule out who she wasn't.

Ken McKinlay

Jerusha Chipman

Jerusha Chipman. Seeking information concerning Jerusha (_________?) Chipman. She was born about 1730 (perhaps in Stonington, Connecticut) and died 2 March 1813 in Brookfield, Madison County, New York. Jerusha married Thomas Griffin 20 September 1753 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut.

There in uncertainty concerning Jerusha’s surname. In one version of the Stonington church records she is listed at the time of her marriage to Thomas Griffin as “Mrs. Jerusha Chipman”, which indicates she was the window of ______________ Chipman at the time of her marriage to Thomas Griffin. On the other hand, many family researchers list Jerusha as the daughter of Stephen Chipman of Sandwich, Barnstable, Mass (b. 9 June 1708, d. Nevis, West Indies 27 April 1735), but without any credible source or proof cited.

Jerusha and Thomas Griffin had the following children:

(a)	Anne Griffin b. 22 Oct. 1755
(b)	Mary Griffin b. 18 May 1758, d. 8 Aug. 1848
(c)	James Chipman Griffin b. 28 Oct. 1760
(d)	Deborah Griffin 6 Oct. 1763
(e)	Thomas Griffin, Jr. b. 12 Oct. 1766

Dear Colleen:

My husband and I just returned from Nova Scotia where we made a sentimental visit to the old home at chipman Corner just outside Kentville NS.

I have your note dated Nov. 10, 2008 given to me by Elsie Atkins Irvine whose mother was Della Chipman Atkins. Elsie traces her parentage to the 2nd marriage of William Henry Chipman who married Mary Dickey and fathered 9 children then married Eliza Ann Chipman and fathered ten more. My maternal grandmother was Annie Chipman Howe. Her father was John Ross who married Sara Elizabeth Starr. Annie's grandfather was William Henry Chipman. Our line as yours does goes back to Hope Howland who married John Chipman. I b ought last year Vol. 3, John Howland and the Mayflower by Eliz. Pearson White.

I have your note from Elsie. She no longer has a computer - her eyesight is quite poor. She hoped I coul,d follow this note up - and I'd love to talk to you further. I bought a couple of Chipman booiks b ut was never able to identify/find the John Hale Chipman III geneaology.

Do E-mail, me. I have some family history but I think you may have a more complete one and would love to know more.

Sincerely,

Jean MacDonald
408 782 9879
macdjean@charter.net

ps I was unable to E-mail you but found you on the Web. Please give my condolences to your family...

I just found an original 1904 copy of 'The Chipman's In America' and bought it on-line. It's in rough shape but supposedly intact - I should get it sometime next week and if I find anything new about our family line I will let you know. I also found some books written by and about some more of our ancestors and can't wait to read them. One was written during the revolutionary war and the others are about Nathaniel Chipman and the civil war.

I'm trying to trace Levi Chipman back past 1804. Or even to 1804.

I have a Levi Chipman Jr born 1844, and a Levi Chipman Sr born 1804. Before that...I don't know? Most people's information seems to rely upon the Chipman books which professional genealogists say are flawed.

There is a Levi Chipman born in Johnstown, Leeds, Ontario, Canada in 1798. His paternal line before him is Amni, Amos, Thomas, Samuel Deacon, John (Who married Hope Howland), and Thomas.

Did the Chipmans of Delaware live in Canada at one point? Is that possible?

I am curious about the Chipman family of Delaware.

Looking at Levi Walcott Chipman (Junior?) June 22 1844 IIRC.

Why would he not give his city, even when asked again in his old age?

Is there any proof of his birth out there? I have a Levi Chipman Senior as his father. Delilah Cook as his mother. Any proof?

What about before Levi Chipman Senior? Is there any connection to the Mayflower family Howland and Tilley? Any proof? Mayflower Society does not accept the books authored by Chipmans.

Thanks.

As you have found, making that leap is the hard part.

Don't restrict yourself to Ancestry for the documentation. Take a look at FamilySearch.org. There just might be the clues needed there. If you can't prove the relationship directly possibly you can prove it via a brother or sister.

Also, just try a simple Google search. There might already be someone out there doing the same work and they may be willing to share what they have found.
Thank you, so much, for taking the time and effort to do all of this. I really appreciate it.

So far I could not find anything linking Benjamin II to Walcott, and no son named Levi. In fact I can't find out who Levi's parents are, through Ancestry. I had them down, I think, from other people's trees, but now I examined it more harshly, I don't see a paper trail.

