Hi Barbara,

I am Hannah, daughter of Sally Churchman and grandaughter of Noreen (who I sadly never met as she died in '76).

Noreen had four children. William (Billy), Sally, Robin and Angela. She lived in London for most of her life, I think. Sally still lives in London, England. Billy and Robin moved to New Zealand. Billy sadly died about 10 years ago. Angela settled in Australia. I am the only child of Sally. Billy had two boys and Robin had four boys. Angela never had children.

I am also trying to find out more about the family. I believe I have some photos at home of John and Florence and also Wallace. Recently I have been going through them all with my mother.

Please do get in touch! It would be really interesting to fill in some of the pieces of the puzzle!

All the best to you for the new year!

Hannah

Hi Ian,
Thank you for your reply. I realise that I didn't give much info, and since my post, I haven't been able to find a link between the Wrights of Norwich with the Churchman family. I have never been able to find what led my gt-gt-gt-grandfather, Thomas H. Wright (1778-1859) to move from Norwich to Brighton about 1804. However, on the 1851 census a woman named Matilda Churchman born in Surrey about 1832 was visiting the Wrights in Brighton!! I'm still convinced there's an earlier connection somewhere. Perhaps the Wrights originated in Sussex before moving to Norwich! Thanks again. Merry Christmas!

Dave

I am afraid Dave there are several Churchman families in East Anglia. My Churchman relatives come from one village where there appears to be two separate families - or we can not trace them back to a single ancestor!
If you get more information then we can try and help.
Ian

Henry Churchman Obit & other info

Decatur Daily Republican, Decatur IL, 18 Dec 1885, pg. 6

Henry Churchman, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Decatur, who has been ill for several weeks, died of old age last evening at 8 o'clock at his home at 952 North Morgan street, in the 76th year of his age. The deceased was a native of Lancaster, Pa, where he was born March 17, 1810. For a time he lived at Wooster, Ohio. In November 1833, he married Elizabeth Shenneman who with six children survive him. In 1850 Mr. Churchman located in Decatur. He served Decatur township as constable for 33 years, and he was one of the most faithful and industrious of officers, conscientious and upright in all his acts. He was a member of the Christian church and of the Masonic fraternity. The funeral will take place from the family residence at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Pinkerton officiating. He will be buried with Masonic honors.
**********************
There was also an obit in the Saturday Herald, 26 Dec 1885. According to this obit, he moved to Wayne County, Ohio in 1830 and married Elizabeth Shimmerman on Nov. 22, 1833.
**********************
Mrs. Churchman's brother, Isaac from Columbia City, Ind. died during a visit with his sister in Decatur in May 1885. This obit spelled his last name as Shinneman. She also had a sister in Springfield Ill. One article reported her name as Mrs. B. Thompson and another called her Mrs. Thomas.
***********************
The IL State Death Index says the date of Henry's death was 18 Dec 1888. The newspaper obit proves this is an error. According to findagrave.com, Henry and Elizabeth are both buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Decatur, IL.

There are many historial newspapers of Decatur IL on Ancestry.com. I will be glad to look for other obits or information if needed. Happy hunting. - Pam

CHURCHMAN of East Anglia

I'm searching for a link with my Wright family of Norwich. First, I found Jeannie Churchman Wright, a descendant of this family, born in Brighton, Sussex in 1854. Then I found Thomas Churchman Wright born in Norwich in 1806. This leads me to believe that Churchman may have been the maiden name of an ancestor probably in the 1700's. Can anyone help me, please?

Kind regards, Dave

Bill, Hope you are still out there. I'm John Churchman and have traced my Churchman roots to James Churchman b: 1809 in Triplow, Cambridgeshire. I believe James to be your William's younger brother. James' line immigrated to the US via Canada to Michigan in 1886.
I believe the parents of James and William to be William Churchman and Elizabeth Todd, married in Cambridgeshire 30 Mar 1802. More to do here.

