John Clamp is my grandfather whom passed away years before I was born. John was married to Lillie Clamp. Lillie passed away 3 years before my grandfather. I don't know the full history, but I do know that Ada continued to live in my grandfather's home until she passed away. I recall that she kept me as a child a few times. I can find out a bit more information from my father (Truman) for you. I do know that she was not buried in the Clamp family cemetery, which you can see here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GScid=....

That would be great.
I will email you at your adress if you dont mind It is on the first reply to my Wolvey query

Many thanks,
Marianne

Hi Marianne,

I feel bad for not warning you, but you'd already ordered the certificate...

Joseph Clamp actually married Catharine FIELDS in Radford on 19 May 1841. The GRO index gives his name as Josiah, but the certificate itself clearly shows as Joseph. The GRO reference is Jun 1841 Radford Vol 15 Page 913. I can send you a copy of the certificate if you don't want to order another. It gives Joseph Clamp as of full age, widowed, lace maker. It also gives his father as John Clamp, Hosier.

Thomas Clamp also remarried (Mary HALL died in 1844). He married Mary BURN in Nottingham on 21 Nov 1851. Again, I can send you a copy of the certificate or you can order your own. The GRO reference is Dec 1851 Nottingham Vol 15 Page 1164. Thomas is described as of full age, widowed, lace maker. He also gives his father as John Clamp (deceased), Hosier. Tasty information!

Happy New Year
Geoff

Hi Geoff,
Well that was a shock!!! I pre-empted the certificate arriving soon and went to Nottingham Archives.
As you will know the Joseph Clamp who married Catherine Staples isn't the same one who married Harriet Greenshields.

I did find Joseph and Harriet's marriage in 1823 in Nottingham , St Marys church, and also bap for Reuben Theodore Clamp bap 27 October 1830 in the same church, son of Joseph and Harriet. Joseph is noted as Lace maker.

Also found Thomas Clamp married Mary Hall, both of Attenborough 24 Aug 1828 witnesses Benjamin Porter and Samuel Soar, in Bramcote.

I will have to do some alterations to my tree.

Just goes to show you shouldn't trust anything you see on the Internet put there by other unknown people.
Check it all yourself...

Cheers
Marianne

Hi Marianne,

Argentina is a first for the Clamp family! Plenty went to Canada, though, including Albert Edward Clamp's brother. John James Clamp married his first cousin Eliza Craigie and they moved to British Columbia. There may still be some descendents there.

Has your friend considered doing a DNA test?

The Barwell connection is worth checking out, thanks for the information.

Best, Geoff

Hi Geoff,
This a fascinating tree. I think the Wolvey mentioned on the census is pretty good evidence that this is all correct. I did find Thomas , but it must have been on the 1851 census. Both Thomas and Joseph were Lacemakers.
No dont tell me the details on the certificate.
I am researching for Peter Clamp, an old school friend, who now lives in Canada. I am near Nottingham.
Peter's ancesters were ,
Joseph Clamp and Harriet Greenshield,
John Greenshield Clamp and Jane Stavely,
Joseph Clamp and Ellen(akaHelen) Johnson
Albert Edward Clamp and Emily Austin
Jose Alfredo Clamp and Kathleen Sellars. Jose was born in Argentina
They were mostly in Nottingham , then London, then back to Nottingham

Well, Thanks for your help. I will try to help crack this puzzle.
I did find an odd baptism for an Elizabeth Clamp born to a John and Mary Clamp in the parish of Barwell in 1793, just over the border in Leicestershire, It fits in very well with the sequence of baptisms at Wolvey.
But still no marriage for a John and Mary at that village either.
Keep trying,
Cheers
Marianne

Hi Marianne,

I have a copy of that marriage certificate - do you want me to tell you what it says, or would that spoil the surprise?! I haven't found any direct evidence that Joseph was born in Wolvey, just circumstantial. But his brother Thomas Clamp, who also moved to Nottingham, gave his place of birth as Wolvey in the 1861 census.

William Clamp moved to Warwick, and then later to Bermondsey in South London.

I have had contact with a number of descendents of Joseph Clamp and Harriet Greenshields, especially through their eldest son Joseph Greenshields Clamp. Many of his descendents moved to the USA and Australia. I'd be interested in learning where you fit into this - I may be able to save you some time and energy.

As far as I know, nobody to date has managed to break the Wolvey barrier, and discovered where John and Mary came from. But we keep trying!

