I few years ago, I was researching along the same lines of the African-American/Anglo connection, and it seems pretty obvious the connections, as both family tree's seem to migrate simultaneously to Texas to California, and even before that. But that isn't my primary interest, in those past years of research I stumbled upon a reference to a African-American Choice Matriarch out of Oakland I believe, but have since lost track of her. She seemed to truly be the historian of the family. I live in the South Bay and am a historian by trade, I'd love to connect with her and talk. If anyone has any leads I'd be very appreciative

She married
George W Louns probably not the original spelling of the name. They migrated to North Carolina, then to Oklahoma and finally to California.
Marlene Morrow

Re: Ben & Cora Choice

Hello Phil,
It's good to hear from you again. I like to point out that this search has been one confusing one for me. I know that my grandfather Tullie (Tull) Choice father was Benjamin Choice and mother is Cora Wilcox/Jackson. I'm confused on Cora's maiden name because I've obtained the death certificate for my grandfather Tull and the informant (Lenora Tyeski) listed Cora's maiden name as being Wilcox. I then tried to find out who Lenora Tyeski was, because I had an aunt name Lenora. But, seem to have a problem with that because my father doesn't know anything about the background of his family. This is what I can tell you thus far, My grandfather Tullie (Tull) Choice father was Benjamin Choice (Ben) and his father was Benjamin Choice.

In the 1870 census for Smith County. I found numerous choice families in Starrville Beat that may have been slave owner Tully Choice slaves, who are my relatives:
Ana (Aria)35, Benjamin (41), Benjamin (8), Dabney (6), Edward (4), Erwin (8) Fannie (18), Jackson (12), John (7m), Major (18), Nancy (67), Patsey (13), Robin (43), Robin (12), and Sell (10). I haven't figure out who Benjamin's wife was-assuming it may have been Robin or Ana, that is the question.

Then in 1880, i have Ben (25) and Cora (21), Isaiah (37), Lilly (5), John W. (5), Joseph B.B. (2), Martha (25), Mattie (3), and Mattie L. (10).

I then get lost after that...But know that Ben and Cora had children listed in 1900 census index:
Willie (19), Tullie (14), Bennie (13), Flin (11), Rosie (7), Deslie (4), Hattie (6m), Lillie (24), and a nephew Albert Jackson (8).

What I'm trying to do now, is put all the children together with their family and go from there. I have found some..but it getting difficult to find everyone.

I hope this will help you a little and I do have other relatives that are not listed at this moment. But if you can fill in come of the gaps, I may have a little more to share with you. As far as Cora-it's looking to me that Cora was from Arkansas. This was stated by the informant on the death certificate for Tull Choice.

Please keep in contact with me Cuz, we may be breaking some of the Choice family history. I still have a lot more to share.

Benjamin & Amy are my ggggg grand parents who I have traced to so far. Looking for Benjamine and Amy's parents. They probably will not be listed as a complete family with names on the 1830 census, only the slave owner, and the number of female and male slaves with their ages. And they weren't in Oklahoma at no time that I've traced so far. Hopefully I can make a link to you soon though. Thanks!

Hello Brita,
I too have not been on the Message Board for a while. I just decided to restart my search since I was out of college. I just found information for my mother's relatives. Both my parents were placed in foster care at an early age. My mother new a few things about her parents, but not alot to retrieve a death certificate. I just located my grandmother and would have never thought that she had gotten married to someone else, and her name had changed.
Now, I'm also having problems with locating my father's side of the family. I have located death certificates for them and it was like searching for a needle in a haystack. But, I found that information in 2002. Now what I'm trying to find out is how to place all my great grandparents children to each other and their children. This becomes hard for me because I have to really start with my grandfather and what others have told me before they passed. Well, I'm not having too much luck with it either. Because, I'm coming across my grandfather's name and maybe one or two children are listed that I do know, but I can't figure out the other children and individuals in the household. I'm also trying to locate the wives of my grandfather and go with that finding. I've only found about three of them, but know that six or seven wives exist, and one may be my grandmother listed twice (Roberta and Bertie. This is really a lot to search, but I will slowly get it from what little information I do have since 2002. I have to organize my searchs and place individuals to the missing puzzle as possible.
What individuals are you looking for?
Dear Rita,

Sorry it has been so long since I written messages about the Choices. I have been working on my father's side of the family and had slacked off on my mother's side for a while. Recently, I saw that Texas had opened up their death records and made images and information about Texas's death available on the internet. That was awesome. As for the Choice side of my family, I'm still stuck where I was before. The earliest person I show is Major Choice and Francis Choice in Smith County Texas. Major Choice is shown on the 1870 census under the household of a Nancy Choice, who is 67 at the time. There are other Choices in the area at this time. Right now I will have to go through my records, but my problem is I can't find any Choices that connect with my Choice side before 1880. Major had many children and these children are the connection that many of those on the message board seem to be part of, but whoever was Major's parents, I have no idea. I'll check my records and see where I am at with them.

