George Preston Chisolm

George Preston Chisolm, the youngest son of William John Milton Chisolm and Dorothy Lee Swanson Chisolm had until now been lost. During research in the archives in Jackson, Mississippi his records from service in Company B of the 35th Mississippi Infantry was located. Muster rolls showed that he died 11 July 1862 at home in Rio, Kemper County Mississippi of illness contracted while serving in the unit. His widow, Mary M. (Felton) Chisolm filed a claim to the Confederate Government for his backpay. We do not know where he is actually buried but logic says the Chisolm Cemetery there in Rio. Anyone desiring info please contact me on regular email at: 3chisolms@att.net concerning any other data I may have possession of.

R, David Chisolm

Sandra,
You will find family members who will spell their name Chisholm while others Chisolm. Some of my wife's 4th cousins use Chisholm while those who descend from the other brother have dropped the 2nd h go by Chisolm. The Chisholms who settled in Charleston, S.C. dropped the 2nd h back in the l700's but both these groups are family.
Thru the years the name has been de Chisholme-Chisholme-Chisholm-Chisolm.
Also in your messages, it would help if you could tell where they lived to narrow search down somewhat, like your Carsons Chisolm/Chisholm, where they were born or lived or died.

Great!! We have a copy of William G. Chisolm's l914 Chisolm Genealogy. My wife's Chisholms branch off from yours with John the uncle of your Alexander who went to Charleston. Her branch went to Beaufort Dist. S.C. a generation or two after yours. Some of her close relatives use the spelling of Chisholm while others use Chisolm. I have gone thru the lines of the wives of y'alls Chisolms which take you back thru most of the countries of Europe . In Scotland alone you have direct lines to over 50 different last names, with mutiple lines in some of those names such as Bruce, Stewart, Dunbar, Mac leod, etc. You descend from almost every Royal House in Europe and from some countries that no longer exist. Just finished a few months ago (with the help of other relatives) some of the lines that go back to 300 B.C. If you open a history book on early European History you are a direct descendant to almost everyone mentioned. In Scotland, the last King you desc. from is Robert II, In England, Edward III.

Sorry to say I didn't find your Thomas Rutledge Chisolm in William G. Chisolm's l9l0 book. There are several reasons that I feel he almost has to be from the Charleston St. Helena branch of the S.C. Chisolms/Chisholms. The Charleston/St. Helena branch are the only S.C. Chisolms who have family ties to the Rutledges the Prioleaus. Susan Matilda Harriet Chisolm married Oliver Hering Middleton one of their daughters, Eleanor Maria Middleton married Major Gen. Benjamin Huger Rutledge C.S.A. George Chisolm of l772 married Providence Hext Prioleau, of their 12 children only two have their lines continued to l9l0, several others only one more generation. Do you have an appox. year place of birth on Thomas Rutledge Chisolm? I'll give you what I think are possible leads as to who his father-grandfather could be in next message.

Those who are buried in Beech Branch Baptist Cemetery are my wife's Chisholms (one branch dropped the 2nd h in Chisholm). This weekend got a packet from a newly found Chisholm cousin who was born in that area (Hampton Co.) In it were some transfers of some land deeds, late l700's early l800's and one Prioleau several of the Charleston/St. Helena Island Chisolms are listed, I had no idea any of them had gone that far in land. You gave death date of Thomas , do you know about when he was born, might narrow down to who his father might have been. A number of the Hampton Co. families bounced back and forth between there Barnwell Co. as well as the Augusta Ga. area. My wife's mother her siblings were born in Dunbarton, Barnwell Co. a town that no longer exists, its under the Savannah River.

In msg. 38 you have Thomas b. 9-6-l871 d. ll-l0-1927 Carolyn born died 5-7-l88l. Can we go over these dates again? Don't live in S.C., we live in Fla. James Chisholm Sr. b. ca. l780 had two daughters one son, James Chisholm Jr. b. ca. l8l7. James Jr. had 3 sons, Virgil Andrew Chisholm b. l838 moved to Brooksville, Fla after the WBTS, his sons, James Miles Chisholm Rev. Andrew Mortimer Chisholm (Rev. Andrew went to Kissimmee, Fla where his desc. still live, (50 miles west of here.) his son James Miles I believe remainded in S.C. James Jr.s 2nd son, William McBride Chisholm had the following sons, William McBride Chisholm Jr. married but no children. Robert L. Chisholm, Gifford Chisholm, John Edwin Chisholm Howard Chisholm all of these married. James Jr.s 3rd son, John James Chisholm, his sons, Jesse W. Chisholm Milton M. Chisholm, John Albert Chisholm Leland Deloach Chisholm, all of these married except possibly Leland, we have his obit, will have to check. Forgot to mention that William McBride Chisholm Sr. was born l845 John James Chisholm b. l852. Any way most of these stayed in the Hampton Co. area until the present gen. and some of them dropped the 2nd h in Chisholm.

Your line in the book stops at page 42, Samuel Prioleau Chisolm (no wife mentioned) 4th child of Samuel Prioleau Chisolm his lst wife, Martha Chaplin. They must have lived on St. Helena in Beaufort District, 2 of Samuel Jr.'s siblings married Fripps, another a Jenkins their mother a Chaplin. The Chaplins, Fripps Jenkins were from St. Helena. Actually you have two Chisolm lines. This book is a must for you, "Chisolm Genealogy, Being a Record of the Name from A.D. l254" "With Short Sketches of Allied Families" by William Garnett Chisolm l9l4 (earlier I had said l910). It is put out by U.M.I. Books on Demand, 300 North Zeeb Road, Ann Arbor, Mich. 48106-l346 ph. l-800-521-0600 (reprint l994). The book is 95 pages counting the index. Let me know if they don't have copies any more. If you trace the lines of the Chisolm wives you'll find they take you back to much earlier times than 1254. Your Samuel P. Chisolm Jr. is the 22nd gen. in the l9th gen. you have a Chisolm marring a Chisolm have two lines until gen. l5 then both are identical.
