The "Keys" children's mother was indeed named "Nancy".I don't know Which "nancy" but I do know that. Polly Ann Keys{Case} was my grandmother's grandmother. She married D.Elisha Duvall on Jan.1st 1854 in pope Co. My grandma always said that the other twin "Mary Ann" died. I'd like to know where Azariah and Nancy are buried so that I might look for Mary ann.We also don't know where "Polly Ann" was buried. My grandma said that she never knew where she was buried, just grandpa Elisha.{Shady Grove} Thanks, Carla

The Charles A. Chronister of Benton Harbor, MI, that I know about was a brother to my Sarah M. Chronister in PA. Some of the siblings began moving to Michigan when their oldest half-brother, Dixon O. Chronister, moved to Michigan after his service in the Civil War. Dixon's brother, Lewis Wesley Chronister, also moved from PA to MI. The Charles A. Chronister that you are talking about was probably the son or grandson of one of these brothers.

John B.E. Glenn's parents were Johnathan Glenn and Hannah Sabre (Sparks).

Johnathan's parents were Abigail (Rogers) and John Glenn.

John and Abigail had several other children, one of them being Elizabeth who married to a Tucker but he died and then she married his brother, Robert Tucker. Robert and Elizabeth had a daughter, Amanda, who married Sebe Coker. Their son, John B.E. Glenn, is the one who married Nancy Coker (above). So John B.E. and Nancy were 2nd cousins.

Most of Abigail's and John's children married Tucker siblings.

I hope this isn't too confusing.

There is a book, Glenn-Tucker vs Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations, that has within its covers the court proceedings and depositions of the Glenns and Tuckers trying to get their Indian rights. They were denied.

There is another book, Descendants of John Glenn and Abigail Rogers. It has all the census on the Glenn families, plus their lineages and other family info through 1920. It doesn't include Red's siblings families because I didn't want to give out anyone else's private information.

I hope this has helped.

As for the Indian rolls, are you on them? Red said he was just a young boy ... 10 or 11 ... when his mother took them to McAlester where she signed them up on the rolls. That would have been about 1905-06. Her relatives said she had a roll number written on the flap of her purse, but I can't find a record of it anywhere.

When George was killed it is said that he always carried his important papers in his pocket. He didn't trust them to be anywhere. When he was killed all of his papers were supposedly missing from his body.

I'd still like to hear the story about the coin. :)

Lilly was of a religion that some people don't care for. I can't remember if it was Jehovah Witness or what, or that is what I heard. I also heard that she wouldn't let their father see them much. I don't know if that is true or not.

I saw Willene several times. She was a beautiful woman and yes, she lived in Ft. Smith. I think she had 2 sons. I met one of them when her mother died. In fact, I was mowing and caring for the burial plots when I met him at Wister Cemetery. I'm thinking his name was David ???

Where do you live? I just moved back to Wister from Texas. My email address for a short few months will is bkglenn at verson dot net

Red has a daughter still living at Poteau. I know you would probably love talking with her. She's at the nursing home and still alert about the family members she knew/knows.

Write me ... I'd love to see the pictures.

Re: Oscar Glenn line

Okay, I don't have all of my genealogy with me. I've moved to TX and it is all still in TX, but let's see if I can reply to this with at least a little knowledge.

Red Glenn had siblings but I can't remember all their names. He was the oldest. There was Albert, Albert, Sis, Doll. Red, my grandfather, was born October 10, 1895 Choctaw Nation (Oklahoma). Their father was George Glenn who died in 1923 because he was crossing a railroad track in Wister and a train hit his wagon and killed him. He was married to Lena Chronister who had sisters Minta and ?. Minta married Philmon Ray. Their son was also named Philmon.

Lena married second to Ben Powers.

Lena and George are buried in the Wister Cemetery. I heard they raised some of their grandchildren. I was thinking it was Sonny and Patsy.

George had a brother, John Glenn, and sisters Ollie and Mollie. Ollie married an Inman. I can't remember who Ollie married.

George's parents were Nancy (Coker) and John B.E. Glenn. John B.E. was born in MO, as was George. Nancy was his second wife and she produced for him besides these 4 children 5 children by two other husbands. Nancy is buried in Allen Oklahoma. John was married before Nancy but his wife died and that's when he married Nancy.

It gets complicated after that. :D :D :D

To be continued. :D

Oscar Glenn line

I certainly mixed up posts there. It was a jmiller that is Dollie's descendent and he wrote to you. So I'll try to post him and tell him the story.

Oscar Glenn, my grandfather, would be Red's brother. Younger? Older? I don't remember without looking. I've certainly heard the name Uncle Red Glenn from my mother. Though she only kept up with Aunt Sis,Red and Oscar's sister, until she died sometime around the mid 70's. Aunt Sis had a daughter named Willene that married a Sharp, in Ft. Smith. I don't know if she had any boys.

