Solving Chumney etc Genealogy issues in early VA through DNA testing

Dear Chumney, Chumley, Chumbley, Cholmondeley cousins,

My name is Eddie Chumney. I am the owner of the website on Chumney / Chumley / Chumbley / Cholmondeley family research located at:

http://www.hebroots.com/chumney.html

http://www.hebroots.com/marrcens.html

http://www.hebroots.com/chumney_researchers.html

Many have benefitted from this website over the years.

I have had two main goals of the website:

1) Primarly trace Chumney / Chumley / Chumbley / Cholmondeley family history from the 1700's through 1850 as people can trace their own family history through the US Census from 1850 to connect to the early colonialists.

Most family members originally in VA, NC and SC left these areas and went to KY, TN, TX, AL among other states. My desire is to link particular families to migration areas to help other researchers

2) Keep a list of Chumney / Chumley / Chumbley / Cholmondeley family researchers and their descendents to help researchers connect with each other

While my website information is very comprehensive and detailed for the research years 1996 - 2000, I have been lax the last 10 years keeping current with new researchers. However, this can be easily recovered from the rootsweb, genealogy and other forums which deal with these surnames given that postings to the Chumley forum is not that large from year to year.

Part of my reason for suspending updating new information since 2000 was because I was not able to resolve how various Chumley etc lines were related in the late 1700's. This caused me to lose some of my research enthusiasm. However, I have learned that this mystery can be solved through DNA.

There is now a Chumney / Chumley / Chumbley / Cholmondeley and related spellings DNA website showing results of those who have been tested.

It is located at:

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/cholmondeley/results

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/cholmondeley/pats

From only a small testing sample, we have been able to resolve some major questions that researchers have had for years.

Originally, I thought that ALL Chumney, Chumley, Chumbley etc families in Colonial America were related going back to England. However, DNA results have shown that this is not so.

1) We have determined that the Robert Chumley who married Betsy Ford who lives in Giles, VA in the late 1700's is related to John Chumlea and Margaret Shipe lines.

However this line is NOT related to John Chumley and Martha Lockett family of the late 1700's family line.

2) We have determined that John Chumney who married Elizabeth Andrews in NC in the last 1700's whose family moved to AL are NOT related to the Robert Chumley and Betsy Ford lines or the John Chumley and Martha Lockett lines.

3) A descendent of John Chumley and Martha Lockett has been tested and confirms that this line is NOT related to Robert Chumley and Betsy Ford of Giles, VA OR John Chumney and Elizabeth Andrews in NC.

I have only known of this DNA website for several weeks. I have decided to get my DNA tested to make the existing results stronger.

From my research the MAIN line that has not been tested yet is the family line of Richard Chumley / Cholmondeley who married Grace Milam in 1756 in Goochland county who later moved to Halifax and Pittsylvania counties in VA in the 1780's and 1790's.

This line also includes Daniel Chumley who moved to Wilson County and I believe John Chumley who moved to San Augustine, TX area.

I believe that this family line is connected to an existing line that has already been tested. But, we need to prove it.

Recently, an individual connected to the Pittsylvania Chumley's have agreed to get tested.

But, we need others who are willing to help.

In order to help some current outstanding issues and strengthen our existing findings, we need volunteers for DNA testing in the following areas:

1) Volunteers related to Richard Chumley / Grace Milam and those related to the Chumley's living in Halifax and Pittsylvania counties

2) Volunteers related to John Chumley / Delilah Russell who moved from VA to San Augustine County, TX

3) Volunteers related to William Chumley ancestors who lived in Nottoway, Lunenberg and Pulaski counties, VA.

4) Volunteers related to John Chumley and Elizabeth Dickens from Prince Edward county, VA

Of course, the more volunteers tested the better. It only gives more strength to our current findings.

William Craig Lawrence is the admin of the DNA website. If you have further questions, please contact him at:

[wclaurence AT aol.com]

Will you volunteer and help yourself and other Chumney / Chumley / Chumbley / Chumlea / Cholmondeley family researchers?

