Hello Hazel, thank you for all the information that you have given me. I have bought a lot of certificates building up the family tree and found that Sarah Jane died Dec 28th in Crickhowell but didn't realise that she had another child by George Evans.I have also found 12 children from her marriage to John Clatworthy including Louisa b 1882 and died March 1883, Ruth b 1890 died Dec 1890 and Edith b 1896 and died July 1896.I have not been able to find the marriage of Lavina to Evans.
Rachael and William got married 1902 and had Earnest John b1903 who d 1903- Harriet Mabel(my mum) b1904 d 1977-Annie Louisa b1905 d 1906- Elizabeth (Lizzie)b 1907 died ?- Dorothy b1908 d 1976,-Violet May b1910 d 2001-Lillian b1912 d 1935- Nancy b1919 d 1947-William Ralph b1921 d 2001-Alberta b1923 d2006-Stephen(Jimmy)b1927 d 2008. I hope you can understand all this !!!. Violet and Grandad Baker looked after me during the war when I was evacuated to Wales.( I was born in 1937 in London ) I also think you might mean Mary who is my Cousin, and daughter of Lizzie. I know that she kept a pub at one time although she has had 3 daughters and I don't think she has had a son. I still keep in touch with Mary, (she is 84 now) and I used to see Jimmy regularly before he died. I had given up my search for John Clatworthy but you have ignited my interest again, he has got to be out there somewhere !.
Best wishes and a happy new year. Ann

Dear Ann,Thankyou for your last message.Your mother Harriet was born the same year as my grandmother in 1904.I have written down that there were 9 siblings, as follows, Bill,Jim,Bunny(alberta bowes lyon),Nancy ,Violet(who married Harry Millett and lived at 10 Victoria Terrace Crickhowell) Dolly, Lily(who died in her 20s, Mary(who owned or ran The 7 Bells in Crickhowell, and had a son called David), and Rose.I do not haveA Harriett down, but maybe she had a second name,These are probably not their full names and may not be a comprehensive list and I have no dates of birth for them, I wonder if you could confirm if any of them are correct, please. This information I gained from Mays daughter Tess, who is first cousin to my mother Brenda,so is also your Aunt (I think!)she is 84 and lives in Stafford and is well. She was very close to Bunny, who lived in Penrith.I have Annies Other siblings childre down as Jessie had a son called Baden. Lizzie had no Children.Sam had two daughters Violet and Winnie,Ithink he had an elder daughter who died in childbirth.William had 2 daughters with his second wife Alice (also the name of his first wife).Gertrude Margaretta had a stillbith.May had 1 daughter Tess and Daisy had a daughter Brenda and son Mervyn. I had always been told that Sarah Jane had had 16 pregnancys although I only have 12 names now,Ibelive she did have a child with George Evans but whether it was a miscarriage stillbirth or neonatal death I do not know, only that He did not survivebut at 53 plus must have come asquite a shock.Sarah Jane died in late 1931 or early 1932,I remember my grandmothe telling me that my uncle was about 6 months old.Hope you find this interesting,I will show my brother (John)this info, and see if we can track down any more on John Clatworthy best wishes and A Happy New Year ,Hazel

Rachael Ann was my grandmother and married William Baker in 1902.
Harriet my mother, was the eldest and born in 1904,(actually there was a boy first but he died and doesn't seem to have a grave in LLangattock). I have a couple of photographs which I think may be of Daisy and May but I don't really know much about them. I did not know the married names of Jessie, Gertrude,May and Daisy so I am grateful to you for letting me know their married surnames. It gives me something to do these long evenings and I can add them to my family tree I have bought so many certificates trying to find John but no luck so you may come across it sometime. I think I must be much older than you are but it is nice to meet you Hazel.

Yes we are talking about the same family .I am Daisy's granddaughter.I visited Sarah Janes grave when I was young with my Grandmother.it was marked only with a brick with MOTHER carved on it.I think that it has since been moved when theyrefurbished the graveyard .I have no other info on John Clatworthy, but will keepyou informed if I find anything else out.We must be cousins, several times removed,Which part of the family do you come from?at a guess I would say Annie or Sam as I remember most of the others. good luck, Hazel.