As far as I remember,my mother says that Lena Chronister Glenn missed the deadline to be included on the Choctaw Indian roles. It was something she cried about until she died.

Oscar was about 20 years older then my grandmother, Olive Redfern. So I'm rather young (50ish) to have a grandfather born that long ago. Olive was his second wife,(Lilly was his first) and Olive was the one that bore his four children. George Olen Glenn was the firstborn son. He died near the age of two. When I asked my grandmother why he died...she said something about choking on cornbread. Somehow I think there is more to the story. My mother came next. Then Nolen aka Sonny, then Patricia aka Patty.

Nolen died in 2002 in Ft. Oscar was my grandfather's sister if I'm thinking of the correct Dolly. My grandfather was Wilburn P. ("Wib" or "Red") Glenn. Red's mother was Lena (Chronister) Glenn.

Hi Mandy,

Your grandmother, Dollie, was my mother's (Thelma Mae Glenn-Oscar's first daughter) aunt. We used to go visit in Arkoma, her sister, Lena aka Aunt Sis, quite often. Aunt Sis would tell us the story about the "double-headed nickle"that kept Dollie and her children fed during the depression days.

Are you familiar with that story?

Debra,

Thanks for pointing that out, you are right, I called your book of marriages and the ancestry databases "transcriptions" and that is not entirely accurate in either case. The point I was making was that when you don't look at the original record, you are counting on someone else to be perfect when they "transcribe" (meaning write down) what they see, whether they do a complete "transcription" (copying everything on the record verbatim) or only an "abstract" (copying down selected facts from the original record).

The point that I would like to make is that an awful lot of what you see in print and online is not reality, including the subscription service databases.

For example...

Ancestry.com has a database entitled: "York County, Pennsylvania, 1801-53; Trinity Reformed Church" In this database, you will find an Adam Chronister, father; an Elizabeth Chronister, mother; and a child named Rebecca Ann Chronister being baptized. There is no date for any of these people.

When you click on the link to get information about the source for this database, here is what you get: "Lineages, Inc., comp., York County, Pennsylvania, 1801-53; Trinity Reformed Church [database online], Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2000. Original Data: Transcribed from LDS Family History Library microfilm copies of church records for this locality. For more information, see the Family History Library Catalog".

So what does all of THAT mean?! It's nothing but a legal progression of money-making entities who bought rights from each other, who don't necessarily know where their information came from. Thus, ancestry's "source" has little to do with the actual original source of the records.

As directed by ancestry, I checked the Family History online library catalog by putting in: "York, Pennsylvania" and clicking on: "church records". Many church records were listed for York, but this one was not. Gee, thanks!

Fortunately, I checked the collection of various state records on microfilm at the DAR Library here in D.C. I found "Church Records of the First (Trinity) Reformed Church at York, PA, 1744-1853, copied by William J. Hinke, 1942". That title, in itself, gives you more information than what the ancestry database revealed. First of all, it tells you that ancestry's database is apparently not complete if theirs begins from 1801. It also tells you that this is going to be a transcription or abstract, not microfilm of original records. It also gives you the author, which the "source" at ancestry leaves out entirely.

On the microfilm at the DAR Library were typewritten pages, apparently done by Hinke. Mr. Hinke probably did a complete transcription, not just an abstract, because he gave the sponsors' names and other information found in the church books, and even gave the page numbers from the original church book.

On page 209 of Hinke's work, which he says is page 202 of the original church book, is: "Adam Chronister and Elizabeth, parents of Rebecca Ann, baptized Hampton, Adams County. Sponsor: Margaret Schaefer". This particular record is not dated, but since the church book was apparently transcribed verbatim, and baptisms were listed chronologically, it was easy to date it. The record listed before the Chronister baptism was a baptism dated 16 January 1835, and the record after it was a baptism dated 21 January 1835. Therefore, the Chronister baptism took place sometime between those two dates.

It is interesting to note that the ancestry database called it a York County record, when Hampton is actually in Adams County. This church was originally formed in Lancaster County, in the area that later became York County in 1748, in the part which later became Adams County in 1800. Thus, none of this database at ancestry has anything to do with York County, because from 1801 forward, when ancestry's database begins, this church was in Adams County!

The next logical step is to see which library or historical society or other record repository holds the original church books, and find out if the actual pages have been microfilmed or digitized. Hinke could have made errors just like me and you and everyone else. Also, there are other early baptisms in this same church with the last names "Kronicker" and "Klopinger". Could these also be Chronisters? Maybe the handwriting was poor. It would be good to look at it ourselves.