In case you are not familiar with DNA testing, we need MALE volunteers and the family surname DNA testing is done through the Y-Chromo male line ... father to son to son etc.

Order a test kit today!

Thank you for your help!

Eddie Chumney (related to John Chumley and Martha Lockett of Amelia and Prince Edward county, VA in the late 1700's)

[HebraicHeriage AT yahoo.com]

P.S. If you are not listed in my family researchers website

http://www.hebroots.com/chumney_researchers.html

and would like to be then please post on this forum your name, e-mail address and family genealogy info.

Also if you have more census and marriage info that is not on the existing website at:

http://www.hebroots.com/marrcens.html

Please also post your results to this forum so that I and others have access to it
John A. Chumney of Henry Co, AL Parents Determined

John A. Chumney of Henry County, Alabama, who married Milly Watts on August 3, 1825 and lived in Henry County until his death on November 10, 1855, is the forefather of a few hundred descendants living primarily in southeastern Alabama, central Florida, and west Texas. Recently, I discovered that John A. Chumney joined the army of the United States of America in Kingston Tennessee on November 6, 1817, and on his enlistment form he indicated he was born in Roan [Rowan] County, North Carolina.

The only Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley couple that is in Rowan County, North Carolina records during the timeframe of John A. Chumney’s birth is John and Elizabeth (Andrews) Chumney who married in Rowan County, North Carolina on December 13, 1787.

Conclusion: John and Elizabeth (Andrews) Chumney of Rowan County, North Carolina were John A. Chumney’s parents.

Follow the link below for more on John A. Chumney.
http://henrycountyalabama.wetpaint.com/page/Chumney%2C+John+....

Another Breakthrough from Y-DNA Testing

Craig Laurence recently announced on the Chumley Roots-Web message board the following breakthrough from Y-DNA testing.

==============================================
A descendant of Robert Chumley, who was born c1786 in VA and was married to Elizabeth “Betsy” Ford, and a descendant of John Chumlea, who was born in 1781 in VA and was married to Margaret Shipe, have both had their DNA tested through Family Tree DNA and have a Y-DNA match of 36/37 markers. It is quite possible that these two gentlemen, mentioned above, were bothers.

The results of these DNA tests are available to view on the Cholmondeley DNA Surname Group webpages at: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/cholmondeley/

==============================================
The above breakthrough also narrows my Chumney-family search and may narrow yours, too. How? I previously thought my Chumney line might connect to the Claiborne County, TN Chumley’s, but since my Y-DNA results do not match those of the descendant of Robert Chumley (patriarch of the Claiborne County Chumley’s), I can now spend my time looking elsewhere.

Any additional Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley/Chumlea Y-DNA test results could produce another breakthrough, but what would really help to clear things up for me and potentially break the whole Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley/Chumlea research game wide open would be for a proven male descendant of Francis Chumley/Chumbley of Pittsylvania Co., VA to have his Y-DNA tested, or better yet, a proven male descendant of Robert Chumley/Chumbley and Fanny Sadler of Prince Edward Co., VA to have his Y-DNA tested.

Y-DNA testing is relatively cheap and painless -- just a few swabs inside your cheek. Follow this link for more details -> https://www.familytreedna.com/faq/. Fairly often, FamilyTreeDNA has a sale on the test kit which makes the cost even lower.

Jim Chumney
Re: John Chumney in Gadsden Co., FL in 1824

Teresa,

I don’t know who Robert H. Chumney’s mother was, but I theorize she was Eunice Burns.

The slim evidence is:

In the 1930 census Robert H. Chumney and his father A. C. Chumney are living with A. C.’s father William T. Chumney in Crosby precinct, Houston County, Alabama. A. C.’s marital status is recorded as “D” for divorced. Robert H. Chumney is four months old.

The Florida Divorce index has A. C. Chumbley and Eunice Burns divorcing in Jackson County, Florida in 1930. The divorce index has Chumbley not Chumney, but Chumney is frequently misspelled in official records.

Crosby, Houston County, Alabama is very near the Florida state line and Jackson County.

