Mary Clay is believed to have been the daughter of Edward Clay (the Uncle of Henry Clay, The Statesman called the Great Compromiser) and Magdelene Trabue. Mary is believed to have been born in Virginia around 1780. She most probably left Virginia with her parents, but this is not certain. She is believed to have married a Daniel Jackson and to have given birth to a daughter named Mary Georgina Jackson between 1825 and 1835 -- most probably in 1830 or 1831 (Mary Clay could have been 48 or so). This Mary Georgina Jackson married Micah Sterling Combs in Nashville, Tennessee in July, 1853. Micah Combs is the son of James Woody Combs note early attorney in Tennessee

From another posting
Magdelen Trabue (1748-1815) m.

I am looking for Mary Clay from VA. that married Dr Jacob Thompson of Leasburg, NC. She was my mother's grandmother and mother told me she was a descendant of the statesman, Henry Clay but I have no record of her predating her marriage to my great grandfather. Her grave is clearly marked in Leasburg with her birth and death dates. They are 1847 and 1905. I found a Mary A E Clay in the 1850 census that appears to match.
She was the daughter of Paul and Mary Clay of Bedford Co, Va.
Any information you have that will help me with this will be greatly appreciated. My Mary Clay Thompson is very precious to me as is her son, Dr Joseph Thompson and granddaughter, Annie Thompson Johnston. I don't care if she is related to Henry Clay or not. I just want to identify her origins. Than you for any help you can offer on this subject.

Isaac Clay (previously Klee) family of PA, OH

We think my husband is descended from the Franklin Isaac Clay family of Toledo, Ohio. Our understanding is that the family came from Pennsylvania to Ohio in about 1813 and changed their name from Klee to Clay at that time. Does anyone have any information about this family? They were supposed to have had an octaganol house in Toledo and given Bowling Green University land to build on.

I am still looking for the grandparents of John Clay.
According to his enlistment card for WW I he was born in 1896 in La Grange, Ga. He and his mother and sisters are in the 1900 census in Meriwether county living with William J and Nancy Coe. It says she is his adopted daughter. In 1910 he,his mother and sisters are living in Pike county with William (he brother?) and Nancy Pew.
John married my grandmother, Mae Yarbrough in 1917. He went off to war and died from mustard gas poisoning soon after he returned in 1920. At the time of his death he was living with his mother, Susie, and his two unmarried sisters.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Doris Clay Jacobs
He went into WWI, came back and died in Macon, Georgia from Mustard gas poisoning soon after returning in 1919 or 20. His mother's name was Susie (I am looking for her family also) and he had two sisters Minnie and Flora, whom I don't think ever married. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi :-)

My g,g,g grandmother Sarah CLAY was born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire about 1847. I have just discovered her marriage to George Turner PUGH in Sheffield in 1870, so I am going to send off for the certificate which will hopefully tell me more about her.

In the meantime, if anyone is researching the CLAY family from Ilkeston I would love to hear from you.

Clement Comer Clay of Tennessee

Hi:

I'm trying to get past a block in tracing back my Clay ancestors. My GGfather, Clement Comer Clay was born in TN however his father was from VA and I don't know his name. As near as I can tell, he was born in 1862.

He married Mollie (Mary) Kates around 1889 but I'm not totally sure of that date.

At least in 1890, the family was living in South Pitsburg, TN where my Ggrandmother Annie Mae Clay was born.

The family seemed to have relocated around 1900. They are listed in the census for S. Pitsburg but the information came from neighbors and has little detail other than a list of the names.

The family relocated to the Birmingham, AL area in Jefferson County where GGf Clay died in 1920 shortly after the census for that year.

He had a number of children, at least 2 of which died between 1900 and 1910.

I remember meeting two of them, Walter Clay and Thelma Clay Brown.

If anyone can give me some direction on how to trace back Clement Comer Clay, I'd appreciate it. I can't find any relatives that know anything about them and perhaps, some of those relatives read this board.

Thanks,
Robert

GRACE CLAY (MCKINNEY) in Maine or NH

I am searching for any information on my g-grandmother Grace Clay who married (I think!) Lester Brawn (Brann). She lived in Lebanon, NH in 1935 and 1938 but I think she spent most of her life in Maine - I'm not really sure. She gave my grandfather up for adoption in 1900 and remarried a man with the name McKinney. My grandfather found her later as an adult.

Clarissa Clay (Riddle?)

I recently ran across some information that Clarissa Clay married Tyre Riddle. From the information the Clay history, a bit sketchy to say the least, goes like this:

Henry Clay, Sr. b. 1672 Henrico Co., Va.
m. Mary Mitchell in Chesterfield Co., Va.
d. 1760 Chesterfield Co., Va.
Henry Clay, Jr. b. 1713
m. Lucy Green
d. 1764
Charles Clay (no other information - just his name)
Clarissa Clay b. 1739 in Va.
m. Tyre Riddle

Does anyone have any source information to back all this up? What sort of books are out there that have the Clay family history? My family goes through the Riddles so I have no information at all about the Clays besides this.
I have been researching the names on a memorial in Sheffield Cathedral which remembers the policemen and firemen who fell in the Great War 1914-18

The result of this research is on my website http://www.stannington.webitsmart.co.uk/ in the 'Sheffield' section. There are details relating to Henry Clay. Was he a policeman or a fireman?. I know very little about this man Can anybody tell me anything about his family or his career? I'd love to know more.

Kind regards

Robert.
In the 1950's, my husband visited them on their ranch. I do not know the spouses name for sure and he was known as Uncle Leighty but it may have been Uncle I. D. for all we know. These Clays had intermarried with the Algeos.
