Pioneer Families of Missouri

Callaway County

The county of Callaway was named for the gallant Captain James Callaway, who was killed by the Indians at Loutre creek, on the 7th of March, 1815. The county was organized Nov. 25, 1820, out of the territory of Montgomery Co. The first county seat was at a place called Elizabeth, situated on Ham's Prairie, about 6 miles south of Fulton. It remained there until 1826, when the seat of justice was permanently located at Fulton. The latter place was founded in 1824, by MR. GEORGE NICHOLS, and was at first called Volney, for the celebrated French author; but the name was soon after changed to Fulton, in honor of Robert Fulton, the great applyer of steam to navigation. The dates of the various early settlements in Callaway Co., are given in connection with the histories of families, and it is not necessary to repeat them here.

BURCH, Leonard Burch, of Maryland, was married twice; first to a MISS WEBSTER, by whom he had James, Thomas, John and Nancy; and second to a MISS CROW, by whom he had Stiman, Stephen, Sally, Susan and Catharine.

James, the eldest son by his first wife, was married in 1806 to MARY PADGETT, of VA., by whom he had Lucy, Thomas, Nelson, Joseph, and Nancy. He died in 1816, and in 1841 his widow and two of her daughters settled in Callaway Co., MO., where the former died in 1853. Thomas, son of Leonard Burch, married the widow of THOMAS HALL, whose maiden name was SUSAN S. CLARBY, of Amherst Co., VA. He settled in Callaway Co., in 1830. Joseph, son of James burch, married ELIZABETH CHANEY, of Boone Co., MO., and settled in Callaway Co. in 1831. Lucy, his sister, married JAMES L. WHITTINGTON, of Callaway Co. Nancy never married and died in Bates Co., MO.

Newton,
Thank you for the info on Callaway Co.
What was the big attraction there for this family, did they have other relatives there? Perhaps Mary Padgett, James's widow had relatives there? And the others followed?
I understand that Mary Padgett was the daughter of an Ephraim Padgett of Amherst Co., VA.
I didn't have anything on James and Mary's children, except for Lucy. I DID have that Lucy and James L Whittington married in Amherst Co., VA in Sept of 1838 and had six Whittington children: James A., Stephen E., Mary L., Martha L., William T., and John A. I did not realize that Mary's husband was from Callaway Co.
Was it James Burch's daughter Nancy that never married and died in MO? Because I have a relationship for Nancy the daughter of Leonard Burch - with a John Nichols. I have that Nancy and John had 15 children between the year of 1794 and 1817! My info says that THIS Nancy died in Barren Co., KY.
The only two of Leonard Burch's children by his second wife "Crow" that I have additional information on is Stephen and Simeon. From what I understand Leonard's second wife (like his son's Simeon's) was almost 20 years younger than him?
That he married her some time around 1785 - a couple years after Monica Guy Webster died and that HE died in VA.
Simeon Burch (possibly Stiman) was born in 1790 and died in 1870 in Allwood, VA Amherst County. He was 80 years old!
Thanks once again, for taking the time to look all this up for me.

x. VIRGINIA H. "JENNIE" SPENCER, b. January 06, 1856, Nelson Co. Va.; d. March 28, 1940, Nelson Co. Va.; m. FRANK P. SIMPSON, December 10, 1874, Nelson Co. Va..

Notes for FRANK P. SIMPSON:
Frank was found in both the 1860 and the1870 Census. In the 1860 census
he lives in Prince William County at Bristoe Post Office this is not far from Manassas.
He is then 11 years old and is shown as Francis P. Must have not liked Francis
so he changed it to Frank He is living with his father John, brother Charles W and sister Sarah J. There was a older brother named John 15 years
old he did not show up in the 1870 Nelson County Census . There was no mother listed here, but since brother Charles W was listed as being born in Prince William County his mother must have died. Good chance she died in childbirth
when Charles was born.
The marriage records of Nelson County Shows Frank P. Simpson and Virginia Spencer being married by a Minister named J.R. Roberts
Virginia was also known as Jennie, They both are buried at the cemetery of the old Walnut Grove Baptist Church. The Church is no longer there , but the cemetery is in pretty good Shape. It is located about 3/4 mile from the start of what was called the Ridge Road. Virginia's headstone says Virginia Hill Simpson Mawyer. IN 1919 Jennie married a H.S. Mawyer of Albemarle County.