It’s possible A. C. Chumney’s marriage is recorded in the Houston County, Alabama courthouse. For some reason, Ancestry.com doesn’t include all the Houston County marriages. For example, my grandparents’ and parents’ marriage certificates are at the courthouse but not on Ancestry.

Jim Chumney
Dixell,

It's great to hear from you! I had given up hope of making contact with GGG-Uncle John Tyler Chumney's branch of our Chumney family tree. From the writeup in the book "Stewart County History," it appears that John Tyler and his children were very successful in which case I expect (hope) someone wrote a biography of John Tyler and his exploits. If so, I'd love to read it. I'd also love to see other pictures of John Tyler and his family. As I indicated in my earlier posting, my ultimate goal is to determine the ancestry of our common forefather, John A. Chumney, but along the way, I greatly enjoy learning about my extended Chumney family.

Did John Tyler Chumney ever speak or write of his father, mother, or other ancestors? I have done lots of research on John A. Chumney and will gladly share it as postings on this message board, direct e-mail, or mail you a CD. Let me know what you prefer. Unfortunately, none of my research concretely identifies John A. Chumney's parents, and so, my search continues.

Thanks for making my day.

Best regards,
Jim Chumney

BINGO! I think I can help you. John Tyler Chumney is my
GGrandfather, called Grand Pa Chumney in my household. He is the father of John Charles Chumney, my grandfather. His
wives were Georgia Hobbs and Serenia(probably Serena, since this is my mother's name)Tabitha Nicholson on 15 March 1875.
He and Serenia are buried at Hopewell Cemetary, just north of Teague. He had 2 children by his first wife, William Thomas Chumney(called Little Willie) & Sarah Virginia Chumney(called Jennie). Then he fathered 10 other children with Serenia:Aurelia Gertrude, John Charles*,Tabitha Carl,Sammis Onis, James Richard, Millie Serenia, Gordon, Bessie, Epsie, and Atelia. After Serenia died, he lived out his life with my grandfather and grandmother, of whom I have pictures.

Dixell Hewell Wheat
Averygooddoc@knology.net I'm trying to remember Carl's email as I'm writing this. Maybe a "d" omitted in the gooddoc. Carl is a researcher for all the Knox County, TN Burnett families. I have the publication of his works in the December 2006 edition of TN ancestors which pertains to my family (Merica Burnett who m. Samuel McCormick 1825). Samuel and Merica's McCormick daughters married a few Fritts sons who were Roane County, TN residents. ANYWAY, I think he (Carl) might be your best chance if your Burnetts came from Knox County as mine did. I believe his Burnett ancestor publications spanned 3 issues of TN ancestors with the December 2006 being the last one. Hope this helps.

John Chumney in Gadsden Co., FL in 1824

Thanks to a tip from the manager of the Bartow, Florida Genealogical Library, I recently located a John Chumney in a list of petit jurors in Gadsden County, Florida on April 5, 1824. The source is the book, “Gadsden, A Florida County in Word and Picture” by Miles Kenan Womack, Jr. that was published in 1976. The author identifies his original source as Gadsden County Court Minute Book No. One. This is strange because the Gadsden County courthouse burned down on November 12, 1849, and all the records were allegedly lost.

Due to the proximity of Gadsden County, Florida to Henry County, Alabama, I suspect this John Chumney is my GGGGrandfather John A. Chumney who married Milly Watts in Henry County, Alabama on August 3, 1825. If anyone has a copy of the original Gadsden County Minute Book One, please let me know. I'd like to follow up on this exciting and surprising new lead.

Regards,
Jim Chumney

Hi Carrie. I've been reading some of your posts dating back many years. I was emailing a researcher the past couple days who says there is going to be Knox County Burnett history in the December TN ancestors publication. He says that Matilda belongs to a group of Burnetts that lived on the far western border of Knox County. These include Elizabeth "Betsy" who married William Early, Maria who married Samuel Starkey, Merica who married Samuel McCormack, Matilda who married William Chumley, and Griffin W Burnett. He believes they are the children of Judah Burnett who is NOT the widow, Judith, of Jeremiah Burnett. He says the two, Judith and Judah are totally different people. In the 1830 census, Judah Burnett, head, lives next to Samuel McCormack. Merica & Samuel are my ancestors. I have an address given me to by him to acquire TN ancestors if you'd like it.

