There was a Clapp Baby Food plant in Rochester, NY.
My father, Fred B. Morgan, was an engineer there. I used to earn extra money by pulling weeds in the large grassy front of the building. I believe it was on Mt. Read Blvd., north of Lyell Avenue, Roch. NY. I am attempting to put together the work timeline of my father. If you have any input I would greatly appreciate it. my email: is : drm4u@cox.net

Army Pfc. Richard E. Clapp, 19, of Seattle, Wash., Korean MIA Identified
IMMEDIATE RELEASE	No. 292-12
April 19, 2012
Soldier Missing in Action from Korean War Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Korean War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

Army Pfc. Richard E. Clapp, 19, of Seattle, Wash., will be buried April 25, at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.

On Sept. 2, 1950, Clapp and the C Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment came under fire near Yulchon, South Korea, and Clapp was killed in action. The Army was unable to identify his remains at the time, and the remains were buried as "Unknown" in a military cemetery on the Korean Peninsula.

In 1951, the U.S. consolidated cemeteries on the peninsula. The unknown remains were interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

In 2011, due to advances in identification technology, the remains were exhumed for identification. Scientists from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used circumstantial evidence and forensic identification tools such as radiograph comparison, and dental records to identify Clapp.

Today, more than 7,900 Americans remain unaccounted-for from the Korean War. Identifications continue to be made from the remains that were returned to the United States, using forensic and DNA technology.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call 703-901-7097.

http://www.defense.gov/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=15203

********
Not related.
Re: CLAPP and Native Americans

Here is the link to the photos I took at Seneca Cemetery...

http://flic.kr/s/aHsjysURC7

Phoebe Sophia Nave's origins seem shadowy to me. I have yet to find any source referencing her by her maiden name. There was a Nave family resident primarily in Taney County, MO as early as the 1830s and we are fortunate to have some details about them from The Turnbo Manuscripts, a keyword searchable archive of which can be found at the following site.

http://thelibrary.org/lochist/turnbo/index.html

Among the stories related is one which mentions two brothers of Alexander Clapp, Patterson and Irving (see WIPED OUT OF EXISTENCE BY WOLVES). From this and available census records we know that the Clapp and Nave families (or members thereof) were residing and/or working in the same localities, so it makes sense that our Phoebe came from this Nave family. Anecdotal evidence is provided by the fact that the marriage record for Benjamin Franklin Word and Mary Jane Clapp lists Thomas Stallcup as a witness. Thomas Stallcup was the son of Delila Elizabeth Clapp by her second marriage. Her first husband was Granville Nave who I presume to have been a brother or half-brother of Phoebe.

If it is the case that Phoebe came from this Nave family, then looking to their origins, the records indicate the elder members all came from Tennessee, and it turns out there was a fairly well documented Nave family which had settled in eastern Tennessee around the time of the America Revolution. That family had roots in Switzerland. Here is a link to a document describing this family...

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~moliving/Nave_2009_0409.pd...

I note that this history branches off to a tree that diverges from the one Phoebe would have belonged to, but it is one explanation for the Tennessee origin of her parents. What I take away from the narrative is that these Nave's were frontiersmen who moved directly into Indian lands. So it is at least conceivable that there was interaction or even intermarriage. But so far I have not found clear link nor lineage that would even suggest Native ancestry. I have a feeling this question will never be answered satisfactorily.
Hi, nice to hear from you. Sounds like it was an interesting trip to the cemeteries. Were you able to take any photos? Concerning the Native American connection. It was only family lore in my wife's family that Radiant Word's mother was 100% Oklahoma Cherokee. Her mother was Mary Jane Clapp but her name was unknown as part of the family story. Now as we see it is more likely that it was actually Mary Jane Clapp's mother, Phebe with the Native American blood or connection. What do you think, any ideas?

Hi Richard,

Last week I had an opportunity to visit the graves of Alexander, Phoebe, Emma E., Oliver and wife Emma A., Clapp, at Seneca Cemetery. The cemetery is divided into Oklahoma and Missouri sections. The Clapp family plot is in the Missouri section. Oliver's headstone is different than the others, and it appears his remains may have been removed from their original resting place at the Wyandotte Indian Cemetery in Ottowa, Oklahoma. I suspect this happened because Oliver was not Native American, and if that was the case, his parents were not either. Alexander Clapp clearly was not Native American, but I don't have enough information about Phoebe Sophia Nave to make that determination. I am curious, why do you think she might have been Native American?
I have some information on Harold H. Clapp who founded Clapp Baby food.

The last surviving son passed in June:

Jack Clapp, 89, entered this world in Ithaca on Aug. 28, 1921, and passed peacefully on Wednesday (June 22, 2011).

As an infant, his parents, Harold H. Clapp and Anna (Alberger) Clapp began making his food in the basement of their home, leading to the first baby food business (CLAPP'S) based in Rochester.

Jack entered the Navy to serve in WW II. He was one of the original "Flyboys" chosen from the Rochester area. Based out of Key West, he was a subchaser; he then served in the Reserves for many years flying out of Niagara Falls. Jack's life work was as a mechanic.

