I have extensive ancestry named Swinyer...one was married to ancestor from Canada Louis La Paie...also Sophia Swinyer was born in Frandirth, Vermont, married to Peter Snay and died in Saranac Lake, NY, my home town. I also seem to have found evidence that the name Swinyer was Scottish.

I am descended from Lawrence Swinyer's son Stephen (my father is the 4th Lawrence Swinyer in the family line) and am wondering if anyone has any more information on Stephen or his family in Illinois. Or any information on how Lawrence Sr. came to the United States.

Thanks! -Leah in Illinois

Hi I'm hoping someone can help me here. I'm looking for a Francois Chouinard born abt 1821 in French Canada and married Cynthia (or perhaps Vincynthia) Gerard b abt 1836. Her father was Joseph Gerard. Together they had at least 7 children, Frank (Francois), Joseph, Henry, Louis, Cynthia, Hattie/Harriet and Almon/Edmund/Elmon. They moved to Boonton, NJ before 1870 and Francois was a Cooper. I haven't been able to find who his parents were or where in French Canada they came from. When I search for records a Francois X Chouinard always comes up which is I believe who you've mentioned in your post. However, I have no idea if this is the same person or a distant relative to my ancestor Francois Chiounard.

If anyone has any information on this family, I would greatly appreciate it!

Best,
Kate

I'm looking for a Chouinard family in NJ as well, there's really only 1 in Jersey around Patterson Francois and Cynthia Gerard Chouinard/Swenord in the 1880s. I realize that's not the decade or even century you're interested in but they did have a number of children who seemed to remain in the area, looking into their descendants might help. There is also a Chouinard family association in Canada and they have a book tracing the genealogy down the different lines you might try there.

Best of luck
From the info that I have, Joseph Horace Sr. (there is also a junior) arrived in the US in 1874 at the age of 20. My Caliste Chouinard info goes back to the 1600's. I found Jean Baptiste Chagnon dit Larose, born Abt. 1722 in Iles Bouchard, Quebec, Canada; married Marie-Francoise Girard Jan. 28, 1742/3 in Verennes, Vercheres, Quebec, Canada. I don't see the Girard info in any other place. I'll bet we're very distant cousins!!!

Thanks for getting back to me, now I have a place in NY where I can start looking. I'm not sure if my Joseph Henry is a match for your Joseph Horice, Joseph Henry's parents were Francois Chouinard and Cynthia Gerard, her father was Joseph Gerard and lived with the family in 1870 and 1880 in Boonton, Morris, NJ. Francois and several of his sons disappeared between 1870 and 1880. I found a match for a Joseph Gerard in 1860 living in Chesterfeild, Essex, NY with the right age and is from French Canada and has a daughter Harriett living with him and his wife Louisa, Harriett is the name of one his grandchildren. So I think that family is a possible match for the Gerard side. I'll have to check how close that is to New Brunswick, NY. Do you know when your family moved to Wisconsin? I vaguely remeber there being a census in 1900 which had some of the missing brothers in 1880 being in Wisconsin. Or at least possible matches for the names and ages living together, the father was still missing though, but he would have been getting up in years by 1900. Perhaps the father and the older boys moved to Wisconsin with your relatives.

Thanks for the information if I find anything I will let you know!
Best,
Kate

Hi! We could be very distantly related! My immediated great grandfather was Calixte Chouinard Son of Pierre Chouinard and Madeleine Chagnon. He married Elisabeth Labombarde in St.Marc Sur Richelieu, Canada. I believe the church burned down. It's outside of Quebec. The only Joseph I see married Marie-Madeleine Leclerc 8-4-1788 in St.Jean, Port Joli, Quebec, Canada.
My grandfather had a brother Joseph Horace born in 1854 . My grandmother told me that before they moved to Wisconsin, the Chouinard family lived in New Brunswick, NY. I haven't checked that out. That's all the info I have about NY.

I know your message was posted a while ago but I was hoping you might have found some information on any Chouinards who came from French Canada to NY and then to NJ? In my family I have a Joseph Henry Chouinard born in 1859 in NY and his parents were born in French Canada but he lived most of his life in NJ. There don't seem to be any other Chouinard families in NJ at around that time and your post is the first one I've come across mentioning Chouinards coming from Canada to NY and then on to somewhere else. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

Hello,
Some years ago, there was a family reunion and celebration of the Chouinard relatives who had traced their ancestry back 300 years. I am part of that family, born in Quebec and part of the St. Jean Port Jolie arrivals three centuries ago. Although I did not attend this reunion, there are cousins who did so. There is a Coat of Arms for the family Chouinard and other interesting information you might be able to find from Montreal.
I once travelled to St. Jean Port Jolie and found the memorial stone with our name on it signifying the arrival of the Chouinards. Best of luck to you.
Dolores

