From 1849 to 1861 he was farming and milling in West Grove township, then coming to this city he has been in the harness busines ever since. By good work and fair dealing he has acquired a large trade, amounting last year to$10,000. He was married in June, 1832,to Mary Clare, of Virginia, and they have had ten children: Ann R., George C., Grenville, Jr., now in business with his father, Josiah C., Charles B., David and four deceased, Robert, Henry, John M., and Mary L.
de Clare family descent from Dukes of Normandy

In case anyone here is from this line, I thought I'd post a little information on the de Clare family from which I am descended. It's traced back to the Jarls of Norway, and eventually became the powerful Clare family of England.

The de Clare family from which I descend starts with Rollo, "the Granger", Ragnvaldsson, a roving Viking from Norway who settled in the duchy of Normandy and became it's first Duke with consent from the King of France. He and his mistress, Poppa de Valois, had a son, Guilliame (also called William the Longsword) who became Normandy's second Duke. His son, Richard I, "the Fearless", had an illegitimate son named Godfrey (Geoffrey) de Brionne. Godfrey's grandson was Richard Fitzgilbert, who fought in the Norman invasion with his kinsman, William the Conquerer (so therefore all who come from this line are distant cousins of the Conquerer and his descendants).

Richard was, at the time of the Domesday book survey, called Richard de Tonebruge, now Tunbridge, in Kent, which town he obtained from the Archbishop of Canterbury in lieu of the castle of Brionne. At that time he held nearly 200 lordships in various counties, one of which was Clare in County Suffolk. After making Clare his chief seat, he was styled Richard de Clare. He or his son is said to have died in a skirmish with the Welsh, and was succeeded by his son Gilbert, who was born about 1066.

Gilbert's descendants included Gilbert, "the Strongbow", de Clare and Isabella de Clare, who was a mistress of King Henry I. For some added information on this line, you can visit: http://www.castlewales.com/clares.html or http://www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/cgi-bin/gedlkup/n=royal?royal06102

Neither of these are my sites, but they are both good resources for genealogical and historical research.

Cheers!

Jessica

Additional information about James and his family. Found a IGR at Family History Library. James and Catherine Clare. List James born 1820, Catherine born 1820, married in Ireland about 1940. Mary born in Ireland 1841, William born in Ireland 1843, John born in Ireland 1845, James born in Millport, NY. 1851, Anna born in Millport, NY. 1854, Catherine born in Millport, NY. 1856. All children born with the last name of Clare. If James was born in Millport, NY. instead of Ireland that means that this family came to the US before 1851. Can anyone confirm this IGR. Thanks, Jim

Anne & Allan Clare (b. @1160), Fitz Alwine connection

Folks,

Had an inquiry from a fellow researcher in Finland, looking for information on the following:

He's looking for the parents of Anne and Allan Clare who were both born in England about 1158-1162. Allan Clare was married about 1179-1181 to Elisabeth/Elizabeth Alwine who´s father was Sir Fitz Alwine, Mayor of London. He's also curious to know who, if anyone, Anne married.

I do know that in 1189, Fitz Alwine, Mayor of London, held his first assize, from which we learn that the Master Carpenters and Masons of the City were to be sworn not to prejudice the ancient rights ordained of the estates of the City.

My second great grandmother was Mary Ann CLARE ALLEN. I have her death certificate that claims her birthplace was Picton, Ontario, Canada (13 August 1841). A biography of her son states she was born in Wexford, Ireland. Her parents were Michael Clare and Bridget Welsh both born in Ireland. Mary Ann Clare married Alphonso Allen sometime around 1860. They lived in Lewiston, New York and are both buried there. Mary Ann had a child "Andrew J." born in Canada before her marriage to Alphonso Allen.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone working on Canadian Clares or Clares from Wexford Ireland....

-Mary

Clare Moffitt (male person) of Washington State

I am trying to find information on Clare Moffitt born July 30, 1885 died May 1975. He married Lena Lambdin. They lived in Seattle, King Co., Washington at one time. I feel certain this man who has the first name of Clare is named for his mother's maiden name. If that is so it would mean a Miss Clare married a Mr. Moffitt ca.1884. Thanks Carolyn

Kathleen Maud Clare

This is my first attempt to find out something about my natural mother, Kathleen Maud Clare. After I was born, in April 1934, she named me Arnold RobertClare but gave me up for adoption. At the time that she registered my birth she was working as cinema attendant and lived at 55 Ravenstone Road, Hendon, UK. This seems to me to be a 'long shot' but if anyone knows something about her I would really like to hear about it.
