I think I am going to need some more clues. I do not have a Brian Clarkston in my database and the one Jack Clarkston I have is too young to be your grandfather, plus the given hame of Jack is often a nickname, so I am afraid I need to ask you for some more clues. What is your grandmother's maiden name? Approximately when was your grandfather born? Is Jack short for Jackson or a nickname for John? If you prefer, you can email me directly at ecbingham@frii.com

Thanks

Andrew, if you can give me the names of your father and grandfather on your Clarkston side of the family, I will check to see you if you are connected to the Clarkston family I have researched. Our database is pretty extensive on the family I have.

I am part of the project. If your last name was spelled originally Claxon, Claxson or Clackson, as mine was, the origin is Danish. Probably from King Harold KLak and Harold Klackson, whose sons, Harold Bluetooth and Svein Forkbeard, who invaded East Anglia and Essex in @920. Clacton on Sea was The Village of Clacks Sons in early days.
The name means Stone Cutter/ Hatchling depending on origin.
A very ancient name, whether Saxon or Dane. ( Saxon is Clac).
Klak is probably the sound an implement makes when carving on stone.
Rich

Hi, my name is Elton Bingham. I am maintaining a website on the descendants of Thomas Clarkston & Nellie Feathers plus a tree on the public member trees on Ancestry.com.

Feel free to check out the website. The URL is:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/i/n/Elton-C-Bin...

We have had two descendants of Thomas Clarkston contribute a DNA sample so far. One was a descendant of Samuel Clarkston & wife Nancy Jane Reynolds and the other from one of the other sons of Thomas Clarkston. There is an article on the DNA results for this family in the "stories" section of the website listed above. The DNA testing has been done by Family Tree DNA. You can check out their website and the project is the Claxton, Clarkston, Clarkson project. If you would like more information about the Clarkston family, feel free to write to me at the email that I have registered on rootsweb.com or that is listed on the website given above. I would be happy to send you an invite to the tree on Ancestry.com as well when I get your email address. We would be happy to have any contributions to the tree or the photo album that you would like to contribute.

Thanks,

Elton Bingham
My father was Rudolphf, one of six children of Samuel and Spicy.

Re: James M. Clark/ston and Catherine Sturgill

I do not have any information to contribute regarding the Native American background of a grandmother of Ed Sturgill, but I wondered if you had anything to contribute about the first marriage of John Calvin Sturgill.

Here is what I have:

John Calvin Sturgill married Alpha E. Clark 4 Oct 1890 in Harlan County, KY. Alpha was the daughter of William Oliver Clark and Martha Ann McKinney. Alpha was born Mar 1872 and died 3 Apr 1935 in Norton, Wise, VA.

John Calvin Sturgill and Alpha E. Clark had the following children:

Chester Arthur Sturgill (b. 30 Sep 1891, d. 9 Mar 1925, m. Rosa E. Stidham)
Martha J. Sturgill (b. 4 may 1893, d. 21 Dec 1924, m. (1) D C Boone, (2) Millard H Collier
William Sturgill (b. about 1895)
Sylvan Sturgill (b. 16 Feb 1900, d. 31 Jul 1896, m. Lily Mae Fleenor)
Annie Sturgill (b. about 1903)

John C Sturgill & Alpha E Clark divorced prior to 1909 as John C. Sturgill marries Annie Banks 11 Jan 1909 in Harlan KY and Alpha E Clark marries George Douglas McPheron 1 Dec 1908 in Harlan KY.

The information I have on the above children of John Calvin and Alpha named Annie and William is rather sparse. I would appreciate anything you could contribute regarding them or any of the rest of this family.

I do have a copy of the death certificate of John Calvin Sturgill I would be happy to send a copy of to you if you don't have that.
I am the G-grandaughter of Elijah Sturgill who was born in Ashe Co NC. That leads me to believe that he might have lived in Indian territory during this time era. My papaw Ed Sturgill, son of Annie Banks Sturgill and John Calvin Sturgill, said that his grandmother was cherokee. He himself looks part indian. I am trying to find out if it is Louvina Emaline Creech M. JC Sturgill or Sara Sally Hall Annie's mother? Do you know? I am Sandra Sturgill Weston
Yes, I found quite a listing for these children. When you put in John Calvin Sturgill+Va there is link that will pop up about the Sturgill family, then it lists names.

Clarkson, Clarkston, Claxton of Colonial Va.

As the DNA project surname administrator, I am trying to find references to earlier Clarkson/Clarkston/Claxton families in the records. It seems to be that we are all stuck in the 1800s, early or late, and if we can find some folks working on these earlier lines, and perhaps DNA project participants, we will be able to connect ourselves together.

Therefore over the next few days/weeks, I am going to be posting things I find. I would ask anyone else who has early records in the Tennessee/Kentucky feeder states to please post them too.

