Maria Miller's hypothesis is very interesting - I'll have to get her book!
As a descendant of Nathaniel, 1672-1714, you are fortunate to have such an excellent genealogy published in Appendix II, the 1894 second edition of Rebecca Graff's work. I'm very interested in the "Maryland' lines that descend from your ancestor James (1704-1765) - which of his 3 wives is your ancestor?

In the book "Betsy Ross and the making of America" the author states that in John's memorandum book he had these names in case he had the opportunity to escape the Old Mill Prison in Plymouth, England. He thought this man might be related and the others might be willing to help him if he did escape. He was relased when the law changed his status as prisoner of war instead of being convicted of treason and never had to use these names. We all know the original spelling to be Cleypole so if he thought he might be relation then we should probably think so too. His father was William and William was a bro to James, my line. William and James' grandfather was James the emigrant. My email address is jrneath@frontier.com

John Claypoole, 1752-1817, of Philadelphia, initially served in the U.S. Army during the Revolutionary War. Later in the war, he shipped out on the 'Luzerne', a U.S. privateer. In the 2nd half of 1781, the ship and its crew were captured by a British privateer and John became a POW in Mill prison, Plymouth, Devon, England. Before and during his captivity, he kept a 'memorandum book' and in the back of that book, he wrote a number of addresses including "Benjamin West, Newman S...treet, London" (BW was the celebrated artist/painter, born at Swarthmore, Pa) and "Haslam and Cleypole, cyder merchants and Fruiterers No. 75 upper Thames Street, London". Until 1787, a Benjamin Cleypole was a partner in Haslam & Cleypole and later married Ann Haslam on May 28, 1789, at Spitalfields Christ Church, Stepney, London.

The John Claypoole in question became the 3rd husband of Elizabeth Griscom Ross Ashburn Claypoole, aka 'Betsy Ross'.

The $64,000 question is: what was the familial relationship, if any, between John Claypoole of Philadelphia, Pa and Benjamin Cleypole of London, England? Has anyone done research into a possible link between these individuals?

Evelyn Claypool Bracken in Volume 2 of "The Claypoole Family in America", page 153, identifies the husband of Jane Claypool (dau. of Jesse Claypool and Elizabeth Miller) as _____ McFarland. She provides no source, or first name for her husband.

I have recently identified him as Arthur McFarland, the son of Joseph McFarland and Margaret White. An in depth analysis of my research is available at the following link:

http://ancestorsnow.blogspot.com/2011/07/arthur-mcfarland-fa...

under the section titled:

Who Was the Wife of Arthur McFarland

Tim Forsythe

It appears that John Claypool b1733 could be his grand father but that means that there is another Aaron Claypool b1783 in the mix. I also wonder if John Claypool b1733 son John Jr b1758 may be the lineage.

Does anyone have any information about the Denton-Claypool connection in Hardy West Virginia around 1740's??

My 5th great grandparents are Jacob and Mary Denton. Jacob Denton was born in 1741 in Hardy, WV. Around 1758 (?) he married "Mary". They moved to Jefferson City Tennessee where they both died around 1814.

I have found many people who have claimed that Jacob Denton's wife Mary was Mary Claypool, daughter of James Claypool (1701). Does anyone have any evidence to this???

In James Claypool's will he lists his daughter as Mary Smith (have seen in the Claypool genealogy info that Mary's husband was William Smith). He also lists as witnesses Jacob Denton and Mary Denton. Curious....

The Mary Denton listed as a witness is most likely NOT James Claypool's daughter or he would have listed her as his daughter.

Jacob Denton did have a SISTER named Mary so it is possible that the Mary Denton listed in James Claypool's will was Jacob Denton's sister, not his wife.

If this is the case then it is possible that Jacob Denton married Mary Claypool Smith after her father passed away.

This is all speculation....does anyone have any PROOF of who Jacob Denton married or what happened to Mary Claypool Smith?? In the Claypool records I can't find her, except in her father's will. She seems to be the only one without a list of decendents, she just disappears!
Re: Jesse CLAYPOOL related to Betsy Ross's 3rd husband John Claypool?

BTW, Betsy Ross's 3rd husband spelled his name CLAYPOOLE, as do the Pennsylvania Archives.
If your oral family history suggests you may be descended from Betsy Ross, you should be aware that Betsy's direct descendants MUST have one of her 5 surviving daughters as an ancestor, as Betsy had no sons. Those 5 daughters were:
1. Eliza Ashburn
2. Clarissa Sidney Claypoole
3. Susanna Claypoole
4. Rachel Claypoole
5. Jane Claypoole
For their husbands and children, grandchildren etc., go to
http://www.betsyrosshouse.org/hist_woman/desc_01.pdf

Using those names, US census & BMD data, you may be able able to prove your family connection to Betsy.
Good hunting!!!

Hello, I have been stuck at the Aaron Claypool b1838 and can't seem to make the leap to his father. It appears that John Claypool b1733 could be his grand father but that means that there is another Aaron Claypool b1783 in the mix. I also wonder if John Claypool's b1733 son, John Jr b1758 may be the lineage. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. my phone number is 415-355-0775 (office)
Thanks.
William Clyde Claypool
bill@octcinc.com

I do have information to add to what you posted. I am descended from WINGFIELD CLAYPOOLE b. 11 Sep 1813. I would
rather send this information via e-mail as it would be too much to post here. My e-mail address is: mhshimp@msn.com
You should really get in touch with Sam Claypoole as he has
a CD available which details most of the Claypoole lines.
Info on Thelma Claypoole

I'm looking for information on Thelma Claypoole, my mom's birth mother. Thelma was in Chicago, IL in August of 1946 when my mom was born at Walther Memorial Hospital, which is no longer in existence.

The adoption was private through the OB/GYN, not through an agency. According to what the family was told Thelma was supposed from Ohio and had a son a few years older than my mother. My mother's family was also told that Thelma's husband was away in the military when she was born and she couldn't take care of her.

To the best of our knowledge, Thelma Claypoole was the birth mother's real name and it was unchanged by the courts.

I posted the same query on the Claypoole board.
