Tika, My husband's grandmother was Elsie Elmore Claytor, born and died in Richmond Virginia. She died in 1929. leaving behind 2 young children. Her father and the Claytor ancestors were from North Carolina. Sorry I don't have any record of any of them going to Ohio, although I think that the Claytors were mostly all originally from North Carolina and some of them did move west. Jean

Mary Claytor married Bennett Smith in Caroline Co., VA in 1825. Do you have any infromation on this couple? Thanks.

By the way, I would not be too surprised if Coleman Claytor had that first name because of some earlier "connection" between the Claytor family and the Coleman family that traces back to the Robert Coleman (1600s) who married a Miss Grizzell (they had a son who was also named Robert Coleman who married a Miss Spilsby). A branch of this overall Coleman family lived in Caroline Co., VA by the early-1700s or so, and I have seen where several families used the given names of "Grizzell", "Spilsby" and/or "Coleman" because of an earlier marriage to this Coleman family (anyway, this is one POSSIBILITY for the lineage of Coleman Claytor).

My mother in law was born Phillis Elsie Claytor 5-27-1955 in Chilicothe, Ross County, Ohio. She was about 6 weeks old when (according to stories) her grandmother took her and put her up for adoption. She was old and couldn't take care of her, Her mother wasn't a good mother so her grandmother stepped in and tried to take care of her. To our knowledge her mother was also a CLAYTOR and its never been known who her father was. She is trying to see if she has any brothers or sisters out there. Her adoptive parents have both passed on as well as her adopted brother. She has no one left now and is trying to find her CLAYTOR family. And help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you , Tika

My g-grandfather was Jackson Greer Claytor. He married my g-grandmother, Perisade Brown, in Cadiz, KY sometime around 1880. They had 6 or 7 children. Around 1896, Jackson deserted PeriSade and she had to place all of the children in an orphanage. I believe the orphanage was near Columbia, TN.

We have been told that Jackson Greer Claytor died around 1910 in either Alabama, Arkansas or Texas, but we haven't been able to find out where. We'll never know why he deserted his wife and children, but I would like to know what happened to him. Did he re-marry, have more children or just drift?

If anyone has any information on him, even if it's not confirmed, please send it to me.

Thanks,
Barb Flores
Our last name, Claytor, is proven back to England to the 1400's. Rootsweb documents the first Claytor coming from England just before 1650.

How does a DNA study change this?

Gary O. Claytor

I am trying to locate the family cemetery of Maurice Claytor and Lily AKERS Claytor (1872 - 1980). They had 22 children, some of whom are also buried in that cemetery, which was located on the family farm located in Floyd County. Lily was remarried to a Mr. Morton Hopkins when she was in her 90's.

Lily's funeral was arranged through the Maberry Funeral Home, also located in Floyd VA. It was officiated by Rev. L. W. Lee and Rev. Lawrence Beale and interment was noted as "Claytor Cemetery

We are looking for the family roots of Matilda C. Claytor, b. 1806, Rutherford County, to William Carter Claytor and Elizabeth Chinn. We have no information on this line and are hoping that Claytor descendants can help us fill in some of the history of this line.

Matilda married Edward Waller (b. 1806, Virginia) on Feb 17, 1824, Rutherford County, Tennessee. On the marriage record Matilda's last name is spelled: Claitor and my Waller cousins have found it as Clayton. I have found the 1840 Rutherford County census under Edward Waller and the 1850 census, listing Matilda Waller, so far.

I am just starting my Claytor research and would really appreciate some help. I have been researching my Waller and Livings lines in Tennessee and have always wanted to know more about Edward Waller's wife Matilda's line....

Claytor DNA Project

This is an open invitation for Males with the Surname Claytor to join the current Clayton DNA Project. This was sparked by the inquiry of a Claytor to me (Clayton Project Coordinator) and is reproduced with her permission below. I cannot promise results, especially immediate ones. But it is likely the names evolved over time from an earlier version, probably from Cleyton in England. Recently we have proved that Cleeton and Clayton are definitely related, probably within 8 generations.
What you would need to do is go to Clayton Board, search for DNA and find messages related to the project from Author Walter. My recommendation to anyone interested is to sign up for a 37 Marker Test. The 12 Marker will tell us nothing. The 67 Marker is a financial stretch until we confirm that Claytor and Clayton are closer Cousins. The test can simply be expanded to 67 by just paying the additional fee. The Clayton and Cleeton projects will likely be combined in some way soon. Clearly the Clayton and Cleeton DNA Projects are not as far along as some Surnames, but we have already helped several of us. Other Surname Projects were at the same stage not so long ago and have broken down seemingly impossible brick walls over time. We will get there too!
But this works only for Male DNA passed from Father to Son to Son to Son, etc. (Female mtDNA is a much more complex issue at this point).

The original Message thread (in reverse) leading to this posting is:
Ed Clayton <{e-mail Removed}@cinci.rr.com> wrote: My intuition is certainly the same as your's. However until a Claytor Male or two has DNA testing done we can only guess.
Do you mind if I just copy this thread to Claytor Surname Boards and see if it sparks any interest?
Clearly 95% of Clayton's trace back to England at some point. My own research shows the common spelling was Cleyton there originally.
Ed
----- Original Message ----- From: CATHERINE CLAYTOR
To: Ed Clayton
Sent: Saturday, April 07, 2007 11:28 AM
Subject: Re: clayton surname

Hello Ed,
The reason I asked about Claytor/Claytor, is that I have found in my readings
that the two names are considered as one going back through the years and back to England, due mostly to the handwriting of the earlier forebears.
Hello "Cousin", I am wondering where you fit into the Claytor's
and what main info you have. Do you know if your family
came from England to Virginia in the 1600's? Who your grand parents were, great grandparents, etc. What do you do out there in CA? Interests, etc. Catherine
I just recently stumbled across this board again after taking a hiatus from genealogy for a few years. I think you mean Clayton, not Claitor. I have a Lucinda V.O.J.E. McGee and William Clayton who were my great great grandparents. If you still need information, I have some I will be glad to share and exchange with you. You can reach me at volstitansfan@yahoo.com. Give me a few days to get it together.

Thanks, Raytha
Tabitha,
My grandparents were from Ray Co. Missouri. They spelled their name Claytor. Could they be the ones you are looking for. James, Thomas, Pearl were some the first names.
