With old school photos.

You can do a search and you may find more third cousins in New Cumnock.

Off the top of my head that could be more than 20. With even more if you count the fifth and 6th cousins.
Hi Phillip

Two families in my street in New Cumnock were called Clapperton.
Tom and John are now dead( same generation as my father George)
The son of John is a police inspector called Andrew. He is in a triathlon club and you can get his email from this web page

http://www.ayrodynamic.co.uk/contacts.htm

Hope this helps. I think Andrew's father and my father were 2nd cousins.

Next time I'm in New Cumnock I'll take some photographs and send them.

Some of the headstones may have useful information for your search back into the Clapperton line.

Ian

Hi Ian,
I believe we are of the same generation making us third cousins. Exciting for me to make contact with a Clapperton descendent in Scotland. (My first!) Your namesake, your grandfather, his mother Marion Clapperton (your great grandmother) was the sister to my great grandfather John Clapperton. So our common ancestors would then be Marion's and John's parents (our great great grandparents) - John Clapperton and Mary Hutchison. Mary Hutchison was from Dalmellington and John was from Thornhill but they settled in New Cumnock. It was my great grandfather John (Marion's brother) who immigrated in 1881. I am trying to create my tree, with all its branches and twigs, from our great great grandparents. I know nothing of the Houston's other than Marion Clapperton's marriage to George Houston in 1853.

Hello Bobby! My apologies for not replying sooner. Just now became aware of this posting. I haven't had a chance to reconcile the information you provided with what I have but am very thankful you provided it. (I am still at work but wanted to reply to this post as soon as I discovered it). I will check out your website (although I believe I already have). The posting you tried to respond to was probably my younger brother, Andrew (another one!), who also happens to be a "soccer" coach at his school in New Jersey. I think he told me he had visited your site. Funny, I found a youtube video featuring a David Clapperton from New Cumnock not too long ago. Had me in stitches laughing so hard. Apparently he was drunk and he keeps singing "one David Clapperton, there's only one David Clapperton...one David Claaaaaaaaaaperton, there's only one David Clapperton!" Obnoxious but had me laughing. Not sure if he plays with Glenafton any more or if he moved on to another team. I am excited to learn that there are still some Clapperton's around. My ancestors were all coal miners and continued to be in the US for at least a generation or two. I was under the impression that New Cumnock had fallen on hard times and that folks were moving away. I am looking forward to a visit hopefully around this time next year.

My father was called George after his grand father and me called john after my grandfather.

I have a cousin who did the Houston family tree and most still lived in the new Cumnock area.

I have a book with my grandfather's signature and also that of his aunt Elizabeth Reid. Could be you have one of these books from the original set.
Goldsmith's animated nature.

Andrew,Tom and John are still pupular first names for clapperton boys in New Cumnock.

John( but known as Ian)

Hello Philip,
My name is Bobby Guthrie and I grew up in New Cumnock. I am currently writing the history of the local football team Glenafton Athletic.

Andrew Clapperton your great grandfather's second youngest brother had a number of sons. His 3rd born son Alexander Clapperton is attributed of coming up with name Glenafton Athletic when it was formed in 1930. Apparently he was quite a character and was known as the Major, he had been invalided out of the Great War. During World War II he was in joint charge of the Home Guard in New Cumnock. His older brother Andrew, played football for New Cumnock United , the team that preceded the Glens.

I run Glenafton's web-site at www.glenaftonfc.com and a some time ago a Clapperton from USA posted on the club forum a request , but when I tried responding there seemed to be a problem with the e-mail address,

Your great grandfather brothers Alexander and Thomas were twins and when I was growing up in New Cumnoock, there were twin Clapperton boys and also a younger set of twin Clapperton girls Pauline and Linda who were in my class at school - so they were born in 1958. There are still Clapperton;s in the village.

hope this helps,
all the best
bobby

Almost 10 years later.... My great grandfather, John Clapperton, was born in Afton Brigend 1849. He married Catherine Stewart and they immigrated in 1881 to Illinois and then settled in the Pittsburgh area. His father, John (b.1824 - Thornhill), and mother Mary Hutchison produced 10 children altogether who lived in New Cumnock (Craigbank). In addition to John there was William (1851), Marion (1853), James (1855), David (1860), twins Alexander and Thomas (1861), Robert (1863), Andrew (1865) and George (1869). George, who married Joan Gibb, followed my great grandfather John and immigrated to the Pittsburgh area around 1909.

Hi. I did trace some Clappertons from LA to Minnesota to Bonaventure, Quebec to Morayshire, Scotland. In the Bonaventure, Quebec area i was mostly interested in the John Clapperton 1810 and Felecite Dugas 1812 family of Maria-Carleton-Bonaventure area. Also found some info on his son James 1839 who later married Marie-Delima Labria. Also some info on Thomas and Ellen Mills. Also info on William and Marie LaBel? My research notes are completely unorganized but was planning to organize and expand them anyway.. So would enjoy hearing from you.

Doug

Samuel Archibald Robert Clapperton

I'm doing some research for my step-dad on the Clapperton side of his family.

This all came about because his aunt died recently and left the original Royal Appointment of a Samuel Claperton to Captain of the 8th Company of Royal Marines and is dated 01/09/1814, complete with wax seal. Amazing that it still looks like new!

