Judi,
My name is Bruce Hadden. Your grandmother Irene was my grandmother's sister. Her name was Marie. I remember Aunt Irene visiting my grandmother in Oklahoma. In fact she made my older sister Cindy a dress while she was visiting. My dad has a few pictures stashed away of you mom that I can scan and email to you, if I can convince him to dig them out! Your greatgrandmother Ella's indian land is still intact. We've kept it in the family, as well as the stories that go along with it. Hopefully you will get this and we can communicate more.

Rene' Auguste Choteau founded the dynasty which dominated, for so many years, the City of St. Louis and the fur trade in the Missouri valley.

We know little abour the very early life of Rene' Auguste Choteau, except that he was born in New Orleans and was the son of Rene' and Marie Therese Bourgeois Choteau(1). Pierre Laclede Liguest became his step-father, when Auguste was still a young boy(2). The dates given for the birth of Rene' Auguste vary greatly. This is not an especially important point, but it is interesting to note that some authorities say he was born in 1739(3), and some say 1750(4), but the generally accepted year seems to be 1749.(5)

Auguste [the Rene' was soon dropped] Choteau was joined by his half-brother, Pierre, in directing the family fortunes. Another pair of brothers, sons of Pierred the elder, carried on the work begun by the earlier pair. These younger brothers were Auguste Pierre and Pierre Choteau Jr., know to his family as "Cadet"(6). These four men were ably assisted by many others, related to them by blood or marriage. A brief survey of some of these connections will help us to understand the family history.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Bennitt, ed., History of Louisiana Purchase Exposition, p. 47.
2. Thwaites, Early Western Travels, Vol. 22, p. 216, n.
3. International Encyclopedia, Vol 5, p. 274.
4. Bennitt, p. 47.
5. Americana, Vol. 6, p. 595.
6. Chittenden, History of the Fur Trade, p. 382 disputes other authorities. He says Pierre Jr. was the son of Auguste Chouteau.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Auguste Choteau married Marie Therese, daughter of Gabriel Cerre', a fur trader who had moved from Kaskaskia to St. Lois. Auguste Choteau had a son, Augustus Aristide Choteau(7). Pieere Chouteau (sic) the Elder is described as the younger half-brother of Auguste(8). Since Auguste's mother was living and since Pierre Laclede Liguest was step father to Auguste at the time of the establishment of St. Louis, we may surmise that the little half-brother was the son of Pierre Laclede Liguest, although he was called "Chouteau." This theory is strengthened by references to Pierre Chouteau Jr. as a grandson of Liguest(9).

Pierre Chouteau the Elder, so called, was the father of several sons. August Pierre, Pierre Jr., and Paul Liguest are reputed to be sons by one marrieage(10). By another union he was the father of Cyprian(11) and Louis Pharamond(12). Francis and Frederick Chouteau, who were part Osage, were probably his sons. Pierre Chouteau Jr. became a great merchant prince, probably the best known of the dynasty.

Auguste and Pierre Choteau Sr. had a sister who married Sylvester L'Abbadie, also interested in the fur trade. Their daughter, Emilie, was married in 1794 to Bernard Pratte, another fur trader. Bernard Pratte Jr., offspring of this union, made the third generation in this direct line to enter the fur business(13). Sophie L'Abbadie, sister of Emilie, married her cousin Auguste Pierre Chouteau(14). Later in life, A.P. Chouteau married an Osage girl, called Rosalie, and by her had several children(15).

Pierre Chouteau Jr. married Emily Gratiot and her sister married Emily Gratiot and her sister married Jean Pierre Cabanne', a fur trader associated with the Chouteau company. Charles P. Chouteau was the son of Pierre and he in turn had a son Pierre Jr., to whom we are entitled for much knowledge about this interesting family(16). Paul Ligueste Chouteau, brother of Pierre Chouteau Jr., was succeeded by a son, Edward L. Chouteau.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Thwaites, Vol 20, p. 108, n.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first recorded step toward founding this commercial empire in the west was taken in the latter part of 1763 when an expedition was sponsored by Maxent, Laclede and Co. sailed from New Orleans up to Ft. Chartres. Here their supplies were stored for the winter. Laclede, the leader of the group, and his yound stepson went on up the river looking for a desirable spot on which to build a trading post. In December, 1763, they decided upon a point neart the mouth of the Missouri River. Then they returned to Ft. Chartres to await the coming of milder weather(17). During the months of waiting, men were recruited from Ft. Chartes, Cahokia, and Ste, Genevieve and on February 15, 1764, about thirty of these men were sent across the river to clear the land for the new post. In spite of his youth, August Chouteau was put in command of these men(18). Toung Chouteau was then hardly fourteen years old but the Chouteau men, like many other pioneer youths, have been able to assume responsibility at an early age.

Numerous trees were growing on the site of the new post. Under Chouteau's direction these were felled and from them were built the first houses where St. Louis now stands. In April, Laclede brought a stock of goods and joined the pioneers at the post. Laclede named the place St. Louis, in honor of Louis IX, the cononized former king of France(19). For some years, however, the nickname Pain-court (short [loaf of] bread) was in more common use. Ir may have described the scarcity of provisions during the first year(20). <20> The settlement at St. Louis had probably been made more than a year before news of the cession of this territory to Spain reached the little outpost. During this year a number of other proud Creole families had come from New Orleans. There ensued several years of friction between them and the Spanish authorities.

Laclede and Choteau began at once the two-fold policy of expansion which led to the supremacy of their trading company. The objectives of this policy were, first, to win the confidence and allegianceof the Indians, their principle customers, and, second, to improve the physical conditions of their headquarters post.