I have some papers and a couple of unnamed photos that were in a secret compartment of a second-hand trunk bought in England in 1913. They were given to my family because there are Churchmans in it but I don't believe these Churchmans are a part of our family tree. The names on some of the papers include James John Churchman who married Mary Ann Tilliston (unsure of the spelling) on August 18, 1845 in Middlesex, England and Richard Churchman (widower) who married Sarah Persons (usure of spelling and she was a widow) on July 18, 1858 in Surrey, England. Both James and Richard have John Churchman listed as their father (in the case of James it's John James Churchman). If these names fit into your family tree, I would like to get these papers and photos to you...

Mary CHURCHMAN

Hi All,

I have been looking for info on a lady by the name of Mary Cheesman. c1815(Or so I believe)
Frimley Surrey areas

There are possibly many variations on her name, being churchman/Cheesman/Cheeseman

I have found many things on familysearch, rootsweb, etc etc etc. Which has been very helpful.

I'll tell you what I know of her so far then hopefully someone may be able to help fill in the blanks.

I know she married a man named John TOUGH FINCH dob 1812.
They had a child, Christopher 1832.

John was sent to Australia as a convict on board the Calcutta II in 1837. Once pardoned he had a large family in Australia - that's where I fit in. I know as much as possible about John and his family so I need no further info there.

Mary and child were left behind. I believe she had another child named James in 1844, I know nothing of a spouse at that time.
I believe she was declared widowed (even though John Tough Finch was not dead)and remarried in 1862 to a man named William Watts, but can find nothing to confirm that this is the same Mary.

What I would really like to know is what happened to Mary CHURCHMAN/CHEESMAN when she was left behind in Frimley Surrey in 1837. Somebody out there in genealogy world has to be related to this lady, and I desperately seek your help.

If anyone can help me with this that would be absolutely wonderful.

Thank you so much.
Sally Archer
Sydney Australia.
sally@didges.com.au
ALBERT RALPH CHURCHMAN IS THE SON OF J. DELLA CHURCHMAN AND THE STEPSON OF WILLIAM D JENNINGS. THIS ALBERT RALPH WOULD HAVE BEEN BORN ABOUT 1897. 1900 CENSUS SHOWS WILL, JD, AB, TE, AR, T. TE, AR, T ARE CHURCHMAN'S. DELLA WAS BORN APPX 1876 IN TEXAS ACCORDING TO THE CENSUS. I THINK WILLIAM AND J.DELLA ARE BURIED IN BLANCO, TX. THERE WAS ONLY A YEAR OR TWO BETWEEN THE LAST CHILD BORN CHURCHMAN AND THE FIRST ONE BORN JENNINGS. ANY CONNECTION?
Thanks for the note, Jackie. I was helping a neighbor, who was adopted, to locate his birth mother. By luck or good investigating we FOUND her (in her 80's now), and they have been reuinited. Answered a LOT of questions he had about why he had been put up for adoption.

Having a child out of wedlock in that area (Palestine) in those days was a major problem.

Any Churchman history with a tie to Poland

Hi -

I'm looking for anyone with information regarding Churchman's who have a historical tie with Poland.

I'm working on some Y DNA research and although my surname and history is from Poland I matched with a difference of 2 for 37 markers with a Churchman from Switzerland. I've been reading about the reformation and how individuals emigrated to Poland to seek refuge and thought there might be a historical tie to a Churchman in Poland from the 1600's.

Thanks, Mike

Churchman in Cambridgeshire England

I am researching my CHURCHMAN ancestors in Cambridgeshire England, and would like to contact any others who are doing so as well. I have traced my family back to:

William CHURCHMAN (b 1806) who married Mary MILLER (b1806) in 1828 in Ickleton, CAM. They had (I think):

Eleanor (b c1831)
Margaret Ann (b c1835)
Martha (b c1837)
William (b c1839)
Joseph (b c1843)
Charles (b c1843)

(Some of those dates may be off a year or two, based on the vagaries of ages on various census returns.)

I am descended from Joseph. It appears that most/all of these CHURCHMANs left the area - mostly moving to the London area in the 1860s - most appearing in the 1861 census in Cambridgeshire, but appearing in the 1871 census in and around London/Middlesex.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be connected to these folks, or might know more about them.

Thanks in anticipation.

Bill Churchman
churchmanw@houston.rr.com
