Hi there, we are a branch of the Clapham family who immigrated from Scotland to Australia with the arrival of my grandfather, Andrew C Clapham and his brother Thomas L Clapham in 1927. They came to Australia apart of the Big Brother movement to help children of the soldiers who died in war. Their father, Matthew Clapham died during WWI in 1918. He was born in 1879 and was married to Jane Houston. There is still a large part of our relatives in Scotland, which unfortunately I do not know much about, as only 2 of the brothers came out to Australia. Don't know if this would be any help?

Mehitable Cunningham was my ggrandmother. I have been researching the Cunningham family and have lots of information on all the children of Prudence and Mathew. Unfortunately, haven't been able determine Mathew's parents - possibly they are William Lowie or Louis and Alida (I have copies of funeral cards with those names)
Which branch of the Cunningham do you descend?

Doris was born July 31, 1915 at Gordon, NE, died August 15, 2006 at Scottsdale, AZ. She married Karl (Ken) Edward Nielsen in 1945 at Lake Tahoe, NV. He ws born August 3, 1923, served in the US Navy during WWII, lived at Richmond, CA for several years, moved to Seattle. Karl died May 14, 2001 at Scotsdale, AZ. Burial was in the National Memorial Cemetery fo Arizona at Phoenix. The obit for Doris was published in the Arizona Republic on August 20, 2006: Doris Eileen Nielsen was born on July 31, 1915, in Gordon Nebraska, and passed away on August 15, 2006 in Scottsdale, Arizona. The youngest of three siblings, she had two older brothers.
She was a bookkeeper during World War II, and continued working until she was 65. Doris married Karl Edward Nielsen (Ken) in 1945 in Lake Tahoe, NV. Ken and Doris moved from Seattle to the Valley in 1990, where they enjoyed their remaining years together in retirement. Known as a loving wife, mother and a treasured friend, everyone affectionately referred to Doris as "Mom". She is survived by one daughter, Markie Nielsen of Scottsdale, AZ and one granddog "Hope". (In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Arizona Humane Society.) Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Bunker's Garden Chapel 480-964-8686.
I have a copy of Jasper's will, also have seen the death registry entries for Jasper and James (I think from memory). Haven't been able to get much further back than an entry regarding their father - on their baptist records I think. Can you go further back with their parents?

Kind regards, Judith

Hi, I have been searching my family tree and it has lead to Herbert and Matilda Clapham who came to NZ in 1845 with the two sons you mentioned. They then had two more one dying 6 months then had my great grand father John James Herbert Clapham. There is another Herbert Clapham who came to NZ with his uncle John Clapham who you mentioned but he is not related to the Herbert Clapham you mentioned (I was mistakened of this also) The Herbert who came with Matilda was a Tailor.

They were christened in St Mary Magdalene church in Woolwich. I have no record of Daniel and Sarah's wedding nor when Daniel died. Sarah died in 1826.
George CLAPHAM 1764-?? Kirkgate Leeds

I have been looking for a few years for the wife of George CLAPHAM of Kirkgate, Leeds, Yorkshire, and therefore the mother of his children. He was born 1764 at Leeds, baptised at Leeds St Peter on 14 Jan 1765, the son of Charles and Alice (nee PARKINSON). Have checked all the various online sources that I could find for a marriage but have had no luck.

George had eleven children baptised at Leeds St Peter from 1791 to 1807, but their mother's name was not recorded in the register for some reason. The mother was not recorded on all the baptisms there for this period, not just the CLAPHAMs.

We suspect George's wife might have been Ellen or Eleanor STUART/STEWART/STEWARD, as a couple of the children baptised to George have this surname as a second name. Plus also they used another surname as a second name with another of their children. There were STUART/STEWART/STEWARDs in the Leeds area at the time, from records on the IGI.

There appears to be no other George CLAPHAM having children in the area at the time so believe the following to be all of his children. The info was extracted from the film of the Leeds St Peter baptism registers.

John Stuart CLAPHAM baptised 10 Mar 1791
Mary CLAPHAM baptised 13 Sep 1792 married William SERVANT 1830 died 1867
Charles CLAPHAM baptised 8 Jan 1794
Joseph CLAPHAM baptised 8 Oct 1795 born 6 Aug 1795
Elizabeth CLAPHAM baptised 1 Jun 1797
Alice CLAPHAM baptised 17 Mar 1799
Hannah CLAPHAM baptised 31 Jul 1800
Ann CLAPHAM baptised 31 Jan 1802
Sarah CLAPHAM baptised 7 Aug 1806 born 24 Nov 1803
George Parkinson CLAPHAM baptised 7 Aug 1806 born 30 Jul 1805
Eleanor Steward (Ellen Stuart) CLAPHAM baptised 18 May 1810 born 23 Sep 1807, married William DUCKETT 1846 died 1896

Joseph born 1795 was my direct ancestor. Sometime in his early twenties he went to London, and was married there on 18 Apr 1819 to Sarah Susannah TOMLIENS. In October 1841 they came out to New Zealand. He died in 1857, which is prior to the parents names being included on New Zealand death certificates. His death notice in the newspaper, and his headstone, both state he was 'late of Leeds'. We know this is the correct family because of the names given by Joseph and Sarah to their children.