I wonder if there are other Chipman branches other than the ones that married into the Howland family? They must've all come from Thomas Chipman, though, if I understood what I've read thus far, correctly. But then the things people have are likely based upon those same two Chipman genealogy books which the Mayflower Soc. does not accept.

Levi Walcott Chipman Sr is from Delaware and I read something last night which says Delaware can be very difficult, tracing anyone from those days. He was born in about 1804 if memory serves me.

So the state is right, the last name is right, but no connection? Seems odd to me...The middle name being Walcott, though, does seem to indicate a maternal Walcott line in there somewhere.

Of course, for Mayflower purposes, the trick is to find a paper trail between Levi Sr and a Howland descendant.

Thanks, again, so much for your help. And if yourself or anyone has more tips on the above, please, post. Thank you.

The information I'm providing is based on the book "John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 3. The First Five Generations. Documented Descendants Through his third child Hope Howland, Wife of John Chipman" as compiled by Elizabeth Pearson White and published in October 2008 by Picton Press. I'm including the starting page numbers for each person on the direct line.

Where you went "wrong" is at Gen9. The above book describes how and why the family connection was changed also indicating which document was used as the basis for the statement.

John Howland m. (25 Mar 1623 O.S.) Elizabeth Tilley [p. 17]

Hope Howland (30 Aug 1629-8 Jan 1683) m. (~1646) John Chipman (~1620-7 Apr 1708) [p. 29]

John Chipman (3 Mar 1669/70-4 Jan 1756) m. (~1691) Mary Skiffe (13 Nov 1671-12 Mar 1711) [p. 52]

James Chipman (18 Dec 1694-7 Oct 1749) m. (28 Oct 1717) Mary Minor (31 Jul 1699-?) [p. 151]

Benjamin Chipman (~1731-Bef 23 Jun 1772) m. (~1755) Mary ? (?-Bef 4 Jan 1777) [p. 522]

Benjamin Chipman (3 Jun 1767-?) [p. 524]

It ends with Benjamin Chipman (3 Jan 1767) as the son of Benjamin and Mary Chipman. You will need to find sources acceptable to the Mayflower Society that will allow you to make the connection to his marriage to Sarah Walcott and then to having Levi Walcott Chipman as his son.

Best of luck,
Ken
Hi Ken;

This helps a lot. Thanks so much. I really appreciate the help.

It's Hope who I'd be descended from if it's all true.

The Society didn't mention any of that in their rejection letter. Here is my line as I have it, maybe you could let me know, if you have the book, whether this would go back to James instead?

Gen4 from me would be: Delilah Chipman and husband

Gen5 her parents Levi Walcott Chipman Jr & Maria Elizabeth Swink

Gen6 Levi Walcott Chipman Sr & Delilah Cook

(the marriages up til here are in the state database, and other proofs could come from the census forms)

Then I have 2 Benjamins next.

Gen7 Benjamin Chipman & Sarah Walcott

Gen8 Benjamin Chipman & Mary (?)

Gen9 Perez Chipman & Margaret Wheeler

Gen10 John Chipman & Mary Skiff

Gen 11 John Chipman & Hope Howland

Where did I go wrong?

Thanks so much!!

From my understanding, and others will correct me if I'm wrong, the majority of the books detailing the Chipman line don't have citations/sources for the key details (BMD and parentage). That is why they are not acceptable to the Mayflower Society.

I would recommend that you look at the book "John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 3. The First Five Generations. Documented Descendants Through his third child Hope Howland, Wife of John Chipman" by Elizabeth Pearson White published by Picton Press. This book is available from the Mayflower Society (and no, I'm not in any way associated with them).

The issue I believe you are dealing with is the change from Benjamin being the son of Perez to Benjamin being the son of James. This can be found on p. 522 in the first printing of the aforementioned book. The issue is explained on p. 153 of that same book.

Hopefully this helps and doesn't confuse the issue further.

Ken

I applied to the Mayflower Society and was told that the Chipman genealogy books out there are not accepted, for my line.

I had Benjamin as a son of Perez Chipman, and they said this is not proven.

Does anyone have any info on any of this?

I'd also like to know about Levi Walcott Chipman Jr., since a Chipman genealogy book I found online does not list him as being the son of Senior.

So what's up with the Chipman lines? Thanks for any help.

