I am researching sitterson of that county! I have the last family member as James Sitterson died around 1749. The people I have talked to that have researched more than myself said it may actually be a variation of sitterson...citizen! I have alot of information on all of mine except Rowenna Sitterson born 1868 in chowan county and married a George K. Howall. Have you seen this in passing? Thanks and please keep in touch.

Sorry I took so long to reply. I hope you are still here...

I'm not sure if the spelling variations are of the same family. The story I have heard is that George Citizen's family were the slaves of a family named Leger around Church Point, Louisiana. Went they were freed, George (or his father) refused to take the Leger name. Instead he took the name Citizen to assert that he was a Citizen of the United States.

Citizen family of NC-1790's

I'm wondering if my Sittison (Sitterson) family of Perquiman County NC in the 1790's was actually a misspelling of Citizen. The 1790 census had:
Isaac Sitterson 1-1-5-0-0
Thomas Sitterson 1-3-2-0-0
Samuel Sitterson 1-0-2-1-0
Joseph Sitterson 1-1-5-0-0

Ann Sitteson married Richard Hatfield in Perquimans County NC in 1789.
Any ideas?

any info yet?

I got some old papers from my aunt and went through them with my grandmother today. Here's what she said: the Lesime she remembers was the son of "nonc Joe-Jah" (forgive the spelling, I'm trying to use phonics; she doesn't know many of the real names). Nonc Joe-Jah and her father, William, (you would have heard of him as "nonc Waht" were brothers. Also brothers were: "nonc B" and "nonc dahl" (Joseph)---all four were Citizen's. Lesime also had a brother named Eli who married Beatrice Bellard and had a daughter Shirley in 1941. Let me know if this coincides with your info. If it does; we're about 4th cousins. You may contact me directly at -kalmel@centurytel.net-.