Does anyone have any information on a Francis/Francois Chouinard/Swenor/Swenord/Schouinard born abt 1821 in French Canada and was a cooper and married to Cynthia Gerard b abt 1836. They had 7 children Frank/Francis b.1852, Henry b.1856, Louis b.1858, Joseph b.1859, Cynthia b.1861, Elmer/Edmond b.1862, Harriet b.1862. The family moved to Boonton, NJ probably between 1860-70. By 1880 the father and the elder brothers seem to have disappeared from the census records. Joseph married Mary Lane and had daughter Katherine Marie Vincythia Swenord b.1894 who is my great grandmother. Joseph's brother Almon/Edmond married a woman named Annie and had at least 4 children, Mary T, Fannie E, Edmund and Helen. Edmund married someone named Bertha and had at least 3 children John b.1922, William b.1923 and Anna b.1924 they lived in Boonton/Montville NJ. I don't know who the female children married. But I'd love to hear from anyone who has any information or is related to this family.

Thanks

Your Francois Chouinard is not the same person as Francois Xavier Chouinard born in Montreal in 1821. The Montreal born Francois Xavier Chouinard settled in Trenton, Ontario, around 1850 and sometime in the 1870's he moved on to Muskegon, Michigan, where he died in 1891. I have no knowledge of your Francois Chouinard.

Hi. I don't actually have much information either. My parents were divorced when I was 12 and we didn't live in Ontario where the rest of the family were. I know that my grandmother - Theresa Hawley - lived at 51 George St. Trenton for most of her married life, my grandfather had passed away already by the time I was born. I only met the relatives including Fern a couple of times. There were 5 boys - Bobby,Doug, Cecil, Jerry and William and just the one girl Fern. Bobby was mentally handicapped - according to my mother due to the ineptness of the town doctor who was under the influence at the time of delivery - not sure if that is true or not. Unfortunately because Fern was the only girl alot of his care fell on her and he was apparently very difficult to handle. After my grandfather passed away my grandmother found she had to place him in care. As long as I knew them he resided in the Kingston hospital until his death. The details are fuzzy to me because, as I say, we didn't really have much contact with them. One memory of Fern's family that I have is one summer when my family went to Trenton to visit she came also with her family and my brother and her daughter got along famously. So much so that we teased them about being kissing cousins although we didn't know what that meant.
My daughter and my grandmother shared the same birthday - June 13. I believe - and I may have forgotten exactly - that my daughter was born on my grandmother's 82 birthday. I have never searched for any information on my family but for some reason Fern's name popped into my head yesterday and I felt compelled to enter it into the computer and up popped this website. So for whatever that is worth if I have any information you are looking for I am glad to share it. Is Fern still alive? As far as I know all the brothers have long passed away.
So if our grandmothers were sisters I guess that makes us - second cousins? It would be interesting to know something about my grandmother's family.
Regards,
Tammie

Hello - Are you looking for information on Teresa Hawley's family & ancestry? I have plenty there but you probably know more of the Tyler side than I do. I only know what I have gathered from mostly obituaries & corresponding with a couple of people. Perhaps we can help each other.

look forward to hearing from you
Jude

Kimberly, Do you have any info about Charles Joseph Chouinard, born 1908 in Chicago, Ill.? His parents were Edmond and Eunice Chouinard. I believe Edmond (or Edward) Chouinard was born in French Canada about 1886. Charles had a daughter, Jeanne and a son, Philippe. Charles died in 1974 in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Charles may have had a marriage previous to his marriage to Esther. I am trying to find descendants of Charles in order to confirm or disprove this theory. Thank you. Cheryl

Hello--

I am looking for any information anyone has about Euclid Chouinard, b. about 1888. He lived in Northhampton/Holyoke Massachusetts, but I'm not sure if he was born there or in Canada. His parents are George & Elizabeth Chouinard; sometime around 1923 he married a lady named Ida. I believe she may have been called Ida Carriere when they were married, but I'm not sure, and I'm not sure if that was her maiden name if so. Any information about Euclid or his wife would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thank you,

M. Chouinard

Hi Bill, This is an ancient query but if you are still interested your cousin Laurie and I researched this a couple of years ago. We probably have much of the same information but the program she is using presents a better picture than the old software I am using. Contact her at l2daupeh@hotmail.com. We have also researched Francoise Chouinard, Toussaint's only sister, and have much information. My files are about two months behind in currently obtained information and again her software presents a more complete picture than the old software I am using. -- Don Breneau

Hello--

I tried to send this message to the e-mail address in your post, but I got a failure notice, so thought I'd post it here, too. I'm at mishka824m@gmail.com. :)

I can't tell you how excited I was to get your response on the Ancestry.com board! It's so great to find my family...it's been so long that I haven't known anything about you, I guess I thought maybe I never would. I'm so glad to have found you.

I would definitely love to be in touch with you. There is so much I want to know about the family, and I'd love to get to know you better. And bring on the questions right back at me! For now I'll just say that I am married, and live in California, with no kids (at least yet, and given my age, probably not in the future, unfortunately).

I hope to hear from you soon!

Michelle