Yes I am sure we are both talking about the same John Clatworthy. I have his children as Louisa b 1882-d 1883
Rachael Ann born 1884-died 1935,John Samuel b 1886-?, Elizabeth Ann b 1888-?,Ruth b 1890-?,Lavina Jesse b 1891-?,William Frederick b 1893-?, Edith b 1896-d 1896,Margaretta b 1897-?, George b 1899-d 1900, May b 1900-?, and Daisy b1904-?. Sarah Jane (Perry b 1861 in Blaina )re-married a George W Evans in 1914. I believe her grave is in Crickhowell but I did not find it when I was there. I would love to find out where John was born as I have been searching for a long time and and have bought numerous birth certificates but none of them fit. Thank you for replying Ann

Just to verify we are talking about the same John Clatworthy, his children were Annie{Baker} Samuel Clatworthy William Clatworthy, Elizabeth[lizzie Fhomas],Jessica lavinia[Jessie Evans],Gertrude Margareta [Powell] May[Sargeant] and Daisy[Jones] He is buried in Llangattock church yard ,in a family grave, but not with his wife Sarah jane. I have seen the grave but can't remember who the other people were.I know he died under a tree in the village in a lot of pain[probably cancer] according to family stories. Hope thi is helpful .Hazel

John is my Gt Grandfather, and I have been trying to confirm John Clatworthy's place of birth for many years. On the 1881 census his birth place was not entered, just boarder and Monmouthshire. On the 1891 he gave his birth as Bromyard ,Hereford. In the 1901 census he gave his birth place as Hereford, Herefordshire.
He gave his father's name as William on his marriage cert. Been in touch with Hereford FHS but they could not find any births in their records but did find a William (living in Bromyard, who could be his father?) who seemed to be living with a Eliza Weaver.Hope you have some more info that can help. regards Ann

I was at University in Cardiff with a David Clatworthy in 1959/1960. He would have been about 18 years old then. We spent a lot of time together. He left Cardiff in 1960 and we lost contact. He came from Pontardawe and I believe his parents had a shop there. I wonder if your husband could be his son. If so I would be interested in any information about him.

Fred Payne Clatworthy was my second cousin (2X removed). He was born in Daton, Ohio in 1875. After several visits to the West, Fred settled with his family in Estes Park, Colorado in 1905. A self-taught photographer, Clatworthy was known for his autochromes, black and white, and hand-colored photographs. Clatworthy promoted his scenic photos of the area to tourists visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park. In addition to running his Estes Park studio, "Ye Lyttel Shop," where he sold western curios and his scenic views, Clatworthy worked on assignment for National Geographic, Matson Navigation Company, and the railroads.

Hi

My CLATWORTHY line in Wales runs from Thomas (born abt 1824 Huntsham Devon, died 1870 in Morfa colliery explosion). I have strong documentary evidence for Thomas's father Thomas including a will lodged at the Devon Records Office. It would seem however that the family line is not welsh, but from Exmoor, and are related to most of the large farm owning families of the area.

If you are also interested in this lineage I can send much more detailed information.

Regards
Julie
Dear Sir / Madam

I cannot trace the Abraham Clatworthy who married Mary Lucy Jones in London in 1873 in my family tree.

There were several Clatworthy families in the Swansea Valley - this would include Pontardawe, Morriston, Ystalyfera and Ystradgynlais amongst other villages / townships. This Valley had a number of coal mines, iron works and tin plate works in the mid 1800's and into the 20 century. Some of these Clatworthy's are related although a number of "other" Clatworthys emigrated to South Wales from Somerset around this time possibly as a result of difficult agricultural conditions and better employment prospects in South Wales.

Some of the Clatworthys became clock / watch makers and allied retail trades, whilst others became full time licensed victuallers.

Yours sincerely

Hugh Clatworthy

Hi Shirley,

My name is John Clatworthy and I'm the son of Norman Clatworthy who was Mabel's brother. They emigrated to South Africa on the Edinburgh Castle which departed Southampton on the 9th July 1920. As far as I'm aware, with Percy and Hannah were Alice (born about 1898), Mabel (born 1901), George (born about 1907) and Norman (born 1916).

Regards,
John

John's marriage certificate to Sarah Jane Perry in Bedwelty,Monmouth 1881, gives his father as William Clatworthy, a farm labourer. In the 1881 census in Bedwelty there is no birhtplace given for him, but in 1891 and 1901 (Crickhowell )census he gives his birthplace as Herefordshire. I can find no trace of a John Clatworthy born in Hereford. He died in LLangattock in 1913. Does anyone know of This John ?