John – 1647 – York Co. Va
John – 1680 – Barbados
David – 1699, 1702, 1704, 1717 – New Kent Co., Va. – associated with Butts family
His son John b 1710
His dau Frances d 1710
Peter’s wife Johanna died Feb 1711/12 – New Kent
David Jr’s dau christened – 1715 –New Kent
David marries Elizabeth Jackson 1715 – New Kent
William – 1716 – Lancaster Co.
Robert – 1719 – New Kent
Elizabeth died 1719 – New Kent
David died 1720- New Kent
Elizabeth died 1710 – 2 days after David – New Kent
Dick born to Susannah 1726 – New Kent
John – 1726 – New Kent
James – 1728 – New Kent

Note – Julius Clarkson seems to be related to this Butts family as the name Butts resurrects in the Julius Clarkson descendants.

Julius if found in Louisa and Albemarle Co. Va and then migrated to Bourbon Co Ky. We find he and other Clarksons, including another David, in Bourbon Co. before 1800.

This information was extracted from a much larger and more robust article at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~greenwolf/clarkson/....

Bobbi Estes

Clarkston DNA Testing Funding Available

We now have several results back and some success stories from the /ClarkstonClaxton/Clarkson DNA Surname project. Several people have contributed funds for their kinfolk to be tested, and as a result, we have a significant amount of matching funds made available that will expire at the end of 2004 if not used. I hate to leave this money on the table - so please use it if you're considering testing at all.

Four $25 contributions are available (one per test kit) and one is available at $21. These can be used by new participants or anyone wanting to upgrade their tests already performed. These offers expire at the end of 2004.

I also have a full scholarship available for any /ClarkstonClaxton/Clarkson male descending from James Clarkson/Claxton who was born about 1775, died 1815 and lived in Lee Co Va with several male descendents. This offer does not expire.

If you are interested or have questions, please contact me directly or feel free to visit our website provided to us for this testing. I'll list the link at the end of this message.

If you want to order tests or upgrades, I'll apply these contributed scholarships on a first come first serve basis.

If you descend from James and are a Clarkson/Claxton name carrying (and therefore DNA carrying) male, contact me directly and I'll arrange for your free kit to be sent.

Our web site is:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Clarkson%2DClaxton/

For analysis of received results, contact me personally.

Happy New Years everyone!!

Roberta Estes (Descended from James of Lee Co.)
Clarkson/Claxton/Clarkston Family DNA Surname Project Administrator

Pat, Kristina,
25 years ago, I published a book "Bonds of Union, Vol I" about this family. Since that time, my "online" book (url below); has added a huge amount to the 1980 book, and made corrections to a multitude of errors. I have continued to research this family and have never been able to determine the parentage of Nellie.
I, too, would like to see a copy of the bible page. It would be easier for both you and me if you would visit our online book to see what we have gathered from source records and family traditions.

We would love to have you join our efforts
Thanks,
Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/v/a/n/Gloria-kay-...

Josephine or Jasmine Clark or Clarkston d. feb 1867 Harlan Co, KY

Does ANYONE have ANYTHING to contribute regarding this individual?

Josephine or Jasmine Clark or Clarkston, estimated birth date approximately 1850 either in Lee Co, VA or Harlan Co, KY, and she would most likely have been the Daughter of Catherine Clark/ston who never married that we know of.

First, we have found a death certificate of Mary Elizabeth Clark Garrison, granddaughter of Catherine, whom we have long believed to be the daughter of Elender (dau of Catherine). Mary Elizabeth shows up as an eleven year old granddaughter in the household of Catherine Clark in the 1880 census of Harlan Co, KY.

Mary Elizabeth was the wife of Isaac Garrison. Her death certificate names her parents as Milton Huff and Josephine Clark (who were not married ... Milton Huff was married to Nancy McKinney). The informant was Mary Elizabeth's son, Noah Jennings Garrison, and he might have been unclear about his grandparents, especially since they were not married. And then, perhaps he knew more than we are giving him credit for.

The second document comes from a hand-written extraction from the diary of Williah Short, which cites a death date of 4 Feb 1876 (probably in Harlan Co, KY) of a Jasermine? or Josephine? (writing is not as legible on this particular item as we would have liked). This entry is included along with/near those of the death dates of Catherine Clark/ston, and Catherine's daughter, El Clark

Aside from that, we have never yet found any other document to suggest even the existence of this Josephine/Jasmine Clark

ANY and ALL contributions on this individual are MOST welcome.
Thanks, Kay
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/v/a/n/Gloria-kay-...

Catherine Sturgill, b. 8 Feb 1855 Harlan Co, KY; daughter of Eli G. Sturgill and Emaline Louvina Creech. Catherine married 1 Jul 1880 Wise Co, VA to James M. Clarkston/Clark, son of Thomas Clarkston and Nancy Weaver. Catherine then died 4 mar 1891 Wise Co, VA. Her husband, James, did not die until 19 jul 1931, also in Wise Co, VA.