In 1943, he married Catherine L. Kurtz of Wayland. Together they have seven children. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Catherine Clapp; children, John (Cathy) Clapp, Helen (William) Keough, Suzanne Donald, Elizabeth (David Christie) Clapp, Mary Catherine (Tom Newton) Clapp, Debbie (Eric) Kmentt and Roger Clapp; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Hospice.
I was just handed three boxes of genealogy, in one of the boxes I found a book from 1876 printed by David Clapp & son, publishers. THE CLAPP FAMILY IN AMERICA,this book has been handed down, in the front cover it reads,, Helen Amelia Clapp Perry April 29 1876
To her son William Clapp Perry June 24 1912.
My mother was a Perry. I have not been able to look through it all, however I have seen some news paper clippings, and post cards from the 1800's

I am searching for information on a Clapp family from Edgar County, Illiois (specifically Borton, Illinois) buried at Embarrass Creek Cemetery; possibly related to my great-great grandfather Snowdon and his brother Seaberry Clark, also of that township, from the latter part of the 19th century.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

This would make an excellent article for the Alamance Genealogical Society journal. Would you be interested in submitting it to our editor? Also, where did you find the info on a wagon train, the Clapp, Shoffner, and Anthony's are my ancestors.
Mary

Thank you. That would be fascinating to see. If you would like to email me at Coloradoan@hotmail.com we could communicate directly and that would be easier. I also believe Lewis Clapp was Wesley's brother, and Lewis was married to Dotha Brundage, Alaphan's sister. Do you have that info.? Also, do you know if Wesley was married once before his marriage to Alaphan? I have found a Wesley Clapp marriage record earlier, and he would have been old enough. I can't find any info. on Wesley after 1894. Thank you for your response. I hope we can help each other out.

Is there any later edition of "The Clapp Memorial" about a 2nd marriage for Wesley after he divorced Alaphair which I understand was around 1880? Boy, that 1890 census would give me a lot of information.

My family is from Massachusetts and I have been researching the Clapp family for about 15 years and have a GED of about 30,000 names. The oldest date I have 1500 up to present date. You may have a link to how the Clapp's went to the Southern and Western USA. Looked at your pictures of the manuscript of your G Grandmother Radiant.
Contact me at e-mail jimclapp@att.net
CLAPP and Native Americans

I’m looking for information concerning the family of Alexander CLAPP (1827-1914) and Phebe Sophia NAVE (1838-1912). Phebe may have been Native American and an alternative spelling for her name is Le Neve. At least during the 1900 and 1910 US Census periods, this family lived in Indian Territory in what is today the Wyandotte Nation in Wyandotte, Oklahoma. This couple are my wife’s 3rd Great Grandparents. Any help or pointers are appreciated. Regards, Richard Broadhurst

I am researching my wife’s CLAPP family history. Her Great Grandmother, Radiant B. Word Thompson, was living and working as a genealogist in Washington DC at the time she donated a CLAPP family history manuscript to the Library of Congress in 1946. I have posted images of her manuscript online for other researchers and family members to view. Regrettably, this work is not sourced. Nevertheless, I hope this document helps someone out there ….

https://picasaweb.google.com/rmbhnl/TheAncestorsOfMaryJaneCl...

Roger CLAPP (06 Apr 1609 - 02 Feb 1691) is the 7th Great Grandfather of Radiant B.
I believe that Wesley married my ggrandmother Vina Huber nee White. My grandmother, was born Baby Girl Clapp to Wesley G Clapp and Vina B Clapp, May 1 1889 in Battle Creek Twp., Calhoun County. Birth information says Wesley was born in New York and Vina in Ontario. Canada. According to my grandmother she was born in Harmonia Michigan, which is no longer in existance. Vina left Wesley around 1892, but was told that my gram had step siblings from Wesley.
I've been trying to find a marriage certificate for them and have searched Michigan records from 1886 to 1888 to no avail.
Vina was married to Henry Huber and lived in Buffalo NY according to the 1880 census. I checked the directories in Buffalo and he disappears from them after 1882.
Do you think it's possible that your Wesley is my ggrandfather?

Hi:
Wesley was married to Alaphan/Alaphair Brundage the sister of my g-g-g-grandmother. They married Feb. 15, 1866, had at least four children (one died very young), and were divorced by 1880. Have you checked out Find-a-grave? Pictures of their headstones are posted there. Thank you.

CLAPP-HATCH connection in VT

Does anyone know anything about a Hannah Clapp who married one Daniel C Hatch in Westminster VT? I do not believe this is not my line but I am interested in drawing other connections by tugging on the threads of this family tree.

Daniel was born 1789 (unknown as to where) and died Jun 5, 1815 in Westminster, VT. He married Hannah Feb 26. 1811 and they had 2 children (and I know some of the descendant history) before he died. I am really trying to figure out who Daniel and Hannah's parents were and if they were related to other Clapp or Hatch relatives in the area.

Thanks for your input. Possibly there is a direct descendant or a distant cousin who can shed some light on these folks.

I don't know if we are connected. My dad's name was Roger Clapp. Our family lore was that the Clapp family came from Surrey England 20 years after the Mayflower.