As for what I posted previously about what we know about Matthias Chronister of PA/NC...a lot of that changed when I consulted the original records that the published sources referred to. A lot of mistakes were made in those published abstracts/transcriptions. A lot more original sources need to be looked at.

When I put my ongoing research notes and compilation of facts and sources of information online, and it gets immediately copied into various online pedigrees without a source (which it did), where I do not have access to correct it later as new information is found, then I am unwittingly participating in the spread of bad information, and that is NOT what I want to do.

It should be remembered that message board postings are the property of the person who posted it, and cannot be published verbatim without permission from the author.

Peggy Reeves

Peggy, et al.
The information I posted is not a volume of transcripted marriage records it is instead, ABSTRACTED as I noted. I also gave the source for obtaining a copy of the actual record.

There is a big difference in transcription and abstraction. In a transcription everything in the record is copied exactly as found; in an abstraction only the information judged important by the abstractor is pulled out of the original. Sometimes there is additional information that can serve as a clue in the actual record.

It is very possible that the numeral 7 was misread for a 2, which is the reason it is essential for every researcher to follow through and get a copy of the actual marriage record. I agree; No one should take information from anyone without checking it against the original.

>>According to the published abstracts of Pope Co., AR Marriages by McLane and Glazner, 1967:

Nickel, William, 21, to Paredine Chronister, 20, 1 Jan 1852, by John M. Bewley, MG, Book C:73.<<
Debra,

The date of that marriage in your book (which is a transcription of records) conflicts with the date that is on ancestry.com (which is also a transcription of records). Ancestry.com gives a date of 1 January 1857. Which one is right? No way to know if either of them are correct without ordering a copy of the original record, as you suggested.

This highlights the problem with putting this kind of information online--and the reason why I don't do it any more. People are too willing to copy everything they see into their databases, not ever questioning the accuracy of what they find.

Peggy Reeves

Matthias Chronister of PA and NC

From time to time, it becomes necessary to re-evaluate the evidence when upon analysis facts no longer fit the generally accepted conclusion. Debra Overbey and I believe that now is the time to look closely at the evidence of Matthias Cronister and his wife, Elisabetha. Are we really able to name their children? Do we really know when he died? What do we know and what do we surmise? Can we get closer to historical truth by looking at the facts again?

Fact #1 - Matthias served during the French and Indian War, appearing on a muster roll in Carlisle (Cumberland Co., PA) dated 27 June 1758, listed as: “Matt’s Granister”. [Pennsylvania Archives, Series 5, vol 1, p. 224]

Fact #2 - Matthias is mentioned several times in the Lower Bermudian Church records but there is no relationship stated in those records between him and immigrant Johannes. [Translation of Church Book, Lutheran and Reformed Union Congregation, Lower Bermudian, Adams County, Pennsylvania by Edna Albert ca. 1934, part of the collection of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania]

Fact #3 - Matthias and wife Elisabetha baptized a child in PA: “Anna Maria Cranister of Matheis (Lutheran) and Elizabeth (Catholic), born 7 A.M., September 6, 1761, baptized October 18, 1761, at Carlisle, on the Bermudian.” [York County , Pennsylvania Church Records of the 18th Century by Marlene Strawser Bates and F. Edward Wright] The record of this same event as recorded in the Lower Bermudian Church record books show the sponsors to be Lorentz Detter son of Nicol, and Anna Maria Cranester. [same source as fact #2]

Fact #4 - Matthias is in the tax list of 1763 in West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, PA, as: “Mathew Cronister”. He does not appear in the Cumberland County tax list transcriptions for 1762 or 1764. [Tax Lists – Cumberland County, PA, 1750, 1751, 1752, 1753, 1762, 1763, 1764 by Merri Lou Scribner Schaumann, page 52]

Fact #5 - Matthias received a crown grant for land in NC in 1773. [Land Patent, No. 621-381, p. 209, to Mathias Cronister, 300 acres Tryon Co., NC, 25 Jan 1773. North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, NC]

Fact #6 - Matthius and Elisabeth sold land to Michael Buff in 1787. His signature appears to be “Matthes Karonister” The middle initial is difficult to read; Elisabeth used the Roman numeral “X” as her mark over the clerk’s “Elisabeth Cronister.” [Lincoln Co., NC Real Estate Conveyances, 1785-1793, Bk. 3:274, 275, Matthias Cronister and his wife, Elisabeth, to Michael Buff, 300 acres, 15 Oct 1787. North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, NC]

Fact #7 - There is no Matthias Chronister as head of household in the 1790 NC Census. Only one Chronister household is recorded in NC in the 1790 census, and Adam is the head of that household. The household consists of three adults—two males and one female. No other names are given, no ages, and no relationships. [National Archives microfilm M-637, roll #7, First Census of the United States, North Carolina, Lincoln Co., p. 128]

