Jon,
I am glad the info has been of assistance to you. I am sorry it has taken me so long to get the documents posted. I was certain I had them scanned onto the memory card with the others, but I did not. Had to locate them in the cedar chest. They are on the card now and posted. We fussed at Mom for never throwing anything away, but are so glad now that she didn't.
Unfortunately, we do not have any pictures of William H.H. or Mary Jane. Would love to have them, but alas, unless someone else in the family has them somewhere that I've not heard of, they must be gone forever.
I will be posting pictures of my grandfather Bob and his brother Bart as well as my grandmother Mamie and her sister Lillian. As stated in their stories, Bob married Mamie and Bart married Lillian. Their children are double cousins and except for their parents, their ancestry is exactly the same.
Please keep me infomed if you find a picture of either William, Mary Jane, Leonard, or Emiline.
Keep in touch.

Kay

There is definitely a Cora Lee Castleberry in our family tree, however, her birthdate was 15 August 1866, and she died 15 January 1902. She could not be your birth mother if you are 13. It must be another Cora Castleberry. I'm sorry not to be of more help. Good luck in your search.

Morning Kay

Just wanted to touch base with you again and thanks for added the photos of Robert Claiborne and his family. I have added them to my tree as well. You dont happen to have any photos of William H. H. and Mary Jane do you, or any of their other children? Also, did you happen to find that receipt you mentioned?

I also found someone on here that came up on my search that has a locked tree that has a picture of William H. H. Of course without seeing the actual photo, I dont know what it is of since some folks use all sorts of things and label it as a "portrait". I have contacted him to see if he could share his info.

Thanks again and you have been a huge help!

Jon

Yes, I did talk with Erin.

The story came from my grandfather, Bob Claiborne, and was repeated by Aunt Lillian (widow of Bart Claiborne) many times. As I recall, Aunt Lilly and Uncle Bart lived nearby at the time and actually heard Mary Jane's screams. She had gotten into some sort of packing box on her front porch and poured the lamp oil over herself and lit it.

The information regarding the burial costs, etc. came from receipts we found while cleaning out my mother's, (Clarabell) home in Walters, OK, after she moved to a retirement center in Lawton, OK. I still have the receipts, and believe I made copies that can also be posted.

I will get those postings done as soon as possible for you.

Kay

Really appreciate it.

Have also been talking to Erin, who is also related to us through the Claiborne line and she is the one that informed me that she got her info from you. Wanted to ask you, where did you get your info from regarding Mary Jane and her killing herself by setting herself on fire, etc? Also the details of funeral expenses and items. Was all that passed down from family?

Thanks again and look forward to seeing the pictures!
Jon

You are quite welcome as far as any info on the Dawes is concerned. Most folks do not understand the requirements to have been included in the Dawes Roll. It was a division of the land held in common by the Cherokee Nation. Therefore one had to be & had been residing there to share in that common asset of the Nation. That fact had to be backed up or doccumented by being on the census. Obviously if they weren't living there they would not be on the census. The Dawes background is not known/understood by many. Particularly those whose families were not enrolled & involved in it. There are so many family stories about the "whys" of their families not being on it that lack the true reasons. Assumtions by later generations? Stories to cover up the fact that they didn't actually know the why? These things get twisted with time & the retelling of something they heard many years ago, maybe even when they were small & get stories mixed up etc. Ever play the game of "telephone" or "gossip"? where one person tells someone something & they pass it on & on &on etc. When it gets back to the original teller it's so garbled & changed so as to be nearly if not completely different. That's the way family stories are. But even more so because of the time intervals between the telling & retelling. I wish I'd payed more attention to some of the stories my Grandparents & their generation told when I was younger. I can only remember bits & pieces from 50+ years ago.

I do have some photographs, a few. I am very busy this week, but wil try to post some for you next week.

Did you see the post from moytoy1730. It cleared up why Mary Jane's name never appeared on the Dawes Rolls. See below:
"What Nan neglected to say was. That in order to be on the Dawes rolls. A person had to be living within the Cherokee Nation in Indian territory & (unless a minor child) be on the 1880 &/or 1890 census. It would appear your family never lived in Indian Territory so they will not show on the Dawes. There were no other "rolls" taken in the "old" Cherokee Nation (Tenn.)to sign or not after the Trail of Tears in 1839. So the family story of her not "signing" any roll. Is just that, a family story, as there were no rolls taken to sign or not."

