Re: John Christen of Harrington, NJ from Bern Switzerland

I have some info on a Christen Family from Bern. My 4th great grandmother was an Elizabeth Christen born Nov.28 1819 in Twann, Bern Switzerland. She married a Johann Gottlieb Hess in Buren Bern and they both ended up in Cresco, Howard Co. Iowa. Elizabeth's parents were Jakob Christen (B.Sep.7 1800 D.Apr.27 1854 Twann) and Elizabeth Seylaz (B.1799 Fribourg Switz.D.Nov.22 1853) Elizabeths siblings are given as: Jakob (1823-1909); Maria (B.1825 (married Rudolf Mauerer); Peter (B.Jul.31 1828) and Rosina (B.Oct. 19 1829)(married a Johannes Streit). Jakob Christen's parents were Christen Christen (1782-1870) and Margaretha Lehnen (1787-1848.) I have more info on siblings of Jakob and earlier generations. My info is 2nd hand but the reference given is to a "Parish and Citizens Register" by a Dr. Robert Oehler. The areas subheaded in this reference is Bern and Reugsaw Switzerland. I found no info on your John of NJ but the families are most likely connected.

Claude and Donald Christen

Hello, I'm trying to find any information that exists on Donald and Claude Christen, both of whom lived in Los Angeles in the 1930s. Claude was born around 1888, probably in Kansas, and had a barbershop on Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles in the 1930s and lived on Coronado street. He's listed in the 1930s census in Los Angeles as Floyd Christen, but his listing in the city directory is Claude E. Christen. Donald Christen, who was his son or stepson or nephew lived with him after 1930 for a number of years. If anyone has any information on either of these men, I would be grateful to hear it.

Thanks

Yes, I have been researching Charley Christen for a few years and finally got lots of quality info from KenNeumann134. Charley and Walter Christen left Iowa together and built farmsteads right across the road from each other in rural Aneta, ND. I've visited one of those farms several years ago. I know Charley and Betsy had several children. I got the impression that Charley's descendents weren't overly interested in ancestry. So it is nice to meet one that is also into research. If you need any help, you can email me direct at steve99man@comcast.net

Wow, Thanks for all this info! It's kind of lot to consume at once though.

-Steven Sherman

Thank you so much Ken. I appreciate all info you come across.
I have been interested in Sven Christen for some time now. He did marry Signe in Wisconsin and their first child Caroline was born there. They then moved to Winnesheik County, Iowa and the rest of the children were born in Iowa. My great grandfather, Sam Christen, Caroline's younger brother, lived and died in Iowa. I was interested in Charley Christen because he settled in Grand Forks County, North Dakota, right across the road from Walter. I have been to the (Walter) farm a few times. I lived in North Dakota for 46 years before I moved to Florida. Thanks again - Steve Rude

Steve, my curiosity got the best of me, and so I checked the migration records for the parishes for Svend and Signe. The clearest record is for Signe, p. 598, folder "Kviteseid 1836-1858", migration records-- she was #86, registering "3/4 43" (3 Apr 1843), "Tjenestepige Signe Bjorgufsdr. Homme" (servant girl), "20 Aar"(20 years old), "do" (ditto, going to "Amerika"). She emigrated earlier than Svend.
Svend's was on p. 388, folder "Sauherad 1827-1850", migration records, year 1846, number 9 for the year, "Svend Christensen Haug", born "1824 14/12" (14 Dec. 1824), "Bsh. 25" (found in a column marked "Logb."-- not sure what that is about-- registry page?), "Amerika" (destination), "Do." (ditto, meaning "3/4 46", date of departure?). Warning-- this record is light and blurry. I missed it the first time through.
This gives a bit more exact information then. They must have met in Wisconsin and married there. The family trees on Ancestry.com agree that Ingeborg Caroline Christen, the first known child, b 31 July 1849, was born in Sun Prairie Township, Dane Co., Wisconsin. I don't see the family there or in all of Dane County in the 1850 census. So I'm wondering about the sources for the birthplace. But I guess Dane County would be good to check for records, if you are interested. Svend and Signe would have gotten married likely between 1846 and 1849.
You might also be interested in the death record of Christen Gundersen, Svend's and Charley Christen's father. He got married the 2nd time Dec. 1860, and by 16 Aug. 1861 he already died at age 68 (b ca 1793) at "Haug" farm. He was a farmer (Gaardmand). (p. 115, folder "Nes in Sauherad 1845-1865", #19 death for year) His widow then emigrated shortly after that (April 1862).
As I hinted, with these Norwegian records you could track your families back for several generations using the records on-line. Perhaps there is a local "Bygdebok" (community history) for Kviteseid or Nes or Sauherad, which can speed up or verify that one is on the right track (they are in Norwegian, but the key parts are simply lists of names and on what farms various families resided). Get on-line with the Telemark Rootsweb message board and see what response you can get.
I trust this is of interest-- Ken Neumann