Anyway, I have traced back to the birth of William George Clapperton born 03/06/1868, whose father was Samuel Archibald Robert Clapperton, Lieutenant Colonel. I think this is the same Samuel Archibald Robert Clapperton who is mentioned in the same context as THE Hugh Clapperton. Hugh Clapperton's will makes mention of a Samuel Archibald Robert Clapperton as his uncle and I've also seen references to Hugh's uncle a Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Clapperton as providing a biographical sketch in one of Hugh's books.

I'm looking for any further information to take me back further in the tree and confirm whether SAR Clapperton is the Samuel Claperton in the old document or whether this would be another generation back and be SAR Clapperton's father who may be a Samuel Claperton?

William George's birth certificate names his father as SAR Clapperton and the mother as a Sarah formerly Mays (at least it looks like Mays).

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
Jools

My g-g-g grandparents were James and Joan Cunningham from Melrose. Their son James married Margaret Mark and their son James, a shoemaker, married Margaret Andrews in Dalkeith. My great grandmother Joan was born there but married Frederick Grist and lived in Richmond Surrey where their daughter Alice was born. She married John (Jack) Maloney and their daughter Joan was my mother.

So we are very remotely related!

James Clapperton, Scotland>CAN>US>Kansas, 1828-77

Found a few more pieces about James Clapperton, but not his family. What I've heard from my great aunts: James immigrated to Canada when he was 14 years old with his brother John. He and his brother got in a fight and hit someone with a rock; not knowing how the person faired, they fled to North America. They were seperated and never saw each other again. James was a railroad engineer. He was fighting a roundhouse fire on the bucket brigade. He walked home and his clothes froze and he died of pneumonia. James is related to Chrysler. The possible Chrysler connection might be via John Matthews Chrysler born in 1829, in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. His second wife was Isabella Clapperton. The family moved to the United States, shortly after the marriage (1853) and settled in Wyandotte, Kansas. John and Isabella had 4 daughters, all born in Wyandotte. John's son from his first marriage was Henry Chrysler, who was a locomotive engineer. James is with John and Isabella Chrysler in the 1865 Kansas census. Can it be that she is James's sister?

Now the facts:
1865 Census, Quindaro, Wyandotte County, Kansas: James Clapperton, age 34, carpenter, born in Scotland. Living with John M. Chrysler, age 35, merchant, Isabel Chrysler, age 25, Andrew Chrysler, age 18, Henry Chrysler, age 16, Hannah Chrysler, age 12, Wm Chrysler, age 10, Agnes Chrysler, age 7, unreadable male Chrysler, age 3, and Arthur Lunday, miller. Next door is Geo D. Chrysler. 1870 Census, Wyandott, Kansas: James Clapperton, age 43, born in Edinborough, machinist; Elizabeth, age 31, born in Kentucky; John Campbell, age 13, born in Nebraska; and David Clapperton, age 4, born in Kansas. Real estate valued at $300 and personal property at $200. 1875 Kansas Census, Wyandotte, Kansas, March 1, 1875: James Clapperton, born in Scotland, age 46, working as a carpenter, value of property $200; Elizabeth, age 38, born in Kentucky; John Campbell, age 18, born in Missouri, working as a railroad employee; David Clapperton, age 8, born in Kansas. Wyandotte Gazette, 1/2/6/1877: "DIED. CLAPPERTON - In Wyandotte, Kansas, Jan 17, 1877, James Clapperton, a native of Aberdeen Scotland, and for 12 years an employee of the Kansas Pacific Railroad company in this city and at Armstrong, aged 49 years."

Any clues/hints/help appreciated!
My granddad, Peter Clark Wilson came from Galashiels. One of his great grandmothers was Margaret Clapperton, who was born about 1800 (I have two dates for her birth, 1791 and 1802). Her parents were James Clapperton and Joan Cunningham. They may have originally been from Melrose, but Margaret died in Galashiels. If anyone is related to me through them, I would be interested in hearing from you.

Donald Wilson

John Clapperton had emigrated to Boston and married (or at least had a child) with Anna Barker. It is a bit convoluted because Barker appears to be her maiden name that she retained. She had another daughter who used the Barker last name. They both lived with my Grandfather Lester Sibbald Clapperton.

Interesting, so the birthdate of 1867 narrows down which John Clapperton I have been looking for. It has been a little troublesome finding which John Clapperton I have been looking for.
This John Clapperton may be my great-grandfathers older brother, who was born in Galashiels in 1867. I can find no record of his death in the U.K., so assumed he must have emigrated to the US. His mothers maiden name was Sibbald, which leads me to assume there may be a connection.

My father's sister, Norah Elizabeth Clapperton b.1893 in Carlisle, Cumbria, emigrated to Canada after WW1, to marry a Canadian Airman named Guy Fairfax Brown. She had three daughters that I know of, one of whom came back to the UK during WW2 to train as a nurse, but was killed in the Blitz C1940/41. Norah lived in Vancouver. I would like to trace her family to find out when she died,if she had grandchildren etc. Can anyone help ?

I am also looking for a Clapperton in the same area, Adam Clapperton married to an Inglis possibly Nellie in the late 1800's. The Inglis was a daughter of John Inglis and Robina Currie. I do have a picture of some Clapperton's but it is not labeled well.