Elizabeth Clarksworthy Bristol

A distant relative has sent me a copy of an entry in the parish register of St Pauls Bristol for the marriage of James Guise and Elizabeth Clarksworthy in 1802. I can only assume her name was written out incorrectly. I cannot find her or her family on the 1841, 1851 census. So I can only assume she was born 1770-1780 but no idea where. I am descended from her son William Guise born 1808 in Birmingham.

If anyone can help identify her as a sibling on their own trees I'd be grateful, but there is so little information to go on!

Clatworthy at Pontardawe

An uncle was researching Clatworthys some 25 years ago and I am now picking up where he left off - including some trailing ends. In 1980 he wrote to a Mr E Clatworthy living at Herbert Street, Pontardawe and received a reply (I dont know who it came from): "My grandfather came from Swymbridge in North Devon and married Mary Lucy Jones, daughter of William Jones. The marriage was in London in 1873." Mary Lucy was my gg grandmother. She had eight children. Alfred Norman, Edward and Sydney Herbert all married. Charles Henry disappeared into Australia in 1907 and is proving very challenging! I`d like to be able to work back from the Pontardawe connection to one of her children. Can anyone help with that, please?
Sorry, I was out for the afternoon. I had Thomas and Elizabeth as the parents too. I didn't know where in Devon Thomas was buried though. I have Elizabeth's maiden name as Martin. I have Thomas d. 23 April 1934 Barrett's Mill, St. Dominick, Cornwall. Elizabeth d. 22 July 1848 Calstock, Liskeard, Cornwall. I have all the children you have and a couple of other children to fill the gaps. They are Ann Jefford b. 1809 St. Dominick d. 19 Nov. 1883. She never married. (?) Thomas Edward Jefford b. 1806 St. Stevens by Launceston Parish, Cornwall d. 22 April 1866 at Drakewalls Mine in Cornwall. It is possible to see Thomas in the 1841, 1851, and 1861 census.
Leona,

I was able to get some confirming information about my Clatworthy connections. Jane Jefford is the mother of my G-G-G Grandfather, John Clatworthy. John married Mary Ann Penna and gave birth to my G-G Grandmother, Laura Jane Clatworthy (married James Henry Roberts, Jr.).

They ventured from England to Michigan and then to Souther California, which is where I reside. Thank you so much for your information about the Jeffords! :)

I have a lot of information that I've done and research if you're interested. You can do a search for Laura Jane Clatworthy at Rootsweb, and my tree should pop up.

- Mandy D.

There would have well been other children in that time.
I will watch for your reply. I live in Oregon City, Oregon and would love to have a reunion of Clatworthys and Jeffords. My great, great, great grandfather Thomas Edward Jefford who was born in 1806 and died at Drakewalls Mine (accident) 22 April 1866.....I think is Jane Jefford Clatworthy's brother. After Thomas' accident and death his wife and some of the children came to the U.S. in December of 1866 on the Hecla. My great great grandfather came earlier in 1854. His family and ancestors still reside in Peoria County, Illinois.

Is this your Clatworthy missing link

The following may be a connection between the S. Wales Valleys and Somerset/Devon/Cornwall, in that it is known people came from all over the U.K. to work at the newly opened Dockyard at Paterchurch Pembrokeshire, now called Pembroke Dock and then moved “up the valleys” for better employement;
On the 18 Jan 1848 Ebenezer Clatworthy of full age a bachelor and clerk in the Royal Dockyard residing in Pembroke Dock the son of William Henry Clatworthy employed as a clerk to a Merchant married at Pembroke St Mary Margaret Barrett of full age a spinster with no shown occupation residing in Pembroke Dock the daughter of John Barrett a watchmaker. The marriage by licence was performed by Charles Philipps, where both signed their names and witnessed by the signatures of Richard Cater Treweeks and Susanna Barrett.
Hope this helps someone
Regards
Owen Vaughan
ORIEL a welsh window on a surname
I think the Beatrice you are talking maybeof the same line as I am. My father is Francis W Clatworthy (b 1937) and his father before him was also Francis Clatworthy (b 1890). His father was called William Clatworthy and he married Cathryn (not sure how it was spelt). Williams father was John whom married Ann Maria . John's father was James who married Mary Smith. James father was William who married Ann (Marie?). Was Beatrice born in Taunton?
love Sandy