Re: Sven Christen (-sen Haug)

I didn’t notice until now your question about the relationship of Charley and Walter Christen that you mention. So I checked further in the Norwegian records for signs of his birth, etc. I believe I have figured out his connection to your family, his parents, and emigration record.
It turns out that his 1900 census record is correct, that he did emigrate in 1862, with his mother and a half-brother. You said Charley’s parents were Chris Christen and Gunnild Haug and that somehow he might have been an uncle. That was helpful, for I found in the marriage records of “Sauherad in Sauherad 1842-1866” folder the marriage record of his parents—p. 125-- 30 Dec 1860. It says, “Enkemand og Huusmand Christen Gundersen Houg” (widower and cottager), age 66 (so b ca 1794) from “Nas” (Næs) parish, father being Gunder Christensen Houg, married “Pige og Huusmandsdatter Gunhild Halv[orsdatter] Bagholdt” (unmarried woman and cottager’s daughter), age 28 (b ca 1832), from Saude parish, father being Halvor Halvorsen Sauermo[ ]. The writing at the end of the father’s name is hidden by the binding of the record book.
You will notice the name of the husband here is identical with the name of Svend Christen’s father. Houg farm and Aaraas farm are the same or close by one another, as Charley’s baptism shows below. Christen’s first wife (whom we know as Ingeborg Svendsdatter) must have died by Dec. 1860. Svend’s father marries a young lady 38 years younger than himself and then has a child, the one you know as “Charley Christen”.
His birth and baptism is recorded in the official records folder “Nes in Sauherad 1851-1877”, baptisms, p. 38. Just as the 1900 census says he was born in Nov. 1861, so here his birthday is said to be 23 Nov. 1861. He was baptized 24 Nov. 1861. His name at baptism is “Christen”, son of “Hd.” (“Huusmand”, cottager) “Christen Gundersen og Gunhil Halvorsdatter” at “Houg i Aaraas” farm. So his name was Christen Christensen Houg.
This baptism is also recorded in the parish registry copy, p. 55, folder “Nes in Sauherad 1845-1865”.
Given this information, I was able to find the emigration record (“Utflyttet”) for Charley and whoever went with him. I thought maybe his mother’s record was right, which said they emigrated in 1872, but it turned out Charley’s was right- 1862. In folder “Nes in Sauherad 1851-1877”, p. 200 of migration records, for the year 1862, records #20-22 we find Charley’s mother, “Enken Gunnild Halvorsdatter Houg” (widow Gunnild, etc.), birthday “1833 1/3” (1 March 1833), “til Amerika” (their destination), “1862 5/4” (5 April 1862, the day of “Utstedt Attest.”, emigration registration, I believe). #21 is Charley’s half-brother (a common mother), “Knud Knudsen”, born “1856 6/11” (6 Nov. 1856), and Charley himself is #22, “Christen Christensen”, born just as the baptism indicated, “1861 23/11” (23 Nov. 1861).
You might wonder about the difference in name between “Christen Christensen” and Charley Christen, but you can also understand that he settled with your Svend Christen family, and Svend was a half-brother to him. Charley would then, to be less confusing, take the same surname of Christen that Svend was using (he too was originally a Christensen as well, you recall). “Charley” was probably a name he picked up living in Iowa, a name more comfortable perhaps than Christen Christen.
You might also wonder where Charley’s mother got the “Braaten” name. She must have married a Braaten in the US, and then he too died before the 1900 census. I found an Andres Braaten, 57, married to a Gunnil Braaten, age 47, at Trail Co., Dakota Territory, in 1880 census, with a daughter Ingeborg, 4. Perhaps this was Gunhild’s new marriage.
** You ask my connection with the Christens. I had been studying my Christens (Swiss-German background, not Norwegian) in Stearns County, Minnesota, when I saw the e-mail by a Sharon written in 2000 on the Stearns message board regarding her Norwegian Christen family (your family through Richard Donald Christen, son of Earl Christen, son of Albert Christen, son of Svend Christen). It was such a fascinating search and mystery that I kept researching and trying to find out as much as I could then. I enjoy finding answers to such mysteries and finding missing pieces to the puzzles in people’s lives. Sometimes it even helps some of my own searching. If I find out any more, I’ll let you know. But otherwise, I’ll let you try to search some of the resources to which I’ve pointed. All the best-- Ken Neumann
Thank you so much for your reply. I just joined the Sons of Norway and am having a renewed interest in my mom's family, who were considered early immigrants. When my wife and I go to Norway ( in the next 8 years) I'd like to find the farms in Sauherad and Kvitseid.