Descendents of John Tyler Chumney, I Need Your Help

Descendents or GGGreat Uncle John Tyler Chumney, I’ve hit a brick wall and need your help.

John Tyler Chumney and my GGGrandfather James C. Chumney were brothers. They and their three other brothers (Robert H., William T., and Richard E.) were the sons of John A. Chumney and Milly Watts who married on August 3, 1825 in Henry County, Alabama.

I have a lot of information on our common forefather, John A. Chumney, and I have a couple of theories about his parentage, but I do not have the “smoking gun” evidence that I need to concretely tie us to the rest of the Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley family tree. I’m hoping one of you has that key piece of evidence that I need.

From an article in the “History of Stewart County Georgia, VII” by Sara Robertson Dixon and A.H. Clark, John Tyler Chumney moved to Georgia after the Civil War and married Georgia Ann Dobbs Dowd. He and Georgia Ann had two children:

1. Jennie

2. William Thomas Chumney (no doubt named after John Tyler’s brother who disappeared (probably died) during the Civil War.

After Georgia Ann’s death, John Tyler Chumney married Serena Tabitha Nicholson and moved to Freestone County, Texas. He and Serena had ten children:

1. Aurelia

2. John

3. Tabitha

4. Linda

5. James

6. Millie

7. Gordon

8. Epsie

9. Bessie

10. Atelia

The information in the “History of Stewart County Georgia” article, which also includes a wonderful picture of John Tyler Chumney, was provided by Mrs. J.L. Jackson, Jr. of Wichita Falls, Texas who was John Tyler Chumney’s granddaughter. I’ve substantiated most of the information in the article through census and other original records.

If you’re one of John Tyler Chumney’s descendents, I’m hoping you will share information from an old family Bible, family folklore, newspaper article, original records, etc. with me and help me break through my frustrating brick wall.

Regards,
Jim Chumney
Re: chumney in al. or fla.

Cheryl,

I suspect your grandfather, A. Chumney, is descended from John A. Chumney who married Milly Watts in Henry County, Alabama in 1825.

John A. Chumney had five sons:

(1) Robert (died circa 1859)
(2) James C. (my great great grandfather)
(3) Richard E.
(4) William (apparently died in the Civil War)
(5) John Tyler

Your grandfather, A. Chumney, is not descended from James C. Chumney because I've thoroughly researched that line and there are no A. Chumney's who could be him. That leaves either Richard E. or John Tyler as your great great grandfather.

I'm confident your grandfather will be listed in the 1920 US Census and, perhaps, the 1910 US Census. The next time that I have access to the Soundex Index for those censuses, I'll take a look and will let you know.

Jim Chumney
Phoenix, AZ

John A. Chumney Captain in Alabama State Militia 1835

John A. Chumney was commissioned a captain in the Alabama State Militia on July 21, 1835. His unit was the 5th division, 11th brigade, 25th regiment. The election return from Columbia, Henry County, Alabama was transmitted by Colonel J. I. McClendon and approved by Vice Attaché McKissick. Henry County, election managers were Howell Hodges and Wm Armstrong.

[Source: “Alabama State Militiamen 1820-1865,” boardman Robert T. Clyde, microfilm F326 .M56 M4 Roll 1, No. 2].

Since the second Creek Indian War was fought during 1836-1837, I figured John A. Chumney must have served in that war. However, I could not find him in the "Index to compiled service records of volunteer soldiers who served during the Creek War in organizations from the State of Alabama." [Microfilm M-244 A-J]

If anyone has information on the 25th Alabama Regiment's participation in the second Creek Indian War, please speak up.

Regards,
Jim Chumney
Phoenix, AZ
GGGGrandson of John A. Chumney