I have Nola Irene Claborne listed in the family genenology from 1985. I, too, would love to find more information also about the Claiborne family. We live in Oklaoma and have my whole life. There were several Claiborne's in Cotton County, OK, where Bob and Bart moved after leaving Denton, County, TX. Thank you for your response.

Kay Preston

Thank you so very much for the information. I was definitely not aware. That definitely makes sense since they moved from Tennessee to Denton, County, TX, and not into Indian Territory. Wish my uncle had had that information when he was searching for her name on the rolls back when I was a child. Obviously, no one bothered to inform him of that through any of the government agencies he was using in his attempts to research.
Kay

Thanks so much for the info! There have always been stories on my mother's father side that someone in the family was Cherokee but nobody could ever put a finger on it. We are decended from John Frank Claiborne and Cora Castlebery's daughter Nola Irene Claiborne. She married Arthur Marion Nickell and their son was Malco Lee Nickell. Malco Lee Nickell is my mother's father and my Grandfather.

There are several Claiborne's buried at that Shiloh Cemetery in Denton, TX. Several of which I have found on the Find A Grave website. John Frank and Cora's footstone is definately not old by the looks of it and had to have been created recent past. Do you happen to know who might have did it? I emailed someone in Denton Chamber of Commerce and asked about the cemetery and they really didnt have any answers for me.

Also wanted to ask you if you had any photos of anyone on the Claiborne line? That would be awesome if you did!

Thanks again for the info and hopefully we can share some more history from our family.

Jon Rousseaux

Don't you find it a little odd that after almost 20 years of marriage and eight children, Mary Jane's family would suddenly decide that they couldn't take it any more and kidnapped her new born twins? 1882 wasn't the 'dark ages' and kidnapping...by anyone...was a punishable crime.
I'm not quite sure of what you mean by, "she never signed the rolls due to social pressures...". No one was going door-to-door asking people to sign an actual roll. An application had to be made and legal documents provided. Family stories that state that Grandpa/grandma/auntie etc. never signed the rolls because they were scared, ashamed, hiding, etc., are just that...family stories...with no basis in fact. You'll find this and similar stories all over the internet used by people as an excuse for why they can't prove that they are Indian.
Reference: 1870, 1880 census, Dist 7 & 2, Smith & Trousdale Co. Tennessee, and 1900 census, Denton Co, TX Prec. 4. Family geneology: "Decendents of William Henry Harrison Claiborne and Mary Jane Nicholas".

If this is the same John Frank Claiborne,
John Frank Claiborne is the oldest brother of my grandfather William Burford 'Bob' Claiborne. John Frank was born 9 Sept., 1865, in Tennessee (probably Smith Co.) and died 28 April, 1925. Our family records show he was married to Cora Lee Castleberry, born 15 August, 1866. She died 15 January, 1902. Both John Frank and Cora are buried in Shiloh Cemetery near Denton, TX.
John Frank was the son of William H. H. and Mary Jane Nicholas (various spellings). William and Mary Jane's children were: John Frank, Josephine 'Josie', Dora, Nettie, Walter Claybrook 'Bart', William "Will", James M., Robert Burford 'Bob', *Bedford Forest 'Pat"(had a *twin who died), Jake, Lula, and Mattie. One child, not the twin*, is unaccounted for and probably is buried either in Tennessee or in Dallas County, TX. In the 1900 Denton County, TX, census, Mary Jane stated that she was the mother of fourteen children with nine living at that time.

*Bedford Forest 'Pat's' son, J.B., related this story as told to him by his father. Shortly after Pat and his twin were born in 1882, they were kidnapped by Mary Jane's Indian relatives. It seems that they were still unhappy that she had married a white man, and kidnapping the babies was their retaliation for that act. However, both infants contracted pneumonia and were returned to the parents when they were six or eight weeks old. Pat recovered from the illness, but his twin died and is buried in Tennessee.

I have no knowledge of Cora's ethnicity, but Mary Jane was Cherokee, born in Tennessee. We have no records (Daws roll numbers, etc.), to verify this, but my grandfather and mother always said that she never signed the rolls due to social pressures at the time. Both my grandfather, mother and two uncles, Ray and Fred, all bore strong Indian pysical characteristics.

