Okay. I've updated my family tree leading down to Agnes so you should be able to connect your tree in from there. I'm going to try to give you access to my tree now, if I can remember how to do that!

We will have to figure out our connection eventually.

I plan to begin scanning the book today.

I know you are moving - so I don't want to bother you - should I send several pages at a time to you or would you rather that I wait until the entire, 250 page book is complete?

Are you here in the USA as well?

Carol

Big news! I found how we are connected. My line is also descended from Ludwig Karl Agricola, BUT (here's the kicker) I THINK that going back from your direction, you are not descended from his son Johann Friedrich Heinrich, but from Johann's brother, Friedrich Johann. Confusing enough for you? I'm descended from Johann Friedrich Heinrich. I'll update my family tree and make sure you're linked into it so you can see the connection.

Later!

-- Kristine

By the way, in the book I referred to in my last post, Ludwig CARL Agricola is spelled with a "C". I guess that doesn't make the spelling official but that's how it is in print in the book I have.

And ... yes, you are correct about Christian Johann AGRICOLA! His middle name is "Johann" and the birthdate is March 8, 1705 in my book. I have made the appropriate changes to my Family Treemaker software.

Thank you.
Carol

Oh, thank you! This is wonderful news! I would be most grateful for any information you can scan and send me regarding my line of AGRICOLAS! Good luck with move. I'll be patient in the meantime.

Eventually, I will be interested in knowing how we (you and I) are connected.

I have a German book that was written Bernard AGRICOLA in memory of his father Otto Ludwig AGRICOLA. It is a collection of family memories. It is full of valuable information. I need to learn how to scan book and post them as PDF's online so that anyone can read it. My problem is that I cannot read German, only English. I have used translation software to transcribe some pages that I believe to be of particular interest to me. This is a project I will pursue now that I have connect with you!

In the meantime, here is a photograph from 18 years later (1892) of the same family!

Thanks, Carol

Gorgeous photo, and yes, they're all in the book! I've found at least one additional picture, too. A few things show up in the book slightly differently than what you have below, though. I have Ludwig Karl spelled with a K, and his father is listed as Christian Johann Agricola with a birth date of March 8, 1705, not 1704.

I am in the midst of a move right now, but come next week, I should have some time to begin scanning pages relevant to the names you list below and uploading them to Ancestry.com. I'll attach what I find to this email thread first. Should give you LOTS of information. How's that sound?

Here's what I know of my AGRICOLA family!
My great-grandmother was Agnes Elizabeth Caroline AGRICOLA (1871 - 1929). She was born in Kreuznach, Germany.
Her father was Otto Ludwig AGRICOLA (1829-1902). He was born in Gotha, Germany.
His father was Johann Friedrich AGRICOLA (1790-1862). He was born in Ohrdruf, Germany.
His father was Ludwig Carl AGRICOLA (1740-1807).
His father was Christian Sohem AGRICOLA (1704-1774).

Does any of this match up with your family history?

I am aware that there is a book entitled "Agricola Family History" by David V. Agricola. It is out of print and I have been unable to locate it online.

The attached photograph was taken in 1874 and is of Otto Ludwig AGRICOLA and his family. His wife was Caroline Margarithe PERTHES. The oldest daughter is Emmy (Age 8), then in the front, left to right is Martha (Age 4), Ernst (less than 1 year), and my great-grandmother, Agnes (Age 3).

If you go back far enough, yes, the Agricola side of the family hails from Germany. Georgius Agricola, the mineralogist, changed his name from Georg Bauer in the 16th century, as was tradition when someone earned an advanced degree. He was the first Agricola in the family line. I have TONS of history on that side of the family. A distant relative published a book. Are you related to the Agricolas from Germany somehow?