Geoff
geoffreydforrest@gmail.com

Hi Geoff,
I am tracing the Clamp family for a direct descendent of Joseph Clamp who married Harriet Greenshields in Nottingham in 1823.
Apart from a tree online stating that Joseph was born in Wolvey I have no direct proof of this.I have recently sent for the marriage cert for Joseph when he remarried Catherine Staples in 1847, in Nottingham. That will give me the name of Joseph's father which might help in identifying his origins, when it arrives after Christmas.
What info do you have on your William Clamp? Where did he go?
There seem to be no other Clamps in Wolvey except for this family of 7 baptisms between 1795 and 1809. The parents marriage I cant find anywhere.

I look forward to hearing of any more info you may have.
Cheers
Marianne

Hi
I'm also interested in the Clamps of Wolvey - I am descended from one of the children, William. Unfortunately the original parish registers do not give any additional information. If you are interested I can send you other information I have about the family - just send me your email address. However, to date I have not found any clues as to where they came from.
Hi,
John and Mary Clamp baptised seven children in Wolvey, Warwickshire between 1796 and 1809.
There are no other Clamp names on the IGI in this village.
mystery name change from Clamp to Clancy

I am trying to find a death date for a John Clamp. He was born in 1875 in Normanton. His parents were Joseph Clamp and Mary Ann Dean and he had a son named Ernest Clamp born in 1899. He was married to my great grandmother (Florence Evelyn Saggers) in 1897 in Hemsworth and is listed as living and the next of kin on his son's military records in 1917, but that's the last trace I have of him. My great grandmother, Florence, married for a second time in 1919 and lists John as deceased. However, her son Ernest is a witness and and both her and Ernie use the last name Clancy for the first time, and not Clamp. However, Ernie's military records from a few years earlier are clearly listed under the last name Clamp From this point forward and on Ernie's marriage certificate in 1924 their last name becomes Clancy instead of Clamp. From what I can figure John Clamp must have died between 1917 and 1924 but I'm not sure if it would be under Clamp or Clancy. He was a listed as a motor driver on Ernie's marriage certificate and the last address I have him living at is on Accommodation Rd, in Hunslet, Leeds. If anyone has any info on the Clamp family or John or Florence it would be really helpful as I've hit a brick wall with this mystery.

So there is no chance that it could be your Joseph Clamp as that would mean he would've have died over the age of 100, this is correct? I'm looking for the wife and parents of my Joseph Clamp.

I am pleased to say that Dawn and I have identified that John Thomas Clamp who jumped ship in Australia (1942) and my grandfather are one and the same. We now have an extended family in Australia and I have also been contacted by Isaac Clamp's (John Thomas's uncle)greatgrandson.

I have spoken to John Thomas Clamp's daughter (my mother)and she cannot remember his mother's name as she died before she was born and John Thomas Clamp's father remarried. As you can see his father's name was also John Thomas Clamp as was his son although he was known as Jack. Our John Thomas Clamp who jumped ship in Australia had, we think three sisters one called Annie, another Rhoda and a third who my mother can not remember at present. I also have pictures of a man called Walter who may be John Thomas's brother although I ned to confirm this. JTC (Aus) was at Dunkirk and over the course of WW2 appears to have served in all three armed services at one time or another. I have details of his whereabouts and movements prior to his washing up in Australia.
I have a photo of him if the details above sound as if he could be the John Thomas Clamp you know.

It is a little difficult to confirm as my grandmother (John's wife past away approximately 22 years ago. His son past away several years ago. His daughter (my mother) is still alive but I am not sure how she would handle our communicating. All I know is that our John Thomas came from barrow in Furnace as did my grandmother and was in the merchant navy. He jumped ship during or towards the end of WW2 whilst in Australia. At one time I believe he was living in the Alice Springs area. The Similarities are too close to be anything other than the same person.

One piece of additional information is that at one time he may have been stationed with an anti aircraft balloon unit in London, probably the beginning of WW2.

My maternal ancestors are Clamps. My g/father was Richard Ferring Clamp, born in Liverpool, his father was Richard Edumund Clamp born in London, and his father was Farring Clamp, not quite sure where he was born as on three census it gives three different places - Bury St.Edmunds, Suffolk, = Ipswich, Norfolk and Canterbury City - his date of birth would have been around 1799. I have not been able to find the birth of Richard Edmund Clamp (approx.1825) or Farring Clamp - would anyone have any informatin on these Clamps.
Thank you.
Bev