John Chipman of Pittsylvania Co., VA, and his antecedents

As Handley Chipman, grandson of John and Hope (Howland) Chipman, and son of the Hon. John Chipman, noted in a history of the Chipman family written ca. 1796:

"My Dear and Honored Deceased father John Chipman, married one Capt. Skiffs daughter of said Sandwich, by whom he had 9 children that all Lived to grow up to the years of Men and Women, from whom has sprang a very large offspring. Their names were Sons, James, Perez [sic], John, Ebenezer and Stephen. The Daughters names were Bethia and Mary, twins, as was also the Son Stephen with the next daughter Lidia, the others name was Deborah. They had all entered into the Marriage State and had generally large families of Children. Except said Stephen, who had no Children by his wife, Dying Master of a vessel young in Nevis in the West Indies.... But the Chipmans in America are very Numerous indeed. they are, we are, Sure all related, for they are all of them Descended from my said Grandfather. we find they are Spread even from Canso [a fishing village in Nova Scotia] Eastward to VIRGINIA WESTWARD, if not farther both ways." (See "Genealogies Of Mayflower Families, Vol. 1, Adams - Fuller," pp. 497-513, pub. 1985 by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.)

This is contemporary evidence, drawn from personal knowledge. So who was Handley Chipman talking about? He was talking about John Chipman of Pittsylvania Co., VA.

I'd received a letter dated 23 Mar 2001 from Elizabeth Pearson White who was beginning to work on her article (co-authored with Edwin Wagner Coles) about the Chipmans of DE. As she put it, [I] "have been slowed down trying to untangle the unholy mess of the Chipmans in Delaware."
White & Coles had some NY and DE Chipman material I didn't have, and I had VA Chipman records they didn't have. We didn't exchange information, so the account of James and Mary (Minor) Chipman's son John Chipman was unresolved when their article appeared in 2003. There's actually a lot more information on John Chipman of Pittsylvania Co., VA than there is on the John Chipman who lived in Dorchester Co., MD.

John Chipman of Pittsylvania Co., VA was listed on that county's 1770 tax list. It makes no sense to enter 1200 acres in Halifax Co., VA in the fall of 1766, be appointed Constable of Pittsylvania County on June 26, 1767, then purchase 50 acres in MD on May 9, 1768, return to VA to be taxed in 1770, then sell the same 50 acres in MD in 1771 ( the deed lists him as being of Dorchester Co., MD, not VA), and return again to VA and sign an Oath of Allegiance in 1777. Thus we have two John Chipmans.

It seems clear John Chipman (b. ca. 1728 based on the 1749 Lunenburg Co. tax list) of Pittsylvania Co., VA was the son of James and Mary (Minor) Chipman. Why? The problem is not as difficult as it might appear. We know John Chipman of Pittsylvania Co., VA had to be (for chronological reasons) a great-grandson of John and Hope (Howland) Chipman). He wasn't a remote descendant, so who were his antecedents?
John and Hope had two surviving sons: Samuel and John. Samuel's progeny are well known (at least to that point) and can be eliminated. John (known as Hon. John Chipman for his government service in RI) had four sons by his first marriage. The Pittsylvania John was b. ca. 1728, and therefore can't be a son of Handley Chipman, b. 1717, the son by Hon. John Chipman's second marriage (there was no issue of his third marriage). By Mary Skiff, John had four sons who had families: James, John, Paris, and Ebenezar. Ebenezar was b. 1709 and didn't have a son named John. His older brother John remained in MA and didn't have a son named John, either. That leaves Paris and James as possible fathers for John Chipman of Pittsylvania Co., VA.
Paris Chipman I didn't name any grandchildren in his will. It's a curious document, for he didn't give the married names of any of his daughters, either, though it's known Milly married -- Commeans, and Mary was unmarried.
However, there's a document which indicates his sons Paris II and (presumably) John didn't have surviving issue: a deed filed in Dorchester Co., MD dated 13 Aug 1813, in which Draper Chipman, Ameilia Commeans, and Mary Chipman conveyed to Arthur Wheatley their interest in land owned by Paris Chipman II in Dorchester Co., MD. Evidently Paris Chipman II had died intestate. In 1813 Draper Chipman was a resident of KY, so we may presume there was no difficulty in learning of an interest in the property of Paris Chipman II. If John Chipman, son of Paris Chipman I, had surviving issue, they would have inherited their father's interest in the tract. There was a John Chipman (d. 1829) residing in Sussex Co., DE (as did Ameilia Commeans and Mary Chipman) who was a mill operator, and yet wasn't a party to this deed. I think it obvious this individual wasn't a grandson of Paris Chipman I.

John Chipman disappears from the Pittslvania Co., VA records after 1777. This was a volatile and active section of VA, there have been losses in the records of Pittsylvania Co., and successor counties should be searched for records. Since this man isn't listed in the comprehensive 1787 VA tax lists, he was probably deceased by then, so the period of interest is 1777-1787.