Fact #8 - Matthias Cronister was granted 320 acres of land in Washington County, TN, on 12 July 1794 [Earliest Tennessee Land Records and Earliest Tennessee Land History, by Irene M. Griffey, p. 152]

Some of these facts were not known by those who developed the early theories about this family. Matthias disappeared from the PA records and resurfaced in NC. It was presumed that the Adam in the 1790 NC census was the son of Matthias, because Matthias was the only adult Chronister that anyone could document being in NC. The two other adults living with him in 1790 were presumed to be his aging parents. This is a HUGE assumption to make, considering the number of other possibilities that exist.

The 1790 census does not list each member of the household by name, nor does it give specific age ranges. There are two males and one female over the age of 16 in the one and only Chronister household listed, with Adam as head of that household. It is well-known that many households did not get enumerated at all in that first census in NC.

The early theory of Matthias and Elisabetha having five children named James, William, Anna Maria, Adam, and Eve, needs to be re-evaluated in light of the documentation that has been found in recent years. We would like to examine and discuss the documentation for these children to see if the known facts agree with the early theory. Perhaps there are others who have found additional documentation that they might be willing to share and discuss. Please look at this list of facts with an unbiased approach and give your observations online so that all Chronister researchers may benefit.

Peggy Reeves

A New Look at the Past Using Professionalism and Respect

The Chronister Research Board and Mail List is primarily inactive. In the past I have tried to jumpstart the list with discussions and postings of transcriptions and abstracts of original records. On several occasions this has escalated to name calling and disrespect between list members. If we as researchers are concerned about finding the keys to our family history, we should be willing to work together without descending to this level. I believe that I am able to work with all researchers, even those with whom I have basic disagreements about interpretation of records and methods of research. I assume that all others on this list are able to do the same. I invite all persons interested in Chronister (var. sp.) research to participate in board and list exchanges and combine efforts to solve our family puzzles.

Peggy Reeves and I have been comparing notes on the Southern line of the Chronister Family. In doing so, we realized that we know much more about Matthias Cronister than previously thought. It is our hope that other researchers of this line will join us in evaluating this information and reevaluating earlier theories about the family structure of Matthias and Elisabetha Cronister of Lincoln Co., NC.

As list and board manager, I am asking that all comments posted to the message boards at RootsWeb, Ancestry and the Chronister mail list at Ancestry be professional and objective. This and any following posts by Peg and I are intended only to encourage further research into our Chronister lineage and will not contain any negative personal remarks directed to any other researcher. I expect the same of all other posters. Should the discussion become abusive or include reflections of a personal nature, I will unsubscribe the poster of such messages, no exceptions.

Your participation on this board and associated mail list is requested.

Debra Blackard Overbey, debrablackard@centurytel.net
Chronister List Manager
Re: Looking for GGGrandmother Perdine Chronister

Since I speak the language of the Arkansas Hill Country from where Paradine grew to adulthood, I propose that "Paradine" may well have been pronounced as "Perdine." Sometimes you can hear the echoes of your ancestors'speech patterns by comparing the spellings of their names in contemporary correspondence and records.

When I posted this message back in Jan., 2009 I misspelled the given name. It is Perdine. I have also found other info from family that Perdine may have been of Native American blood. She married a Nichols. I have not been able to find any birth, marriage or even census records as proof. I do have a photo of her head stone with dates but no birth location. I am not finding anything on her daughter Sarah K Nichols until after her marriage to James David Christian Daily my GGrandfather. All the info I have is from Pope County, Arkansas. Thank you for any help

Sorry, I should also mention she was born April 10, 1903 in Arkansas (around Rector, supposedly). And she died June 29th 1999 in Farmington, Missouri. I forget when she married my grandfather, but that piece of information is easy to track down.

Thanks,
Carly

Looking for Bessie Chronister who married Virgil Shelby Chronister

I cannot find my grandmother anywhere with her maiden name. I can find her death record (with her married name), and I can find her marriage to my grandfather (Virgil Shelby Chronister), but I cannot find her by her maiden name, so therefore I cannot find her parents, grandparents, etc. It's been a dead end for me so far, and I was wondering if anyone else knew any information about her, or how I could go about finding this information out? Her name is (according to her children) Sarah Elizabeth Parrish. But like I said, the only records I can find of her are under her married given name of Bessie Chronister. If you can help, I would really appriciate it. Oh, her parents names are supposed to be Lonnie(Lonzo, Elonzo) Parrish and Julie(Julia) A. Ray. Thanks in advance.

Carly