This Information was gathered from Grave Stone at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, US Census records

Note: Not a complete survey of the cemeteries: needs to be compared with Elsberry and other subsequent cemetery surveys. Because it was done so early, it did located a number of stones that have subsequently disappeared. There appear to be comparatively few misreadings or typos. The following limitations were stated in the preface:
"In compiling this book, every tombstone of adults in Boone County was copied where the _birth_ date was prior to 1860. Fifty-two churches and cemeteries are included and fifty-nine old family burying grounds are copied."
Thus, it omitted graves of children, and must be supplemented for purposes of family reconstitution.
The compilers noted that in many Boone County cemeteries, there were numerous old graves with no tombstones.

Calloway County Veterans List
Part 4 The Civil War Veterans
Missouri Telegraph 19 September 1899
Ex-Confederates Meet and Discuss the Exploits of Other Days

We have tried in vain to obtain the number and names of the men who entered the Confederate army from Callaway county. No records of them had ever been preserved, either by the officers who commanded the men, or by the Confederate government. In all thirteen companies entered the southern army from Callaway county, commanded by the following officer: D. H. McIntyre, I. N. Sitton, David Craig, Milton Scholl, Huron Burt, Thomas Holland, Creed Carter, George Brooks, Thomas Hamilton, Jefferson Gibbs, Robert Berry, Preston Wilkerson, and George Law. From the best information we can obtain the number of men, who from first to last united their fortune with the Confederate army, were somewhere between eight and eleven hundred. To show that Callaway's sympathies were strongly southern we compare the 13 Confederate companies with the three companies of Union soldiers commanded by Wm. T, Snell, Henry Thomas and J. P. Johnson. From the old files of the Missouri Telegraph we get the data of the only engagement that ever took place in this county. At Moore's mill, seven miles northeast of Fulton, on July 29, 1862, a battle was fought between the 350 Confederates under Colonel Porter and the 850 Federals under Colonel Guitar. The fight lasted for two hours and was one of the hardest fought and hotly contested battles that took place during the war of Rebellion, considering the numbers engaged and the circumstances by which the Union troops were surrounded.

I saw your postings on the genforum for this surname.

I was looking for an Arthur Looney Mathews (b 1858) on the 1880 census on the familysearch.org site. I was surprised to find him up in Atchison, Clinton Co, MO living with his brother-in-law, J. P. Clasby. Until I saw this, I did not know that Arthur even had a sister named Alice.

J. P Clasby (b. VA) and Alice (Mathews) Clasby had a three year old son named Eugene M Clasby. I went to the MO birth records and verified this record with the 1880 census. The mother's maiden name was given as "MATHEWS,"

Arthur Looney Mathews & Alice Mathews' parents were Isom Looney Mathews and Nancy Diana McKinsey and they lived in Benton Co. MO.

Do you know anything about who this CASBY'S parents were? I can't find any record (so far) of them being a Benton Co, MO family.

Hopefully, this message will reach you and you will have this child in your database! I would like to know what happened to this family. I tried to find Eugene Clasby in the Social Security Death Index, but didn't find anything on him.

Thanks,

Dee Mathews
Independence MO

Notes for ROBERT E. CLASBY:
#3387: HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY KENTUCKY, by Robert Peter, ed. by William
H. Perrin, O. L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern
Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979.Page 780. ROBERT E. CLASBY, farmer,

Rucker, of Bourbon County. After a short term at school, the lad became a
carpenter's apprentice, and when he had become a journeyman, at the age of
nineteen years, he went to Missouri; worked at his trade for four years in
that State, and for four years longer in Bourbon County, Ky., whiter he had
returned, and where he married, January 16, 1848, Martha, daughter of Jacob
Hutsell. He next went to farming, and has continued in that occupation to
the present time, having now one of the finest farms in Fayette County,
consisting of 238 acres of excellent land in Brier Hill Precinct, and lying
alongside the Bryant's Station & Chilesburg road. He is a large breeder of
Short-Horn cattle.
His wife is a member of Antioch Christian Church. They have eight Children:
Mary Catharine, Georgiana, William Thomas, Edward, Jacob, Mattie G.,
Walter and Robert. William is married to miss Mattie Downing, and Jacob
lives in Missouri.
