I'd estimate birth in 1874 (+/- 1 year).

I estimated it based on the following:
1st child Joseph Pochop, born 17-Jan-1872
2nd child is Jiri Pochop
3rd child Mary Matilda Pochop, born 26-Aug-1876

Thank you for the information. It of course opens new questions:
1.	Why is not his name given on the monuments of WWI victims in Loucky?
A.: Perhaps since no relatives were living in Loucky after 1918.
2.	There were five types of cavalry in Austrian army (Kürassiere, Dragoner, Husaren, Ulanen, Chevauxlegers). Which type was his regiment?
A.: Most probably Dragoner: 6. Mährisches Dragoner-Regiment (Albrecht, Prinz von Preussen).
3.	How could anybody (mis)use identity of Austrian officer?
A.: Family had to ask for birth certificates in parish office in Loucky prior to their emigration. Since it was quite a huge family, the priest was not able to allocate correctly sons of Anna Pochopova (i.e. their records in registers) and made such a mistake.

And now to your question: The respective archive is Central Military Archive in Praha (Vojenský ústřední archiv, Sokolovská 136, 186 00 Praha 8-Karlín). There is collection “Vojenské kmenové listy“ (Military qualification cards) that contains data of both officers and soldiers from years 1750-1910. The employees of the archive are willing to answer e-mail question but it is necessary to know the year of birth. Please try to assess this year and I will ask the archive. But don’t be too optimistic: the years 1865 to 1879 are accessible with problems.
Ferdinand,

I now have the obituary of Anna Chyba Pochop published in an April 1935 issue of the Citizen Patriot (of Atwood, KS).

It contains this paragraph:
"In 1870 she was united in marriage to Geo. Pochop who preceded her in death in 1890. To this union nine children were born, two of them who died in infancy and George, next to the oldest son, who was serving as First Lieutenant in the Austrian-Hungarian army of the 6th Cavalry Regiment and in 1914, with his regiment, was called to war and laid down his life in the battlefield."

That gives a little more information the family had regarding a son "George" (Jiri). Perhaps your hypothesis is correct that Josef used his brother Jiri's identification to come to the US, since Jiri remained in the army.

Is there any way to verify that a Jiri Pochop, son of Jiri Pochop & Anna Chyba, was in that unit in the Austrian-Hungarian army?

Two sons of Jakub and Antonie Chyba emigrated to Crete, Nebraska:
(1) Antonin, b. May 31, 1874, emigrated 1901.
(2) Frantisek, b. Sep. 21, 1867, emigrated 1907

Mary, your query took on another life. I apologize for us switching the focus, but maybe we can bring it back. See my reply about the marriage of Anna Chyba and Georg Pochop. Notice who the witness is -- Jakub Chyba! However, since the year is 1871, it doesn't seem likely that it is your Jakub who was born in 1826. I don't know if the witnesses were of the older generation, or if they were contemporaries of the bride and groom. Your Jakub would have been only 45, so if witnesses tended to be older, this could be your Jakub. If witnesses were the same generation as the bride and groom, then maybe he was the nephew of your Jakub.

I have to go look at the map and see where your villages are, too.

Here is some information that might be useful to you.

Hajny - There is a family that settled in Deweese, Clay Co, NE area. My source (Deweese Centennial Book) says their ancestor was James Hajny born in Prague on 15-Oct-1861. This doesn't seem to match what you are looking for.

Melichar - Another family in Clay Co, NE area. The original ancestor was Rudolph Melichar born in Zdarec near Tisnov.

Kundysek - According to the Rawlins Co KS History book, Frank F. Kundysek was born 2-Feb-1870 in Nihov, emigrated to Montreal Canada for a few months, then moved to the US, eventually settling in Rawlins Co. Mary Julie Juran was born 21-May-1874 in Nihov and came to the US with her mother Carolina Juran and her brother John and they settled in Omaha NE. Frank and Mary were married 5-Sep-1896. Frank's parents Frank and Mary Kundeysek and other family members can also be found on various records in Rawlins Co KS, so they came to the US at some point.

Chleborad - There is information in the Rawlins Co History book about this family, but I don't have the information close at hand right now.

Chmelicek - I don't recognize that name in Rawlins Co KS History. Could they have changed the name to "Micek"? There is a family named Micek that came from Malisan.

All of the above surnames have married into my family tree (including Micek).

