Hello I have a robert clasper (b1876) in my family tree, his birth cert is listing his mother as Margaret Elliot and his father as Robert Clasper - have a look at my tree as Ive posted copies of the certificates so you can see if they're relevant to you.

Hi Louise,

Robert Clasper b. 1785 married Jane Hawks in 1807 at St Mary's Whickham, they had 11 children. Jane died in 1832 and is buried at St Mary's, Robert then married Mary Elliot/Ellis in 1834 and had another 4 children before Robert died in 1841 and is also buried with his wife and two of his sons, Edward & John, who died in their twenties. Robert and Jane had a son Robert b. 1818 who married Mary Duff in 1838.

Robert b. 1803 is not part of this family and I have no idea whether he was married before his marrige to Mary Dewar in 1834.

I forgot to mention it in my last message, the marriage you are looking for in the IGI is under the name of Glasper not Clasper, this also is the case with the 1841 Census & some references in the free BMD database.

I am pretty sure that Robert age 7 in the 1851 Census is the one you are looking for, I had the same conundrum as you are having now when I tried to figure out which Robert married which Mary, in the end I ordered a birth certificate for Jane Clasper listed above,here's the readout from it:

1840 in the sub district of Gateshead in the County of Durham
20th of November at Pipewellgate Shore, Jane,Girl,Father Robert Glasper, Mother Mary Glasper, formely Dewar, The mark "+" of Robert Glasper, father, Pipewellgate Shore.

The other two Robert Claspers you mention are father & son, Robert Clasper the elder married Mary Ellis/Elliot in 1834 second marriage) and his son married Mary Duff in 1838.

i have been on the igi index but have not found the right one as yet

There are two Robert Claspers who married Mary's a few months apart both were from Whickham, both were Watermen and both married at St John's, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Robert #1 was born 1785 in Whickham and married Mary Elliot AKA Ellis, which was his second wife, 22 March 1834, this Robert had two surviving children from his marriage to Mary Elliot/Ellis, Thomas, b. 1836 & Mary Ann b. 1837. This Robert died in 1841 and is buried in Whickham Churchyard near his illustrious son Henry "Harry" Clasper's monument.

Robert #2 was born 1803 in Whickham and married Mary Dewar 20th July 1834, they had at least five children: David b. 1836, Whickham; Elizabeth, b. 1837, Birtley; Mary, b. 1838, Gateshead; Jane, b. 1840, Gateshead, & Robert, b. 1844, Gateshead.

My connection to this is via Robert Clasper #1, whereas yours is via Robert Clasper #2. The two Roberts are distantly related I think, they appear to come together with John Clasper & Mary Charlton, m. 7 Jun 1720 in Ponteland, Northumberland.

Your line looks something like this (I think):
Robert b. 14 Sep 1803, bp. 20 Nov 1803, Whickham
Siblings: Isabella, bp 26 Feb 1797, WH; Jane, bp 5 Jan 1799, WH; James, bp. 6 Sep 1801, WH; & William, bp. 6 Feb 1806, WH.

Robert, bp. 21 May 1769, WH, m. Elizabeth Nicholson, 7 Sep 1795, WH.

Henry, bp 12 Aug 1735, Ponteland, m. Isabel Campbell, m. 6 Sep 1761, Newburn, Northumberland.

John, m. Mary Charlton 7 Jun 1720, Ponteland.

his wife's name is mary elliott born in about 1803 in newcastle

I am researching Thomas CLASPER b.abt 1831, Newcastle upon Tyne. He married Jane Woolston ERRINGTON in 1855, Newcastle upon Tyne.

I can find him, his wife and children on the 1861 Census, but nothing before. (Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3679; Folio: 86; Page: 24; GSU roll: 543171.)

I am interested to learn of his parentage.

Very slack on sources I'm afraid, this was obtained from soemone who had access to the NBL Marriage Index.
Afraid this can only be confirmed if you can check the NBL Marriage Index and/or the PR's for St.Johns.

