Sorry about missing your message. Samuel is my grandfather and was born in Roanoke County. He and nita were married in 1904 in Roanoke County and lived near Cave Spring for years. In the 1930s they moved near their oldest son Harry in Bedford County. Their surname is missspelled in the 1930 census. They moved back to Roanoke where Samuel died in the mid 1950s and was living 0n Melrose Ave.

Thanks for the note. I have copies of many documents
such as Granddad's (Samuel) WWI draft registration card
and the marriage document for Jeese Chocklett. I also
have copies of the Civil War pension documents for Jeese.

At this point I'm still trying to connect Jeese and Henry
Chocklett. I feel confident that they are brothers and that
there were at least two sisters. I also beleve their father
was Jeese Chockley, who moved from Pittsylvania County just before 1840 to Bedford, TN. I just can't the documentation
that I need but there are supporting documents for Henry.
For example he lists his parents as Jeese and Lucy Chockley
on his second marriage license.
If you come across any supporting documents I would appreciate it you would share them with me, likewise let me
if you would like copies of the documents that I have.
For a while I was in Blacksburg regularly until my youngest son graduated from Virginia Tech, he is at Wake Forest now
which puts me close, so I hope I can get back to Roanoke and Bedford several times a year. Let me if I can help in your research. I have posted most of my direct connections on rootsweb and ancestry.

Cousin Jim Chocklett

We have a Samuel Chocklett married to Nita Bowman in our family line. He was born in 1880, but we don't know where. Is this your ancestor? If so where was he from?

Hi Robert,

I'm not sur if I responded to your posting as there does not appear to be a reply from me. But thanks to your lead I did find the same information as both James E. Chocklett and Benjamin Bowman are my great grandfathers. All indications are that Elby ( Elva ) Chocklett was adopted and indead my have been from Tenn but ended up as a child in Indian Valley in North West Floyd, not far from Bent Mountain where James Chocklett lived. SHe does not appear in the 1860 census but does in the 1870 as being 14 years old. Its at this
point that she and James E. live inCave Spring or Roanoke until the 1920s - 1930s but I can not find any other data before the 1870 census.

If anyone else is searching the same line, I found the
marriage record in the Roanoke County Library recently.
James E. Chocklett married Elby ( Elva ?) Stuart in
1875 in Roanoke. She was listed as having been
born in Lincoln COunty Tenn. Her father is lidted as
Giles Stuart but I found him listed in the 1870 census
as Giles Steward in Cave Spring Va.

Also on the same record page, I found Benjamin Bowman
and Julia Henry marriage record, my other great grand
parents.

I have listed some information on the GEDCOM at this site
but still have many missing pieces. Will share all data with
anyone having an interest. I have a lot of information on
Jesse and Henry Chocklett but little on the next generations.
I have some photos from the Salem and Bedford area of
Samuel Carol Chocklett, his wife ( Nita ) and their children.
I would appreciate any addition photos or information.
