Hey Diane, Just glad you wrote me. Harry K. was my Grandfather..I never met him because my mother told us that he was dead..long before he was. Did not know his name was Clawson, because my mother had lied not only about their real last name, but I have found many, many names that she used. We knew her as Deborah (Debbie) , but since her passing in 1980, I have learned so much & hit way toooo many brick walls, because I have no one to ask & haven't ever had known anyone that knew her before she met my Dad in Binghamton, NY. My mother's name was Juanita, she was Harry's youngest(I think) daughter & her sister's name was Dorothy..I actually guessed his name about 12+yrs ago & then began my search.."Juanita" said their last name was Claussenburg - which doesn't exist at all. I supposedly have 3 half sister & a half brother..don't know Juaniita's 1st husband's name - she lied about that too, along with where she was born, her age & everything. It has been very interesting what I have been lucky enough to find - which isn't much..that is why I started looking into Harry's siblings - to see if that would help & here we are. I went to Staunton, VA in 2004 & its a long story how I found this lady - very sweet & she lived in Harry Clawson/DeVore's house, because her mother was married to Harry - of course both are deceased & I even found his gravesite & that is a funny story too...all pure gut & guessing on my part. But sorry to say that lovely lady that was kind enough to share some stories with me - after she asked me who my Dad was..she thought I might be one of the three girls, which she had known before my mother gave them to her sister she said-- but unfornately Helen has also passed & she couldn't remember Juanita's 1st husbands name, but gave me the girls first names..which has been no help. I have added your e-mail,to my address contacts. My e-mail is beautifulfinish@aol.com. I have a million questions & my curious mind is always in gear. I don't even have pictures of Harry because of course Juanita said she hated him & feared him, so who knows. Please stay in touch, maybe we can figure all this out. I am excited about the 1940 census, but have no names - just know they lived in VA maybe in the later 1930's-40's - really not sure. My Dad didn't know any of this when he married my mother - I don't think, but he later started researching after my mother tried to kill me - she was very abusive & of course a huge liar..I hate sounding so disrespectful towards my mother, because I did love her & she was definitely not always abusive & she taught many things about the kind of person that knew I DID NOT want to be & that I thank her for. Sorry that I am going on & on & none of this probably makes any sense to you, but that seems to be normal with these people. Change their names, age..just make up stories as they go along. Thanks for listening, and thereis a whole lot more. I will look through all my notes, because I found alot of info about Chester..that is how I knew from your names - Dorr/Ferguson -- that you were legit..I am very distrusting & question people's motives, but am extremely life smart & definitely listen to my instincts. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks again Diane..it is nice to know that I am not in this search alone.(I do have a sister-2 yrs older but she doesn't handle info well - she gets very emotional & disturbed by it)not me, after all I have been through in my life(I am 57) none of it bothers me, they were cons & gypsys & I don't have to worry about them hurting me & I am just wanting to know the truth & would like to know what they always felt like they had to lie & what were they running from or who? Besides themselves. LOL!! Please keep in touch.

Take Care,
Beth Newman

My Clawson line is definitely from Pa. First ancestor coming to America was Garrett and wife Keziah from the Netherlands. They are buried in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pa. Do you think this line matches with yours? AND I also have 3 brothers - 2 of whom might participate in
a DNA test depending on cost.

so sorry for the delayed response. And yes we are searching for the same people. Raymond C. Clawson was married to Garnet Richards very breifly. They had a daughter named Naomi Audrey Clawson, (my grandmother). He had no involment in her life. My mother said he remarried and named one of his daughters Audrey Naomi Clawson. (Although I have found no record of this). Maud Clawson and her daughter ran a bible school around 1920-4. My grandmother and mother rememebr them as mean people! (my mother met Raymond Chester Clawson once) She would see him again in 1972, at Naomi Audrey Clawson-Biggs funeral in, Allegheny,Trentum, PA...but they did not speak. here is my e-mail..dorrferg@hotmail.com
Thank,
Diane Ferguson

The old Dutch naming convention was that your surname was a variation of your father's first name. I think the Clawson name came from the father's first name was Claus. I can't recall his last name but it might have Cornelius and his father was Cornelius van Schouw.