17.
Please help! I am looking for information on how to purchase this scrapbok that was at one time listed on the website "corabaker.com/history" and was put together by Jane Clark Chouteau, created by Design-Sight as far back as 2009. The images in this scrapbook were taken from contents of two original scrapbooks that were kept by Jane C. Chouteau's grandfather Henry August Chouteau. I have tried to contact this person to buy this book, however I have not been able to get a response. If anyone has this book or know of anyone who has it I would be willing to discuss a method of payment to have the pages copied and sent to me.

Thank you.

Hi William,

Thank you for the info. I'm glad to know that he is buried where I had him buried. I have most everything you sent me. I have been in touch with Heidelburg University about trying to find his real name. The person I got in touch with said it would cost a lot to do the research on him so I never got any further. I have a copy of his death bed statement from a member of the family here in Alabama. He was my Granddaugther's GGGGG Grandfather. I think I put enough G's in my note. I have pictures of him, his wife and descendants here in Alabama. Are you kin to him? I will email you my info on him if you want it. Email me your email address.
I have more information on his family here in the us. There is a translation from the german in the St Louis historical society that says his real name is Rocero, Prince of Austria. It indicates his brother Filippo killed their father and he was blamed for it. Then he left the country.

He attended the Heidelberg University but a review of the matriculation records do not help to identify him.

He appears to have been a contract surgeon for the south in the civil war.

After the way he sided with the Union and the KKK tried to kill him. Much testimony is available in the congressional records.

He indeed is buried in the Bluff Springs cemetery near Blue Mound.

William Elliott

Chouteau DNA Studies?

Hello,
Does anyone know of any DNA studies for the Chouteau surname?

My great great grandmother was Mary Pauline Chouteau who was born in about 1844 in the St. Louis area. Her father was listed as "Paul Chouteau."

If my Mary was the daughter of the famous Paul Liguest Chouteau she was born after both of his wives died, so I don't know where to go with that idea.

I believe that at times she may have also used the last name of Laclede.

I have read lots of Chouteau genealogies, but haven't been able to nail down just how Mary fits into the Choteau line and where in the Chouteau line the "Paul Chouteau" that was her father belonged.

Thank you.

Marie Pauline Chouteau b. MO 1843

Hello, My great great grandmother, Marie or Mary Pauline Chouteau was born in MO in 1843. She married Henry Klute or Clute in St. Clair Co., Il, in 1859.

Does anyone have a Marie Pauline in their Chouteau line? She died in 1901 and is burried at Mt. Carmel in Belleville, IL.

I have been at a loss to find Marie Pauline's family, but have thought that maybe her middle name was a clue to her genealogy since the name "Paul" comes up in various Chouteau genealogies. Seems like most of the Chouteau women were named Marie but were given different middle names. My Marie named her own son, my g grandpa, John Paul, so I hope that "Paul" may point me to her people.

I have her with Henry on the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census in IL, but other than the fact that she was born in MO, I have no idea who her parents were.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.
Lexi

I'm afraid I haven't read the book. Is it supposed to be historically acurate? The Chouteaus, August and Pierre moved to St Louis in 1764 or soon thereafter when, with LaClede they founded St Louis as far as I understand. They might have had a brother in New Orleans that stayed but I don't know. Sorry I couldn't help. Rene Paul

I am looking for information concerning Pelagie Chouteau, who married Barthelemew Berthold. Barthelemew Berthold helped to form (and reform) the American Fur Company over a time span of three decades. My interests focus mainly on the economic and political endeavors and plans of the Chouteau's enterprises in New Mexico and Chihuahua, Mexico. For a fact, either A.P. or Pierre Chouteau passed through the Santa Fe trail and was promptly arrested by Spanish Authorities in New Mexico where he was imprisoned (and gathered intelligence) for years. I am looking to know if any other members of this powerful family traveled deep into new mexico later on, as well. Thanks-- John Garcia

He is supposed to be buried in the Bluff Springs Methodist Church Cemetery, in Blue Mound, Illinois. Can anyone verify that he is buried there? He died before 1900, as his wife in Alabama is listed as a widow on the 1900 Census. Who were his parents and was he born in Austria or Louisiana? I have pictures of him as a young man and as an older man. I also have a picture of his daughter.

Are your saying, you think there is a Indian connection between L.A. CHATEAU and Mary L. GRINDSTAFF or L.A.CHATEAU and his parents.

I always heard that we were related to the Chouteau's from St. Louis. I can't find anything on L.A. Chouteau. I don't know what L or A stand for, he was born abt 1850. I have found the Grindstaff's all the way back to 1786

I am trying to trace my line in the Chouteau family and I noticed in your query that you spelled Chouteau [ Chateau ].
My g-g-grandfather Was listed the same way, but his children were [ Chouteau ]. His name as best I can find thus far is L.A. Chouteau. I am trying to find out who his parents
were. He was born abt. 1850 and married May Grindstaff abt. 1867.
I am trying to piece together the lives of Charles Cowardin and his children. Emma and Edwin Cowardin were sent to live with a John Chouteau after their mother died sometime after 1870. They were said to live somewhere around Big Cabin, though as adults they are found in Vinita and Blue Jacket, OK. The youngest child, Charles Cowardin was living with his grandmother, Jane Bender in Arkansas. Catherine "Lucy" (Bender) Cowardin was their mother and was said to be Indian. Her father was German, however, so if she was she was not full blood. Her mother Jane was from TN