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, Dec. 21, 1939, page 8:
ULYSSES GRANT CHRIST
Ulysses Grant Christ, son of Rev. Levi and Mary Christ, was born April 3, 1870 at Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and after one year of illness departed this life at his home in Minneapolis, Kansas, December 15, 1939, at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 12 days.
In 1877 at the age of 7 years he came with his parents to Kansas where they homesteaded on a farm near Lamar, Kansas. It was there that he spent the greater part of his life, except for a short time spent in Oklahoma during his twenties, where he took a claim.
On April 27, 1905 he married Myrtle D. Pattison. At that time he resided on a farm adjoining his father's homestead which he also farmed for several years. To this union were born seven children, Claretta, Benjamin and Dale Dean of the home, also Mrs. Stella Hunt, Mrs. Lillian Downend, Mrs. Vivian Longbine and Mrs. Della Walker all of Salina, Kansas.
In November 1932 he moved with his family to the vicinity of Minneapolis, Kansas, and spent the last three years of his life in Minneapolis.
He was a quiet, home-loving man, always sacrificing to the needs of his family. He was a patient sufferer, showing a great determination to hold on to life. He was cheerful to the last.
Besides his wife and children he leaves six grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Guhl of Nekoma, Kansas, Mrs. Mary Fyfe of Fredonia, Kansas, and Mrs. Sylvia Schlotz of Marion, Kansas; also one brother Glen Christ of Salina, Kansas and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 at the Methodist church in charge of Rev. Fred Blanding with burial in Highland cemetery.

Christ from Alsace to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois W.Va. and Canada

1. CHARLES1 CHRIST was born about 1850 in Alsace, France, and died after 1900. He married PHILUMENA FRANCES SCHMELZER Bet. 1874 - 1876, daughter of ANSELM SCHMELZER and MARGARETHE KELLER. She was born October 15, 1856 in Logan, Hocking, Ohio, and died October 01, 1904 in Washington, Daviess, Indiana.

Notes for CHARLES CHRIST:
According to family tradition Charles was born in Alsace/Elsass and came to the United States to avoid conscription. His birth date and birth place are not known. In the 1880 census for Corning, Perry, Ohio, he claimed that he was 30 which would indicate that he was born in 1849 or 1850. In that census he also claimed that he was born in Germany. Germany took the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871-1872 so he may have answered the question on the basis of who was currently in power in 1880 and had been for nine years.

There is a ship record for the "City of Antwerp” that arrived at the Port of New York City from Liverpool on July 31, 1871 only 12 days after France declared war on Prussia. It would seem that this ship would have left Liverpool before the actual declaration of War but perhaps war was widely anticipated. If Charles was 21 or 22 in 1871 he would have been a prime candidate for conscription.

Charles Christ’s movements and whereabouts 1871 to 1900 are sketchy but that might be expected of someone employed as a blacksmith for a railroad that was being built. Apparently he was in Shawnee, Perry, Ohio (or at least Minnie was) for the birth of his first child, Charles. In 1880 when the federal census was taken he was in Corning, Perry, Ohio with two young sons, Charles and Pawley (Paul).

From the "History of Perry County, Ohio" by Clement L. Martzolff, published by Ward & Weiland, New Lexington, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio Press of Fred J. Heer, 1902, pages 92 and 93 we learn that Perry County was an active mining area. Shawnee began its existence in 1872, and that Corning was laid out in 1878. Both mines and railroads would need blacksmiths for their operation.

Charles was naturalized Oct. 11, 1879 in Fairfield County and his sponsor was Ambroise Larger who was born at Fellering, Alsace, France and who had Christ kin at Bitschviller-les-Than, another village less than 7 miles away from Fellering in the Thur Valley in Alsace, France. I do not know if or how Charles might be related to these Christs but I would not be surprised if one of these is his native village.

