Benjamin and Fannie Clar

I made this same request about 12 years ago under an different user name and I am hoping that in the intervening years more information has been found.

My grandparents on my father's side of the family were Benjamin and Fannie (possibly Fanny) Clar. The original family name was Sklar or Sklarov or something close to that. Both of them were born in Russia. Benjamin was born on 01 September 1884 and emigrated from Russia, possibly Odessa in 1906. Fannie emigrated in 1907 but I know nothing else about her. My father was born in Baltimore in December 1915 so I am guessing that Benjamin and Fannie were married in 1914 or 1915. They moved to Washington, D.C. when my dad was about six months old. They lived on Kenyon Street. I believe that Benjamin was naturalized in 1912 but don't know for certain. Fannie and Benjamin had three other sons, Simon, Milton and Henry.

My e-mail is Asha_man217@yahoo.com.

Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Michael A.
Hi James,

I was wondering if you could do me a favor and send me the update at jackklar@yahoo.com I will not have any way of getting on the internet for maybe six months. The only way I ever get on the internet is from work. Four weeks ago I had Catherized Heart surgery and got back last Monday, so I could log on then, only to fall three days later and broke my hip, so it might be six months to get back to work. Right now I using a hospital computer and so I will be away for a while.

Thanks Jack

I'm trying to find any information on my GG Grandmother, Catherine Clar (might be spelled Klar or Kler). Her dob was 9/14/1842. She married my GG Grandfather, Frederic Eckerty (Friederich Aegerter) around 1860 in Ohio. I know she and Frederic had at least one child in Tuscarawas, Co., OH. The majority of her life she lived in Crawford Co., IN. She was born in Germany and immigrated to the US sometime between 1842-1860. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated

I am trying to get more information on my grandfather, Benjamin Clar(Sklaroff). He and his family were Russian Jews who emigrated to the U.S. in 1903(?) and supposedly landed in Philadelphia. He married Fannie (I don't have her maiden name) in Baltimore, MD. My father, Arden (Abraham), was born in Baltimore in 1915. His brothers, Simon, Milton and Henry were born in Washington, DC. Anyone who may know something about the family may contact me at GunOwnr@aol.com. Thanks, Michael A. Clar

Jo-Anne,

My grandfather came from Russia in 1906. Based on my research so far, our original family name may have been Schklar. Any chance that there is a connection? If so, I could use all the help I can get. My sisters have recently discovered some relatives we were not aware of. Unfortunately, the information I am getting is incomlpete, confusing and contradictory.

Anyway, good luck on your reasearch. By the way, I work five blocks from the National Archives in D.C. Let me know if there is anything I can check on for you.

Michael Clar

Any thoughts on the origin of the name???

My thoughts since they came from Canton Bern in Switzerland then Germany then America it might be related to where they came from. Canton Bern is right next to Canton Glarus and my great great grandmother was known to pronounce the name "Gloor" could it have originated from "Glar" for the Glarus region? The Glarus region is named for a mythical Roman figure named Glarus.

Just some wild speculation...

In surching for surnames for my name ( Klar ), I found out that at one time a few generations back it was Klahr. Then on back it was Clar. One branch of descendants of the Clar's spelled it Claar. So if you can not find your ancestors try the different spellimgs.

Balthasar Clar ( Claar )

This information was found on the Switzerland mailing list;

Balthasar Clar, born about 1660-1663 Canton Bern, Switzerland and died 26, Feburary 1703 Mimbach, Krs, Webenheim/Saarland. He married (1) Unknown and married (2) on 14, January 1698 at Reformed Church at Mimbach to Elizabetha ( Hussong ) Wolf. She was born 1662 and died 1713 at Mimbach, she was the daughter of Anthoni Hussong and Catharine Unknown.

Children; (1) Unknown were Hans Casper, Heinrich, Joh.Peter, Rudolf H and Anna.

Children, (2) Elizabetha were Joh. Jakob and Maria Magaretha.

Could Johann Jacob Klahr who came to America in 1752 be the son of one of Balthasar's first wife's children. Johann's father was a Casper Klar. There is at least one Ancestory.com family tree which says he was. If so there is another branch of Klahr/Klar/Clar family who came to America on Ship Samuel on 03, December 1740.

Dear Daniel:I feel at least I am getting closer. When my ancestors got off the boat at Ellis Island, they decided to stay in the NY, NJ area. I grew up in NJ. My Grandfgather Theodore Herman Clar was Protestant. I was raised Catholic. My fathers mother made a crude style family tree back in the 60's. That is all I have to work with. How did your Ancestors come over from Europe? Where did they originally land in the US before going to Denver? My grandmothers name was Josephine. My son's name is Daniel.
My mother was Esther Clar. I have located a lot of Clar family members. We were from Eastern Europe. I did locate a woman in Miami FL., name Lydia Clar who great grandfather Clar was from Majorca Spain. She's on AOL email. My grandfather was born in a place called Bessarabia, now Moldavia circa 1870. The my family and the Clar members I have found are jewish, were yours? I'd love to discuss.