James and Catherine were married 11 years before her death. If they had any children, they were all born between 1880 and 1891 when the census records are missing.

Does anyone have any children listed for this family?

Did James marry again?

Thanks, Kay
Clarkston Co-op Research and allied lines;
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/v/a/n/Gloria-kay-...

Hi Roberta,
I really hate to be a wet blanket in this matter, as I am as anxious as you are to find a link between these two families. However, the David and James you are referring to cannot be the sons of Thomas Clarkston of Lee Co VA, as James is not James R, but James Madison Clarkston, and David, son of Thomas, was not born until ca 1836 ... much too late to be the David you found.

I find the Yeary connection extremely interesting, and I intend to research these individuals much more closely. I will let you know if I come up with anything of interest.
Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/v/a/n/Gloria-kay-...

Re: Clarkston Surname Family Update

Hi Bobbi,

I would be happy to update the DNA analysis page if you send me the information.

It sounds as though you have quite a bit more information on my Thomas Clarks(t)on of Lee Co, VA. I am VERY anxious to review that. Please contact me at CCC.Research@att.net.

Regarding the DNA testing. We have one, and possibly two individuals from the Thomas Clarkston line who may do the yDNA test. We also have had 1 female do the mtDNA test, hoping to find some conclusive evidence regarding her descent from Nellie (Feathers), wife of Thomas Clarkston of Lee co, VA. The test showed she did NOT have Indian descent from the maternal line of Nellie (Feathers). That does not rule out the possibility that Nellie's father might have been Indian, just not her mother.

One more thought I think we should share. I too, took the mtDNA test ... the results have no bearing on our Clark/Clarkson/Clarkston research, but thought we should share that the PROCESS is so very simple and indeed, painless. The entire process simply consists of swabbing the inside of your cheek with a mildly abrasive swab, and sending the packet back to the company. Voila, 'tis done. Easy and Painless. I highly recommend it.

Hoping to hear from you soon,
Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/v/a/n/Gloria-kay-...

Kay--thanks for info
no knowledge of Alexander E. Johnson. Mary died in 1924 at Berea. I think George stayed for a couple years, then moved family back to Knott Co. My father (Joe ) never mentioned Clay co. in 1930 . Eugene is still living , I will ask him about that. I would like to see the Clay Co. census, in what household were they listed? thanks
Joe

Randy, I am very interested in the family linage you mentioned. I am descended from Samuel Clarkston born abt 1811 and married to Nancy Jane Reynolds. Is this the same Samuel you are talking about? The only Eversole I have listed in the family is Jane Eversole who married Esquire Clarkston Sept. 29, 1890 in Leslie Co., KY. Is she related to Hannah Baker Eversole? And who were the parents of Spicy Margaret Clarkston? Please get in touch.
I do have a Clarkston family moving from Shelby Co, KY to Jennings Co, IN and spreading out from there.
Wm Clarkson/Clarkston/Claxon b.abt 1775 VA?

am searching for any information regarding WILLIAM CLARKS(T)ON and all spelling variations, who was born est. Abt. 1775 in VA. He married BARBARA (....).

He shows up in the court orders (unindexed) March 28, 1809, Lee Co VA, bk 1, pg 72, Wm on Grand Jury of Inquest; May 24, 1808, Lee Co VA, bk 1, pg 1, Wm on Grand Jury of Inquest; August 23, 1808, Lee Co VA, bk 1, pg 33, Wm on Grand Jury of Inquest; August 22, 1809, Lee Co VA, bk 1, pg 122, Wm on Grand Jury of Inquest; and last, March 27, 1810, Lee Co VA, bk 1, pg 168, indenture of Bargain and sale from William Clerkson and Barbary, his wife to James Wiley; wit John Dixon and Benjamin Davis; This is where he sold the property purchased in the following Deed; August 24, 1800, Lee Co VA, bk1 pg 217 Nathaniel Taylor of Carter Co, TN to William Clarkston of Lee Co, VA, 100 acres in Turkey Cove, boundaries mentioned north side of Wallings ridge; wit Elijah King, Randal Collier, Joseph Head, recorded 9 dec 1800.
I do not have a census record for him, but he should show up in 1800 in Lee Co, VA. He does show up on the Land Tax 1802-1809, always with 100 acres. He also shows up on the pers prop tax rolls each year from 1795-1807 and again 1809, then disappears (sold out in the last court order). I don't know where he came FROM, or where he WENT. There is a William and Barbara about the same age range, that show up in Shelby Co, KY in 1810, but can not find any logical link between these two William and Barbaras. The later, migrated to Jennings Co, IN.

Does anyone have a list of children for this couple? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Kay Inman
