William Jardine Clayton

I am looking for any available information on an Australian who migrated to Napa, California and later became a veteran during the American Civil War. His name was William Jardine Clayton who was born on December 27, 1835 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, the son of George Thomas and Elizabeth Eleanor Clayton. In 1850 George Thomas, Elizabeth, William and the rest of the family migrated again, when he was fifteen years of age, to the United States where he became a naturalized American citizen.

California census records reveal that in 1860 William was living with his mother and sister at Napa County, California and when the American Civil War erupted, William enlisted in the Napa Rangers, California Militia and married during the war years. After the war William worked as a farmer and by 1880 was divorced. William Jardine Clayton died in 1932 at ninety-seven years of age in the city of Lakeport, in Lake County, California and was subsequently laid to rest in the Hartley Cemetery in Lakeport, California.

I want to acquire information relating to him, his marriage, his family so he can be added to the Veterans Memorial website, www.acwv.info relating to veterans from an/or buried in Australia.

Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

James Gray
www.acwv.info
Brisbane, Au.

My David is Elisha's father, born in 1725 in NJ. He had at least 5 sons, Elisha & Elijah, Cornelius, Job and Noah and a daughter Euphrama. It has been proven all the sons (I may be mistaken about Cornelius, died in 1790) were REV war soldiers. Two of them Elijah and Noah went to PA. I suspect your David is the issue of one of these men. Names in this family were repeated over and over in each generation, so it can be really hard to to track them.

My Claytons are descended from Elisha Clayton of the REV War. He had several siblings and a twin brother, Elijah. His father was David from New Jersey. Elisha moved to Marion County, (W)VA and his son Elijah became a well-known
Methodist lay-minster in Ritchie County, WV. Elijah was my 3rd Great Grandfather on my maternal side.

A few members of my family have what is called the "Clayton thumb". The thumb nails are very short and wide, some say they look like a big toe. Today I attended a funeral for my mother's maternal first cousin and her daughter had what her mother had called the "Clayton Thumb". My mother has it, three of her sister's and her mother had it. It seems to be more of a trait passing down the female side, but my grandson also has it. I am courious as to whether anyone has talked or traced this family trait. My grandmother's ancestors were Nay's, Jolliffe's, and Hawkins, to name a few.

It sure would be great if we could get a male with Surname Cleaton from this geography to join the Clayton DNA Project. Search the Clayton Board for DNA to find out more.

Re: Jasper S Clayton b.1826 of Chesterfield Co VA

There is a wonderful book, John Clayton Pioneer of American Botany, by Edmund Berkley and Dorothy Smith Berkley that anyone interested in this subject should borrow by InterLibrary Loan and read. I have done so. It contains a huge amount of Genealogy related information on John Clayton's Ancestors and his descendants. Clearly Jasper Clayton of the late 1800's -early 1900's Chesterfield was a descendant of John Clayton, Botanist. But there is pretty clear evidence from the book that the other Clayton's of Chesterfield were not. There was not a single ancestor or descendant of John Clayton listed in the book (and there were many) that had the name Frances.
Also I caution others looking at info on John Clayton, botanist to use care with information published elsewhere. Much of it is incorrect according to the book.
That is not to say that some other Ancestor of John had a currently unknown branch that Francis came from. Part of what I was doing with the book was to determine if any male Ancestry line from John Clayton could be linked with any publicly known Clayton Tree and we could get a y-DNA sample. None is currently known.
Also, I will go out on a limb and say in a public forum that current DNA results appear not link the Kentucky Clayton's of Marion, Nelson, etc often said to descend from Francis Clayton to my Chesterfield Co VA Clayton ancestors.

My GGG Grandfather, William Clayton b1825, arrived w/ family in 1869 from England via Canada. The family moved to Manitoba, Canada in 1874. Not sure why MO was a destination! Could it be that there were other Claytons that settled in MO at the time? Please help with puzzle if any of your Claytons originaly came to MO from Cambridgeshire, UK in the early/mid 1800s.

In 1949 my parents Owen and Betty Clayton moved from Cincinnati from Knoxville to work. We stayed with relatives on my fathers side. I was born in Cincinnati in 1949.

I remember a name James, but I was very young. We moved back and from to Knoxville.

Please check the relatives of Harvey Owen Clayton, William Graham Clayton and William Jordan Clayton.

Numerous Clayton's in my family went to the Queen city in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

They had lots of children.

Good Luck.

Gary E.
Maybe you have found him now, but from what I have found there is a William Clinton married to Mary Lou Pullum married about 1892. I am trying to find info on this family. My father's (Michael Anthony Clayton) biological father was Albert William Clayton. He died in 1982 in Arizona. I noticed your name is Bill. Are you by chance Albert and Anna Mae's son? If so I would love to know more about the nationality of this family. From what I have heard Ruby or Georgina competed in Rodeos and had to prove some Indian heritage. Is any of this true? And if it is, what tribe, who and how much? Thanks
Becca
