Their name was spelled in a variety of ways on different records making the search more difficult.

If you have any info on these Cla(a)s(s)ens, I would love to hear about it!

Jenny

Georg Claassen from Prussia in 1794

Hello,

I am looking to find out more about a 4*great grandfather of mine called Georg Classsen. A link to his profile is here:
http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/13617801/person/-18203227?p...

Now if the link doesn't work I'd like to say he was born in Prussia in or around 1794 and came to London, England from Rotterdam in 1826, his first wife followed in 1827 but sadly died and after settling he married for a second time to an Eleanor Tindal from Hammersmith.

He had a number of children from both marriages and I am descended from one of his sons, Richard William Classen, 1843-1920 who apparently lived in the UK throughout his life. There is little information we can find about either of his other children, although we have made contact with one from his earlier marriage who is now in New Zealand!

I am keen to know more about where Georg Claassen, whose father may have been called Abraham) originated in order to see if it is possible to go back further down this line, and at the moment the best information I think we can get go on would be to find his birthplace. I know a bit about European history and Prussian is history is particularly complex and as it covered many peoples and covered parts of many modern day countries, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Russia (well Kalingrad, formerly Konigsberg).

Would anyone be able to advise on the best place to start looking? Would there be anything left in modern day Germany to start from? I know his first wife was I think a Dutch speaker so from that would it be safe to assume he was Dutch too or was there friendlier relations at that time? I have also and probablI am unsure as to wheard rumours of a mennonite link - is there a mennonite organisation that would be able to help?

I lived in Paso Robles from June 1960 to September 1964. My late dad, Jack Kendall, was a master saddlemaker. When we lived in Paso Robles, he worked for The Roundup, the local western shop, which was about 2 blocks from the bridge on 13th St. When we first moved there, Carl Taylor owned it, but by September 1960 he has sold out to Howard Clausen or Classen. He and his wife, Shirley, owned a nice house east of Paso Robles. I remember there were a couple of times that my parents and I drove out to their house, but I had to stay in the car. My dad and I went dove hunting on Howard's property, but Howard was not the kind of person to socialize with the hired help. He died in the summer of 1964 as a result of a firearms accident. I am not sure, but I believe he was related to the family that owend the Mercantile.

Oscar's brother, Gus Claassen, was my grandfather. Gus lived in Selma (not Salinas) just outside of Fresno. He was a pharmacist/proprietor of Selma Drug in Selma, and used to visit his relatives in Paso Robles, where the Mercantile was the Claassen family business down there. I've got six brothers and two sisters, and except for my brother Richard who is a Carmelite priest, we all have at least two children, so we've multiplied. Sorry for the late reply.
Hi,
I realize that this is an old post, but my grandfather was Adolph Claassen. He went to idaho after marrying my grandmother, from Paso Robles, mary jane kiler (see kiler canyon) Adolph had 8 children, one of them was my mother. My mothers only surviving brother Harry, who lived in Grants Pass Oregon, died about 15 years ago, and he had at least one son. His wife Linda is still living. My mother said that when she was small they used to sleep upstairs in the store in Paso. The family considered themselves to be German because they were from Prussia, which is now (post world war 2) split between germany and poland.
Hello, I am also researching this family. My Grandfather was a cousin to Martin, and lived with his family for a while after he came from Germany in 1913. I believe that Martin was born in Pea Ridge, Adams County, IL although the family did move to Missouri sometime after 1910. I have his father and mother's (Dierk Claassen and Bretje Post) marriage cert, and the names of their parents. I would love to compare and share information with you!

K Claassen

Can you give more information on your John Claassen??
My Grandmother was, Reenstine Etta Johanna Claassen she was baptized in the church ( I think it was the Reformed Church in Gross Midlum, Germany in 1868. Her parents were Heyo Janssen Claassen (born 1840 Bedecaspel, Germany died 1904 in or near Gross Midlum, Germany) and Sarah Cornelia Harrenstien (born 1842 in Germany or Holland, died 1916 in Pomeroy, Iowa).
Heyo had a brother John ( born between 1835 and 1860), who came to the USA (either Iowa or Missouri) before 1891 and was married twice, I have his wives listed as Louise and Roelpke. His children may have been Eielt, Reenste, Ludwig and Hilk.
I also have a John Claassen(born between 1880 and 1886 in Iowa) living with my Grandparents (Reenstine (Claassen) and Henricus Krull) in Clark County, South Dakota in 1900. He was also living near them in Pleasant Valley Township, Hughes County, South Dakota in 1920, his wife was Lena (born about 1889 in Iowa) and a son Luverne J. (born about 1919 in Iowa).
In 1930 he and Lena are in Valley Township, Hughes County, SD with 3 children, Lawrence(I think)(born 1919 in Iowa), Loraine (born about 1912 in Iowa) and Johnis(born about 1927 in South Dakota).
My Aunt said this last John was a cousin of my grandmother, I am not sure just where he fits in.
Heyo's parents were Eielt Emme J Classen and Reenste Lammen Janssen Claassen I have no birth or death dates for them, though I am sure they were born in either the extreme northwestern part of Germay or in Holland, and may have died there or may have came to USA.
Other syblings of Heyo could be--
Claas Claassen died probable in Germany
Ellje Etta Claassen died probably in Germany married a ??? Wilms
Elska Claassen married Harm Finkenburg
Luppe Claassen born about 1842 Germany
Emme J Claassen born 15 Oct 1849 died 11 Jan 1926 South Dakota
Jantje Claassen born 10 Apr 1853 died 1913 ?Germany married Edo Finkenburg
Any help on the above people would sure be appreciated.
The Claassen-family we researched came from the Schleswig-Holstein area of Germany and we believe that they had close connectios with the Menonites from West Prusia. During the period 1680 to about 1725 members of my ancestors emigrated to Holland from where they dispersed as members of the VOC to the Americas, Rusia and South Africa. A book on the Claassen-family in South Africa was published in 2001 also giving a report on the Claassens (Clauszen) of the Dithmarschen-area staying at Delve. My GGGGgrandparent, Claus Clauszen moved from Delve to Holland and from there to South Africa in 1920 as employee of the VOC.
As far as I know the Claassens originaly came from Denmark/North Germany. We would like to confirm this statement and this could only be done if the dates of the movement of Tom's ancestors could be verified. I would rather say that the dike workers came from Germany. Tom, where can I obtain the book you refer to.I believe that there is also a book on the Menonite Claassens that I would like to get. Could some one please advise me where to get it. My e-mail address is claassen@mweb.co.za. Postal address is Box 8293, Centurion 0046, South Africa. Skype address: nicclaassen.

I am searching for information regarding my great-grandmother. As far as I know, she was from the Visquard area of Ostfriensland. After she married Garbrand Ubben Jurrens, the emigrated to the United States in 1894. The eventually settled in George, Iowa. I know nothing about German information other than she was born in April 1970. Any information you may have would be most helpful. Thanks!