Records:
John Chipman
Pittsylvania Co., VA

Lunenburg Co., VA: Tithes of Cornelius Cargill, 1749. One tithe for John Chipman.
Halifax Co., VA was formed in 1752 from Lunenburg Co.:
March 10, 1752. Jno. This tract is the same purchased of John Been on May 21, 1764; see above.)
Deeds from Entry Record Book 1737-1777 (covers Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Patrick, and Franklin counties).
October 26, 1766. (The Smith River area became Henry County after 1777.)
1777. Pittsylvania Co. Oaths of Allegiance: John Chipman, Jacob Chipman. (John Chipman's Oath of Allegiance qualifies descendants for DAR membership.)

[Most of this material was compiled by Lucille Payne of the Pittsylvania Co., VA Historical Society in 1987/8. I ran across Maud Carter Clement's volume on Pittsylvania County and found John Chipman had been constable in 1767. I thank Lucille Payne for her time spent tracking down these records.

No one (except Handley Chipman) knew there had been Chipmans in colonial VA. My conclusion is that John Chipman of Pittsylvania Co. was Handley's nephew; and as a hypothesis he had four sons in this birth order: William, James, Jacob, and John. The fate of William and Jacob is unknown, but James and John were residing in Sussex Co., DE by the late 1780s; James Chipman being the progenitor of the Chipmans of Scott and Grant Cos., KY. There may have been daughters of whom we presently have no record.
Pittsylvania Co. wasn't the most hospitable place to live. In 1749, people with a modicum of common sense and decent regard for their physical well being were living in the established settlements to the east.]

*****

This deed is recorded in Halifax Co., VA, and there's some interesting history in it:

This Indenture made this fifteenth Day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty six and in the fifth year of the Reign of our Sovereign lord King George the third Between John Chipman of the County of Halifax and Parish of antrim Planter of the one part and Roger Atkinson of the County of and Colony of Virginia Mercht of the other part Witnesseth that the said John Chipman for and in consideration of the sum of Eighty pounds Current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said Roger Atkinson the Receipt whereof he the said John Chipman doth hereby Acknoldge and thereof and of and from Every part and parcel thereof doth hereby acquit Exonerate and Discharge the said Roger Atkinson hath granted Bargained and sold aliened Enfeoffed and Confirmed and by these presents Doth grant Bargain and sell their Enfeoff and Confirm unto the said Roger Atkinson all that tract and parcel of land situate in the County of Halifax and Parish of antrim and on both sides of Cane Creek whereon the said John Chipman now dwells Containing by Estimation one hundred and sixty acres Being part of 383 ac granted by pat to James Hogan date the 10 day of Sep 1760 Limited Bounded Describd as follows Beginning at a Corner Birch on the said creek Thence North Eighty seven Degrees East one hundred and fifty poles Crossing Cane Creek and a branch to pointers South five Degrees East one hundred and seventy six pos to pointers Thence a new dividing line North Eighty four Degrees West two hundred and seventy six pos Crossing Cane Ck to a white oak and pointers Thence the patent line North twenty four Degrees East one hundred and fifty seven poles to the first … and all trees woods … profits Commodities advantages hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever to the said tract or parcel of land and premises above mentioned belonging or in any wise appertaining and also the Revertion and Revertions Remainder and Remainders Rents and Services of the said premises above mentioned and of every part and parcel thereof with the Appurtenances and also all the Estate Right Title Interest Claim and Demand whatsoever Either in Equity or in Law of him the John Chipman of in or to the said premises above mentioned or in any part thereof to have & to hold the said one hundred and ninety acres of land and premises above mentioned and every part and parcel thereof with the Appurtenances unto the said Roger Atkinson his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and Behoof of the said Roger Atkinson his heirs and assigns forever and the said John Chipman for himself & his heirs doth warrant and agree to and with the said Roger Atkinson his heirs and assigns by these present that the said John Chipman the said one hundred and ninety Acres of Land and premises above mentioned and Every part and parcel thereof with the Appurtenances unto the said Roger Atkinson his heirs and assigns Against the said John Chipman & his heirs and all and Every Other person and persons whatsoever Shall and will Warrant and forever Defend By these presents In Witness whereof the said John Chipman hath to these presents set his hand and Affixed his seal the Day and year first above written ----
John JC Chipman his mark
Sealed & Delivered in present of
Ben Lankford
Thos Dillard
Theops Lacy
Jno. I've never seen so much legalese in a deed, which may reflect a cloud on the title or the uncertainties of life on the VA frontier. The absence of a wife relinquishing dower indicates she was deceased, or he was married to a wife who was not his wife when the property was purchased, and therefore she had no dower rights in the property. The use of a mark suggests John Chipman was illiterate.
Jno (John) Donelson, who signed as a witness, was the father of Rachel Donelson who married President Andrew Jackson.]