I'll have to do so me checking. I messed up my tree by deleting my father by mistake! I had it back to the 1400's-to Sweden and Netherlands, however much of that was taken from the trees of others so can't claim any credit. My dad's family in the US seems to have been in NY mostly. However, it would not be unreasonable for some of them to have gone to PA.Civil War period puts my 3rd ggrandfather in Ohio. You can message me directly if you like. Thanks!

Probably will need to come back another step or two. Does your tree take you back to PA? I've tracked my Clawson line in PA throughout the 1800's - but it's likely that a relative moved out.

Hi Keith,

Yes, I believe they originated in Scotland and then went to Northern Ireland. Not sure from what part of Scotland they were from, though. Ayrshire, maybe?

Guiomar

I haven't seen much on Clawsons in Ireland. I wonder if they may have been from Scotland originally and migrated to Ireland before going to Canada.

Sorry I couldn't help.

Keith Clawson

I'm looking for the parents/family of Sally/Sarah Clawson (b: c. 1809, possibly in Co. Down). Sally married David Rea (b: 1806, Belfast) on or about 26 February 1830 in Newtownbreda, Co. Down, and the couple immigrated to Canada soon after in 1831. She died and was buried in Montreal, Quebec in April 1841, and is listed in the burial record as Sarah Clossan.

If anyone knows who her parents were or what happened to them and the family after Sally left for Canada, please let me know. I've been looking everywhere and can't seem to find any information on them. Thank you!

Re: father from hacketstown-have info on James A Clawson

I'm responding to a couple of older posts concerning the Clawson lines from Hackettstown, NJ. My G grandmother was Florence Clawson born 1875. Back in 1971 I had the good fortune to received from a now deceased Clawson cousin a copy of a hand written family tree of our branch of the family going back to Abraham Clawson born 1785. (and where it stops for now). Within our branch and this history are included the James Alfred Clawson and Olivia Blauck discussed in Dierdra Fleury's 2000-1 posts. The references include descendents thru early 1970. James Alfred is the son of Alfred C Clauson, brother of my G grandmother Florence. We share a common ancestor, their father William R Clawson, civil war veteran.

Dierdra, please respond with any further interest you may have. I'd be happy to share our joint history.

Donnalynn, I see you do a lot of research into Hackettstown families. I'm researching several and will send a separate post on that. Perhaps we can collaborate. (more likely you can coach me in my beginner stage of research!) Thanks.

Re: Clawson/Scotland Link?

