The link between Edward and his father Robert can be found in the Meare(Somerset)parish records where Edwards' baptism is recorded on 25th Dec 1827. A copy of this entry and numerous other Churches' (alias Churchouse) records can be viewed on a website posted by Colin Rayner (just type colin rayner into google and it should come up).
I do not know if you are aware but Don & Jackie Churches (in Texas) have been researching the family name for some years and already have quite extensive information about the Michigan Churches.