Good Afternoon: Charles A Chipman, had a Son Charles Willie Chipman (1891 - 1936) Born Texas, Married my Grandmother, Della Angline Archer (1891 - 1983), I have just begun my research and because Hezekiah C. Chipman is such a unique name, I thought it would find my ancestors. I have not been able to find Hezekiah's parents. I can give complete information on Della's family, she had 2 sons and one daughter. One son, my dad is now 97. He has just been diagnosed with cancer, which is why I expedited my search. I have a nephew with the name Chipman, but, he will be the last one, unless, he has sons. He has 3 daughters.

Those with AL ancestors will find Marilyn Davis Barefield's "Old Tuskaloosa Land Office Records & Military Warrants 1821-1825" very useful.

On p. 29 it lists Hezekiah Chipman's land grant in Greene Co., AL, dated 8 Sep 1830. It's No. 7297. You can obtain a copy from the AL archives in Montgomery. The actual land grant shows it was for 79 95/100 acres.

Regrefully, I must ask that I not be contacted again regarding Hezekiah Chipman.

The only thing I'd change in the above sketch is that Hezekiah Chipman didn't die in Kemper Co., MS ca. 1858. He's listed as "H. Chipman" in the 1860 Neshoba Co., MS census on page 48 in Household 298/301 (see attachment). Hezekiah is shown as born in NC, while Dolly is listed as born in SC. Jess is shown as born in AL, while Susan and George were born in MS.

Re: Hezekiah Chipman and Caroline Gordon

For some reason, Hezekiah Chipman was enumerated twice in the 1850 Kemper Co., MS census. The first is Household #349. The second is Household #511. In the #511 enumeration is a child named "Hezekiah." The #511 enumeration was very difficult to read, so you should look at it yourself, but I think this "Hezekiah" is probably yours. His mother would be Dolly, because Hezekiah Chipman's first wife was Elizabeth Lewis.

Elizabeth's mother was also named Elizabeth, and died in 1833 in Greene Co., AL leaving a will, which names her Chipman grandchildren: Charity Chipman, Eleanor Chipman, Betsy Chipman, Thomas Chipman, and William Chipman. Some of the others may have been Chipman daughters who were married when the elder Elizabeth Lewis made her will.

Hezekiah Chipman is a perennial problem in our family, and the quality of research on him isn't good. The only accurate parts of his biography in "A Chipman Genealogy" (1970) are his birthdate and parentage. The only child ascribed to him in the book, Stephen Manlove Chipman, was not his child. Hezekiah didn't marry Sarah Harris, he married Elizabeth Lewis. After Elizabeth died, he married Dolly (maiden name uknown) and had another family by her.

I've attached an old sketch I wrote about Hezekiah Chipman. It probably needs to be updated, but it's basically accurate.

I believe the father of Hezekiah C. Chipman was Hezekiah Chipman who moved from Guilford Co., NC to AL. He lived in TN briefly, and wound up in Kemper Co., MS where he died. He was married twice: to Elizabeth Lewis, and then to Dolly (maiden name unknown). So either Elizabeth Lewis or Dolly was the mother of Hezekiah C. Chipman. Take a look at the 1850 Kemper Co., MS census. The line connects to Paris Chipman of Guilford Co., NC, who had two sons (John and Paris), and from there to James and Mary (Minor) Chipman. James Chipman was a grandson of John and Hope (Howland) Chipman. It's a good line.

There was a prior posting on Ancestry in the Chipman surname message board by David Fleming with the subject "Myrtle Inez Chipman 1900 New York" on 19 Jun 2009. You may want to connect with him if possible.

Based on the information that he posted, I've found her death in the "Ontario, Canada, Deaths, 1869-1936 and Deaths Overseas, 1939-1947" records. The records was registered in the County of Peel, Division of Toronto Township. Her death was on 3 Jan 1919 due to pneumonia. At the time of her death, her last name is "Blood". A Jeff Blood is listed as the informant.

If you don't have access to the Canadian records, please drop me a message with your e-mail and I will forward you a copy of the document.

I've also found her 1900 and 1910 US census records living with her parents. Additionally there appears to be a record for a border crossing in 4 May 1917 from the US to Canada by Jeff Blood (a carpenter) and his wife Myrtle.

Hope this helps.

Ken