I don't know if will help or cause more confusion, but it is my belief that I come from the van Schouw line of Clawsons. I was puzzled about van Schouw becoming Clawson until I looked up New Amsterdam in Wikipedia and found that in the 1664-1674 era there were 3 Anglo-Dutch wars and at one time 4 British frigates arrived at New Amsterdam. After the British took over it may not have been wise to be so obviously Dutch, hence the name change.
Since you mentioned Josiah Clawson,
The following is from Rootsweb:
I agree that the Buckelew and van Barkelo/Barkuloo are not the same
family.
Some researchers have stated that William Buckelew was the father of
Peter Buckelew c:1644-1696 who married Annetje Fredericx. Annetje was
the daughter of Frederick Jansen and Grietje van Groningen. This
William Buckelew was supposed to be with a regiment from Scotland in
Amsterdam. This may account for his son Peter marrying a Dutch woman.
Peter Barteljoen (Buckelew) and Annetje fredericx had two children
baptized at the DRC in New York. Frederick was baptised in 1676 and
Annetje was baptised in 1678. Records also show that they had a son
named Peter and a daughter named Grietje (named after her grandmother
Grietje jans). They may have had a son named Francis who married Martha
and a daughter Mary who was supposed to be the wife of Francis Letts.
Records that I have, show that the Letts family and Buckelew family
were neighbors in New Jersey.
Four of the children of Frederick Buckelew the son of Frederick
Buckelew (1676-1754) married into the Clawson family. Margaret Buckelew
married Josiah Clawson, Rachel married Richard Clawson, Abraham married
Eliza Clawson and according the Frank Crosswhite, Mary Buckelew married
John Clawson. Mary and John Clawson had a son named Garret. Garret had
a son named Lott W. Clawson. When Frederick Buckelew died in 1776, the
inventory of his estate was taken by Richard Lott. Frank Crosswhite
believes that the first wife of Frederick Buckelew was a descendent of
the Lott family.
As you may know, Frank Crosswhite passed away on Dec. 12, 2008. In our
correspondence over the years, he sent me considerable research
material that he had done on the Clawson family, including information
concerning the van Schouw DNA studies.
Willem Klass/Clawson married Elsje Kroesen the daughter of Neeltje and
Garret Dircksen Kroesen. Neeltje Krosen was the daughter of Jan
Pietersen and Elsje. When Elsje was killed by Indians in 1651, Jan
Pietersen married Grietje Jans, the widow of Frederick Jansen in 1652.
Grietje and Frederick Jansen were the parents of Annetje fredericx who
married my relative Peter Buckelew. Annetje would be the half-sister of
Neeltje Kroesen.
Since I have considerable research material from Frank Crosswhite on
the Clawson and van Schouw lines that he sent directly to me, I do not
know what information he posted on Dutch Colonies.

Douglas C. Buckelew

PARKIN Mary Clawson After a long, full and loving life, Mary C. Parkin passed away at her home in Vicars Landing on October 28, 2010.

Born November 16, 1916 in Hamilton, Ohio,(Butler County) Mary was the younger of two daughters of Amor and Mina Clawson.

She was raised in Hamilton where she lived with her mother, sister and maternal grandparents, following the untimely death of her father before she was born.

Mary graduated from University of Wisconsin with a B.A. in English. Mary was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

She married Dr. George L. Parkin in 1940, and they enjoyed a marriage of 45 years before he preceded her in death in 1985.
Mary and her husband raised their family in Dayton, Ohio where her husband practiced medicine.
Mary was actively involved in the Women's Auxiliary of Miami Valley Hospital.

Mary enjoyed recounting the story of how on one occasion while serving as an electoral volunteer she taught Orville Wright how to use a "modern day" voting machine.

Mary and her husband moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida in 1976, where they shared many fulfilling years of beachside visits with their children and grandchildren.

Mary moved to Vicars Landing in 1997 where she enjoyed the camaraderie of wonderful friends in her later years.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach.

She was a true raconteur, and loved to make people laugh. Yet she always felt it was her friends who enriched her life, and she often commented on how fortunate she had been in her life to enjoy such long-standing and caring relationships.

Survivors include her three children and their spouses: Barbara Parkin Miller and her husband William Miller of Ponte Vedra, Mary Beth DiCecco and her husband John DiCecco of Baja California, Mexico, and George C. Parkin and his wife Sally of Corona del Mar, CA.
Other survivors include her six beloved grandchildren, Christine Miller Major of Chicago; Mark Miller of Charlotte, NC; Ross Parkin of Los Angeles, Alan Parkin of Los Angeles, Ryan Parkin of San Francisco, and Vanessa DiCecco Alvarez of Buenos Aires, Argentina, four great-grandchildren, and two nieces.

A Memorial Service will be held at Vicars Landing at a time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's memory to your local library.