Sarah Ann
George Parkinson
Ellen
William Thomas
Thomas Henry
Elizabeth
Joseph Charles

I did find a will for a Charles CLAPHAM from Kirkgate, but it is the wrong one, and so far have not found one for a George. There is no sign of him on the 1841 census that I can see, or anyone that looks like any of his sons, other than Joseph, who we know was in Wilson St, London.

From the NBI I found that George Parkinson CLAPHAM was buried at Leeds St Peter on 18 Aug 1824 aged 18, and possibly his sister Sarah was buried on 9 Jul 1820 aged 16. Have not found what happened to any of the other children.

Hoping that there is someone out there with better Yorkshire knowledge who can track down this elusive lady and her husband and other children.

Ian C

Can't find them in 1851, but she appears in 1861 with her eldest sister, and in 1871, 1881, and 1891 with her niece in Leeds.

Ellen Stuart DUCKETT died in 1896.

Ian C

Hello,
Nicholas, I am wondering if you are still active on this board, and if so, do you have any information still on the Clapham family. Elizabeth Clapham who married James Booth in 1830 at wakefield are my great-great-great-great grandparents.
My family lived in Finedon for many years. My cousin has reseached the family quite extensively. My direct ancestor was Job Clapham. My grandfather was called Elisha Ringrose Clapham, the middle name of Ringrose was the surname of one of my ancestors who married a Lettica Ringrose so it was used for many years as a middle name for an eldest son. My grandfather ended up living in Burton Latimer Northamptonshire and married Emily Cox. They then moved to Irchester Northamptonshire. 2 of their ten children still there as do many of my cousins and second cousins. My father was Sidney Clapham who was General Secretary for the Boot and Shoe union NUFLAT (National Union of Footwear Leather and Allied TRades) now KLAT. If I can help any further please let me know.

I am trying to find a Daniel Clapham who married Sarah(surname unknown). They married around 1783 and lived in Woolwich. They had four daughters - Jane c 1785 - Elizabeth c. 1787 - Ann Marie c.1789 - Hannah c.1794
All girls were baptised at St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich. I have not been able to find a marriage certificate which makes me think they were married elsewhere.
Does anyone have a Daniel in their Clapham family?
Colleen Bell

Eleanor Steward CLAPHAM 1807-??

Eleanor Steward CLAPHAM was born at Kirkgate, Leeds, 23 Sep 1807, and baptised at Leeds Saint Peter on 18 May 1810.

Only her father's name is recorded in the baptism register, George CLAPHAM of Kirkgate.

Has anyone come across Eleanor in any other records, marriage, burial, census, ??

Trying to find her mother's name. Suspect it might be Ellen or Eleanor STEWART/STUART as Eleanor Steward CLAPHAM had an elder brother John Stuart CLAPHAM, born 1791. Nothing on the IGI, but there are Eleanor STEWART/STUARTS in Yorkshire, although I suspect George and ?? did not marry in Yorkshire. There is a John STUART marrying at Leeds Saint Peter in 1764 which is a possibility.

Ian Clapham

Most of my Clapham ancestors come from Lincolnshire, Horncastle or Hackthorne in particular. The Lincolnshire branch doesn't seem to be as widespread as Claphams from Yorkshire. I posted my tree (although most of the pre 1850 information is someone else's work) here http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=3540967, but the birthplace didn't seem to upload from my file and I didn't have time to manually edit things. If you know the name (and birthdate, ideally) of one of your Lincolnshire ancestors I can check to see if there is a match.

Cheers,

Matthew

You're right! I did some further research into my Clapham's and sure enough they are from Yorkshire. John Clapham was not born in Ireland, but his wife Martha Wallwork was (one of the censuses was wrong). John's father was Abraham Clapham, born in Hunslet, Yorkshire around 1785. Abraham was married to Elizabeth Priestley (married 1 Mar 1813 at St Peter, Huddersfield, Yorks). I have a little more information about them somewhere, but I have been tearing the house apart lately and haven't found it yet. Abraham's other children were James, Joseph and Emanuel.

I was born Janet Doris Clapham in North Wales in 1954.
My father's name was Robert Clapham but don't know much about any of his family. As far as I know he was born 23.9.1926 in Yorkshire I think. I also, like you would like to know more information about the Claphams to make up a family tree.