I am interested in history of village Nihov (about 10 km from Dolni Loucky). I know (mainly from internet sources) that following families emigrated to US:
1.	to Rawlins Co. : Chleborad, Chmelicek, Juran, Kundysek
2.	to Nebraska: Hajny, Klima, Veleba. (I have only indirrect indications that Frank Hejtmanek in P.O. Diller, Jefferson Co. was also from Nihov)
3.	to various locations in US: Fichtl, Hamrik, Jasek, Knoflicek, Melichar

Moreover, I know (from direct testimonies) two families (Marek, Sochor) that emigrated a bit later, but I have no trace of them in US.
I do not think that your hypothesis is very probable since:
1.	given names were always very stable in the Czech countries, they were even better fixed than surnames!
2.	Austria did not take part in any war in the respective period; the WWI is the only exception.

I prefer other two hypotheses:
1.	Josef used Jiri`s identity paper when traveled to US
2.	Josef traveled by another ship
Thanks for the information.

Yes, I believe many of the Moravian settlers in Rawlins County KS came from southern Moravia villages, including Ujezd, Dolni & Horni Loucky, Nova Ves, Kundraticich and Znojmo.

My "Vap" ancestors also came from Horni & Dolni Loucky and I know some of the "Vap" family from Dolni Loucky also settled in Clay County NE.

I have collected genealogy information about many of the Moravian families that are in Rawlins County, as many of my ancestors have married into the other Moravian families. I am happy to discuss them further if you'd like.
Thanks.

Here is what the Rawlins County History Book says:
"Anna Chyba Pochop was born November 1, 1848 in Moravia. Anna and George Pochop were married in Moravia and their family were all born there. Their children were Joseph, George, Mary, Frances, Rudolph, Amelia, Peter, Felix and Frank. After the loss of her husband, Anna came to America in the early 1900's.....
....Son George was in the Army and he stayed in Europe. He later died of wounds suffered in the war. Felix and Frank passed away as children in Europe."

Since we know Jiri changed his name to Joseph when he came to the US, this "George that died of wounds suffered in the war" is confusing. Perhaps it was a son named Joseph that died, and so when Jiri came to the US, he chose the name Joseph to honor his fallen brother. That is just some speculation on my part.

I've sent some queries to family members to try to clear up the George & Joseph confusion. I'll let you know if I find out anything else.

Hello cousin. Thanks for the update.

Most of that information (Tisnov & Carolina) came from her Kansas death certificate (the information on it was supplied by her son Rudolph).

The Rawlins County History Book had the information about George and the war, with information supplied by descendants.

On the ship list of the Konigin Luise arriving 19-Nov-1901 at Ellis Island in New York, it lists:
Anna - age 53
Marie - daughter age 25
Amalie - daughter age 18
Peter - son age 15
Jiri - son age 29
Marie - (Jiri's wife - Marie Pester) age 30
Marie - (Jiri's daughter) age 3
Klahide - (Jiri's daughter) age 0

(we know Anna's daughter Frances & son Rudolph came over on earlier ships).

However, "Jiri" used the name Joseph when he came to the US. So I can't find any reference to the son named George. Do you know where the error might be in her sons Joseph & George?

-Kevin

My wife is descendant of Martin Chyba. He was grandfather of Anna Chyba (Pochop). I have several small corrections to your data:
1. Anna Chyba was born in Nihov, house nro. 6 (source vital registers of parish Brezi), not in Tisnov.
2. Mother of Anna Chyba was Klara (not Karolina).
3. Anna Chyba and Jiri Pochop married on Jan. 10, 1871.
4. Jiri Pochop Jr. (son of Jiri and Anna Pochop) could not die in war in 90's. There was no war in Austria in 90's and moreover, he arrived to New York on Nov 19, 1901 together with his mother Anna Chyba Pochop.

Best regards,
Ferdinand Dobes, Brno, Czech Republic

I've got an Anna Chyba born 11-Nov-1848 in Tisnov, Moravia (~20 miles NE of Budisov).

Married Jiri "George" Pochop about 1871. He passed away about 1890-1895 in Moravia. When most of her children came over to Rawlins Co KS (1898-1905 or so), she came with them. Her death certificate in 1935 gives her parents as Frank & Caroline Chyba.

Does that connect with anyone? Maybe Frank & Jacub were brothers?

I have info from the Plattsmouth cemetary on hard copy. I will send you what I have. My email is Gemwtch@aol.com.