Our records show John Frank and Cora had seven children: Mary Elizabeth 'Mae', Roxie, Sam, Beulah, Edna, Nola Irene and Jim T.

I hope this is helpful to you. If you would like to contact me further, I would be very happy to give you any information I might have.

Kay Preston

Info request on John Frank Claiborne and his wife Cora (Castleberry)

Info handed down from generations says that someone on my mothers side of the family was a full blood Cherokee indian. From what I have found from posts from distant relatives on rootsweb.com, everyone seems to believe that John Frank Claiborne's wife, Cora Lee happens to be the indian, but we currently cannot find any proof of that. If Castleberry was Cora's last name, some of the census reports show her to be from Illinois. Was it possible that during the Trail of Tears she and her family passed through Illinois and called it home before moving down to southern Oklahoma where others have posted that she was later from?

If anyone has any info on either Cora Lee Castleberry or John Frank Claiborne it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Jon Rousseaux

William Claiborne's Parents

According to the Genealogies of Virginia Families from Tyler's Quarterly Historical, William Claiborne's parents were Edmund Cleborne(abt 1556 - abt 1590) and Grace Bellingham (abt 1558 - abt 1594). This source also lists a brother Thomas, who married Frances Lowther. The description goes on to report that the controversy between young William and Calvert, Lord of Baltimore, stems from Calvert vying for young Frances Lowther's hand at the same time as William's older brother Thomas. It further attributes William's ties to Virginia to his mother's side. Is it possible that Edmund Cleborne had a brother "Thomas" (family name) and that is the "Thomas" that is sometimes listed as "William Claiborne's" father, because he raised/adopted young William after his parents Edmund and Grace died in 1594?

I am descended from T.N. Claiborne and Mary Sedwick through Guy's sister, Mary Elizabeth Claiborne b, Va 1862, who married William Boyer in Holt County, MO in 1880. They were my great-grandparents. Are you a part of this family, or did you just happen on the pictures? Do the pictures include images of people in this family? I am most interested in any information about the children of T.N.Claiborne and would love to make contact. Thank you for sharing your discovery. You can contact me directly at hmboyer@vermontel.net. I hope to hear from you.

Best

Heath Boyer
Windham, VT

Correction: Wills of George Ravenscroft Claiborne 1834, son John Alexander Claiborne 1857Tennessee

John Alexander Claiborne (grandfather of my husband J.Lyle Claiborne) was the son of Alexander Herbert Claiborne, who was the son of George Ravenscroft Claiborne.
Jonathan Clayton Claiborne and James Armstrong Claiborne were also the sons of George Ravenscroft Claiborne.
I have been informed that Algernon Sidney Claiborne, who witnessed the bond made by Alexander 1834 after the 1833 death of his father George R., is not the son of George Ravenscroft Claiborne but his nephew. Algernon was the son of Devereaux Jarrat Claiborne, Sr. of Brunswick Co. Virginia. I have learned much since my early research.
My apologies for the confusing way the information was delivered.
And thanks to the ones who pointed out the errors.
I do have the will of Alexander Herbert Claiborne, who died while on a trip to Arkansas Oct 1857.
I have been negligent in keeping up with my posts.
Barbara Tynes Claiborne

Just a slight correction. It should be James A Claiborne, not John A. I know that this is just a typo, but I wanted to make the change so there is no confusion. James A Claiborne married Fanny Claiborne.