Children of CHARLES CHRIST and PHILUMENA SCHMELZER are:
i.	CHARLES2 CHRIST, b. June 30, 1877, Shawnee, Perry, Ohio; d. after 1928; m. ANNA MARIE WEDDING, Lawrenceville, Illinois; d. after 1928. Living in Coronation, Alberta, Canada in 1926 and owner of the Calgary Hotel in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1928.

ii.	PAUL R. CHRIST, b. August 1879; d. May 09, 1948, Bloomington, Illinois; m. ANNIE MILDRED MCCORMICK, 1915; b. 1877; d. July 08, 1931, Bloomington, Illinois. He worked for Chicago and Alton Railroad.

iii.	CATHERINE CRIST, b. December 05, 1881, Ohio; d. May 03, 1955; m. JOHN W. SCHOLL, October 10, 1904, Washington, Daviess Co., Indiana; b. April 01, 1885; d. August 17, 1935. John W. Scholl owned a grocery store.

iv. WILLLIAM CHRIST, b. July 1884. In 1926 he was reportedly in Danville, Illinois. In the 1948 obit for Paul R. Crist at Bloomington, Illinois, his brother William is listed as a survivor living at Chicago.

v.	JOSEPH CHRIST, b. July 1886. In the 1948 obit for Paul R. Crist at Bloomington, Illinois, his brother William is listed as a survivor living at Chicago and he is listed Joseph of West Virginia (perhaps at Huntington?)

vi.	FRANCIS SYLVESTER CRIST, b. October 1889; d. after. 1930; m. BESSIE MALLEY, about 1908; b. about 1892, Indiana; d. after 1930. In the 1930 census for Huntington, Gideon District, (Ward 7) Cabell, West Virginia he is listed as head of the Head of household, home valued at $5,000, with radio set, age 40 at his last birthday, and age 19 when he first married. He was born in Ohio, his father in Germany, and mother in Ohio. His employment is as a machinist for a railroad shop. In same household is his wife Bessie, 37, both parents born in Indiana.

vii.	JOHN ANTHONY CRIST, b. June 15, 1893, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio; d.
Wm. Christ b. 1884, Ohio>Columbus>Normal, Illinois>Chicago Railroader

I am seeking information on William Christ, b. 8 July 1884 to Charles Christ and Frances Philamena “Minnie” Schmelzer in Ohio. By 1879 (maybe earlier) the family was in Columbus, Ohio. Older siblings include Charles Christ Jr., Paul, Catherine or “Kate.” Younger siblings include Joseph, Frank and John Anthony. This is a railroad family.

In the 1920 census, William is living at Normal, McLean, Illinois employed as a pipe fitter. He is married to Anna, 38 born in Illinois and they have five children, William H., 18; George, 17, Harold 15; Ralph 11 and Jeanette 8. The two oldest boys are also employed at the railroad shop.

I have a 1926 letter that suggests that William is in Danville, Illinois, and a 1948 obituary for his brother Paul R. Christ at Bloomington, Illinois that places him at Chicago. I believe he died in Chicago May 1971 though I do not yet have a copy of the death certificate. Does this sound like your family?

Hi, I found your posting on ancestory.com regarding the christ surname. my name is steve christ and i think you were referencing me and my parents, roger and marie, in your post. below is your posting, can you email me back at stevechrist@ymail.com or call me at 586-246-4841, i'm trying to pick up the family tree again after a long delay.

Susan, Your husband is definitely related to my husband, whose grandfather was Charles Christ, born in August 23,1865. Charles' sister was the woman you mentioned - Magdalena (Lena) born in 1867. Other siblings were Wilhelmina (1859), Marie (1860), John (1863), Clara (1870 - not sure of this), August (1870), and Augusta (Sept 10, 1872). My husband and I found most of this information when we drove to Buffalo - where several of the siblings were born - last year. I would love to "meet" you and exchange information about our respective branches of the Christ family tree.

I also know the parents of Steve, the person who originated this chain of emails. They live not too far from us, and we've had dinner together and been to their house.
Hi, my name is steve christ. i read a post of mine you replied to a long time ago on ancestory.com. i forgot about the postings i was doing on there, and just now came acrossed it on a google search and came across your post.