Zion, Goodman, and Piney Grove Centery. I think my problem is..the women have gotten married and the last names have changed making it very difficult to fix the puzzle.
Then I have my grandmother "Cora" being a Jackson from the start, and looking at the dc the informant listing her maiden name as "Wilcox."
I'm sure about Willie (Will) and Tullie (Tull)Choice who both died in 1961. There is no doubt that these are my kin folks.
Do you have any other information on Cora (death, or other marriage, if any).
I have some of the pieces, it's just I have to fit them all together.

Hello Sharon,
Let me fill you in on what I know about my family. My grandparents are Tull (1961) and Roberta Choice (1953). My grandmother had fifteen children, eight of them were by Tull Choice. It's said that my grandfather Tull has 32 children and this is were it becomes confusing. I know of three Aunts from my grandfather's other wives:
1. Lenora Choice-Austin "Booger" who married Mr. Austin. Lenora had a child Lillie B., who died in the corn field and she left a daughter, who still lives in Kilgore)
2.Catherine Choice-Dixon who died Kilgore had a son
3. Lorene Choice-Dansby (Feb 14, 1906-March 31, 1994)died in Oklahoma in 1994.
It's said that my grandfather (Tull) had approxiately seven wives: Roberta King, Bertie (unknown last name-could be the same person as well), Viola Bell, another Viola (last name unknown), Sara Mossenberg, and a Victoria Trin (that name could be spelled wrong).
When my grandmother (Roberta) died the state took over the younger kids because my grandfather (Tull) said he couldn't take care of all the children. My father believes he was nine, when the state took them and he doesn't know anything else about the Choice family.
I luckly came across the dc for my grandmother and grandfather. Because my father doesn't remember anything, and the ones that knew about my grandfather and grandmother were deceased when I tried to look into our family history.
As far as I know, family members are buried at Mt. Zion and Goodman Cemetery.
I do still have an Uncle still living who was born in 1925, that lives in Gary, Indiana. But is not the son of Tull Choice. This is my grandmother's son and he doesn't know anything about Tull, because he had went into the Army.
This is where I need to fill in the blanks, and find anyone that knew of the individuals listed above or know the wives of Tull Choice in Kilgore, Texas. He died in 1961 from being kicked by a horse and later died from a Heart Attack.
Hello Phil,
It's nice to hear from you again, it's been years since I've spoken to you.
I see that you have obtained a little more information about the Choice family. However, I am a little confused? I like to know if Priairebluff Cemetery, and Mt. Zion Cemetery are the same cemetery?
After obtaining a dc for my grandfather Tullie (Tull)it states that he is buried at Mt. Zion with my grandmother, and other relatives. I did visit this cemetery, some years ago, and plan on visiting it again, to speak to the pastor of the church. I'm hoping to get a little more information (if possible)about this cemetery.
Also, I'm coming across two different names for Cora Choice, do you know when Ben and Cora died, or if Cora had remarried?
I'm also searching for an individual name Lenora Tyeski or anyone related to this individual. This person was the informant on the dc for Tull Choice.

I do believe she had a sister named Hattie(born 1900), who later married a Elmer Cruger . This is the Hattie Choice Cruger, I believe that is on the 1900 census with Tullie Choice. Do you know if your grandfather had sisters named Mattie and Hattie Choice ?

Hi Sharon,
Yes, you are related to me....
If you will check the 1900 Census for Smith Cnty, you will see the listing of the Choice family. My grandfather was Tullie (Tull) Choice.
As I look at the 1900 Census records i see a Mattie or Hattie who appears to be an infant born on April-1900. Is this your great grandmother?

I think you sent your message to the wrong person. I have no idea who Charlie is. There are Choices in my heritage but he is not one of them. My Choices all come from Texas and GA. Some ended up in NJ. All were African American.

Roberta