Mary will be placed at rest next to her husband at Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.
Arrangements are under the direction of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jax Bch, FL. www.hardage-giddensbeacheschapel.com

Published in the Dayton Daily News on 10/31/2010
For what it's worth about a possible connection of the Clawson (Closson) and Smalley families in New Jersey, I found this article over the past weekend:

Cincinnati Daily Gazette, Jun 6, 1873, p. 8

Article entitled: "Genuine Pioneers. Reunion of the
Butler and Warren County Pioneers Association"

[portions omitted]

James Closson, of Middletown, who was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1795, and removed to
Cincinnati in 1802, spoke of his experience in log
cabins in Middletown in those days, when what are now
the streets of the village was shared equally by
wolves, deer, and human occupants. He was married in
the village in 1816, and again in 1871, within four
rods of the spot of the first interesting ceremony.
He introduced to the audience Jonathan Smalley, an
aged and feeble man of 93 years, who was present at
the marriage of the speaker's [e.g., James Closson]
father and mother in 1784.

James' parents weren't mentioned, but if this article is correct and Jonathan Smalley was 93 in 1873, he may have been born in 1780, not 1788, as shown in the 1870 census-- and it's likely, then, that this 1784 marriage occurred in New Jersey.

1870 United States Federal Census
Name: Jonathan Smalley
Birth Year: abt 1788
Age in 1870: 82
Birthplace: New Jersey
Home in 1870: Liberty, Butler, Ohio
Race: White
Gender: Male

-- Richard Cochran, Big Rapids, Michigan

John, have you tried looking on FindAGrave? They are a great place to look for ancestors. I have heard that my Clawsons may also have come from New Jersey. Many Clawsons have come from there and headed west. Daylily

Hi Cindy, thanks for all the info. We'v e-mailed each other before. I'm still researching like everyone else on our Clawsons. You should look at some of the other people who posted to this site, one of them states that his parents have the Clawson family bible, and another person states that he know who Josiah Clawson's parents and grandparents are. Have you read any of this? Daylily P.S. You can contact me at overthere49@hotmail.com

Hi, I just read your reply and I'm curious about this Josiah Clawson. In my research and talking to others I have noticed that there are many Josiah Clawsons in Eastern Indiana. Some in Fountain, Carroll, Wayne, and others in the area. I also know that there are many Clawsons in Eaton?, Ohio just across the Indiana/Ohio line. What do you know of these Josiah's and other Clawsons in both areas? Are you related to the Ohio Clawsons? You can reach me at overthere49@hotmail.com
I would love to hear from you. Daylily

Hi, I'm glad for the reply. Yes, this particular Abner Clawson, born in 1834, was Abner Clawson's nepfew. I believe that I have read this article, but thanks for sending it. Would the Clawson family bible say who Josiah Clawson's parents were? And if it does from where did they come from? You can write me at overthere49@hotmail.com
Look foward to hearing from you. Daylily

To Craig and any other Clawson male, it would be nice if people would agree to submit to a DNA genealogy test. I have done this and have gotten some conflicting results on the possibility of being related to other Clawson families. I am especially looking for members of the Indiana and Huntingdon Counties Clawsons to do this.

A good site to go to is www.familytreedna.com.

Thanks,
Keith Clawson

Abner Clawson

I recently discovered a short biography of Abner Clawson in Google Books. However, I think this Abner is the nephew of your Abner.

History of Wayne County, Indiana: together with sketches of its cities, villages and towns, educational, religious, civil, military, and political history, portraits of prominent persons, and biographies of representative citizens (Volume 2).
Chicago: Inter-State Publishing Co., 1884.
Page 472.

Abner Clawson, farmer, Green Township, was born in Wayne County, Ind., March 28, 1834. He was reared on a farm, receiving a common-school education. He has followed agricultural pursuits through life, and now owns a fine farm in Green and Webster townships and has one of the best residences in the township. He was married in 1879 to Margaret J., daughter of Thomas and Anna De Yarmon, of Richmond, Ind. Mahlon Clawson, father of our subject, came from North Caroline to Wayne County, Ind., with his parents in the year 1818, where he was married to Mary Brown, who came with her parents from Tennessee to Wayne County in 1820. They reared a family of six children – Jane (deceased), Abner, Esther, Sarah, Joseph, and Charles. Mahlon Clawson is now living in Iowa, aged eighty-one years. His wife died at the age of seventy-two years.

Link to page image in Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=V8oUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA472&a...