The Arthur Christ you mention must be my grandfather because he was born on april 1st. Although the wife's name you gave was different from my grandmother's, but i'm pretty sure my grandfather was divorced so perhaps that was his first wife. please call me at 586-246-4841, i would really enjoy and appreciate talking with you about this further. below is your post on ancestory.com:

I believe that your grandfather, Arthur, is related to my husband's line. Arthur, born April 1, 1899 to Charles and Emily Christ, is the nephew of my husband's great grandmother. His great grandmother was Magdelena (Lena) Christ Schenk. Arthur's father, Charles, was Magdelena's brother.

The information that I have about Arthur's wife is minimal - I have her listed as Lucille Bartle. After doing some searching thru the census, I believe that I have found her with her parents and siblings in Michigan.

Looking forward to seeing if this email address still works! Would love to share information with you and vice versa!
Hello. I just found your post on the Christ family from Shamokin PA. Edward Christ was the brother of Samuel Christ who was my Great Grandfather. Samuels son Charles was my Grandfather.

Edward and Samuel's father was a John Christ. Johns father was Jacob Christ who died in the Civil war at Gettysburg. My family back to Samuel spelled it Christ. I have some of Jacobs military documents and it was spelled Christ on some of them.

I do have the family tree on Ancestry. My name is Jennifer Christ.

The family I'm researching is the Charles & Catharine Harter Heid family. They came to America from Baden abt. 1850. Their eldest was b. in NJ abt 1851; the next 3 were b. in PA. One of those was Joseph, b. in 1852. From there, they moved to Clay Twp., Scioto Co. Oh. They were Catholic. The only child I know more about is Henry, b. in OH. in 1859. He was my husband's g-grandfather & migrated to Calhoun Co., IA with his wife, Lena Lober Heid in 1897.

Does this sound like your family?

Gottlieb Christ

I am looking for information on the Christ family. I know Gottlieb came to America in 1911 with his wife Maria and had 2 children Henry and Emily then he married Lorine B.M. and they had 12 children the only names I can find are Esther, Adeline, Lorine, Marie, and Lydia. They lived in Berrien, Michigan. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Shawn

Re: JOHN CHRIST (abt 1857) m. BERTHA I. (b. abt 1869) Shawanno Wisconsin

Not the same Bertha. If it was, she'd have died at the ripe old age of 126, as she was born in 1869 (in Belle Plaine, Shawano County, Wisconsin). We have learned our Bertha Ida's maiden name is KUPSKY and she was the daughter of Herman Richard and Wilhelmina (Koehler) KUPSKY. Her husband was John Arthur CHRIST (1864 - 1935), Wisconsin. Good luck in your searches.

JOHN CHRIST (abt 1857) m. BERTHA I. (b. abt 1869) Shawanno Wisconsin

JOHN CHRIST, b. abt 1857 in Wisconsin, married a BERTHA I. (?) (b. abt 1869). They had:
ARTHUR J. CHRIST, abt 1888
VERONICA B. CHRIST, abt 1891
ALFRED A. CHRIST, abt 1894
CLARENCE F. CHRIST, abt 1897 and
HATTIE M., abt 1904.

We are descended from CLARENCE CHRIST, who married MARJORIE SWEETSER (b. abt 1898) in Wisconsin. They lived in the Shawanno, WI vicinity. (MARJORIE's parents were LYMAN E. SWEETSER (abt 1862) and ADDIE M. EATON of Massachusetts.)

CLARENCE CHRIST started using the last name WILSON in the early 1920s for himself and his family to avoid discrimination against Germans so prevalent at that time. Later, though, we understand he left his family for greener pastures and headed down to the Carolinas where he died in an accident of some type possibly around late 1930s and probably under the name WILSON.

We are anxious to learn anything on CLARENCE and our CHRIST relatives who descend from CLARENCE's siblings. - Mark

Caroline Christ

Caroline Christ married Adam Staab. She lived in Pittsburgh or Allegheny City , PA. They had eight children of whom my grandmother was the last born in 1890. The 1900 Census does not show Caroline and Adam is a widow. Her father was either Michael or Nicholas Christ. Her mother was either Barbara or Anne Barbara. I found a few buried in Minersville Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA. Any help of information will be appreciated.
