Hello again, this will be my last posting on this message board as I haven't had any replies, leading me to think that no one with any info about my cousin Lee Clasby is monitoring it. I leave my phone #607-227-7201(talk or text) in hopes that someone will contact me.

Hi Sharon. You probably don't know me but I am Lee's cousin James Norman Clasby. All my relatives called me Norman. I saw Michelle 's post a few days ago and responded but I haven't heard anything back. I would like to get in touch but this seems like the only option for now. My email is jcsdog6@Gmail.com or ph#607-227-7201 text or talk. Thanks for any help.

Hi my name is James Norman Clasby, best known to family as Norman. Lee and I were very close as kids up until he died. We didn't have a lot of time together because my dad was in the airforce and we were stationed first in Germany, then Spokane WA, then finally Ithaca NY.,where I am now. Your name sounds familiar, were you living in Georgia for a while? If so we probably know each other from family reunions in the 60's. I've left a message on this board for his daughter but haven't received a response. If you would like to contact me more directly my PH# is 607-227-7201 voice or text, or email jcsdog6@Gmail.com. looking forward to hearing from you. _
Hi I'm James. Norman Clasby, Lee's first cousin. I never heard who was involved, or exactly how they did it, or even why. I only heard that there were 3 of them and they hit him with a hammer, and that drugs may have been the reason. I was down there the summer before and he said that he thought someone was out to kill him but he didn't know why. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Belinda, my name is James Norman Clasby. I am a cousin too. I'm not sure if we have ever met, but my fathers name was Paul N. Clasby, and we spent a few summer vacations in Bigstone. As I remember we had family reunions in August. I would really like to hear back. Maybe I'll finally get back to Bigstone, I haven't been back since Lee's funeral.

Hi I am c. Lee's cousin. My dad was Lee's fahters youngest brother. From what I understand they were very close growing up.Coleman was killed in a car accident in1954 or 56, I was only 5at the time. So Lee (that's what he was called ) grew up w/out really knowing him. My father, Paul was in the airforce and we were stationed in Germany, Spokane, and then Ithaca NY, where I live. I was very close to your father because every vacation we could, we drove from Spokane to Bigstone. 5 days to, and 5days back. From what I understand, he was killed by 3 guys. 2 were friends at one time. I was a deputy sheriff at the time and went to the funeral. That was the last time I went to Bigstone. I would like to visit again but I don't know anyone there. Do you know if Ruth is still around? I have more stories, and family info to share. Please text back.

Clasby is thought to be a name of Viking origin that settled in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (Giving rise to placenames like Cleasby, Claxby and Claxby Pluckacre.) Over time they moved round the coast to Suffolk, Essex and round into Hampshire. Clasby is thought to mean Klaas's (Klaus, Nicholas)village -by suffix denoting a farmstead or hamlet.
I do not believe there is any connection at all between the names Clasby and Gillespie.. Clasby is two syllables, Gillespie is three.. the similarity is tenuous at best

Hi tatterdemalion2

I dont know if you'd read back on this thread but I'll just repeat something I wrote in reply to another querent regards the names Gillespie and Clasby. "I now do not believe that they are connected [Clasby and Gillespie]. I was going on the Clasby Heraldry theme that my father had done one time" (and is currently held to be as such at http://www.houseofnames.com/clasby-family-crest). However someone on another site (who had researched it) suggested that the name Clasby (apparently) comes from The vikings (having a by on the end like selby for instance. A place that is known to be Viking in origin). The main two viking raids into England left Clasby's all across the South coastal regions particularly Dorset and Hampshire (Gudren's invasion). According to this guy also there were NO Clasby's in Ireland prior to the late 17th century. (They probably arrived in Cromwell's army). Gillespie came from gillesbuig. (the servant of the bishop). The heraldry people put the two together (see site mentioned above).

Anyway it appears that there is no connection between the two names other than their sound.