So what you are saying in your last post is that the second Mary is Mary Elliot, married to Robert Clasper (b.1803) at St Johns Newcastle in 1834?

Is that a definite or a maybe?

I think that the Keelman/ Cinder Burner reference is the same family, they started out in Swalwell, Whickham, where they had three baptisms (ref: Whickham PR) then moved to Gateshead via Birtley (see 1851 Census Gateshead, HO 107/2402 f29 pg50 sch184 Redheugh)

I count 7 baptisms for this family, 3 in Whickham, one in Birtley and three in Gateshead.

I have the cert for Mary Ann Clasper somewhere, for some reason it is not in its file, but I know from memory that her mother was Mary, formerly Ellis,(no mention of Nicholson) when I find it I will forward the details.

The question I am asking is:
Was Mary Ellis the Mary Elliot who married Robert Clasper at St Johns, Newcastle in 1834 or could this be the other Mary whos surname I don't know who married Robert Clasper (b 1803, Whickham)around the same time, which is the second family of the two in my last post?

I note that Robert (b. 1803) was son of Robert & Elizabeth Nicholson of Swalwell, Whickham. I wonder if that is where the Nicholson name crept in....

I suppose the only way I am going to resolve the mystery of Mary's maiden name is to obtain a Birth Certificate for Mary (b. 1839) or Jane (b. 1840)....

I just have Ellis, taken from daughter Mary Ann's birth Certificate of 1837, not found any reference to the Name Nicholson as yet, From what I can see from the Whickham PR Robert and Mary (Ellis) had three children, Thomas, b. 1834. Joseph,b. 1836,d. 1836. Mary Ann, b. 1837, there also may be John, b. 1840, d. 1841, but I am not sure about that one as yet.

Robert must have married his second wife Mary presumably sometime between the death of his first wife Jane (nee' Hawks) in 1832 and the birth of their first child Thomas in 1834.

Their third child, Mary Ann was born just after Civil Registration began in 1837 and her birth certificate gives her maiden name as Ellis. When I looked into Mary's family I found that she was the eldest of nine children born to John Ellis & Dorothy Smart, of the nine, six have the surname Ellis and three the surname Elliot.

There is a marriage at St Johns, Newcastle 22 March 1834 between Robert Clasper & Mary Elliot, the problem is that this could be either Robert (1785) or Robert (1803) who also married a Mary whos surname I don't know, could be Elliot....So, I have two Roberts marrying Mary's but only one marriage. Does anyone know what Robert (b. 1803) wifes surname was?

I have Robert CLASPER in the Union Workhouse, Crossgate, Durham, England ~ Pauper, formerly Pitman in the 1851 Census. I believe he died in 1852, Durham, England.

I can only find one Robert CLASPER in the 1841 Census (on Ancestry) and he was married to Susannah Hymers.

From my records I think you will have to say, at least for now, that Judith died before 1837. There were a number of Roberts around in FreeBMD and 1841 census, did you pinpoint this one dying?

They had one son that I know of ~ George Clasper, b. 7 Sep 1821
in Jarrow, Durham, England.

Does anyone know when/where Judith Clasper died and was buried ~ I've done a lot of trawling through records, but to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

I suppose my best bet is to order her marriage cert. to George CLASPER to find out her father's name.

There's an Elizh McNaughton (b.1828, Northumberland) living just the other side of the river. Perhaps added a few years to her age later?

searching for Dora Jane (Hunter) nee Clasper b1892 d1945

I have not been able to locate anything in Census listings or other places for any details prior to above.

Elizabeth McNAUGHTON m. George GLASPER (proper spelling with a 'C') at St.Mary's, Hedworth, Durham in 1843.

It states on the 1851 England Census that Elizabeth was born in Jarrow.

I have looked on the 1841 England Census but can only find one McNAUGHTON family living in Jarrow at that time and Elizabeth is not included in the list.
