My ancestors were the Clairs from Lanark. Do you have a year of birth for his mother and if possible who her parents were? If so it is likely I can help you a lot with your research. I can tell you now that it is NOT a corruption of Sinclair - I also initially believed this - it is instead a corruption of the Irish name "Clear".