I'm intrigued what on earth is a UK one name research project

Steve
Hi Kevin

Its been a long time but i hope you get this at some point. Isn't it strange how you only know that Kate had 4 sisters and I only know that my dad had two brothers. (there must have been Sisters) Also, as my Grand father would have been of a similar age to Kate it is quite probable in a place as small as Toureen that they were related. The present incumbent of the small holding in Toureen is called Edward (if he is still alive. His brother Stephen also lives in the area. I know there are cousins also in the area, and Edwards father was called John (my dad's brother). Edward and Stephen have another two brothers and about six sisters.

If you research or even write to Edward Clasby in Toureen I'm sure you'll find out stuff. You might even find that your cousins know them if they are in the area.

Steve

Re: Daniel J. Clasby

Here is a family narrative that we have which includes Daniel J. Clasby. Dates listed are approximate. He is my great-great-grandfather.

=====================

Frank J. Clasby, the only son of Daniel J. Clasby, married Alice Florence MacKinnon. Not much is known about her family except that her father was born in Scotland and her mother was born in Maine. They had nine children altogether, although only seven lived: Chester (born +/- 1898), Daniel (born +/- 1899), Alice (born 1901, died 1977), Mildred (born +/- 1904, Doris (born +/- 1906), Phyllis (born +/- 1908), and Edna (born +/- 1915). Edna had a twin brother who died at birth. There was also a daughter Olive who died very young.

The 1920 census shows the family of Frank and Alice Clasby (my mother's grandparents) living on Ash Street in Waltham. Frank and his four oldest children worked in the Waltham Watch Factory as machine operators. Chester and Daniel served in WWI and were noted as being awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and promoted in rank on the fields of France in 1917.

Alice Gertrude Clasby, daughter of Frank and Alice, was working as a nurse at the Fenway Hospital in Boston when she met Michael Kelly from Ireland. His aunts (by the name of Rogers) owned the hospital and he would come over to America to visit. Michael Kelly was the youngest child of Ellen Shiel and ?? Kelly, who lived in Derry, Northern Ireland. Michael Kelly owned a hotel called the Metropole Hotel. Alice left America and moved to Ireland to marry Michael Kelly in 1937 at the age of 36. They had four children: Mildred, Michael, Frank, and John.

Michael Kelly died in Boston on March 8, 1965. Alice Clasby Kelly died May 1, 1977.
=======================

If you are connected to any of these families, I would love to chat and share info! Please contact me at azpattersons@cox.net.

Maryanne Patterson
Hi, I am looking for information on John Clasby who lived in Boston Mass. in the 1880s. I believe he was born in Ireland as was his wife (possibly Catherine). His daughter Annie Maria was my great-grandmother, and she was born in Boston in the 1860s. I have a photo album (which I assume was hers) of pictures of people taken in Boston USA; Kilkenny and Castlebar, Ireland; Leeds and Edinburgh UK. However I have no idea who any of these people might be!
Re: Ellen Clasby

My great-grandmother was Bridget Clasby. She was born in Staffordshire (Wolverhampton) England and she was living in the Wolverhampton Work House in 1881 with her sister Margaret since they were orphaned. Their mother died between 1870-1871 (Mary) and their father died between 1871-1881. It looks like Ellen was placed at the Preventive Mission House at the time of her father's death.

Bridget immigrated to the USA with Margaret in 1882. They settled in Amsterdam, NY and worked in one of the knitting or carpet mills there. Bridget married William Nolan in 1888. They had 6 children (my grandfather was their 5th child, William)

My records also indicate that there was a brother (John) who was born in 1858. Also, it looks like John (Sr.) and wife Mary immigrated from Ireland to Staffordshire, England between 1851-1858. I'm not sure yet if son John was born in Ireland or England. I tend to think Ireland...

Please contact me (ksnolan_285@hotmail.com) and we can compare notes. I have few pictures that are known to be Bridget. Maybe if you have pictures we can check for resemblances.