Here's a cool story. I did much research on the Christens in the 1990s and I submitted copies to the Norwegian society in Wisconsin. They were very grateful. Then we had the great flood in 1997 and I lost alot of my research. A cousin I've never met, in Iowa, found out I had lost my research. One day I received a big envelope from him in the mail, with all kinds of research papers inside. They all had my name on the bottom corner as researcher. I almost cried. I knew he got it from the Vesterheim. Aren't Norwegians wonderful people.

Walter Christen left Iowa as a young man, with a relative named Charley Christen, who had been living with them since he came to America. Walter and Charley farmsteaded in Grand Forks County, North Dakota, across the road from each other. Some records state that Charley was Walter's uncle. They were almost the same age. I have always wondered if Charley came from Sven's family, or Signe's family. I probably need to check Norway records. I have several old photos of Sven and Signe. I'd love to know your connection with the Christens. How did you get to be so good at this research thing? -- Steve Rude
It’s great to hear from you. I’ve learned in genealogy to be patient for responses. It’s worth the wait usually.
I had to review what happened back in 2006 when I studied this. I don’t think as much was available on-line as now. If you want to know all about the families in Norway, now you can just Google “Digitalarkivet”, and get the website with all the church records on-line (as well as ships lists, censuses, etc.). I checked on your two main persons you know were born in Norway—I find Svend’s baptism on page 163 of the folder listed under Telemark county, folder “Sauherad – 1815-1829,” record #11. It checks out as some people have reported on Ancestry.com’s family trees—Svend Christensen was born 12 Dec. 1824, Sauherad parish, Telemark, Norway, and baptized 26th Dec. The farm was “Aaraas, Naes Annex” (Naes sub-parish, which is where the baptism took place too). Signe Bjorgufsdatter was born 10 June 1823, at Kviteseid parish, Telemark, and baptized 22 June 1823. The record is found on p. 42 of file “Kviteseid in Kviteseid- 1815-1836”. The farm was “Midsund”. The parents were Bjorguf Tarjesen and Ingebor Amundsdatter.
You want to know brothers and sisters. One easy way to get some more names is to check “Family Search” website, go to “Vital Records”, under “Norway”, and check for records in the various parishes that happen to be indexed. For Svend’s siblings batch C425933 has Sanherad records for 1815-1827, and shows at least 3 siblings—1) Kisten Maria Christensdatter- 18 Feb 1818, bapt. 22 Feb.; 2) Gunder Christensen- 8 June 1819; bapt. 13 June; 3) Kirsti Christensdatter- b 26 Jan 1822; bapt. 3 Feb. There are probably more in the records.
For Signe’s brothers and sisters I find even more—using batch C425772 and C425773 for Kviteseid baptisms, I see Tarje Bjorgufsen, bapt. 13 Jan 1811 (father’s name is spelled Targjesen); 2) Aamund Bjorgufsen- bapt. 1 Jan 1814 (father Tarjesen, mother Aanundsdr.); 3) Guldmund (male) Bjorgufsen- bapt. 31 Oct 1819; 4) Gunnild Bjorgufsdr.- bapt. 14 May 1826. Again, there are probably more in the records. You can check the Norwegian records I mentioned where Signe’s baptism was found.
Other useful sources might be the Emigration records in the parishes they left. They show when a family enters or leaves a parish. Check church records for those. Census records seem to indicate they left either Naes or Kviteseid areas in 1843 (1900 census for Signe). You say 1846 at one point. Maybe you have a source for that. Either way there are records which can verify this. As well, the ships passenger lists have some listings, though not usually that early.
If you have a subscription to Ancestry.com, you can access some family trees which have some more detail on the family members, although no more on the Norwegian ancestry—the “Patterson” family tree (owner: vpa32) has more detail on Walter Christen’s family than on the rest of his siblings. The “Nelson / Hansen” tree (owner: pjmulhall) gives Signe and Svend’s parents and even the farm names. For Signe’s mother it mentions her mother was Ingeborg Amundsdr. Midboe.
If you have any further comments or questions, I’d be willing to respond. Especially if you need help with the Norwegian website, let me know. There is a lot of good info there. All the best,
Ken Neumann