Re: Algernon Sidney, Devereaux Jarratt sons of George R. Claiboren

Dorman rarely goofs and perhaps you should follow his excellent footnotes for support of his work. These Claiborne genealogies can be confusing without reading the actual deeds etc., or the reference sources offered.
1. Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne (1785-1871) had 5 wives. His first wife,Sallie W. Jones, bore him a son named after him in 1810 and Algernon Sidney in 1813. In 1816 his son D.J.(Jr) died and from all reports his first wife Sallie as well. He secondly married Harriet Edmunds in May 1817 who produced three daughters and died by 1825. Thus Algernon by age 12 would have lost his mother and step mother and his father would be remarrying again. Devereaux remarried the third time in 1825 to Martha S Jones (his first wife's half sister) and his brother George Ravencroft Claiborne took Algernon to care for him and to Tennessee. In 1837 DJ gave Algernon (now age 24) land in Tenn (see Brunswick Co Deed as referenced by Dorman...to my son etc); in 1847 DJ gave his son slaves (Gibson Co Tenn Deed book.) In 1816 Algernon is mentioned in his grandfather Benjamin Jones will (Greenville Co Va) and in 1827 his uncle Benjamin B. Jones will also in Greenville Co VA. Devereau J. married the fourth time Martha Ann LEWIS and the fifth time to Sallie Ann Walker Taylor. A very interesting character he was indeed, my third great grandfather and from all the records clearly Algernon Sidney was his son. You have to look beyond census records.
2. George R. Claiborne b. 1782 (brother of Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne b. 1785) had a son he named Devereux Jarret who was born in 1806. This son went with them to Tenn and returned to VA and at age 25 married on 2 May 1831 Mariah LEWIS (aka Maria Nicholas Lewis)in Brunswick Co Va.(see Brunswick Co Marriages by Vogt & Kethley or the actual court records) You will find records in Brunswick Co for DJ, Jr and DJ, Senior. During that time Jr and Senior were used to identify the older and younger, not necessarily father and son.

So to recap:
1. Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne (brother of George R. Claiborne) had a son DJ Claiborne Jr who died in 1816 AND a son named Algernon Sidney Claiborne.
2. George R. Claiborne (brother of the above) had a son named Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne b. 1806 sometimes known as D.J. Claiborne, Jr.
I rarely spend time doing this any more so hope this helps.
MJZ

Algernon Sidney, Devereaux Jarratt sons of George R. Claiborne

Per the Dorman book "Claiborne of Virginia": he gives Algernon Sidney's parents as Devereaux Jarratt Claiborne of Brunswick Co. Va.(brother of George Ravenscroft Claiborne). But also says Devereaux's son Devereaux Jr. lived 1810-1816 yet D.J.,Sr. AND D.J.,Jr. are on the census in Brunswick Co. 1840 - 1870, while Algernon Sidney Claiborne was with George Ravenscroft Claiborne in Gibson County Tennessee!

Algernon Sidney went to Nashville with George and Thomas, married 1833 Emma Topp in Nashville, moved to Gibson Co. to be with George (he's on the 1840 census there)and died there just before the 1850 census, and his younger brother James Armstrong Claiborne (son of George R. Claiborne) was staying with Sidney's widow and children.
Sounds like close family to me. All the census records for George show a son the right age as Algernon Sidney.

Also - no where on 1820,30, or 40 census does Devereaux J. Claiborne have a son that age!

But George Ravenscroft Claiborne traveled to Warren Co. NC 1810 with brother Thomas B., then they went back to Brunswick Co. VA to settle land and left to Tennessee where they were on the Nashville 1820 census. (Dorman also claims Thomas was mayor of Nashville 1807, when he wasn't even on the census 1810!)

The "Taylors of Tabernacle" books (Haywood Co. Tennessee family who inter-married with Claibornes) gives Devereaux Jarratt as son of George R. Claiborne, but I haven't been able to find a single record of him in Tennessee. Both they and the Dorman book give marriage in Brunswick Co. Va to Marie Nicholas Lewis (and the Lewis family interwoven also)and that's who stayed in Brunswick Co. and died there!

So what happened? Did Devereaux Jarrett Claiborne and George Ravenscroft Claiborne swap sons? Or did Dorman goof?

Does anyone have a record of a Tennessee Devereaux, b. 1805-1810 and where did he go if he didn't die in Gibson Co,?

I am trying to find out information on my great-grandfather Callie Clayborne/Claybourne/Clayburn/Clayborn. He was the son of Cal (Calloway/Callaway) and Irene, born in South Carolina. He also lived in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan and Troy, New York. He had at least two brothers, Theodore and John. He had children with Mary Elizabeth (aka Ducey) who were Geraldine (Geri/Jeannette), Dorothy (Dot) and Otis (Billy). He was born in approx. 1904/1905. John was born in 1910/1911. Theodore was born approx. 1923.

He was in the US WWII Army Enlistment records as Callie Claybourne.

Any information you can give is greatly appreciated.