It was timely I read your query tonight, for I just wrote a response to a Sharon Christen related to the Sven you mention. She was researching her father Richard Donald Christen (23 Sep 1927-Sep 1974, North Highlands, Sacramento, CA). He was the son of Earl Christen (7 Aug 1897-Feb 1965, IA) and Genevieve Effie (nee Ryan) Christen, 10 Feb 1907- 25 Jun 1996, Forest City, IA.
Earl was the son of Albert Christen, b Jul 1859, WIS., and Letitia, b May 1871, IA.
Finally we get to Sven. I find him in 1860 census, Madison Twp, Winneshiek Co., IA, age 37 (b ca 1823) married to Signa, 37, with children Caroline, 10, and Clarence, 8, both born in WIS, and Bertha, 5, Samuel, 3, and Albert 10/12, born in IA.
If your info is correct, then we know from where both he and his wife originated in Norway (Telemark in 1846-- maybe you or we can figure out the town there; the farm names of Haug, Midsund and Homme should help). Please get back to me, and we can share further on this. See my long note on the family on the Stearns County, MN, Rootsweb message board. It goes into further details.

We too have quite a few names and places in common, although there are many many Christens to sort out and keep straight. You wrote earlier, "I find that I have a Christen Christen of Steffisbury in my family tree b. 1782 d. 1870 m. Margaretha Lehnen 2/14/1800. They had a son, Jakob Christen of Twann b. 1800 m. Elizabeth Seylaz 4,15, 1820. The family's hometown probably was Ruegsau in the Canton of Bern."
I believe the town is "Steffisburg", north of Thun, and perhaps your "Twann" should be "Thun". But Ruegsau is spelled about right, and is east of Bern.
My oldest known Christen, Hans, b 1695, at Heimiswyl, married Christina BRAND from Ruegsau. Some other relatives resided near Ruegsau, such as Sumiswald (SCHUETZ). I wouldn't mind comparing notes to see how close we come to being related. I have also GERBERs from Steffisburg who married into the Christen family.

Much to my surprise I found your response regarding Christen Christen!! He was the son of my great-great-great-great-grandparents.
I am writing about my Swiss family, and am trying to translate a document that is in German!! It's pertaining to Ruegsau, and says the town was in the district of ------ whatever came after the "of" is indecipherable. The paper is dated June 22, 1856 and is proof of the birth of my "Nana" to acquire her residency certificate . She was the daughter of Jacob and Marianne (Loitscher) Christen.

Don't suppose you have any data on a Jacob Friedrich Christen who lived his adult life in Germany but whose absence in any birth/christening records leads me to believe he may not have been born there. He was married in 1896 in Leiselheim, Freiburg, Baden, Germany to Mary Magdalina Schneider. End of data.

Ken Keller
Worthington, OH

I am amazed that our searches come together at so many points but, for all that, take us in different directions.

I, too, am searching for information on the Christens of Toledo (LucasCounty) Ohio. My grandfather, Frederick Christen, immigrated from Germany in 1890 before which he was known as Jacob Friedrich Christen. His father, too, was Jacob Friedrich, but before that there is no information on either Ancestry.com or LDS.

I don't suppose you have any data on this?

Ken Keller
Worthington, OH

Jean de Christains

Hello,

Family history tells of a Count Jean de Christains, a protestant from Geneva Switzerland, and a Captain of the Swiss Guard in Paris before and during the French revolution. He was later an officer in the French army under Napoleon and imprisoned for six months by Napoleon because he was a royalist. He escaped with his wife Suset Brudit de Christains (also of Geneva) and his familiy to the United States via Belgium. They arrived in the United States in 1803 and eventually moved to Pittsburgh, Cinncinatti, Louisville and Jeffersonville Indiana.
The story passed down through the family can be found at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~incccpc/clarkbios/DeChristainsFamil...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I can not find information concerning this family besides what was passed down through the family.

Thank you,
Chris
pioneergenealogy@hotmail.com
